February3,2017
Hello Summerside Families! We are charging into the month of February at Summerside. It is important to take the time to celebrate accomplishments and in this edition of the Friday eCommunication you will see the names of students in grades 3-5 who have earned the second quarter honor roll. A sincere congratulations to our second quarter academic honor roll students and a thank you to our PTO under the leadership of Jennifer Teets (Our PTO President) who will be providing Pizza for our Honor Roll Celebrations that have been scheduled. Hat's off to our students, their families, and our staff for working in concert daily to make a difference. This is an interesting time of the year where our Summerside Staff are focused on Teaching and Learning while beginning to plan for the 2017-2108 school year. A flyer is included in this edition of the Friday eCommunication explaining the process for signing students up for Kindergarten for the upcoming school year. We keep you abreast as information regarding the 2017-18 school year is released. Feel free to call our Office Team with any questions. We are here to serve you! The Teaching and Learning in our classrooms is priority 1 every day and Mathematics is core subject I want to highlight this week. Paige Tabar and her 4th grade math students have been working on comparing fractions using <, > or =. After comparing, students must provide an evidence statement that supports their answer. Her students have learned a total of 5 strategies that students can use to help prove their answer. They have used these strategies to practice being good lawyers and providing as much evidence as possible to build a case that proves their answer to be correct. Students recently learned the 5th strategy, which is to create two equivalent fractions with a common denominator. In order to do this, they used what we're calling a "quad" as a graphic organizer that helps us separate the steps to get there, the fourth step being to write an evidence statement. They learned how to use the quad and how to find a common denominator together first, then students practiced using their new strategy in our math journals. Students worked in groups of "attorneys" and were given two fractions to compare. They had to provide 4 pieces of evidence to support their claim! Paige is proud of all this good work her students are doing. They have posters in the hall displaying this work. Way to go 4th grade Mathematicians! We have a number of after school opportunities for students and families coming up. Your Friday eCommunication and our Summerside Website will keep you well informed. Feel free to call me on my direct cell line Mon-Sunday at 373-5735 if I can be of assistance. I am here to serve you. Have a great weekend with your Family! Bob

Procedures and Processes
• Volunteers – All volunteers that work one-on-one with a student or chaperone a field trip must be fingerprinted at the Main office. There is no cost to be fingerprinted and your fingerprints are good for 5 years. The Main Office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00AM – 11:00AM in the morning and from 1:00PM- 4:00PM in the afternoon for finger- printing. Parents do not have to be fingerprinted to eat lunch with their child or attend a school function on campus.
• Phone Calls and Emails for Summerside Staff – Summerside Parents, communication is a key to our success in
providing your children the education they deserve. In order to expedite communication with you and our teaching staff, the best time during the day for our teachers to return your phone calls and your emails directed to them is 4:00pm each day. Our Teachers also have a window on most days from 8:30-8:50AM but often are in meetings in the morning. The daily schedule is built so the teachers are teaching students from 9:20AM – 4:00PM daily with a ½ lunch in the middle of the day. As a result, it is not possible for teachers to check emails and make phone calls during the instructional day. If they did they would not be teaching the students. If you need to contact a teacher during the instructional day and it is an emergency please call our school office at 513-947-7900 and our Office Team can serve you promptly. We are here to serve you and the process above will streamline important communication during the school day while allowing our teachers to focus on the important work of educating our children.
• Lost and Found – At Summerside we have a process for making sure lost and found items get back to their owner.
Any items (such as coats, hats, gloves, lunchboxes, books, etc.) that are found are taken each day to the Cafeteria. All students at Summerside know that during noon lunch before they head out that this is the location they can go to and find misplaced items. Our Cafeteria Supervisors make sure all items brought to the Cafeteria are returned to their own- er in the Cafeteria during noon lunch. The last week of each month, Cafeteria Supervisors notify all students to check lost and found each day. On the last day of the month, the lost and found items are bagged up, kept for one additional week and if not claimed sent to Goodwill. Lost and found items such as glasses, purses, wallets, and money are held in the Office where they can be claimed.
• Food Brought into School (Birthday Treats) - All Students at Summerside eat the lunch provided by the Cafeteria or
by their packed lunches. We celebrate our children’s Birthdays at Summerside. Children's names are read over the Announcements, are provided a birthday pencil, and they are highlighted in front of their classmates. Parents are wel- come to eat lunch with their children in our Cafeteria daily and especially on their birthday. If you plan on providing a birthday treat in the form of food for your child please bring food for your child only on their birthday. We have children with food allergies and students whose parents are very particular about what their child eats. As a result, Summerside students will eat only the food their students pack that is provided by their parents or the food bought in the cafeteria during the school day. All food will be eaten in our cafeteria also.
• Lunch Guests – Parents/Guardians/and Grandparents are encouraged and welcome to eat lunch with their children in
the Summerside Cafeteria during their child’s lunch period. Two special tables have been set up for our noon lunch period guests. Our guests will need to check in at the school office, where our office staff will have you sign in, pro- vide you a visitor’s badge, and direct you to the cafeteria.
