February Blog
This month, our school celebrated Valentine´s Day and teacher Jessica´s
mother visited from the United States. Her mother brought a typical sweet
from America called Reese´s and the students were able to try it. In
America candy is a very common gift on Valentine´s day as well as cards,
poems, and flowers. Additionally, the students were able to practice their
English and ask simple questions to Jessica´s mom during her visit. They
were curious about her life in American and what her occupation is. It was
very exciting to have a new visitor at Gloria Fuertes!

Reflection of the Week Explanation:
The reflection of the week relates to Valentine´s day and love. The quote
is written by Dr. Seuss, a very famous American author. Dr. Seuss is the
author of many well-known Children´s books. The quote focuses on the
idea that most people go to sleep to live in a fantasy world that they wish
they had. But, in contrast, most people know when they are in love when
they do not wish to live in that fantasy world in their dreams
anymore…because for once, their real life is better than this fantasy
world.

Preparation for Valentine´s Day
In preparation for Valentine´s Day the auxiliars, Deanna and Jessica, made
a presentation for Valentine´s Day that focused on common Valentine´s
Day words, the history of Valentine´s Day, and then finished off with a
step-by-step diagram to teach the students how to make an origami heart.
After finishing the origami heart, the students were able to create their
own English poem to write on the heart and they could give this Valentine
to one of their family members or friends. The students loved decorating
their own Valentine´s cards and even made more to give to other friends.
After they finished with their origami hearts, they finished a worksheet
which had a word scramble with their Valentine´s day words and then a
mandala which had ¨I LOVE YOU¨ on it.

Valentine´s Day
In the photos, you can see teachers Deanna and Jessica with the students
after they prepared their origami hearts to give to their friends for
Valentine´s Day. Most of them wrote their own original poems on the
hearts too! As a special surprise, Jessica´s mother brought some American
candy to give to the students as a Valentine´s day present. The candy was
called Reese´s and it has peanut butter and chocolate inside- It´s Jessica´s
favorite candy!

Valentine´s Day
On Valentine´s Day the students worked on Valentine´s Day worksheets
and colored Valentine´s Day mandalas. The worksheet reinforced
previously learned Valentine´s day vocabulary words while introducing
some new terms for the students. The mandalas have been a huge hit
among the children in the last couple of months, so the Valentine´s Day
themed mandala was a lot of fun for the students to decorate. After this,
the students listened and performed their own rendition of the Beatle´s
song ¨All Together Now¨. By the end of our lessons, the students had
completed and participated in many Valentine´s Day activities.

eTwinning Letters
The students worked on letters to send to their pen pal at ´´Wick Primary
School´´ in Bristol U.K. for Valentine´s Day. In the letter, the students
wrote about Valentine´s Day traditions in Spain and then asked their
English friends about how they celebrate Valentine´s Day.

Systems of the Body Project
In natural science class, the 6th grade students worked on completing
diagrams of the different systems of the body. Each of the groups in the
class were assigned a different body system and they had to label all of
the parts of that system in English. The systems were constructed using
paper and play-doh which gave them more texture. The students used
many different learning styles to complete this activity- tactile, spatial,
social, and

More pictures of the 6th grade classes working on constructing their
models of the different systems of the body. As you can see, all the
students were engaged in making the models and it was a wonderful
opportunity for them to use their skills of working together while
practicing their English!

Incorporating Technology into Our Classrooms!
The week after Valentine´s Day brought about some new changes at
Gloria Fuertes. Deanna and Jessica have been working hard with the
classroom teachers to help incorporate more technology and interactive,
English games into the classrooms so that the children have more learning
opportunities. Some of the ways we have been doing this has been
through the use of some applications like Kahoot!, Quizlet, and Plickers.
Games like Kahoot present materials in a timed-multiple choice game
which allows students to use tablets to choose one of the answers. It´s
been a new opportunity for the teachers and students to learn new things
in the English classrooms and we are very excited to continue to find new
ways

Incorporating Technology continued…
In the 6th grade classrooms, the students worked on games in Kahoot that
focused on Environmental vocabulary (since that is currently what they
are learning in English class). They worked together in groups to decide on
which multiple choice answer was the best and then selected it. At the
end, we would go over the answers as a class and figure out why one
answer was correct and the others weren’t. In the 5th grade classrooms,
the students worked together on the simple tenses of verbs and to
be/have got exercises with kahoot. Like always, when we came across an
incorrect answer, we would talk about the mistake as a class and make
sure all of the students understand the grammar concept correctly before
moving onto the next question.

Incorporating Technology continued…
Students in the 4th grade classroom learned to play the application
Plickers. Plickers is similar to Kahoot and Quizlet because the application is
able to test student knowledge by asking multiple choice and true/false
questions. Each student is given a sheet of paper with their specific plicker
on the paper. When a question appears on the board, the students hold
up their paper with their answer. The application can scan, using a mobile
phone, the plickers and determine who has the correct answer. Below are
pictures of students in the 4th grade classroom holding up their plicker. A
student teacher is scanning the plickers for the application to check their
answers.
