I’m old, and getting tired, and so this will be my lastoray into what has become an escalated exchange.  Mr. Pedde states is his letter in the 2/3/16 editiono the Buzz that he hadn’t attacked anyone. Actually

that was the reason or my initial response. His derisivecomments about “the guy” on the ront page o Friday’sedition.  I’ve read it, re-read it, and read it again.......heslammed a man I hold in high regard. Tat might be allfine and good back east, but hoss, you’re in Montanaand when you slight a riend, you slight me, and I won’ttake crap rom some city slicker who wants to move inlock the gate, and then install all the things he thoughtwere good where he came rom. Sounds a lot like thereugee problem I have been describing.

I sometimes eel like the “Borg” (only Star rekNG ans will get that) because the way I see it, youwant to live with us.....assimilate.  It’s been un, I’m moving on. As Goldberg used tosay.............NEX!!!   Jon A. Blockhus

Sara (Fjeldheim) Wald wrote to Janelle (Shanks)Bargmann or her 40th Birthday and also used it in thetwo columns she regularly writes or (Lewistown and

Sidney newspapers).  Janelle’s mother, Janice Shanks, e-mailed amilyand riends in the hopes that Janelle would hear rom 40amily and riends, sending birthday wishes and jottingdown a avorite memory they had o Janelle.  Sara and Janelle were Glasgow Swim eamteammates and she did one even better:

by Sara Beth Wald

Te mother o a childhood riend recently askedriends and amily to mail her daughter a letter

describing their avorite memory o her, in honor o myriend’s 40th birthday.

We haven’t seen much o each other over the years,so it was un to reminisce about our times togethergrowing up. Tis is the story I shared:  It always rained at the Malta swim meet. It was atradition.

Swimmers huddled shivering in their towels underthe tarps stretched over the heat benches, leaving theirsweats on until the last possible moment.

Tere was always that one bench everyone avoided, second or third rom the ront. Sitting there was likeplaying Russian roulette. Every time the tarp above itcollected too much water, it would sag and dump itsload on the heads o anyone sitting in that row.  And so it was a pleasant surprise the year I was…14, 15 maybe?... when the sun was shining. Te tarpsprovided welcome shade rather than shelter rom therain. Te only thing I was thinking about as I moved upthe heat benches was the rosted cinnamon roll I wasgoing to eat afer the race.

A Real Handful!    Te event must have been reestyle, because that’sthe only event my riend Janelle and I both swam.

Nobody gave that dreaded bench a second thoughtthat year. A sliver o sunshine was the only thing comingthrough the tarps.

Or was it?…  Te gap between the two tarps was a centimeter atthe most. I mean, what are the odds?...  Janelle and I were on the same relay team, and wewere a close-knit group. But on that sunny day in MaltaI gave a whole new meaning to the phrase, “I have yourback.”  Fortunately, Janelle and I were both wearing rubberswim caps. Janelle leaned orward to adjust her gogglesShe was an intense competitor, and had the medals toprove it.

I, on the other hand, was not nearly so intenseWinning was less a goal and more a pleasant possibleside-effect to getting a good tan.  And so while Janelle was nervously adjusting hergoggles, I yawned and stretched my arms wide.  I extended my fingertips to their ull length, pointingmy palms skyward. And that’s when it happened.

Plop.  At first I didn’t get it. Was it raining afer all? Janellehad elt something drop on the back o her swim cap

She wiped it with her hand and made a disgusted “ugh”sound.  We looked at each other’s hands. She had a smallbrown smear in her palm. I had a handul — a handulo bird poop.  We looked at each other, horrified. We looked up atthe tiny crack between the tarps. We looked back at ourhands. Ten we started laughing hysterically.

Te heat benches are usually a somewhat somberplace. No one else had seen what had happened. Tey just thought Janelle and I had lost our minds.
