What is it about Kendal Mintcake?This simple and yet iconic confectionery seems to carry with it almost magical qualities. There is even a River Mint which runs through Kendal!
It is still tucked in rucksacks and indeed handbags, across the world as a fast energy-boost, and is probably the world’s first ‘energy bar’. It has become an essential item on major expeditions – offering a whopping 350kcal per 100g. This effective and fast energy source was included in the rations of major expeditions: notably by Sir Chris Bonnington on the ascent of Everest in 1975, and the imperial trans-Antarctic expedition led by Ernest Shackleton in 1914. More recently, Ewan McGregor & Charlie Bowman included it in their 2004 round the world motorcycle trip – ‘The Long Way Round’.
Today it is still a firm favourite with fell walkers, and expedition organisers. In the world of triathlons and extreme sports, it is perfect for a fast energy boost and is popular as a portable, durable source of energy.
Emma Stevenson, professor of sport & exercise science at Newcastle University explains: “it is high in glucose and so rapidly digested and a quick source of energy. At high altitudes the body struggles to digest other foods: The strong mint flavour is also great as high altitude dulls taste buds.”
Apart from all the science - it’s clear, clean, fresh taste, and crunchy texture is also just melt-in-the-mouth gorgeous. A favourite round these parts is a small piece smothered in dark chocolate after a lovely dinner.
The very name Kendal Mintcake is iconic, and also conjures up visions of Kendal, the tradition-al market town, and times gone by.
It was in 1913 that James Wilson and his wife stumbled across a recipe, whilst they were making boiled sweets. James sold Mint Cake from a shop in Kendal High Street, and the iconic sweet was delivered throughout the Lakes at first by bicycle, then by horse-drawn vans. McClure’s were proud to acquire Halls of Kendal, meaning they could continue to distribute and supply the Wilson’s products around Cumbria and further afield.
Visitors to the Lake District also began to love the idea of taking Kendal Mint Cake home as gifts from their travels here. The Lake District is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and new tourists still love the idea of Kendal Mint Cake as a quirky souvenir and gift from the area.
The traditional Wilson method remains boiling in open copper pans, with glucose and peppermint oil and the product range has expanded to include high quality fudge and biscuits.
