The raven times

It has been an amazing month. We had a

99.9% turnout from the Sophomore class for the

CAHSEE. Just shows the dirve of our students to

succeed. Prior to the testing, three of our teach-

ers, Mr. Moore, Mrs. Perez, and Mr. Walpole

gave their time to prep our Sophomores on a

Saturday in which more than half our Sopho-

mores attended, best ratio in three years. It is

truly an honor to be a part of such a devoted and

professional group.

Prom is an exiting fun event that every Cali-

fornia City high school student is exited to at-

tend, especially since this is our first prom! The

Booster Club is hosting an event to showcasing

what to wear for prom and what you may need

Like corsages or limos. The money from this

event will help raise money for prom. The show

is on February 19th. Be sure to show your support!

The “Prom Fashion Show” article in this month’s

issue has more details regarding this event.

Valentines day is coming around the

corner. Do you have someone to share it with

this year? If so, hopefully you men found a nice

little something to get

her this year thats

within your teenage

budget. You can

always pick up a nice

little something like a

teddy bear or choco-

lates, but apparently

most girls like it

when you make them something (according to

surveys). So get creative! Make a necklace or do

corny things with sweetheart candies. Google is

your friend…Happy Valentines Day!

The third Monday of the month of Feb-

ruary is known as President’s Day. This holi-

day is not for any president in particular but

to honor the office of presidency. It was

decided that it would be the third Monday

of February because it is between Lincoln’s

birthday and Washington’s Birthday. The

holiday was also created to celebrate Ameri-

can citizenship. President’s Day is not on the

same day as Washington’s Birthday either.

Although President’s Day was not always

a holiday, the first time the states formed

Monday Holiday Act tried to create it as in

1951. Even though it is a holiday now, some

states still don’t celebrate President’s Day.

Washington’s Birthday is on February 22nd,

and Lincoln’s birthday is on February 12th;

Two of our greatest presidents.

As everyone knows this month is

Black History Month. This year there is a

competition to see who knows the most

about Black History. Every homeroom will

have two students who will be taking a quiz

everyday on figurative African-Americans.

The homeroom with the best score at the

end of the week will win the competition.

The winner will also receive a true soul food

dinner for the entire homeroom class. Good

luck to all homeroom classes.

The CCHS Booster Club is hosting

a fashion show for the juniors and seniors

here at California City High School to in-

form students what is hot for this year’s

prom. The fashion show will be held on

February 19th at 5:00pm in the gym. The

latest prom attire will be featured, along with

limousine services, and corsage styles. Dif-

ferent vendors will be there to help get an

idea of what to wear to prom.

The fashion models will be senior

students from our school. Each student will

model two or more

styles of dresses or tuxe-

dos. There will also be

a dinner after the show.

For the dinner you get a

choice of chicken or

home cooked jamba-

laya. If you want to at-

tend this fashion event

you can buy tickets now

from the office, Maria

Williford, or any of the participating models.

Presale tickets are $4 for just the show, and

$10 for the show and the dinner. At the

door pricing is $5 for the show and $12 for

the show and dinner. So come and support

the booster club, and the senior models, and

see the first ever CCHS Prom Fashion

Show.

Everybody who went on the Zoo trip met

early at the station as planned. Kids were excited

to see all the animals. The ride was definitely a

new experience for most students. Students got

to sit with three of their friends on the second

floor or just sit alone. The ride had many stops

along the way but the students entertained them-

selves by playing with a deck of cards, listening

to music and laughing with each other. “I liked

spending the time with friends somewhere else

instead of staying at home doing nothing”, said

Veronica Rios when asked what she enjoyed the

most about the trip. When we finally made it to

the LA Zoo everyone split up to do his or her

own thing. We all had to meet back at six to

catch our bus back to the train. It was a really

nice and hot day. The animals were giving the

crowds a show making the trip an eventful one.

The International Club went to the

Golden Dragon Parade Saturday, February 5,

2011. The trip was only eight dollars, which is

really inexpensive. The same routine was put in

motion for this trip. Students met at the Lancas-

ter train station at 8:30 and returned at 7:45.

Students enjoyed watching the parade. Students

got to see all the colorful, dancing dragons differ-

ing by sizes. Some were so amazing they could

wrap around it three times. There were karate

fighters walking the parade and Chinese people

showing off their traditional clothing. The mayor

was riding on a car saying Happy New Years in

Chinese. The chairmen was also there and even

the Chinese Princess. The Chinese people were

celebrating the New Year of the Rabbit. They

had a float with a huge Rabbit on it, that looked

like an Easter bunny. The streets were crowded

with people selling merchandise and food. It was

nice to get the chance to see how different cul-

tures celebrate. If you enjoy spending your week-

ends out of town and having fun with your friends

at school you should check out what’s going on in

the international club. The club is always engag-

ing in new experiences for the students here at

CCHS, do not miss out.

A Killer Mystery

With its over succession of its prede-

cessor, Dead Space 2, has been called the best

horror game of 2011. With

better and faster graphics and

a new multiplayer game mode

it has moved to the top of the

charts of the best games. All

of the weapons from Dead

Space return in this sequel,

including the plasma cutter and the line gun,

which fire beams of energy capable of slicing

necromorph limbs clean off. There are a few new

weapons as well: the detonator lets you place

laser-triggered trip mines to set explosive traps for

approaching necromorphs, and the javelin gun

fires spikes at such a tremendous velocity that any

necromorph unfortunate enough to be in their

path is likely to find itself impaled to a wall. You

can upgrade your weapons with nodes that you

collect, making them noticeably more effective at

limb-ripping and laying waste to necromorphs,

resulting in a satisfying sense of progression. It

seems kinesis technology has seen remarkable

advances in the three years since Isaac's fateful

trip to the Ishimura, and it's now a much more

effective offensive tool. There's a delicious feeling

of dishing out poetic justice in turning the necro-

morphs' own limbs against them, and making use

of this tactic is an effective way to conserve your

often very limited ammo supply.

To The Biggest Pop-star Can you guess who this is? He is from

Ontario, Canada and he rose to the top. He was

found by Usher on YouTube. It’s Justin Beiber,

rising to the top at age sixteen with a record of

forty top pop singles. From “Pray” that was per-

formed at the American Music Awards to “Never

Say Never” which happens to be his movie , and

it’s his motto in life. He is an amazing pop star.

Although all you fans probably already know this,

but he has a new remix album coming out Febru-

ary 11th. Titled the Never Say Never Remixes

featuring many other artists from the music indus-

try and that’s not all it will also include his new

single Born to Be Somebody. “These featured

artists include Jaden Smith, Chris Brown, Miley

Cyrus, Kanye West, and last but not least Usher.

This album includes remixes of "Never Say Nev-

er”, “ Somebody to

Love”, “Up”, and

“overboard” as well as

many others. Thinking

about a gift for a valen-

tine ? How about a Justin

Beiber album.? Will be

great for Justin Beiber

fans so think about your

valentine this February.

The Rite, directed by Mikael Håf-

ström, was a spectacular movie about a seminary

student, Michael Kovak who is sent to go to

school at the Vatican to study about exorcism

when he finds himself biting off more then he

could chew. Struggling between what he has

always believed in and what he faces throughout

the movie has him questioning weather or not he

believes in the Devil. Michael seeks help from a

legendary priest who has done thousands of

exorcisms, Father Lucas. He teaches Michael

how to perform an exorcism on a young

pregnant girl, but little

does Michael know

that there was more to

blessing the soul then

he thought. The mov-

ie is based on true

events and takes you

though an adventure

you’ll never forget. It

allows you to relate to

the characters, and

shows you the physical

and mental destruction of what it takes to become

a member of the church as far as it comes to

doing exorcisms. The movie has a fantastic plot,

and great actors, although it takes time to get to

the climax. If you are easily bored with the lesser

action movies, then this is not the movie for you.

It is rated PG-13 and runs for 1 hour and 52

minutes.

Café World is one of the games Zynga

has launched on Facebook since the massive

success of Farmville. By serving food to custom-

ers and performing other tasks, you can earn

enough money to customize your little café to fit

your tastes and grow it into a larger restaurant.

Every recipe in the game requires a certain

amount of time to create, anything from three

minutes to three days. Every dish costs so much

to produce and will earn you a certain amount off

the game’s time-based virtual currency, coins or

Café Cash. A finished dish that sits in your game

too long without being served will rot, causing you

to lose your coins you paid to make it. The idea

is to make sure players are checking back into the

game when they know dishes are going to finish

cooking. Sadly, all the most advanced dishes have

oddball cooking times. Having friends in Café

World is a lot more fun than it is in most Zynga

games. While Café World lacks true multiplayer,

you still have the option of visiting your friends’

restaurants. You can’t choose to help your friends

run them during visits, which is disappointing, but

you can occasionally get random events during

visits that offer you currency and experience bo-

nuses including Café Cash or coins. Café World

is a great way to spend your time when you are

bored. It is pretty fun and entertaining! When

you’re on Facebook, give it a try!

If you are into thrilling, chilling books

then boy do we have one for you! This book is

called Cross Country and is by a writer who has

become one of the best selling writers of all time,

leave you wanting more and more. Cross Country

is about a detective named Alex Cross who pur-

sues the most ruthless criminal he has ever en-

countered. This is a crazy killer who will not stop

until he has been captured. He has murdered a

lot of families and it is Alex’s job to capture this

menace before the killer kills him first. This is

Alex’s job; to save more lives or he

will get killed. To figure out what

happens, read this crazy book, and

read more of James Patterson’s

books this guy is great!

In college you will run into many obstacles that

you will have to overcome. Term papers, wild-parties,

and bipolar professors. One thing that you would not

think that you will have to deal with but, you might have

to is roommates. Now this is something very big that

will affect your time in college.

Hopefully of these tips will help you overcome

some of the problems you could possibly have with a

roommate.

If your and you roommate are always arguing, do

not be surprised but that is part of the college experi-

ence. I mean hey, you argue with your parents and you

argue with your brothers and sisters, a roommate is

really no different. With a little patience and communi-

cation, it doesn't have to be the end of the roommate-

relationship. At the same time, a little patience and

communication can go a long way toward determining if

finding a new roommate is best for you; write a list of

things that bother you about your roommate. Once

you have figured out the main issues talk to your room-

mate at a time that is good for both of you. It's a very

good idea to try to set this time in advance. Chances

are, your roommate knows that you guys need to talk,

so give him/her a few days to possibly put his/her

thoughts together, too. Using the list that you made, let

your roommate know how you are feeling. Try not to

attack your roommate too much, no matter how frus-

trated you are. Try using language that won't make him/

her defensive. Take a deep breath and say what you

need to in a way that is constructive and respectful.

And, as hard as it may be, try to listen to what your

roommate has to say without getting defensive or inter-

rupting. Your roommate may have some valid reasons

behind what's going on and be frustrated, too. The only

way you are going to get to the bottom of everything is

to put it all out on the table, talk about it, and see what

you can do. You're in college now; it's time to address

this like the adult that you are.

After you guys talk, things may be a little awk-

ward. This is, of course, fine and totally normal. Unless

there are issues that you just cannot tolerate, give your

roommates a little time to make the changes you dis-

cussed. If you decide that you just can't stick with your

roommate for the rest of the year, figure out what to do

next. You aren't the first person ever to have problems

with a roommate.

Ja’Nette White

Most of you have probably heard of a new

zodiac sign and some of you might be wondering

why it’s here now and how it came to be.

There has been a “wobble” in the Earth’s axis

caused by the gravitational pull of the moon,

which then led the constellations to shift, there-

fore leaving them a month off. The ancient Baby-

lonians were the ones who created the zodiac

signs and decided to remove Ophiuchus because

they only wanted the 12 instead of all 13. So,

Ophiuchus had always been up in the sky with

the rest of the signs but was not recognized until

the Earth shifted. Astronomers and Astrologists

have known about this since about 130 B.C.

Ophiuchus means “Serpent-Bearer” in Greek

and can be found around the celestial equator.

If anyone is wondering what their new zodiac

sign is, they can look below for their birthday and

check the sign themselves.

Capricorn January 20- to February 16

Aquarius February 16 to March 11

Pisces March 11 to April 18.

Aries April 18 to May 13

Taurus May 13 to June 21.

Gemini June 21 to July 20

Cancer July 20 to August 10

Leo August 10 to September 16

Virgo September 16 to October 30

Libra October 30 to November 23

Scorpio November 23 to November 29

Ophiuchus November 29 to December 17

Get a Different Name Day is on February 13th. Get

a Different Name Day is for those who are not fond of

the name given to them. At birth, we are given a first

name, a middle name and a last name. It wasn't our

choosing. Rather, our parents bestowed it upon us. If

you like your name, good for you. If not, then today is

for you. Take advantage of today to change your

name. If you change your name, don't forget to update

your stationary. And, you will need to notify family

and friends about your new name.

National Tortilla Chip Day is on February 24th.

Today is a holiday with a crunch. One might even

suggest that it is a corny holiday. Well, that's okay

because today is National Tortilla Chip Day. Just a few

decades ago, Americans seldom ate Corn Chips and

Salsa. It's popularity has grown a lot. The day it to

enjoy to that rising popularity of one of America's

favorite munchies. The corn chip recipe was brought

to the U.S. from Mexico by texas businessman Elmer

Doolin.

social networking web pages: 61% of 13- to 17-

year-old have a personal profile on a site such as

MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, or Xanga. Half

have also posted pictures of themselves online.

Older teens (16-17s) and girls especially use the

Internet for social interaction, meeting friends,

and networking.

However, many have also been exposed to the

Internet’s accompanying potential risks.

71% reported receiving messages online from

someone they do not know.

45% have been asked for personal information

30% have considered meeting someone that

they have only talked to online

14% have actually met a person face-to-face they

have only spoken to over the Internet (9% of 13-

15s; 22% of 16-17s).

Dear Alice,

I really like this guy. I told him how I feel. He said he

felt the same, but it does not seem like he wants go out

with me. What should I do?

Confused

Dear Confused,

It is great that you got the courage to tell him If you

have feelings for him, you must have felt very nervous

to confess that you liked him. There could be a num-

ber of reasons why he has not asked you out yet. Maybe

he is busy with school or his family. Or he could have

said that he likes you back because he did not want to

hurt your feelings. Since you already told him that you

have feelings for him, there is nothing else that I can

advise you to do, if this does not work out with him, I

can assure you there will be more guys that like you

back and have the time for you in the future.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty

of their dreams.

Clash of the Titans Cowboys Stadium was the sight of Super

bowl XLV on February 6th, 2011 where the

Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Pack-

ers fought to become this year’s champion

of the NFL. Both teams left everything on

the field and came out to win but not every-

one can be a winner. The Packers made

play after play, keeping the Steelers from

gaining the lead. And all of the penalty’s

pulled the Steelers farther back making it

almost impossible to stay in a winning prox-

imity.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw

in 304 yards with a few critical touchdowns.

Defense was not a problem for the Packers

either, recovering a fumble caused to Steel-

ers running back Rashard Mendenhall and

an interception thrown by Ben Roethlis-

berger which turned into a Packers touch-

down. But this game was not a blowout vic-

tory for the Packers. The game was all in all

a fantastic game filled with excitement and

anticipation and the final score was a fairly

close 31-25. This will truly be a Super Bowl

to remember for years to come!

The Biggest Loser Challenge is not all about

losing weight, it is also about being the healthiest

version of you. Many staff members here at Cali-

part of this Biggest Loser Challenge. All staff that

is a part of this challenge has put in a $25.00 fee

that will be put into a pot and rewarded to the

winner in the end. The race began January 5 with

a weigh in. And just in case some staff workers

bend the truth a bit, Coach Angel will be doing all

of the weigh ins. There

will be weigh ins every

Monday, and for every

pound they gain they

pay $2.00 into the pot.

The Biggest Loser

winner will be reward-

ed with all of the money that the staff has put in.

Mr. Walpole will be in charge of doing all of the

calculations so there will be no errors! So stu-

dents be sure to help your teachers and other

staff workers stay on pace and encourage them to

work their hardest. Words of encouragement can

go a long way in a challenge like this. Who do

you think has what it takes to be the Biggest Los-

er?

The boys soccer team has been working

really hard this year. The boys team has

now three wins and two loses, as well as two

ties in league. The boys are doing very well

and went to bishop and tied them five to

five. Thomas Wil-

liams, Kenny Avery,

Will Hawkins, and

Marvin Arevalo

scored to tie the

Bishop game. Con-

grats to Marvin who has scored his first goal

of the season. They are currently fighting for

third place with Frazier Mountain. The Ra-

vens boys soccer team has beat Desert, Kern

Valley twice and tied with Bishop and Fra-

zier Mountain. The boys soccer team did a

good job against Notre Dame but lost 3-1.

Ravens Boys

Basketball This year the California City High School

boy’s basketball teams have had a tough

season. Your J.V. boys have practiced hard

while trying to learn the fundamentals of the

game. With the loss of a few players Coach

Clark has struggled to keep his team in the

game, but even if they are losing he tries to

tell them to keep their heads in the game

and keep playing hard.

Your Varsity boy’s team has had a long

hard season. When Coach Sheen was asked

what he thought about the season all he

could say was “I hate losing and I love win-

ning. I would rather have my team lose and

have hustled than win and have slacked off.”

As the season comes to an end it can sure be

said that the Ravens have learned: HUS-

TLE, LOYALTY, & RESPECT.
