"WATER t WETLANDS AND ECONOMICS"

'At our January 29 general meetingDr. Bernie Yokel gave a comprehensive presentation tracing. thecycle of our rainfall, its contribution to the underground aquiferand the economic value of wetlands- both fresh and salt. The economyin Collier County depends mainlyon 1) Agriculture which needs alarge amount of cheap water2)Tourism which depends upon anattractive environment with many

'birds, she'll's and fish and 3)Real e'state which" is increaSingin value. '

-He explained the difficulties of, water management within the GoldenGate development, and the problem'of balancing the desir~ of privateproperty ownerS to protect theirproperty from flooding against thedamages caused by excessive drain~ge - loss of p'otable w,ater supplyin the aquifer and the danger ofsalt water intrusion. Pointing upthe effects of drainage within theGolden Gate development, where thewater table 'is lowe'r during the dryseason, he reported that 75% of297 forest fires during 1981 occurred there. East of Rt. 29, wherethe land is undrained, a minimalnumber of fires occur and usuallyput themselves out.
