What a wonderful party we had in January! A great crowd and great music provided by DJ Tim Boggs. Members were on the dance floor dancing almost the entire evening. Before the party we had a business

meeting in which members had good questions regarding our budget for this year. We voted to accept the budget with the stipulation to revisit it after the workshop in July. We also added a line item in the budget to have a float in the Spring SOS Parade. Our theme will be our workshop theme “Rock Hill Shag Club, The Original Party Animals”. Ron & Penny Blaney are the co-chairs of the float. If you would like to participate please let them know. At the Mid-Winter ACSC Meeting, the Rock Hill Shag Club was awarded this award for extraordinary contributions to the Hall of Fame Foundation. It will be hung at the Wall of Fame at Celebrations. Thank you members for your contributions to our club charity. The Winter Beach Blast is in its final stages, so if you haven’t sign up for any station, please do so now! The committee needs some donations for door prizes; they are looking for gift cards such as; gas, home improvement stores or restaurants. Contact Debbie Brown, chair. The 2019 ACSC Summer Workshop is getting closer. If you haven’t bought your ticket the price will going up from $85 to $90 per person April 1. Most of the money is to cover the Saturday night dinner. TheCostofaShagClubbyReneeBakerIttakesmorethanjustpeopleshowinguptodancetosupportashagclub.Membership–Whypayamembershipfee?Lotsofpeoplearecontenttopaymoremoneyforentrancetopartiesratherthansavemoneybypayingamembershipfeeandpayingthelowerentrancefeetoparties,becausetheydon’twanttohaveto“doajob”intheclub.Well,membershipsareneededforclubstosurvive.ClubsthataremembersoftheACSChavetopayayearlyfee(thisalsoentitlesyoutobuyyourSOScardatareducedamount).ClubshavetopayafeetotheoneofthemusicassociationsinorderfortheDJstobeabletoplayartistsmusicforthepublic.Clubshaveexpensessuchaswebsitesandtheirupkeep,newsletterstopublish,flyersforpartiesorevents,andotherexpensesjusttoexist.Membershipmoneydoesn’tcoverthecostofweeklyormonthlyparties.Someclubsarefortunateenoughtohavearestaurantorclubtosupportthemandallowthemtousetheirfacilitiesfreeofcharge.Theseclubsarefewandfarbetween.MostclubshavetopayrentforthefacilityandalsopayfortheDJtoplay.Venuesaren’tcheap.Thisiswhyclubsmustalsochargeafeeatthedoorforthepartyandsellraffleticketsand50/50tickets.Anaverageclubwillhavetopayataminimum$400ormaybeeven$600tohaveaparty.Thatwouldbe$4-$6apieceentrancefeefor100people….seewhereI’mgoingwiththis?Then,evenifyouhaveacashbarandmembersbringfoodorsnacks,theclubhastofurnishplates,napkins,forks.Decorations?Notrequired,butpeoplepreferalittlesomething.Youneedticketstohavearaffle,paper,pens,bookstokeeptrackofpeoplesigningin,expenses,etc.Ourgoalistopreserveandpromotetheshag.Shaglessons,eventsinthecommunity,donationstoourcommunityorshagrelatedcauses…?Ourofficersarerequiredtoattend3ofthemandatorymeetingsheldbyACSC(whoownandmaintainSOS).Shouldtheseunpaidworkershavetospendtheirownmoneyforgas,food,rooms,andeventfeestoservetheirclub?Moneyaside,partiesdon’tjusthappen.YouhavemembersthatserveasOfficers

andBoardMembers.ShouldtheyhavetodoALLtheworkfortheclub?No.Theyaretherepresentativesandfinaldecisionmakers,buttheyalonecan’tdoallthework.Partieshavetohaveavenue,theyneedadate,aDJ,personstogettheroomready–setuptables,decorate,personstomanthedoorandsigninpeople,takeupthemoney,someonetoorganizethefood,personstoselltheraffleand50/50tickets,someonetomaketheannouncements,peopletocleanup,someonetopaythevenueandtheDJ,someonetosendupdatesandpicturestothewebmasterandtheeditorofthenewsletter.Whataboutwhenthepartyisover.Someonehastopublishthenewsletter,coordinateCharityfunctions,makeflyersforupcomingevents,teachtheshaglessonstogetnewmembersin….thelistgoeson.So,whatdoesitmeantobeamember…let’ssee…Webstersaysa“constituentpartofawhole”.Ittakesthemembersworkingtogetherasawholetokeepthegrouptogether.Everyonemustplaytheirpart.Noteveryoneneedstoperformthesametask,andsomearebetteratdifferenttasksthanothers.Theclubcan’tfunctionwithoutthemembers.Withoutthemembers,thereisnoparty.Withoutaparty,youdon’tgettotalktoyourfriendsanddance.Therefore,participate,supportyourclubbycomingtothedances,promotetheclub,workfortheclub,bringnewfriendsintofurthergrowthoftheclub,haveanopinionanddon’texpectsomethingfornothing.

TheTwoR’sofMembershipbyRobinMorleyWeallknowthatinanyorganizationwehavetheresponsibilityofcreatingandmaintainingamembership.ThedefinitionaccordingtoWebster’sisthestateorstatusofbeingamemberandthebodyofmembers(anorganizationwithamembership).Thetwo“Rs”ofmembershiparecriticaltomembershipsuccess.Theyarerecruitmentandretention.Recruitingisusuallythroughfriends,workplaceandsocialnetworks.Ifeelsureeachofourshagclubshasdifferentwaysandideasinwhatworksbest.Inrecruitingnewmembersitisimportanttokeepinmindthequestion“WhatdoIgetformymembershipcost?”Anewmemberssectiononyourwebsiteisagreatplacetofamiliarizeyournewmembersaboutyourclub,ACSC,SOS,music,danceshoesandevents.Thisisjustanotherwaytoeducatenewandexistingmembers.Probablythemostsignificantmeanstorecruitnewmembersisthroughdancelessons.Everyclubhasitsownapproachtothis,butIwillshareoneaspectofhowSandyBeachShagClubhandlesthis.AfterBeginnersIdancelessons,youmustjointheclubinordertocontinuewithadditionallessons.Thishasanimmediateimpactonbuildingyourclub.Whenitcomestoretentionthequestionishastheclubprovidedthemembershipbenefitsthattheysaidtheywouldinanenvironmentthatwas

enjoyable,positiveandfun?Weallknowthatwelosemembersduetohealthissuesandrelocation,butifwedoagoodjobofprovidinganenvironmentwherepeoplehavefun,youwillretainmanyofyourexistingmembers.Itiscertainlyeasiertoretainthanitistorecruit.Wesometimesthinkwearedoingagoodjobofmakingpeoplefeelliketheyarepartofthegroup,butifsomeonefallsbetweenthecracks,theywilllikelyfeelignored,andtheirexperiencewillnotbeagoodone.So,itisimportanttohavewaystointroducenewermemberstothegroup,tohavemembersthatareappointedtomakingsurethatnewcomersaremadetofeelwelcome,areaskedtodance,andgiventheopportunitytominglewithasmanypeopleaspossible.Nametagsareoftenagreatwaytomakesurepeoplearenotintimidatedbynotknowingaperson’sname.RockHillhasasystemwheretheguestshaveonecolorednametag,andmembershaveanother.Thatisagreatwayforpeopletoknowwhichpeoplearemembers,andwhichareguests,likethemselves,iftheyarealsoguests.Membershipcommitteesshoulddecidewhatideasworkbesttoensurethatpeoplearetrulybeingmadetofeelwelcomeandarenotontheoutsidelookingin.Itisalsoimportanttobethebestambassadorthatyoucanbe.Rememberthatthesearejustideasandsuggestions.Ourgoalineveryclubistohaveahealthyandvibrantmembership.Wellanotherfunnight–ThecrazyPantscontestwaswonbyJoyCassidyandthebestdressedfootballthemewaswonbyDavidMcManus.Don’tforgetifyoudressforathemeparty,maybeyoucanwinagreatsurprisenext.SandyVojteckwon50/50anddonated$111.00backtotheclub.Wearenowlookingforwardtothebeachblastwithitswonderfuldoorprizesandraffles.Sodon’tforgettoAM2D

Asannouncedatourlastmeeting,RockHillShagClubwaspresentedwithaplaqueofappreciationfromTheHallofFameFoundation.ManyofyoumaynotknowthattheHOFFpartywasstartedafterourclubvotedtosupportTheHallofFameFoundationasour“charityofchoice.”Atthatpoint,HOFFhadalreadyhelpedseveralmembersofourclubastheyfacedhardshipsofdifferentkinds.Theyhavecontinuedtobethereanytimewehaverequestedhelp,assistingseveralRHfamilies,membersandnon-members.Sincethatvote,wehaveallworkedhardtocometogethertoofferourbestefforttohonorthatcommitment.AschairoftheHallofFameFoundationparty,IwantedtosayTHANKYOU!Becauseofyourkindnessandgenerosity,aswellasourgeneroussponsors,thiseventdoesn’trequireanyinvestmentfromourclubbudget.Itistotallyself-supportedanddeliversaheart-warmingdonationtotheHallofFameFoundation.Theclubisgenerousenoughtoaddtheirowndonationof$1000.
