It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. As we journey into the Lenten Season, we are grateful that the church is so filled with the love of God. Paul has affirmed that if we speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, we are just a group of noisy gongs or clanging cymbals. Human love alone may be based on personality and can be selfish, lawless and fickle. While divine love will establish one in fearlessness and courage – for God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power, love and discipline. God breathed his warm, lively and holy breath unto the first mans’ nostrils and dust became alive. We are no longer a house of dust, but a house of love. Love is God and God is love. We are the image of Love. I have been serving here in Sebastopol for three months, and I feel very blessed to be with everyone. Thank you for your prayers and support in all the many ways needed in our ministry. We have made small steps in reactivating the passion of teams working together for the sake of our church, with God’s love. These teams and their leadership have been working hard to make much-needed changes and updates in our church. Salute to all members of the Administrative Board, Finance, Trustees, SPRC, Worship, Mission, and the women and men in all ministries. We have started to recognize our young adults participating with leading in worship. Thank you, Gabe Yazollino! We also welcome new members Laura and John Williams to our Sebastopol family, and they are glad to be with us. We are going to celebrate our own daughter, Iris Jamahl Dunkle who has recently been named the Sonoma County Poet Laureate for 2016-17, we’ll be listening to one of her poems on February 21. This begins our Lenten journey, this period of time before Easter when we focus and reflect on our need for a Savior. Ash Wednesday is on February 10, the first day of the Lenten season. The word “Lent” comes from a Middle English word that means Springtime. Lent is a celebration of the renewal of human life caused by the grace of God. It is a season of solemn reflection and serious repentance that leads to spiritual renewal. It’s the tie when we remember that such renewal depends on Christ crucified. As we focus on the power and wisdom of God in the cross of Christ, our goal should be not merely to explain those mysterious ideas but also to apply the reality of God’s power and wisdom to our daily lives. Even as the renewal of nature in spring depends on the tilt of the earth, so the renewal of our spiritual lives depends on the cross. So during this Lenten season, we invite you to set aside time each day to reflect, repent and refocus on the wonders of the cross. Blessings and prayers to all the family of Sebastopol UMC, Pastor Iunisi Tovo

FAIR TRADE PRODUCTS Recently many of the KOWS radio personalities, asked why I was selling Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee, chocolate and other products. I explained that we sell EE products as a fundraiser for the youth in the church, but it is much more than just a fundraiser for the youth. We are also supporting UMCOR, and we are supporting a fair trade cooperative that directly supports small farm cooperatives and small farmers directly! What follows is from the Equal Exchange website, http://equalexchange.coop/ Started in 2002, the UMCOR Coffee Project is a collaboration between Equal Exchange and the United Methodist Committee on Relief to involve more Methodist communities and individuals in supporting small farmers around the world. For each pound of fairly traded coffee, chocolate, tea, and foods Methodists purchase through the UMCOR Coffee Project, 15 cents per pound goes to UMCOR's Small Farmer Fund. That Fund amounted to $16,332.19 in 2014 alone! UMCOR's goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. They believe all people have God-given worth and dignity. Equal Exchange is a Fair Trade organization that buys directly from small-scale farmer cooperatives, owned and run by the farmers themselves. Because our farmer partners are paid above market prices for their crops, they are able to make investments in community projects, educational programs, and technical trainings. These cooperative organizations also help keep rural communities healthy and strong, and keep local cultures vibrant. Equal Exchange is also committed to supporting sustainable farming methods that help green the earth through reforestation, natural resource conservation and organic practices. Stop by during fellowship hour and say hi, and support our youth! (and so much more) Pat Munsch

WHY SCRIP?

It is a painless way to contribute to the Sebastopol UMC. Participating businesses donate a portion of the scrip purchased back to the Church and the purchaser or gift card (Scrip) recipient obtains full face value of the Scrip purchased. As an example, See’s Candies donates 20% of the face value back to the Church. Our Scrip program has been underway since 1995 and the return to the Church has varied from $300 to over $600 per month. Obviously, the more Scrip purchased, the more the Church earns. We have Scrip for all the local food markets, and many chain stores. We can obtain Scrip for almost all major brands. However, for a large purchase, or for a store that we do not normally carry and inventory, you can call in advance and it can be ordered. Usually, an order is made every month. If you have any questions, want to check our inventory, or make a special order, call Pat Schoch at (707) 823 3889 Let’s support our church by purchasing SCRIP. Thank you, Pat Schoch, Jenny Cheshire, Janice Magnoli

SOUPER BOWL 2016 DONATE DURING FEBRUARY Your Missions Team has again decided to sponsor “Souper Bowl” during the month of February. We are

asking that you donate cans of soup that will be given to F.I.S.H., the free food pantry. F.I.S.H. depends primarily on donations in order to provide soup to almost 5,000 clients each month. 40% of their clients are children. When available, about 1,3000 cans of soup are given each month. Soup is an important part of F.I.S.H.’s menu as many people, especially seniors, make a meal out of a can of soup. F.I.S.H. distributes more than 650,000 pounds of free food to around 60,000 clients a year.

TRAFFICING COALITION

The Cal-Nevada Trafficking Coalition is organizing a field trip on February 11 to the Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) Dream Center (www.saysc.org) at the old Warrick Hospital in Santa Rosa at 2447 SUMMERFIELD RD. SANTA ROSA, CA 95405, 707-544-3299. The building has been transformed into a safe haven for youth escaping difficult situations and homelessness to help transition them back into a healthier and more hopeful environment. Meet at the Dream Center at 4PM and say you are with the Methodist group. The President of SAY is a Methodist and Santa Rosa Methodist churches are supporting their good work as well. For more information, contact the Cal-Nevada Trafficking Coalition Chairperson, Lisa VanderBoom at 707-853-6910.

End of Year 2015 Report from Finance Committee Chairperson The second church-wide financial pledge campaign occurred during the months of December -January.

The primary goal of the campaign was to maintain the same level of giving by members from 2015 into 2016. This was accomplished!

Moreover, pledged contributions by church members exceeded those made for 2015 by 1.3 %. Thirty-two pledges were received that accounted for 44 individuals or 60% of the members who attend on a regular basis. The total amount of pledges received for 2016 equaled $72,500.00. Like last year, there are a significant number of individuals and families that do not pledge but contribute financially throughout the year. To the person, everyone’s contributions are needed and greatly appreciated for funding the costs of administration, maintenance and programs of the church.

The Administrative Board composed of chairpersons of Trustees, Finance, Worship, Missions, and Staff Parish met in late January and approved a budget for 2016. This budget meets our operational and salary costs as well as provides support for missions, youth, worship and hospitality.

While the budget is balanced, it needs to be stated that there are very slim margins between our expenses and our income. This is in part the reason for a capital campaign this year. We need to re-establish a reserve to draw on when repairs are needed for the church. As you know, older buildings always require more attention to maintain. In addition, the Epworthian Hall and kitchen need some modernizations that would improve their utilization not only by members but also by groups and individuals in our community. Also, they’re a number of safety needs that should be addressed such as outdoor lighting for the church and the parking lot as well as a security system for the church office. By no means is this a complete list, rather it is a partial one. Over the next quarter, the Trustees and Finance Committees will be seeking your input on what church improvements are needed; and then what follows will be an effort to raise those funds to commit toward accomplishing those improvements.

Thank you for your continued support and stewardship of the church.

Coins for Lent Giving Calendar.

During Lent, many of us are reminded to examine our lifestyles and ask, "What can we do for others?" Lent is a good time to commit to giving money to a project that helps those in need. One way to involve the whole family is to collect coins during the season of Lent, bring those funds to church at Easter, and we’ll donate what has been collected to Heifer International. Follow this "Coins for Lent Giving Calendar". You can also visit our website for more information, or pick up a copy up at church!
