Lenten Bible Study Begins Soon

The season of Lent is often referred to as the journey toward

Easter. During the six weeks of Lent, Galt UMCers and guests will have an opportunity to walk through the Gospel of John, perhaps the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. In this study, John: The Gospel of Light and Life, well follow the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John and understand the context of some of the bestknown verses in the New Testament.

Heres the scoop.

Begins: Wednesday, February 21 and each

Wednesday through March 28

Time: 6:00 PM

Place: Heritage Park Clubhouse; 700 Second St.

Facilitator: Joe Carmichael

Study Guide: John: The Gospel of Light, Adam Hamilton

Cost: Each participant will be encouraged to purchase a study guide, $9

RSVP: Please reserve your spot this Sunday to insure the adequate number of guides

Dont forget those loose coins in your purse or pocket. These coins Saturday night, February 17, 5:00pm. The potluck will be a covered dish with a secret ingredient. The one who guesses the most secret ingredients wins the prize.

Mens Breakfast for February 17 will be held at the church, 9:00am.

Ever notice how sometimes dust starts to build up in our church home? We have found a person who will deep clean the church and office once a month to help rid of that buildup. This project was not in the proposed 2018 budget so it means we need to find Dust Angels who will help by donating $140 extra for the month. If you are so inclined and would be one of those angels, we would gladly accept any amount of donation be it $10, $20, $50, or even $100. You can place your check or cash envelope in the offering plate. Be sure to mark it Church Cleaning.

Annual Giving Statements are now available. If you have given a check or envelope (with your name on it) with cash, one has been prepared for you. The statements are available in the narthex.

The Date: Friday, March 2

The Time: 5:30 - 7:30

The details: Event will be held at Real Life Church, 550 Industrial Dr. Galt.

Tickets: $7 per person; or $25 per family.

Tickets are available from Faye Gaines

The Menu: Soup, bread, dessert

D e a r C u r r e n t L u n c h B u n c h Group and future attendees:

We have an idea and would like to hear your opinion. Instead of always eating at one local restaurant for a year or so, why don't we change it around on a monthly basis?

The new Italian restaurant 'Pastosa' is open at 100 Industrial Way, across from Fitness Pro and Real Life Church and it smelled wonderfully great yesterday when I was there checking it out!; the new Mexican restaurant ' Mariscos Las Islitas" is open, where the Cactus restaurant was. We still have Hunan House, Velvet Grill, the C Street Deli for soup and sandwiches; Squeeze Burger, Old Time Diner (where Gary's was); Denny's,

The 2018 Trustees identified building projects for attention this coming year.

Awning over the new ramp door.

Placing a suggestion box in the Fellowship Hall.

Fix door between narthex and Fellowship Hall.

Clean office and church on a regular basis.

Paint Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and bath rooms. Storage area at rear of Fellowship Hall - freshen up Fellowship Hall.

Cover power cords in pulpit area - this is a safety issue. There is a safety issue with the new ramp.

Handicap issue especially entry through heavy new door to people in wheel chairs. It was suggested a third handrail be placed in the middle of the steps leading up to the door. This would prevent wheelchairs from rolling down the steps when people are trying to open the door.

The #1 priority was identified as redoing the parking lot.

We realize that this list cannot be completed all at one time. It will not only take time, but more money.

Ash Wednesday..or. Valentines Day?

I dont recall Ash Wednesday

and Valentines Day ever falling on the same day before. They do this year. Of course, its February 14 because that is always the date of Valentines Day. Easter is early this year (April 1) and Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends 40 days later (not counting Sundays) with Easter. Its kinda fun, isnt it, that Easter is on April Fools Day! I think that there is a sermon there someplace!

This is my first Lent with you. I am looking forward to growing into a deeper spiritual relationship with God as we journey together during this season.

On Ash Wednesday at 12 Noon I will have a brief service in the Sanctuary at 12:00 noon with the imposition of ashes.with a Valentines theme. That should be interesting!

Throughout Lent Sue Buckmaster, our Small Groups Coordinator, is working with Pastor Joe Carmichael to provide a Lenten Study. Youll be hearing more.

I am beginning Lent with a sermon on The Prayer of Jabez and then I will give a series of messages titled, Bible Stories You Should Know which will conclude on Easter.

On March 29 we will have a simple Maundy Thursday Communion Service and on Good Friday, March 30, we will have a community wide Good Friday Service in our Sanctuary.

This Sunday, February 4, I continue the series on Finding Fulfillment with communion, prayers for healing of memories, the aroma of freshly baked bread and a message, Living without regret.

And, we are in for a treat on February 11! Dennis Yoder and Alan Weinel will give the message. One of them will be God and the other Noah! Bet you cant wait!

See you in church!

Pastor Norm

From Here and There

- - By Earl Arrants

Last month I shared some witticisms about old age from Will Rogers. To keep on that same theme, I found the following poem. Ive heard, and read, different versions on this theme before, but I thought it was well worth the effort to share it again. This poem was written by humorist Jim Reed of Collier, AR. He lived into his nineties before he went to the Lord.

Were Getting Old

Just a line to say were living,

That were not among the dead,

Though were getting more forgetful, And more mixed up in the head.

For sometimes we cant remember,

When we stand at the foot of the stairs If we must go up for something, Or weve just come down from there.

And before the fridg, so often,

Our poor minds are filled with doubt Have we just put food away, or Have we come to take some out.

And there are times when its dark out, With our night caps on our heads, we dont know if were retiring, Or just getting out of bed.

So if its our turn to write you, Theres no need in getting sore. We may think that we have written, And dont want to be a bore.

So remember we do love you, And wish that you were here.

But now, its nearly mail time,

So, we must say, Goodbye and Cheers.

There we stood beside the mailbox, with two faces so very red. Instead of mailing you our letter, We had opened it instead.

- - Jim Reed

I hope this is not our church!

An usher went up to a man who had his hat on in a church pew, and asked him to remove it. Thank goodness, said the man. I thought that would get a reaction. Ive attended this church for weeks, and you are the first person to speak to me.
