Niloofar’s Wellness Tip

The Best Way to Learn Anything: The Feynman Technique

There are only four short steps to implementing the Feynman Technique.

Step 1: Choose a Concept

Now this can be anything from gravity to world history. It works for everything. Now take out

a blank sheet of paper and write the subject you want to learn at the top.

Step 2: Teach It

Write out everything you know about the subject as if you were teaching it to someone else.

Not your smart friend but rather a toddler. This may sound silly but this part is incredibly

important and has worked wonders for me learning new things.

When I used to learn new subjects I would explain them with complicated vocabulary and

jargon. The problem with this approach is that I was fooling myself. I didn’t know that I

didn’t understand. And often, because I was using the right vocabulary, my lack of

understanding was obscured from my teachers.

When you write out the idea from start to finish in simple language that a toddler can

understand (tip: use only the most common words) you force yourself to understand the

concept and you get a clear understanding of where you might have some gaps.

Page 2: February 7th, 2017med.umkc.edu/docs/sa/announcements/2017/InTheKnow-020717.pdf · The Best Way to Learn Anything: The Feynman Technique There are only four short steps to implementing

Step 3: Go Back

In step two you will inevitably encounter gaps in your knowledge where you’re forgetting

something important, not able to explain it, or simply have trouble connecting an important

concept. This is valuable feedback and where the learning starts to happen. When you get

stuck go back to the source material and re-learn it. For example, if you’ve got a biology

test coming up and you’re having problems explaining evolution in simple terms, open up

the biology book and start re-reading the section on evolution. Now close the book, take out

a new blank piece of paper and explain the sub-idea (in this case evolution) that you were

having problems with using the Feynman Technique. Once you can do that return to your

original sheet of paper and continue.

Step 4: Review and Simplify

Now you have a set of hand-crafted notes. Review them to make sure you didn’t borrow

any of the jargon from the source material. Read them out loud. If the explanation isn’t

simple or sounds confusing that’s a good indication that you’re understanding in that area

needs some work. Also try creating analogies.

***

Not only is this a wonderful recipe for learning but it’s also a window into a different way of

thinking that allows you to tear ideas apart and reconstruct them from the ground up. (Elon

Musk calls this thinking from first principles.) This leads to a much deeper understanding of

the ideas and concepts. Importantly, approaching problems in this way allows you to

understand when others don’t know what they are talking about.

Feynman’s approach intuitively believes that intelligence is a process of growth, which

dovetails nicely with the work of Carol Dweck, who beautifully describes the difference

between a fixed and growth mindset. Source: https://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2012/04/learn-anything-faster-with-the-feynman-technique/?_ke=YmtoYXBweWZyaWRheUB5YWhvby5jb20%3D

American Public Square Event

Dr. Oz Health Media Internship

Health Media Rotation and Producer Opportunities for the Dr. Oz Show:

Job Positions

Are you interested in public health, social media, or medical television? If so, this is the

internship for you! The Dr. Oz Show, is looking for medical students to come join our team

in New York City. The show relies on its medical students to make sure all information that

airs is medically accurate. This means you¹ll be reviewing scripts, briefing Dr. Oz on

medical topics before tapings, and reviewing footage before it airs to make sure it¹s

medically sound. In other words, you¹ll be heavily involved in the production process. You¹ll

also have a chance to explore your creative side by writing radio scripts for Dr. Oz and

designing medical animations that air on the show. Through this experience, you will also

get the chance to meet important members of the medical community like Dr. Sanjay Gupta

MD and the Surgeon General. We have two opportunities available to medical students,

described below. If you¹re interested, please submit a resume and cover letter to Gretchen

Goetz, Medical Associate Producer, at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you

in the Big Apple!

Medical Student Producer

This is an eight to nine-month, full-time, paid position that will run throughout the show's

ninth season, from the beginning of August through the beginning of May. It is typically

filled by medical students who have completed their third year and who wish to take a year

off before completing their coursework and beginning their residency.

Candidates must be able to take a year off from school, as these are full-time positions.

Candidates should have an interest in health media, but experience in a media-related field

is not required.

The offices for The Dr Oz Show are located in Manhattan. Episodes tape in front of a live

studio audience and air daily around the U.S. and several other countries around the world!

The term of the position runs from about August of 2017 to May of 2018.

If you are interested in working with us, please send a brief cover letter explaining your

interest in working for the show, along with a resume/CV to Associate Medical Producer

Gretchen Goetz ([email protected]) by FEBRUARY 28, 2017. [Please make sure you

include the phrase "medical student producer" in the subject line of your email to

ensure your application is processed.]

Medical Student Rotation

This is a one-month, full-time rotation working in the show's offices in Manhattan. Medical

student rotators work under the direction of the show¹s medical director with the medical

research team to conduct research for shows, develop messaging for scripts, and generate

ideas for shows and other media platforms. Rotators are a valuable part of the Medical

Unit and get to see and take part in all aspects of the show¹s production. This is a unique

experience and allows students to learn about how the media works, how to communicate

to a lay audience about important health topics, and how to conduct research and evaluate

evidence.

Medical student rotators must receive credit for the rotation at their institution, as this is a

non-paid internship. Rotators are responsible for finding accommodations if they do not live

in New York City. Rotation slots are available from August through April.

If you are interested in rotating with us, please send a brief cover letter explaining your

interest in working for the show, along with a resume/CV to Associate Medical Producer

Gretchen Goetz ([email protected]).

[Please make sure you include the phrase "medical student rotation" in the subject

line of your email to ensure your application is processed.]
