  • And don’t forget Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society (LADS), our resident amateur theatre company! As well as running the Theatre they aim put on three or four productions each year. These include a pantomime, which has become quite a local institution; and recently a musical in the autumn, plus both serious and comic drama. New Members are always welcome: there are plenty of opportunities to be involved on stage, back stage, front of house, lighting, sound, or behind the bar. It’s a great way to meet people and contribute to our community.

Or if you don’t want to get quite so involved but would just like to support The Market Theatre, become a Friend of the Theatre and receive Newsletters and have the opportunity to help front of house occasionally.

Details of how to join LADS or become a Friend of the Theatre are on the inside of the back cover.

We have a fantastic programme for you this Spring, from brilliant mask theatre with Vamos Theatre Company’s Finding Joy to the brilliant rendition of Animal Farm by Guy Masterson (a nephew of the late Richard Burton); and from the highly talented Kosh Theatre Company’s Café Chaos to an evening with Sunny Ormonde (Lilian Bellamy in The Archers). We have twenty films too with modern takes on classics such as Great Expectations and Les Miserables and a more unusual programme from our own Ledbury Film Club and The Borderlines Film Festival.

But perhaps the highlight of the season is our new live satellite transmissions from The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and from Berlin including the Royal Ballet’s fabulous, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, two operas from the Royal Opera, and what will be a stunning concert from the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Claudio Abbado.

From great rock and roll favourites to New York basement style blues, this evening will go with a bang!

With their bright red zoot suits and period instruments, this seven piece outfit really looks the part and has received rave reviews wherever they appear.

A thumping back beat drum behind a bull fiddle bass, sabre toothed guitar washed over enveloping stride piano, honkin’ tenor sax, swashbucklin’ with salt and pepper vocals - what more could you need? Well how about a dash of panache, glamour and spice, all in killer heels? Sarah Warren is fast becoming a legend in the UK, with her powerhouse vocals and bluesy style, she compliments the band perfectly.

Sunny has been playing the “outrageous and raunchy Lilian Bellamy” in Radio 4’s The Archers for the past 12 years. Her antics have kept the nation entertained, whether it be riding round Ambridge on a Harley Davidson, drinking The Bull and The Cider Shed dry with Eddie Grundy or absconding to Costa Rica with her beloved and very wicked tiger!!!!!

Sunny will fill you in on all the behind the scenes stories about the World’s longest running soap opera – an evening of anecdotes, banter, and favourite pieces from Sunny’s long and distinguished acting career- humorous and touching in turn. Sunny dances in and out of Lilians character with ease, but also with Drama....Shirley Valentine….Under Milk Wood.... stories and anecdotes galore….an evening to remember!

The whole set glittered with excellent singing and playing … with well crafted harmony vocals and peerless musicianship. Blues in Britain magazine - www.mumbo-jumbo.biz

A London based evening of music and laughter starting with ‘The Zoo’, an hilarious Victorian musical melodrama by Arthur Sullivan and Bolton Rowe which tells the story of a lowly apothecary who, marriage plans frustrated, decides to visit the London Zoological Gardens where he intends to hang himself on the veranda of the Refreshment Stall.

The lovers have been forced to communicate through prescriptions, including a dose of peppermint, and the young lady’s father’s medication for a blister on his back – not to be taken internally – but, apparently, the labels got mixed up. Get the drift?! The second half of the evening wends its way through London with a fully costumed and choreographed journey with songs from some of your favourite musicals such as My Fair Lady, Oliver, Me & My Girl, Half a Sixpence and many more.

A comic, moving, and heroic tale of unravelling realities. Following their Ledbury triumphs with Nursing Lives and Much Ado About Wenlock, Vamos presents its new full mask touring production: a funny, touching, vital, and heroic tale of adventure...and dementia. Joy is creative, funny, loves to dance, and is losing her memory. Her grandson Danny is rebellious, fearless, bright, and always getting into trouble. When, out of the blue, Danny decides to become Joy’s carer, where will their unexpected and playful bond lead them? Finding Joy is based on life events and true stories. It is accessible, engaging, funny and fearless theatre from one of the UK’s foremost full mask theatre companies. The Guardian said of Vamos ... an affecting, heartfelt production that is funny and touching in turn. The magic of Rachael Savage's production is that it creates such a vivid world without voice and words. Suitable for 12+.

  • A modern French farce set in contemporary Paris. Written by Marc Camoletti, who is probably best known for the long running West End success Boeing Boeing, and adapted for the English stage by Tudor Gates, Ding Dong is true to the comical tradition established by Feydau.

When businessman Bernard discovers his wife Jacqueline is having an affair with Robert there is only one thing to do to ensure his honour is satisfied – give Robert a choice – his wife or his life. Robert naturally agrees to let Bernard have his way with his wife Juliette…or does he? What follows is an uproarious evening packed with laughter and mayhem through deceptions, false identities and unravelling plots leading to an unexpected and hilarious conclusion.

New to Ledbury, but a big favourite of Arts Alive The Kosh – an absolutely tip-top company – mix physical comedy, theatre, dance and music with a great story. Comic confusion spills from the kitchen. Waiters and diners collide, lovers meet, identities are traded, secrets uncovered, denial and betrayal tear friendships apart.

Dangerous comedy and a tragic night out are just some of the specials on the menu at Café Chaos. This show will appeal to all ages and is a classic Kosh production – funny, superbly skilful, gloriously theatrical and guaranteed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. You are guaranteed a really great night out.

People still talk of Guy’s brilliant rendition of Under Milk Wood at The Market Theatre a few years ago. Now, using nothing but a bale of hay, some amazing sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, Masterson ignites this famous yarn bringing a modern sinister relevance to Orwell's masterwork.

Hilariously comic and terribly poignant in turn, Masterson's breathtaking physical storytelling creates the entire farmyard around you in two hours of utterly compelling theatre. A brilliant adaptation that delights with its physical grace and artistry. It is complex and entirely theatrical; a combination of bravura acting and poetic storytelling that milks new nuance and meaning! The Scotsman

  • An opera full of poignancy and exquisite sensitivity to the nuances of growing up and wrestling to under-stand your emotions, Eugene Onegin is an inspiring vehicle for Kasper Holten’s first production for The Royal Opera. Working with the Danish set designer Mia Stensgaard, whose design hallmark is clean, strong images ripe with emotion, and fielding a brilliant cast (including Simon Keenlyside in the title role), Holten will provide a fresh reading of this classic opera.

Britten’s portrait of the public and private faces of Elizabeth I is a brilliant depiction of the Tudor court and the tension between affairs of state and affairs of the heart. Focusing on Elizabeth’s relationship with the young Earl of Essex, Gloriana captures the dichotomy between the public image of the Virgin Queen and her seething personal feelings – a familiar dichotomy in these days of celebrity-worship and media scrutiny. Winner of the Cannes Grand Prix, Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s (Uzak, Three Monkeys) new film has been hailed as a masterpiece. An epic tale, it follows one night and day in a murder investigation, as police grimly disinter a buried body from the Anatolian steppes. As the corpse is uncovered, so are long-buried memories in the minds of the lawmen. It sounds simple, but Ceylan enriches it with so many rich meditations, it feels like a novel. Superb.
