Legacy

Last week as I read the newspaper I

came across some startling and sad news.

Tom Schommer, one of the first Chamber

Presidents had passed away. Tom is sort of

legendary in the history of the Greece

Chamber. By my understanding, he was

really their first staff person and helped to

grow it through the early years of the organization’s birth in

the early 80’s.

I met Tom Schommer shortly after I started my job

here at the Chamber in December 2006. One day he stopped

in the office and requested to meet with me. He continued to

do that sporadically as long as his health allowed him. He

loved to talk about the good old days when he ran the

Chamber but he also enjoyed talking about what we were

currently doing. Tom has been a member of the Chamber for

years and still received our newsletters. I think he was proud

to see how far the organization has come in the time since

he’s left (thanks to many people along the way).

Tom shared that the Chamber’s first office was in his

house! When we were going through old records several

years ago I ran across many items from his tenure. Old

newsletters, letters he had sent and many other things were

kept on file here. He was so proud of his time with the

Chamber and what he accomplished. I believe it was him

who had the foresight to get the Chamber involved in helping

small businesses obtain health insurance, a tradition we

proudly carry on today.

A few years ago, when the Chamber was celebrating

our 25th anniversary, we invited Tom to our special

celebration luncheon. He beamed the whole day! The fact

that we took the time to recognize his efforts meant the world

to him. I’m sad to say that I think I had only seen Tom once

since then, when I ran into him at an event at The Legacy.

He was just as inquisitive about what we were doing as he

ever had been.

The Greece Chamber lost an important person in our

history when Tom Schommer passed a couple weeks ago. I

wanted to dedicate this column to him and take the time to

honor his many contributions to our organization and our

Town. It’s a job well done, Tom.

Recommended Reading... It’s Not Just Who You Know

by Tommy Spaulding

I t’s Not Just Who You Know

focuses on how putting

others first can transform into

personal friendships and valuable

business relationships. The author

discusses the nine key traits that

lead to building real relationships:

authenticity, confidentiality,

generosity, humility,

vulnerability, humor, empathy,

curiosity, and gratitude. Spaulding puts relationship

building into what he refers to as the “5 floors of

relationships.” The first floor is transactional - people who

do things for you because it‘s their job. As you travel to

each of the higher floors, the relationships becomes more

in-depth. The second floor includes the casual

relationships and acquaintances, the third floor are peers

that interact regularly to reach common goals, the fourth

floor includes those that are mentors, good friends, close

colleagues, etc., and the fifth floor are those that you are

closest to, more intimate relationships. Spaulding

approaches relationship building and network expansion

by being authentic and using strategies and tactics in the

same way they are used for marketing, advertising,

customer service, and so on. He believes that combining

who you are with what you do to be a powerful approach

to expanding networks into meaningful relationships.

Tommy Spaulding is the founder and president of

Spaulding Companies and uses many real world

experiences and examples to validate his theories.-Terry

Hogan, Director of Marketing & Communications

The January Class Day for this year’s Leadership Greece

participants centered around the various levels of

government and how the class members can become more

involved. The students had the opportunity to hear from a

panel of speakers from the Greece Town government and to

tour the Town Campus. NYS Senator Joe Robach and

Maureen Duggan, Director of Economic Development for

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, both talked with the class

about their respective roles and how their offices can assist

their local constituents. The class also studied the leadership

principle of “Enable Others to Act.”

How to get the most health benefits

from your food during flu season:

Variety: Whether they are canned, frozen or fresh, adding more fruits and vegetables

into your diet is a way to ensure you are getting the most nutrients from your foods.

Focusing too much on one food group and not enough on others can cause

deficiencies in your diet. There is no need to load up your grocery cart with special

items that tout “immunity boosting” benefits. Food safety: During flu season, how

you eat is as important as what you eat. Following food safety rules can significantly

reduce your risk of illness. Washing your hands before and after food preparation is

the best way to ensure that you aren’t spreading germs to others. Wash all

vegetables and fruits before eating them. Healthy lifestyles in addition to eating a

healthy diet will help ward off the cold and flu.

• Get plenty of sleep every night, on average eight hours daily

• Be physically active

• Find ways to reduce stress, perhaps through physical activity or meditation

• Schedule a flu shot if your doctor recommends it.

Ask a registered dietitian or your doctor before taking any supplements or making any major changes in your diet. There’s no

secret weapon in the fight against the flu—an overall healthy lifestyle is your best defense.
