Dear Grace Friends,

The life of every congregation is punctuated by the coming and going of ministers,

and the professional life of most ministers is punctuated by several changes of position.

For both the congregation and its ministers, it is important that these transitions take place

in as healthy a way as possible.

As I prepare for my departure from Grace later this month, I need to remind you of

the policy of National Capital Presbytery pertaining to former pastors and their congrega-

tions. The same rules that apply to former pastor Jay Click apply to me. That means that I

cannot

visit you or your loved ones in the hospital, a nursing home or rehab facility, or in your

home in a pastoral capacity;

baptize your children;

officiate at the wedding or funeral of a Grace member or relative; or

worship at Grace (except on a rare special occasion, such as an anniversary).

In other words, I will not be able to perform any pastoral functions for Grace members.

I have truly enjoyed my ministry with you, and I will miss you. Since I will still be in

the area and our presbytery, I know that there will be opportunities for our paths to cross,

and look forward to seeing some of you outside the context of the ministry we have shared

here at Grace. My prayers are with all of you as you go forward with your new pastor.

With love and affection,

Lisa

Grace Presbyterian Church Session Update

Grace Presbyterian Church Session met on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

Elder John Sowdon provided a devotional focused on The Good Shepherd in celebration of Pastor Lisa Kenkeremath’s outstanding and inspiring leadership during her interim period of pastoral ministry with Grace Church. Each elder shared their personal words of apprecia-tion and the impact her leadership and wisdom has had on them and their ministry.

Pastor Lisa expressed her appreciation to Session for their faithfulness, discernment, and dedication to Grace Church. She reminded all that according to the Commission on Minis-try rules, a former pastor cannot have any connections that put her in a pastoral role after her departure, including funerals, baptisms, or marriages of Grace members or their rela-tives. Session approved her husband Deepak Kenkeremath’s continued participation with the Middle East Working Group’s work with the ”Voices of the Holy Land” film series.

Clerk Greta Tosi-Miller read a letter from George Williams, Finance Committee Chair, regarding the completion of the annual review of the church’s financial records in compliance with Presbytery requirements.

Evangelism Elder Joe Miller reported that Becky Yarbrough volunteered to be the New Member Mentor Coordinator. The E-Team plans to have a new monitor in the Narthex which would stream the worship service for those who bring their babies there. It will dis-play other current and upcoming events and announcements.

Human Resources Elder Cindi Bryant announced that staff performance evaluation process is beginning. Any member with comments and input about our staff should provide that information to Cindi. Cindi was thanked for her leadership in HR. The HR committee will begin recruitment for the new office manager in February.

Nominating Committee Elder Ed Bryant shared that he had received positive feedback from Grace members about the Nominating Committee’s recommendation that five nominees be put forward for Nominating Committee, equal to the number of open slots. Mission Elder Dave Buckley announced that around 65 volunteers came to Grace on the morning of Christmas Eve to build backpacks for the homeless. The next Mission meeting will be on Sunday, February 5, to discuss the 2017 Mission budget. All are invited to attend.

Elder Dave Buckley, Commissioner for Grace at the January Presbytery Meeting, stated that the first reading of the Presbytery’s Revised Vision Statement was read and several Bills and Overtures provided. These include proposed amendments to the Constitution (and the Book of Order) approved by the 222nd General Assembly (2016) and recommended to the presbyteries for vote. Moderator Therese Taylor-Stinson passed the baton to Elder Bill Plitt, who was installed as the new Moderator, and Rev. Quinn Fox, Vice Moderator.

Session reflected on reactions to the CAT survey results, and Greta said the initial responses to the Time and Talent forms have been encouraging. She met with Craig Crooks, Virginia Bouchard, and Judy Heine to review the Breeze database and noted that Virginia had already built the infrastructure for the Time and Talent data collection and had begun enter-ing results. A mailing will be sent to the congregation with the Time and Talent form and a request that the completed forms be returned to the church office by February 15.

VOICES FROM THE HOLY LAND - Begins February 19th

In two weeks, this year’s Voices from the Holy Land Film Series begins. This series takes place on six Sunday afternoons between February 19 and April 23. It features five films and several shorts that detail the situation in Israel/Palestine and provide the background for understanding the gravity of the situation today. These award winning films provide a voice for the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian people living with the consequences of the longest occupation in modern history. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Israeli occupa-tion of Gaza and the West Bank areas of Palestine--3 generations living under military rule.

Following today’s worship service we will play a trailer of the film Two Blue Lines being shown on February 19. Produced by an American film instructor over the course of 25 years, it highlights the voices of Israelis telling the story of what is happening. Please plan to remain in the sanctuary for an extra five minutes to view the trailer. Your understanding and engagement could make the difference in reaching a just and workable solution for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the film series. It is being held in the Perry Auditorium of the National Cathedral, and bus transportation from Grace will be provided. More details can be found at voicesfromtheholyland.org. To ride the Grace bus, please use the signup sheet at the Information Station or contact Kathy Drinkard at 703 971-4259, or [email protected].

INDOOR CLEANUP DAY - Saturday, March 4, 9:00 a.m.

All Grace Committees, Youth, Missions, and others who store necessities in the church: please join the Board in a seriously needed Spring Cleanup Day.

Some areas, such as the stage and the attic off the Tower Room, have become unsafe, and everything not truly needed will be removed. Items not claimed will be donated or trashed. Other storage areas will be reviewed and contents evaluated.

Please let the Board know of your particular storage concerns, whether they are about space or contents, and START NOW to organize and tidy up your area.

THE STEEPLE IS COMING! THE STEEPLE IS COMING!

Volunteers are needed. As part of the Verizon cell tower installation the church steeple will be removed in late February and the new steeple will be installed in early March. To support that work, the church needs to be open at 7:30 AM on certain days so workmen can have access to the Tower Room attic and to the office roof. If you can meet workmen at 7:30 AM (no need to stay) to open the church on any day in February or March, please provide your name and a contact phone to Peter Smith (571-277-3801 or [email protected]), who is coordinating the steeple work.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

Stuff the Bus for ECHO on Monday, Feb 20 between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm at Cardinal Forest Giant, 8320 Old Keene Mill Road! This program, sponsored by Fairfax County Government and MV Transportation, in participation with local stores, uses a Fastran bus parked at a prominent site as a collection vehicle for non-perishable food donations for local charities. The bus will be staffed, and donations in any quantity will be appreciated. Also, Giant will offer pre-packed bags of ECHO’s most needed foods at different price points for the convenience of donors.

ECHO’s most urgent needs for donated items this month include towels, large pots and pans, flatware, all of which can be used, but in good condition; functional used computers, LCD moni-tors, keyboards, mice, cables. Since we don’t distribute used underwear, we could use donations of new men’s undershirts- size M and S, and new white socks- all sizes. ECHO also uses the following supply items to help us organize donations: masking tape, 2” clear tape, 13 gal. and 30 gal. garbage bags, brown paper grocery bags. The food pantry needs jelly, vegetable oil, pancake syrup and 2# bags of sugar and flour.

Shoes for Philippines. If you know some young soccer players who are outgrowing their shoes, please consider donating those shoes to ECHO and help us with a special effort to assist street chil-dren in the Philippines. Yes, ECHO’s focus is our own community, but we have a unique opportu-nity to reach out to extremely poor children in another part of the world. If you can help, please bring soccer shoes for ages 6 to 12 in bags or boxes marked “Shoes for Philippines” to 7205 Old Keene Mill Road on weekdays between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, or Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thurs-day evenings between 7:00 and 9:00.

FROM CAT SCAN INTO ACTION

The CAT Scan resulted in 3 priorities for our church: developing and implementing a strategy to reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the church; making necessary changes to attract families with children and youth; and working to renew and revitalize the community around the church by building coalitions with those who share this vision and commitment.

We have determined that our next step is to distribute and collect the Grace Church Time and Talent Survey to those who have not received it yet. All church members are being asked to complete the Time and Talent Survey. This survey lets you ex-press your skills and passions by checking the activities that you are currently par-ticipating in or would like to participate in in the coming year at Grace. The infor-mation from your completed survey will be made available to the leaders of the relevant program areas, and we believe it will be a valuable way for the new pastor to get to know you better.

Please complete the survey and return it to the Grace Church office or e-mail it to [email protected] by February 15th. If you have questions, please call Greta Tosi-Miller at 703-356-1916 or email me at [email protected].
