editor's LetterWelcome to the February issue of CityPages! After the interest that the first issue generated, we have compiled a second edition with diverse contributions that we hope you will find relevant as well as thought provoking.

At first glance, you'll notice many changes from the first issue. In addition to tasteful modifications in design, the emphasis of CityPages has broadened to include various articles, travel reports, book reviews, and other materials! We were lucky enough to receive many great submissions, and out of those, we selected what we thought were the best ones. We hope this trend continues.

This month, as we celebrate the triumph of the great state of Kuwait over the challenges it has faced in the past, and reflect upon its proud history and heritage, we invite you to enjoy a commemoration of Kuwaiti men and women who are making a difference at home, and are giving this great nation recognition abroad. We offer fresh, exclusive interviews, and hope we get the message across that Kuwait’s got talent and the future looks bright.

By the way, our March Issue will be devoted to Mothers’ Day and advance input is welcome!

Please send us your comments and suggestions. We are beyond flattered by the feedback we received about the January issue, and are looking forward to hearing what you think about the February issue.

In the meantime, Happy National and Liberation Days, and enjoy the celebration of life with everyone you meet!

ArT & CULTURE

Mike Johnston, a tall, clear-eyed Texan, pulls a brown paper sketchbook out of the messenger bag he designed himself, with cartoon goldfish splashing across the front flap. This sketchbook is his repository of “presketches,” artistic prototypes that eventually take life in larger pieces of art. As I thumb through the book, I see contour drawings in red and black ink, directions to places in Kuwait scrawled in the corners, magazine collages, hand-drawn barcodes, and cheeky comic book-inspired faces leering up at me. A tsunami threatens to crash against the journal’s edge, as if it were the shore. With only a touch of color, static sketches suddenly have come alive.

From their beginnings in the sketchbook, Mike’s ideas take on larger life in the form of murals, paintings, bags, and shoes, done in latex, acrylic, or fabric paint. His work, characterized by bold lines and vivid color schemes, can be described as “modern cartoons with a street edge,” incorporating hip-hop and reggae elements with traditional Asian artistic symbols. The development of this eclectic style is a product of the artist’s personal tastes and global travel.

A graduate of Austin College’s Art and Education Master’s program, Mike Johnston realized he was a serious artist during childhood, when his mother posted his scenes of battle, violence, and war, enacted by G.I. Joe action figures on the fridge. This early interest indicates a preference for action, movement, color, and boldness in art. Mike cites artist Piet Mondrian (whose style is characterized by simple shapes, bold colors, and strong lines) as a famous artist that influenced his style. American artists Blaine Fontana and Sam Flores, whose paintings, T-shirt designs, and shoe designs inspired Mike, also affected his development.

The wave used in Japanese art appears on several pages of the sketchbook. In fact, Mike Johnston’s travels in Asia influenced the symbols he uses in his art. Before his arrival in Kuwait two years ago, he spent two years in China on an international teaching contract. Working in Shanghai enabled him to explore artistic expression in galleries, advertisements, and on the street. Some of his artwork even features graffiti-style paint drips. In addition, rickshas in fantastic colors, which Mike encountered on trips to Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka, are a subject of his art.

Mike has painted a few Middle Eastern-themed pieces, and hopes to explore the Arab world to add breadth to his artistic sensibility. Back in Texas, Mike took a college course on Arabic calligraphy. “I can’t read it but I definitely have an appreciation for the beauty of it,” he says.

Living in Kuwait encourages him to create art. He says, “Kuwait is good for people who have hobbies. As an expatriate, I have less social distractions, and more time to paint. The culture has been eye-opening for me.”

Mike began painting shoes as a side business in Shanghai. His “Squeaky Sneaks,” sneakers painted with Mike’s art or customized per the wearer’s preference, have been bestsellers in the United States and are beginning to catch on in Kuwait.

Mike offers sound advice for budding artists: “It all comes about with practice. If I

look back at my early paintings, I notice an evolution. We are from a generation that wants to see immediate gratification. Your first painting, your first pair of painted shoes is not going to be good. See art you like and try to

mimic it and make it your own. Be persistent.”

As I hand the sketchbook back to Mike, satisfied with my excursion into the mind of an artist, Mike discusses his creative impulse and the

true point of art becomes clear. “At the end of the day, I get so much joy from being able to create something,” he says. “When all said and done you can see a product that you made. In a way, you’re creating beauty, and, as I’ve gotten older, I see how that’s important. It’s a gift.”

Mike also teaches art to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Al Bayan Bilingual School in Hawally.

Johnny Rockets, a 1950s-themed diner that started in 1986 in Los

Angeles, has been in Kuwait for fifteen successful years, appealing to Kuwait’s fascination with America’s deeply rooted sense of nostalgia for a better past. The dream-image of America after the second World War--the beginning of the military-industrial complex, economic independence, a low divorce rate, a boom in real estate and the rise of the suburbs, the space program, the supremacy of the American muscle-car, the popularization of rock and roll, a time when “Made in America” meant quality--has made its way into Kuwaiti culture in the form of this fun, family-friendly dining experience.

Johnny Rockets offers standard American classics. In addition to variations of fries and made-to-order hamburgers, you can get the things you really miss: root beer floats, chili, and apple pie. For the choosy eaters in your group, Johnny Rockets offers plenty of salads, sandwiches, and kids’ meals. The chef cooks your food

in front of you, and the friendly servers deliver your order with a ketchup smile on your plate “just to cheer you up.” Vegetables are delivered daily to each of Kuwait’s seven Johnny Rockets locations, guaranteeing freshness and quality.

To recreate the ’50s nostalgia-diner feel, Johnny Rockets features a lunch counter and black, red, and white booths for families. Posters of vintage Coca-Cola ads serve as authentic décor. Jukeboxes at every table, checkerboard floors, and classic rock music set the mood. Never mind that diners may have no association whatsoever with the Big Bopper, or have any idea that Route 66 was paved over by I-40 years ago. Johnny Rockets is successfully peddling the dreams of an older, long gone America to a mass of eager non-Americans.

The most common new Year’s Resolution is to get in shape. I made this resolution this year. I have been thinking of joining a health club for a long time. I wanted a place that offered not only equipment but also classes to give me the right advice on exercises that are effective for me.

When I think of gym, the image of Arnold Schwarzenegger lifting gargantuan weights in a dingy, tattered facility enters my mind. You know the image. It’s most likely a black and white picture of Arnold squatting over 500 lbs, barefoot, with his shirt off and a look on his face signifying pure pain and torture. Intimidating? Certainly.

I was lucky that Al Corniche Club agreed to give me the opportunity to spend a whole day before I could decide.

A day before my visit, I received a call from Al Corniche reminding me of my appointment, which already started making me feel special. I later received an SMS confirmation. When I arrived at the club, I only had to mention my name at reception and the staff knew about me. They welcomed me to the club and seated me at the waiting area.

Within no time, the friendly sales manager arrived, who took me for a tour of the club. We started with the VIP area. everywhere I passed, the staff was very friendly and greeted me well.

I went to see the VIP waiting area, VIP swimming pool, hydropool and Moroccan bath, ice room, and sauna room. The entire place was quiet and relaxing, I could hardly see other people, since they were in a

private area. The VIP area also had its own private gym.

I was told the same facilities are on the other side for female VIPs.

The sales manager then took me to the other side of the club, which was open and had more people. We went through the business area, the restaurant, and the outdoor pools, which I was told had heating systems. I looked at the other side and found that Al Corniche actually has a private piece of the beach. There was also an area for kids with their own pool.

next, I went to the gym. I saw people using various equipment and machines. It had private studios and never seemed crowded.

revIeW / CLUBMy next appointment was with my friendly fitness trainer, Yves. He already knew my name so I didn’t have to introduce myself. I believe they have a facial recognition system installed. I was truly impressed.

Yves asked my approval before asking me personal question about my health history and daily routine. He asked my approval before measuring and weighing me. At the end I was handed personal fitness diary where a program was designed for me.

Yves then showed me around the gym and told me that Al Corniche had the best trainers in Kuwait. Trainers wearing red shirts are present for any kind of assistance, while trainers in black are private trainers and busy working with a client.

It was almost time for my next appointment at the spa. Yves offered me coffee at the restaurant and convinced me to think seriously about myself, and to take time out of each day for my needs.

At the spa, an assistant who knew me by name was waiting for me. I changed into a spa-provided bathrobe and pair of slippers before going to the hydropool, a large, private pool with music playing. I could have stayed forever, but a masseur was waiting for me outside.

I was offered water and then asked to relax on a wooden chair next to the fireplace in a small, hot room. I was already miles away from Kuwait. My masseur explained his procedure and asked me about my skin. He gave me a full body scrub, after which I took a shower. next, I received a hot-oil massage. My masseur inspected my muscles, pointing out that my muscles were tired in areas and needed extra attention. He suggested I undergo a deep-tissue and mixed-massage in those areas. Towards the end, I received

a hot-stone massage, and after an hour and a half, I was asked to shower and change. I felt great. My masseur gave me fresh fruit and lemon tea to conclude my stay. By that time I had made up my mind--I was going to join Al Corniche.

Al Corniche Club, designed with distinctive Thai-inspired blue roofs, has some of the finest gyms, tennis courts, and spas in Kuwait, not to mention Kuwait’s first hydropool. It provides a professional fitness training atmosphere for those serious about maintaining overall body health.

“How do I rank myself, can anyone rank herself? I don’t know…” Abeer Al Yaseen, CEO of Glamour Salon Company in Kuwait, sits in her high-backed white chair, modestly evading my question of how good of a makeup artist she is, in a country with a salon on every corner. I am in her office, sipping an apple, orange, and lime cocktail, surrounded by interior decorations designed by Abeer herself.

How can Abeer--beautiful, talented, shrewd--not be a diva? After finishing a degree in Computer Science, Abeer followed her passion in 2001 by taking ownership of her mother’s salon, expanding it, refining the services, and undergoing specialized training outside of Kuwait (one

of the few salon owners in Kuwait who has done so) and is now on her way to building a beauty empire.

“Almost every month, I have an interview on television,” Abeer says. “Beauty is my business, makeup is my passion. Seeing everything beautiful and organized is my nature. Two years ago, I launched my five-DVD project, My Makeup Secrets, demonstrating step-by-step how to achieve luminous, matte, retro, photo shoot, and bridal makeup. I hope my second DVD project will be more successful than the first.”

Abeer does makeup for top Lebanese models Amal Hijazi, Rein Sabti, and Miss Lebanon Lamita Frangia. She has worked on Kuwaiti actresses

and TV personalities, including Nada Fadel of Scoop TV and Zeina Karam for the hit drama Ghada Yousif. Gulf region royal families request her services. She teaches makeup workshops and gives private lessons in Kuwait and abroad. In addition, Abeer and her highly trained staff attend beauty seminars worldwide, including Cosmo Proof Asia 2009 in Hong Kong.

Abeer’s Glamour Salon has eight separate rooms and two areas offering top-to-toe service. The beauty center is growing: Abeer plans to add a photography lounge.

Glamour Salon offers a range of facial and skin care treatments, including the hydradermie facial concept from Guinot Institute Paris, which hydrates the skin using concentrated electrical induction to penetrate the dermis. Guinot, available exclusively at Glamour Salon, provides a full package of spa therapies, including aromatherapy, chemical peels,

detoxifying treatments, and the “Beauty Flash” mini-facial for all skin types.

Since makeup looks best on clean, hydrated skin, Abeer offers “Beauty Flash” as an exclusive part of her bridal package. Hydrating or whitening masks are optional. Anything out of my normal routine leads to skin sensitivity, but this facial only resulted in smooth, calmer, firmer skin. I recommend “Beauty Flash” to newcomers who want to experience a fun, quick facial.

Private day spa rooms, decorated with plants and dim lights to create a relaxing mood, include beverage service, Jacuzzi, and TV. Clients can choose from a list of high-end spa treatments, including hot stone massage, aromatic body massage, skin renewing exfoliation, Bella

Lucce bath treatment, detoxifying massage, anti-cellulite sculpting, and anti-water retention sauna masks, which help slim, firm, and contour the body, and soften the skin. The spa uses all-natural scrubs made from kiwi and sugarcane.

Glamour Salon also offers noninvasive carpal mechanical massage, which combines ultrasound with electrical current to burn fat, effectively toning, slimming, and firming the body.

A trendy nail bar features spa therapy, foot massage, sculptured nails, nail art, extensions, acrylic nails, and Illusion, an updated and exclusive gel-acrylic blend with results that last two to three weeks.

The salon’s hair station offers hair treatment, professional coloring, cutting, straightening, relaxing, and styling. I underwent the smoothing keratin treatment for hair (the most requested at the salon), which combines cream conditioners and anti-frizz treatments for noticeably soft, sleek, hair with bounce and shine. A salon’s effectiveness can be judged by professional results that a client can’t replicate

at home, and this treatment won me over. Glamour Salon also includes a reconstructing hair loss treatment for dry, breakable hair (perfect for the dry climate of Kuwait).

Glamour Salon truly distinguishes itself in bridal makeup. Abeer’s makeup style is appropriate to the tastes of the region, but she describes her style as “more international, a sophisticated mix of Kuwaiti with Lebanese and European styles.”

Abeer primarily uses Kryolan from Germany, a makeup brand used for stage and cinema. This makeup brand supplies a full range of colors and provides longwearing, comfortable coverage that shows up well in photographs. Abeer uses the brand herself.

All makeup is allergy-tested and FDA-approved. Clients may choose sterilized or disposable brushes and tools. Abeer does bridal makeup by request, and permanent makeup (tattooing) is her specialty.

As I thanked Abeer for her hospitality, I noticed a display of hair accessories arranged by color--a striking mix of pearls, ribbons, peacock feathers, bows--lining the wall in the reception area. “A Kuwaiti designer works for us, and we special order from outside the country. It’s a fun thing we like to sell, and it’s becoming popular.” I can’t help but think that the salon is an extension of the owner’s personality: well cared for, down to the last detail, welcoming and feminine, innovative and trendy--glamorous.

Glamour Salon is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. To book an appointment, contact 22626277 or visit www.glamoursalonco.net for more information. Clients receive updates on new offerings. With a 32-page menu of services, you’re sure to become a VIP in no time. For a copy of My Makeup Secrets, visit Glamour Salon or Virgin Megastore.

February 2010

Fahad Al-Arbash, founder of Abhar Catering Company, received his B.A. in Finance in 1994 from the University of Pacific, California. When he returned to Kuwait, he began working for a local bank, working his way up the corporate ladder for nine years. Wanting more out of his career and eager to start his own venture, Fahad decided to join the family business, Kuwait Agricultural Company, which specializes in supplying over 1,500 items and foodstuffs to hotels, restaurants, co-ops, and supermarkets throughout Kuwait. In his new job, he began to create a business plan to engage and unite the strengths of Kuwait Agricultural Company with what he hoped would be a new catering company. Fahad explains, “With Kuwait Agricultural Company as the foundation, I have not only the financial support, but also the means from which to start

MADe IN KUWAIT

a catering company, such as the food products needed, storage spaces, refrigeration, and delivery trucks. It seemed a natural extension to include catering as one of our many valuable services.”

In 2005, Abhar Catering Company was born. It started as a small catering operation, Fahad recalls. “When we started we didn’t even have a proper office, it really was a small set up, and yet I managed to secure a small contract from one of my friends, and the contract entailed providing r e a d y - m a d e meals to support the staff

working at one of the oil drills, who needed all their meals provided for them, as they really are stuck out in the middle of nowhere!”

With this, Abhar was on its way, while it was a small

successful you have to provide a level of service that no one else is providing. In short, you have to have a unique selling point.” Fahad believes that with the acquiring of the ISO 22,000, Abhar Catering Company truly is unique. Fahad explains, “With the right staff as the backbone, I feel that our company can accomplish anything. I was confident in our standards, and so we sought to acquire the ISO certification that

combines not only HASP, which deals with food safety requirements, but also the ISO 9001 that teaches management to organize their documentation to ISO specifications. The ISO certification requires the following of a standard, which ensures that our kitchens and our food preparation methods are as hygienic as possible. No other catering company in Kuwait can compete with this. We are the first catering company in Kuwait with this certification, and we are extremely proud of this achievement.”

Abhar kitchens employ over 180 people, in a 2,000 square meter area equipped with state-of- the-art kitchen equipment, and presided over by their Executive Chef, Mohammad Ali, who has joined Abhar from the prestigious Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai, and has over eight years of experience working in some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the world. All other kitchen staff, including the Soux Chef, have experience working in various five-star hotels throughout the region. Fahad tells us, “We have also employed a dietician to ensure that our meals meet our clients’ dietary requirements and to ensure that our meals are in general healthy meals.”

Abhar Catering Company employs dedicated staff that will tailor any event and setting to clients’ requirements with strict attention to details, and everything from linens, place settings, silverware, and dinnerware presented with the most exacting of standards. Fahad

says, “The setting for every function is unique, we do not repeat any setting, ensuring that every client receives something special created just for them. We constantly create and develop new ideas for every client.”

Fahad tells us, “Abhar Catering Company has only just begun, and we are excited for what the future has in store. We will continue to dedicate ourselves to the Kuwait market, as this market will always be our first priority, and in the very near future we hope to expand upon our success and venture into regional markets such as Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.”

start, it provided the team with the necessary confidence to seek bigger contracts and gain more momentum for the business. After two years, Abhar had gained enough profit and experience to seek out and bid for a lucrative contract with the Ministry of Education, supplying 15,000 meals daily to all kindergartens in Farwaniya and Jahra. Through the acquisition of this tender, they purchased a large piece of land in Ardiya to serve as a base from which to package the meals. Fahad tells us, “The premises in Ardiya are so large that I decided to expand even further and build on the top of the ground floor a further two floors. It was June 2008 and now we were officially ready and fully serviced to handle small or large orders. Abhar was on it way.”

Starting a catering company in a market already full with catering services was by no means an easy feat. To conquer this hurdle, Fahad explains, “The problem with Kuwait is that there is huge competition, and to be

Chocolateness’s slogan, “when deliciousness speaks chocolate,” barely describes the sinful goodness of a chocolate molten cake. A dozen chocolate cakes in tinfoil cups drowned in hot chocolate sauce came to our office, packed like a wedding photo album or a new dress shirt, inviting celebration and the chance to lick a spoon clean.

Two years ago, four family members (Abdulwahab Al-Homaizi, Jassim Al-Homaizi, Rakan Al-Fadallah, and Abdullatif Al-Homaizi) took their chocolate and caramel molten cakes and chocolate shots to exhibitions, where they received an excellent customer response. Their philosophy is to provide a no-frills, elegant dessert made with high quality and flavor. The result is a creation that needs no embellishment--the taste says it all. “Everybody in Kuwait loves chocolate,” Abdulwahab says. “We knew we had

a product that would be popular among all age groups, and we had a growing fan base, so we decided to go ahead with it.”

Chocolateness delivers chocolate molten cakes and caramel molten cakes to homes and businesses in Kuwait, and chocolate shots are available only at

exhibitions. At first, the family answered phones and prepared deliveries themselves, but now the growing business has a separate helpdesk and a team of drivers to ship out orders. Abdulwahab plans to open an outlet in three or four months for the currently home-based business.

“We’re not sure yet where we want to open our shop, but we’re almost sure we’re going to add pink molten cakes and vanilla molten cakes to our menu.”

If they’re as good as the chocolate molten I had (and I’m sure they will be), Chocolateness will have all of Kuwait scraping the bottom of their tinfoil cups, savoring every last bit of deliciousness.

If you don’t want to quit smoking, then don’t!

Why would you stop? Smoking eases your tension, gives you an outlet while thinking or working on your paper, and adds pleasure to your recently taken meal while having a sip of hot coffee.

Ignore whatever cautions are fed to smokers and just enjoy the blissful upshot of inhaling nicotine. That’s what matters, anyway.

You can even smoke inside your house. Doing so won’t qualify you as a felon just because your housemates will become the preys of your slight indiscretion.

Of course, you have an idea of its effect. In fact, you must have been interested once in reading material related to smoking. But it scared you, so you quit—reading.

Obviously, you disregarded the doctors’ advice and elders’ rebuke on the effect of smoking, or else, you would have quit a long time ago, right?

Okay, let’s give this issue a little substance and consider this scenario: How will you react when your sweetheart, in utmost charm but firm desire to have you drop the vice, asks you to do just that?

You would think that there might be a slight problem here because this concerns an affair of the heart.

But that’s easy; just imagine the worst thing that it could inflict:

First—that your lover has changed because you compromised your relationship and opted to continue smoking rather than obey a firm request to quit.

Second—that your partner may start socializing again, without you, may become an active outdoor person, may probably be induced to smoke, and may like it for some time, until smoking becomes a habit too.

But that’s fine. Your partner chose it. Let your lover have trouble breathing because of heavy smoking.

Let your sweetheart know how hard it is to be attacked by a smoker’s cough, to reek with a smell of stale tobacco all over the body—even hair—and to go out in the wee hours of night just to buy a cigarette when the last one has been puffed out, and...

Okay, brace yourself, this one stings the hardest:

Third—your darling is enjoying the new lifestyle, loves the new environment, and seems happy with a new circle of friends—and a new lover.

That’s it! That last one is the only possible worst thing that could happen, right?

The cure? Find a better lover that could make

mall-strollers take a second look, one that will make your family and friends proud.

Well, I understand it takes time and a little struggle to convince

yourself that you’ve already fallen out of love. But, you know, sometimes,

loving means giving love up.

Let’s scale up a more substantial concern.

Actually, you have another heart to take care of—literally. But it’s peanuts nowadays, and you have options: either you stop smoking with all the elaborate diet and exercise, or choose the painless medical process you can avail of, only when necessary.

See all those doctors around? They were trained abroad in the latest scientific approach. These specialists are now equipped with state-of-the-art medical gear and could treat you with their eyes closed.

If you can’t breathe because the nicotine has clotted your main vein and lungs, and seriously has affected your heart, these guys are ever available.

Let’s say you’ve suffered a heart stroke due to rampant smoking.

They will merely put you in deep slumber and slice a bit of your skin from the entire leg to get the right vein that they will use to bypass your heart. A little touch in your lungs is necessary, of course, and voila!

The next thing you’ll feel when you wake up is as if you’re a brand new human that didn’t even smoke at all. No pain!

That is, if you still have a lung that the surgeons could work on.

But my point is, even if you don’t quit smoking and suffer emphysema, difficulty breathing, or whatever, the necessary perfect medical attention is nearby—just a dial away.

What are the cost of treatment, time element, and chances of recovery in both cases of heart ailments?

Well… I’m not exactly a love guru or a heart surgeon.

Just stay healthy then and QUIT smoking.

I was sitting on my bed all night agonizing about yet another trivial issue! My friend has asked me the inevitable question that I honestly couldn't start to answer. It wasn't a hard question. she wasn't asking me to explain once again how E=mc2. However, the answer to that question was as vast, and unlimited as the unknown it self.

"what is your purpose in life? what are you here for?" she asked.

Fortunately, she has informed me that everyone on Earth comes with a purpose. This purpose can't be ignored for long, because once every other necessity in life is met, purpose knocks the door and create restlessness and suffering. You begin searching for something more, for self-actualization.

Tired of thinking, I look at the window, and there I find the new morning and the clouds. Even those fluffy whites have a purpose. As they travels the skies and the lands, they

Self Actualization

travel through our imagination, and give us images we delight in.

"what is my purpose?" I pose the question again.

I read what Abraham Maslow has said about honoring one's skills and talents again, and it sinks in for the first time. How happy I was getting up, getting dressed for the new day, and going to my job? How proud I was about the time I spend in my office, and the piles of papers that await me?

Was I afraid? Do I enjoy participating in the life of the rat race? What talents, and skills I am honoring? Is this life I am living empowering me?

Those simple questions were as important as the answers if not more. It's the courage to ask the question that counted at the time.

As I meet my friend again I thank her, even as I recognize the challenge her question was and is for me.

"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write if he is to be ultimately happy. What a man can be, he must be."

Disciplining Your Child

pSYCHoLogY CLINIC

What is the best way to discipline a child?

Dr. Bibi Sabahat Shah

Disciplining a child is an area of concern for parents. Parents may employ a variety of techniques based on the age of the child and the child’s temperament and personality. Disciplinary methods will likely change as the child gets older and the need for independence increases. While the situation varies for every family, in general, the younger the child, the more firm and consistent rules are needed, coupled with praise, affection, and warmth. As children age into their teens, parents must negotiate a balance between setting firm rules and giving their preteens or teens the

independence they need to begin to make their own choices.

Research in parenting has shown that the best parents are warm, nurturing, and caring, but are also firm about enforcing family rules. These types of parents explain rules and consequences, instead of just creating them. These parents use positive techniques, such as praise and rewards, rather than negative techniques, such as yelling or hitting. Negative techniques are strongly discouraged, since they can cause anxiety and emotional disorders in children.

AReFeH MAnSoURIA World of Fashion

Fashion design has taken Arefeh Mansouri around the world. Her journey into fashion design began in Tehran, where her talent for oil painting as a teenager developed into a strong skill for combining color with texture. Later, Mansouri majored in Fashion Design at LaSalle College in Montréal, Canada. Shortly thereafter, her first line of women’s sportwear premiered in one of Montréal’s finest shops. An invitation from an Italian fashion company landed her the role of head designer, where she worked closely with a former Versace patternmaker. Currently, Mansouri designs evening and bridal wear in Miami, Florida, creating one-of-a-kind pieces that are as beautiful and elegant as the women who wear them.

Where are you from? I was born in Tehran but I grew up in Montréal, Canada.

What does fashion mean to you?Fashion is an art form that allows the outward expression of one’s personality and passion. It is a personification of the designer’s inspiration and the wearer’s solidarity with that inspiration.

When did you start designing? In 2003, I started with women’s sportswear.

When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer? As a child, I designed clothing for my dolls.

What formal training have you taken related to fashion design?I attended LaSalle College in Montréal, where I majored in Fashion Design.

What awards have you received so far?I won several awards in Iran for oil paintings I did as a teenager, and I published a short story in Canada. In fashion design, I was chosen as one of the Best Young Designers of 2008 during Miami Fashion Week.

What do you design?I design primarily evening and wedding gowns, and will be adding tote bags to my collection.

What inspires your designs? The ebbs and flows of the ocean, the colors of nature, the human form.

How would you characterize your style? Avant-garde, timeless, and trendsetting.

Where have you traveled with your work?I have had shows in Milan, New York, Miami, Montréal, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Describe your design process. When I get an idea, I draw it quickly, then I identify its architecture and match-up. I select the appropriate fabrics, create a technical drawing of the design, and then make a sample of the dress, which I send off for manufacturing.

What’s the best part about conceptualizing a design?I enjoy the free flow of thought and seeing how something that begins just as an idea becomes a reality.

How long does it take you to construct a piece? That depends on the design: anywhere from 30 seconds for a simple piece, to days for a one-of-a-kind gown.

Are there any special projects for which you’d like to design? My designs will be featured in a few upcoming Hollywood movies.

Which designer would you like to work with?John Galliano. He’s very innovative.

Tell us about the totes you designed for celebrities attending the 2009 Emmy Awards Pre-Party? I was asked to provide tote bags for the Emmy Award Pre-Party. I was given three weeks to

design, manufacture, and deliver the bags--it was difficult dealing with such a tight deadline and I made the bags with only two days to spare! However, the committee loved the bags so much, they asked me to provide them again next year.

Where can we purchase items from your clothing line?Currently, people can buy my clothing only in stores in the US and in Canada, but I have several pieces available on my web site, www.arefeh.com.

What are your hobbies besides designing?Eating cake and chocolate, playing water sports, and doing photography and home design. I am somewhat of an amateur architect.

Do you plan to have a presence in Kuwait? If I could get the opportunity, I would love to feature my clothing there.

Cookie Johnson, founder of CJ by Cookie Johnson (premium denim for women with curves), pursued a degree in Retailing of Clothing and Textiles at Michigan State University. Her first job was at a department store in ohio where she worked her way up to becoming a buyer. After seven years, Johnson moved to Los Angeles to work at a junior sportswear company then for a buying office scouting and evaluating new lines. After marrying earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jr., she became a full-time mom and worked for the Magic Johnson Foundation.

“Fashion is embracing comfort now,” Johnson says. “People would wear a style or trend whether it flattered them or not. I hope that designers will develop an awareness and appreciation of the true female form--and design for all women.” This is the philosophy behind CJ by Cookie Johnson.

CooKIeJoHnSon

Would you be willing to sell CJ in Kuwait?

Absolutely. We are already selling in Canada and

we are talking about selling overseas. I think

women around the world would appreciate CJ.

Many people in Kuwait are starting their own fashion companies. What advice can you give to people who want to start up a successful clothing line?

Get the right people around you. Work with

people who are seasoned. My partner Michael

Glassner is the founder of Seven, Citizens, and

Rich & Skinny Jeans. He is famous for knowing

about denim, and has absolutely been one of

the reasons CJ has been so successful.

Finally, how would you characterize your personal sense of style?

I love to stay on top of the trends, but I

definitely have designers that I am loyal to.

Because denim is so much a part of my life

now, I’d say I’m more casual, but I love ot dress

denim up. With a beautiful top and heels, you

can’t go wrong.

How long has CJ been in the market? When did it debut?

CJ debuted Spring 2009 in just a few Nordstrom stores as a test run. When it started to sell out, we expanded into more stores by summer. By the fall, CJ was at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and about 450 boutiques nationwide in the US. It’s been a whirlwind first year for the brand.

What do you consider when designing jeans for women?

It depends on the woman you’re designing for. With CJ, I wanted to embrace women with curves. There is an entire demographic out there that has been neglected. I know, because I am a part of this demographic. I am a curvy size 8--and although I love premium denim, I could never find anything that fit well. That’s because the industry focuses on one body type.

What makes the perfect pair of jeans?

Your jeans should feel like they hug you in all the right places. The fabric should feel comfortable without bagging out by the end of the day. Most of all, they should give you confidence!

What do most women see as the “problem area” in trendy jeans?

Anyone who has curves has had the challenge of feeling like a stuffed sausage in their jeans,

or having muffin top because the waist is too low. CJ by Cookie Johnson was designed with a little more room in the thigh, a little more room in the tush, and still a waist that comes in.

What kind of feedback have you been getting so far from your customers?

Everything from tears of joy to thank you letters. I’ve had women say they had given up on jeans, and finally feel like they can be stylish again.

Where can I buy a pair?

Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales stores and online, boutiques in the US, and at www.zappos.com and www.myshape.com.

What are the new trends in jeans?

For summer we’ll see some lightweight denim drawstring trousers, but mostly it’s leggings, leggings, and more leggings. Plus, we have an awesome new superstretch fabric that is really amazing in this style.

Will you expand your brand to include other clothing or accessories, or will you specialize in jeans for now?

We want to be the best at what we do. For now, we’re focusing on denim, but down the road, you never know!

When did you start racing jet skis?

I used to go to my cousin’s races when he was 16 (the legal minimum for jet skiing). I liked it, so I started racing in 1996. When I studied abroad in the US, I began taking the sport more seriously.

What awards have you won?

I was the first Kuwaiti to win the World Championship at Lake Havasu, USA, and I won three years in a row, from 2006 to 2008. I placed second in the King’s Cup in Thailand, which is the second most prestigious race in the world.

How do you prepare for a race?

The Kuwait Sports Authority gives me sports leave so that I can focus and prepare for the race. In the morning, I head to the gym for

cardio and swimming, then I have lunch and work on the jet ski. In the afternoon, I train on the jet ski, which is usually near a beach house or by Nino in Shaab. I eat healthy and avoid junk food. If you’re physically unprepared, halfway through the race, fatigue will set in and you won’t be able to perform. I get my jet ski fully serviced. To be a racer, you have to have a mechanic who is available 24/7. Something as small as a loose screw could end up costing you the race.

How do you keep yourself technologically updated?

If you fail to adapt to change, the competition will eventually gain an advantage and you won’t win. Any improvement to the jet ski that will make you even a second faster on a turn will help you gain a minute in the race. Handling is

You see them at the beach every weekend: hotshot jet skiers waving at onlookers while slapping the water into submission. CityPages is proud to interview Kuwait’s own Yousef Al-abdulrazzaq, the first Kuwaiti to win the World Championship in jet skiing, and not just once, but three times in a row.

27

the most important component that helps in a race. If I’m not comfortable with the handling, the jet ski becomes hard to control. Fatigue sets in, and I end up turning at lower speeds, which makes me lose time.

How are races structured?

Jet skis are like dirt bikes in water. We have a track that is different for every competition. A race is usually 20 minutes long, about

15 laps. In the UAE Season, 50 to 60 racers from

nine countries compete, and in the World Championship, 200 to 300 racers represent 30 countries. Racers place themselves in Beginner, Expert, or Pro classes, at 800-1600 cc. I race in the Pro 1600 open class and use a Seadoo.

How does weather affect racing?

Extreme winds or an accident will stop the race. In Kuwait races are timed during high tides because races start from the shore, but in Dubai the races start from the sea so the tide is no problem.

How do you feel during a race?

I’m used to racing and I know my competition, so I’m confident. But in the last two races I had accidents that were caused by other racers, so I’m more cautious. Sometimes racers have upgraded from a lower class, so accidents happen.

How does a racer upgrade to a different class?

You rate yourself. I started in Expert class. When you win first, second, or third place in the World Championship, you go up a class. Forty racers are in a class. Your new goal is to beat the better people.

How does winning feel?

When I won the World Championship in 2006, I felt great, because the previous two years I lost the lead due to small problems--my steering screw came off so I couldn’t make turns, and another time my jet ski sucked in a plastic bag. In 2006 when the team came back, people from the Kuwait Sea Sports Club, the Kuwait Sports Authority, Zain (my sponsor for over three years), the media, and my family welcomed us as VIPs, which was

nice.

What do you do after the race?

Your body has been holding tight to a jet ski that is buffeted by waves. This works out muscles that you didn’t know could be worked out, like your neck, shoulders, back, thighs, and even ankles. This takes a lot of energy, so after the

race I rest for two or three days to recover.

What are your future goals?

It’s easier for Kuwaitis to go to the World Championship, because the Kuwaiti Sports

Club takes us as a team and the Kuwaiti Sports Authority grants us sports

leave and covers our expenses. I already have a jet ski and

a team in the US as well. However, the paperwork and shipping time for going to the World Championship takes effort. Former World

Champions who may not have the resources to

go all the way to the US for the World Championship race in the UAE Season.

I f I beat them, I have achieved something, and I think the UAE Season is harder to win than the World Championship. I won the title

and know what I can do, but now I want to stay on top, keep fit, and race against the best.

What does the racing scene look like in Kuwait?

Kuwaiti racers are some of the strongest in the world. I won the World Championship in Pro Class, and other Kuwaitis won in other classes

such as the amateur and expert classes, and new talents are being recognized.

The Kuwaiti Sports Club organizes a

series o f

f ive

between May and

September. It needs our

help so we can be on the same level as in te r na t iona l events.

What advice can you give others about jet ski racing?

To excel in this sport, you have to have nerves of steel. You can’t be afraid to pass someone or afraid of hitting him. You have to have timing, patience, and a bit of wisdom. In any kind of motor sport, you have to be cautious. If you abuse the machine, it will turn against you. In the World Championship a rider died in an

accident, so that kind of

opened people’s eyes. Racing at over 90 mph with 20 riders close to each other--at that speed you will hurt yourself. I’ve been injured, but not severely. My wrist, knee, and ankle have all been injured, but the worst was a disk herniation in my lower back. This year I’m racing again, but with caution. It’s not something you can mess around with.

What inspired you to open the We Love Kuwait store?Like many new parents, we started reading to our son Dhari, even before he was born. We ended up buying many children’s books, but we always felt that something was missing in all of these books--simply put, the absence of a Kuwaiti touch. We recognized a void in the market that needed to be filled, so we started researching to see if other parents and educators felt the same way we did, and everybody shared our wish to see something with Kuwaiti significance for our children.

Everyone we interviewed offered their help for the execution of this project. After carefully studying the project and after numerous consultations, we decided to create something original that embraces the Kuwaiti essence. The first series of books are geared toward the Kuwaiti child, rich with developmental activities like reading, coloring, rhymes, puzzles, and, most importantly, these books carry basic messages about health, the environment, and our culture.

Books prove to be an excellent medium for the exchange and acquisition of knowledge.

We believe that our younger generations can significantly benefit from the knowledge that is imparted through these books. We seek to aid in the development of our beloved Kuwait. This is our ambition and this is the purpose of the www.welovekuwait.com books, which later turned into a bigger project: the specialized bookshop.

Why did you choose to make activity coloring books instead traditional storybooks? I chose coloring as our theme because coloring is a recognized and established

method of children’s education. When children color a certain page, they spend a long time focusing on it, which makes them enjoy the message the picture is sending. If a child was to be fed the thoughts of throwing trash in the garbage can through a coloring page with an environmental awareness theme, the child will think twice before littering. The coloring and learning process might encourage the child to

eat homemade food rather than unhealthy takeout.

We lovekuwa i t . com books also contain

fun little songs that we wrote especially for

kids in Kuwait! Children love singing rhymes and

also connect to them well. Rhymes are an excellent tool to teach children of

every age, even before a child learns to hold a pen

or open a book, babies enjoy their mommy's and daddy's

voices; especially when reading rhymes!

Why did you decide to focus on children’s education in Kuwait? The future of Kuwait lies in the competence of our future generations. Our children are the essence of how we identify ourselves as Kuwaiti or world citizens. To develop our society, we must build a keen sense of what we like to call Kuwaitism. The core Kuwaiti values that we would like to promote in our youth are commitment, loyalty, and patriotism. The key to the future is knowledge and awareness, so education is essential to the goal of a strong society.

What does this store specialize in?Our store opened three years after I published my first book. We are seeing a demand for more items and educational aids, and are trying to make it easier for teachers and other individuals who want to purchase books in large quantities. We had to make this step to provide what is missing in the Kuwaiti market: educational tools that will help children learn about manners, health and nutrition, environmental values, and our Kuwaiti culture.

Where is the We Love Kuwait store located? We are in Muthanna Complex, Mezzanine, Shop 122. Our books are also available in the major book outlets of Kuwait, including Virgin Megastore, Jahrir, and the Sultan Center. Our books are widely available at book fairs held in private schools all over Kuwait. We are launching our online shop soon.

What are your qualifications? I am a certified translator. I worked in Kuwait University for many years. I’m a published writer and I have written several articles in Arabic and English about children's rights and wellness for various newspapers and magazines in Kuwait. I am a lactation educator and my background in nutrition allows me to extract short rhythmic messages from the workshops I teach for use in fun books that children can enjoy and learn from.

Who buys your books? Young parents, concerned grandparents, and visitors and expats who wish to take them as souvenirs or gifts when they return to their countries. Teachers buy in bulk from us. Everyone who is aware of the importance of teaching children healthy eating habits, environmental awareness, good manners, and other important issues buy our books.

How do you see the future of organic products in Kuwait? Bright! More and more people are trying to imprint healthy concepts in their children. People are trying to improve their lifestyle and diet, and going green and organic is part of our continued growth and prosperity.

What are your other activities? I’m a full-time mother of two, I write and illustrate my books, and create books for major companies in Kuwait who want to be part of the growth of the Kuwaiti child. I offer the only cyber healthy cooking classes in Kuwait. I run the only lactation support group in Kuwait with the help of many wonderful women.

Are you a professional cook or do you have special courses?

I studied nutritional programs in the UK while I lived there and went to organic eating and cooking camps all over the world. However,

people who know me know I come from a health-oriented family. I grew up with health conscious parents who cooked all of our meals and made sure we got all the nutrients we needed. My parents are obsessed with nutrition, health, and exercise, and with food! We all love to cook, and people love to eat our food. My special talent is that I can make healthy food that tastes good.

What are your current projects? I’m working on a book for a major Kuwaiti hospital about what children need to know about hospitals and how to maintain good health. I’m also working on a special book for a company in Dubai. I’m extremely excited about a special project we’re working on, which includes digital books and educational clips for children. I’ve been working closely with teachers and trying to create something original.

What are your future projects? I have so many projects planned for the next five years. I’m trying to prepare a feasibility study for a project that will make a difference in children’s lives in Kuwait.

What are your latest achievements?I just published two books with an American oil company, one that teaches children about the environment and energy, and another for little scientists, filled with science experiments for children. They can have fun discovering how science is all around us, and can enjoy hands-on science experiments that are as entertaining as they are educational. They will also enjoy making their own fossils, watching a volcano erupt, or writing a secret note with magic ink! This book presents little scientists with their favorite topics--dinosaurs, insects, and space--as well as how to leading a smart and healthy life style by eating wisely, exercising, and organizing their time.

What is your daily routine? On a typical day, I wake up early to get Dhari ready for school. I prepare breakfast for my

family, then my daughter and I drop Dhari off at school. I don’t have a housekeeper or a nanny, so I take my children everywhere I go. When I drop my son to school, I spend some time with his teachers and classmates. I come back home so my daughter can take a nap. I get a lot done while she’s sleeping, including teaching my cyber classes, writing, illustrating, and answering the emails that my blog generates. When my daughter wakes up, I entertain her by letting her watch me do housework. She loves to watch me cook. She chews on everything you give her, so kitchen time is her favorite time.

am used to, since childhood. It suits my busy schedule. Other daily activities include book time, exercising with my children, arts and crafts, and short visits to grandparents and close friends in the afternoons after school and during lunch. We also love gardening and grow many organic herbs and vegetables!

What do you like to do when you are not working? Cooking! I enjoy having my whole family in the kitchen laughing and talking about everything while cooking. I love having our friends over

so joyful and gratifying about this foul-smelling spray. Reckless driving during the parades costs families lives. Let us respect our National and Liberation Days, and protect the notion that they are reminders to us of hope, life, and freedom, not of chaos and irrational behavior.

Who influences you the most?My parents. I admire my father, with his passion for healthy eating, love for cooking, and wise judgments. He knows everything about everything. My mother, with her addiction to

When I have a meeting I drop her off at my mother’s or my best friend’s house for a short play date and go to a meeting. Sometimes I schedule my meetings in the afternoon so my husband can watch the kids. Sometimes, as my biggest supporter and fan, my husband goes to my meetings instead of me! I don’t even have to ask him, he just loves to support me this way, and although his job is demanding (he is a fighter pilot), he takes care of my shop in Muthanna, going there daily to supervise, check on orders, and pick up letters and invitations. He deals with most of my retailers himself. I check my Facebook before I go to bed. It’s a ritual! We sleep early, something I

and cooking and eating all day! That’s what we usually do for entertainment. Nothing makes me happier than people or friends or even my students tasting my cooking and giving me praise.

Do you have a message you would like to share for Kuwait's national Day?

I urge my fellow Kuwaitis to put an end to some of the rituals that have forced themselves into our National Day celebrations and have wrongly turned into customs. The use of foam spray among the parading crowds is not only toxic to the people using it, but is also harmful to the environment. I can’t understand what is

working out, staying fit and happy, and her passion for farming--I wish I could tend a huge vegetable and herb garden like she does.

Who supports you in your projects? My father and my husband are my biggest supporters. They push me forward and motivate me. My husband was the reason I published my first book, and now I have over fourteen bestsellers in the market. My father is the reason I moved on to the next stage, which is opening my shop and making it a successful and meaningful business. Now top pioneer companies approach me to create books for them.

What is physical therapy? We don’t do massage; we return muscular motion back to normal. For example, if a bone is broken, surgeons mend it and allow it to heal, during which time the muscles have become wasted. We reeducate the muscle movement using the resistance of the physical therapist and a range of treatments.

What is the nature of treatment?Physical therapy is noninvasive, but we get to watch surgeries. We treat the muscular-

Yousef Al-SalehPhysical Therapy at Kuwait University

Physical Therapy, a “rare profession,” is a growing field of study in Kuwait. This year, a record number of students--fifty-five--are enrolled in the program at Kuwait University, the only institution in the country that offers the major. Yousef Al-Saleh, a third-year Physical Therapy student at the Allied Health Medical College, has a passion to help others feel better. After completing another year of school, Yousef will undergo two years of rotations in the nation’s six hospitals with Physical Therapy departments before becoming a physician.

skeletal system in all age groups. We use our hands, instruments to measure the range of motion of joints (goniometers), and tape to measure the girth of the muscle circumference, in addition to cryotherapy, ultrasonic machines, electrotherapeutic modalities, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. We motivate patients by making them feel as if they’re in a competition. For children the hospital is more of a playground. I treated a child by playing the “slaps” game with him. We only see the patient two hours a day, so they must continue treatment at home. One of my

that the bigger the weight they lift, the bulkier their muscle mass will become. Not true. Go to the personal trainer (every gym has a physical therapist) to get the proper regimen for your weight training goals, otherwise you will have joint problems.

What kind of personality does this field require? To be a physical therapist you need to have a strong heart and patience, because you witness heartbreaking scenes and rehabilitation takes time. You get to use your strength to help others regain theirs, so over time, you will become mentally and physically stronger.

Do you participate in other activities?I’ve been a member of the Democratic Circle committee (DC) at our college since my first year. The committee is over 30 years old in Kuwait University, and we just celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary. We promote democratic ideals, inculcate morals and ethics, and provide a fun support network for students. We uphold core Kuwaiti values, such as treating female colleagues as we treat our male ones. Our motto is we are all united, nothing differentiates us, and we don’t discriminate between people. We provide the student body with different activities by organizing ourselves into committees. The Sports Committee organizes tournaments for football, foosball, and table tennis. The Academic Committee provides academic support and financial aid. I’m in the Advertising Committee, which promotes awareness about DC and organizes outdoor events. DC will hold a symposium at Mövenpick this February.

What are your hobbies?Kickboxing, going to the gym, scuba diving, and going out with friends. I’m always active and like to be helpful. What are your future goals?

favorite home prescriptions is to tell a patient to wet a towel and wring it, which helps with wrist rehabilitation. We use a pain grading scale of 0-10 to help us gauge patient improvement. A patient came in with a Grade 8 pain and went down to a Grade 3 in one month.

What do you love most about this field?I get to work with my hands and connect with another human being who needs my help. When I see someone who came to me in a wheelchair and now can walk, I feel good.

What are the facilities like at Kuwait University? The Allied Health College is one of the best in the nation, and I am proud to be studying here. Dr. Sureya, one of our best senior professors, has trained several other professors who teach us. I am currently working on a research project with Dr. Mariam Al-Mandeel about patient satisfaction.

What are some of the most common problems you see in Kuwait? We mainly see fractures, broken bones, and road accidents. We see many cases of planter facaitis in people who don’t wear the proper footwear. If you experience 2-3 minutes of pain in the morning that disappears after you’ve taken a few steps, you should reconsider your footwear. We also get bodybuilders who believe

I would like to complete my studies, gain hospital experience, and enroll in a Master’s program. However, as a physical therapy major, I have many options. I could open up a private clinic, or I could work at a well-known football stadium. The sky’s the limit.

Do you have any advice for new students? If you have a plan, execute it! Nobody’s going to stop you, not here in Kuwait.

What message you would like to share with others on Kuwait's national Day?Although Kuwait is small, it accepts the largest voices. Kuwait’s great--the place to be. I was born on February 26, Liberation Day. I’m a true patriot and I love my country.

The Art of Intuitive networking

The New Paradigm for Building Relationships

erfan Hettini

The traditional and prevalent networking method you see at events and business seminars is based mostly on the Law of Numbers and Averages. The traditional networker is usually handing out business cards like a sales person on the roll to meet a sales quota with minimal human bonding. Typically, the psychological pressure manifests itself on the traditional networker’s demeanor as neediness and stiff body language. The traditional networker may feel drained and exhausted, as if the networker is climbing a mountain, which is the outcome of networking with the mindset of a salesperson. While networking the traditional way can produce random and sporadic results, it will, for the most part, reduce your efforts and time to nothing more than a pile of collected cards of warm leads.

Intuitive networking is an art that builds a Rolodex that is ultra-responsive, warm, and ever-expanding, in a way that is effortless, joyful, and has real human connection as its cornerstone. Its success depends on

implementing five different factors in the following order: Mindset, Attitude, Clarity, Intuitive Action, and Acts of Service.

Here’s an explanation of the five success factors of Intuitive Networking that you must use to build a Golden Rolodex, which will enrich your life with rewards beyond your imagination.

1. Mindset: Always come from a place of abundance, generosity, and service first, not from a place of selling or qualifying potential clients, when approaching people.

2. Attitude: Check your attitude to make sure you’re turned on positive; no one wants to connect with a grouch, except for negative people.

3. Clarity: Be clear on your intention. What goal are you seeking to accomplish before you go to an event? What answers and solutions are you searching for?

4. Intuitive Action: Be open to possibilities and make a declaration that you will connect with

erfan Hettini is a Master Intuitive Networker, a movie producer, an entrepreneur, and the author of the powerful book 101 Reasons You Should Fire Your Employer & Start Your Own Business. He is one of America’s most renowned business experts on Entrepreneurial Empowerment. He regularly helps aspiring people awaken the entrepreneur within, and shows them the way out of the rat race toward financial abundance, happiness, and peace of mind.

all the souls that you’re supposed to connect with, and with the highest good for all parties before you enter the event. Then, relax and go about your business without actively looking to connect with anyone and you will intuitively attract the right connections. Listen to your heart and it will tell you where to go and when to act.

5. Acts of Service: When you connect with someone, think of ways you can help that person accomplish a goal without expecting anything in return. Not only is it a rewarding experience, but you’ll initially make new friends and later clients, possibly for life, if you’re consistent at follow-up and keeping in touch.

perSoNAL DEVELOPMENT

You have probably heard the term “the size of your network determines the size of your net worth.” Now, if you are an online business owner, you’ve heard it as “the money is in the list.” With that said, both online and offline business owners realize that building a network is essential to sustaining a viable business in the long haul. Every successful entrepreneur who ever existed achieved goals by first building a loyal network of clients and friends that led to an increasing number of opportunities and influence. After all, it’s not who you that matters, it’s who knows you. The Art of Intuitive Networking differs greatly from the methods of Traditional Networking in many ways, and is a great deal more effective.

Skin, Stress and College

HeALTH & BEAUTY

Every college student faces parental pressure, new social situations, and, of course, the stress of schoolwork. A young woman can lose herself in the excitement and anxiety of college life. However, the most important thing is to never forget yourself. You may procrastinate, only to stay up the night before your paper or project is due, scribbling down your thoughts during that last hectic hour before sunrise--all of this can create an amalgamation of pimples and tired skin. For a young woman of eighteen, this could be beyond scary. Since this is the peak time of your beauty, it’s wrong to hide your youth with layers of makeup and a set of long bangs--you don’t want to look old.

My eldest daughter Reem is attending college in America. While on the phone, she told me that even though Dallas is a lively city and she is making friends there, she misses home. So many things seem foreign to her, including the weather, food, and lifestyle. She even slipped in a complaint or two about her skin’s ill adjustment to her change in environment. I gave her some tips and home remedies which I would like to share with you.

Keep Your Skin CleanChoose a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. If you have dry or normal skin, a cream based cleanser is a good choice. If your skin is oily or combination (oily, dry, and normal in parts) you should use a gel based cleanser. Wet your face and rub it with cleanser in a circular motion, paying particular attention to the area around your nose and along the hairline.

Use a Toner Do not skip using a toner, because it will get rid of any traces of cleanser remaining on your skin, temporarily shrink pores, purify your skin,

and give you a moisturizing effect, depending on the toner ingredients. Swipe the toner all over your skin using a cotton pad or ball. Pay special attention to common problems areas, such as the sides of your nose.

Moisturize Your Skin Always apply a moisturizer. If you have oily skin, use a water based moisturizer. The best moisturizers contain hyuloronic acid. Make

sure you apply your moisturizer before your toner has had a chance to fully dry. Doing this helps seal in extra moisture.

Sun Protection Everyone should always use a sun protection cream, but it is even more important for college students, since you will be walking under the sun.

Home Remedies

Lemon TonerPat fresh lemon juice onto your face with a cotton ball. Let the solution dry. If this irritates your skin, dilute the lemon juice with water or rosewater. Let the solution dry naturally for 15-20 minutes, then rinse your face with lukewarm water. If you do this at least four times a week, you will see a definite improvement in your skin.

Rosewater TonerMix sandalwood powder, rosewater, and two to four drops of lime juice. Work mixture into a paste. Apply onto your face and neck. Let the solution dry naturally, then rinse your face and neck thoroughly. If you do this a few times a the week, you will see results.

Cucumber TonerApply cucumber juice to your face with cotton wool. This is perfect for hot, dry weather because it cools the skin and minimizes pores. Cucumber gives skin a natural glow, making it feel fresh.

Apple Skin LightenerTo minimize pores and fade acne marks, mix boiled apple and about five drops of honey. Apply this mask on your face for 15 minutes.

The Liberation TowerThe symbol of Kuwaiti liberation, the unmistakable sign of the country's resurgence, the Liberation Tower is one of the tallest telecommunications towers in the world. His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, inaugurated this telecommunications tower in Kuwait City on March 10, 1996. This 372-meter structure is about 40 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It was named after the multinational coalition that liberated the nation from seven months of Iraqi occupation during the Gulf War. The tower has now become a symbol of resurgent Kuwait. The structure uses ceramic tiles on the facade from the base to the first mezzanine level, which is about 308 meters above the ground. Three light natural shades provide a geometric design from the base. The tower and the telecommunications complex are divided into three working areas: a public communications center, the revolving observation level and restaurant at 150 meters, and the adjacent plant and equipment structure. There are 18 elevators, two of which are glass enclosed and can accommodate 21 passengers each. They are also among the fastest in the world at 6.3 meters per second. Above the revolving mezzanine, six floors of offices with a total floor space of 12,000 square meters rise up and out in a section encased in anodized aluminum, designed to withstand Kuwait's extreme temperatures. • Pregnant women who do not have regular prenatal checkups run nearly double the risk of losing their babies through miscarriage or neonatal (newborn) death.

• Pelvic inflammatory disease is diagnosed in more than one million women each year. A high percentage of these women requires costly hospitalization or may end up permanently infertile.

CoMMon MenSTRUAL DISoRDeRS

Most women get some discomfort during their period or for the few days preceding their period, but when the pain becomes so intense that it affects her daily activities it is called dysmenorrhea. General measures include explanation about menstruation, reassurance that pain is short-lived, and hygiene during menstruation. Pain-relieving drugs like Buscopan or Ponstan can be used. Sometimes when medical treatment fails and a patient suffers from crippling dysmenorrhea, then surgical treatment may be an option but doctor’s consultation is necessary.

PReMenSTRUAL SYnDRoMe oR PReMenSTRUAL DISTReSSA normal period may be preceded by feelings of nausea, vomiting, tiredness, depression, irritability, and headache, and the patient may become highly emotional. A diet supplemented by additional proteins and vitamins, as well as a sympathetic, reassuring approach toward the patient may help. Pain-relieving drugs like Ponstan and Diclopenac may be administered. If other measures fail, a doctor may provide hormone therapy. Diuretics and a diet low in salt may help with bloating.

AMenoRRHeA oR no PeRIoDSAmenorrhea means the absence of periods. It may be either primary or secondary due to some pathological cause. Primary amenorrhea means that due to some congenital anomaly there is no menstruation. Surgical treatment is required. The age of onset of menstruation is normally 12-14 years, but it can be delayed up to 18 years. Amenorrhea is common during pregnancy and lactation. Secondary amenorrhea is due to pathological causes in the uterus, ovaries, anterior pituitary gland, or hypothalamus, or might be due to other causes, such as acute or chronic illness or sudden changes in weight. Treatment can be

achieved by understanding the underlying pathological cause.

oLIGoMenoRRHeA oR HYPoMenoRRHeA: SCAnTY PeRIoDSScanty periods may be genetic or caused by problems in the uterus, ovaries, or pituitary gland, or may be caused by the same problems that lead to amenorrhea. Scanty periods might be a transitory phase before the onset of amenorrhea. Understanding the underlying pathological causes will help with treatment.

PoLYMenoRRHAGIA oR PoLYMenoRRHeA: ReGULAR HeAVY BLeeDInGThis refers to heavy menstrual bleeding at regular but shorter intervals or normal bleeding at short intervals. The root cause may be in the ovaries or uterus. Treatment can be achieved through understanding the underlying pathological cause.

For the last couple of years, I have encountered many women in Kuwait with health issues. Women’s health is important but most of us neglect ourselves. Either we put our families first, or we are too busy to take of our health. Some women neglect themselves to the point that minor issues turn into major problems. For example, breast cancer, if detected early, can offer high chances of a full recovery. Similarly, women often fail to give importance to several problems, which I will discuss one by one, but first let me explain some terminology associated with gynaecology and obstetrics.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a branch of medicine that deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and women’s health.

It’s funny, isn’t it, how a chance remark can provoke an interesting train of

thought. A chap with whom I work commented that, “Around here, Kuwaiti women are considered to be immensely competent and able. In other words, people who get things done.” The other day, I had the great pleasure of meeting a Kuwaiti lady in a position of some seniority here. She was engaging, visionary, dynamic, and persuasive, and I found myself thinking what it might be like if there were rather more of them. I also noticed myself suffering from an uneasy sense of beleaguerement, since it became embarrassingly clear that the other half, the ones from Mars, with facial hair and bad attitude in the mornings, we men, in other words, are still far too dominant for our own good. Let’s be honest, we've made a testosterone-sodden wasteland of just about everything: politics, education, the economy, the environment... you name it, it's a chaotic black hole. And we made it, pretty much unassisted, all by ourselves. By rights, we should be squealing for some female help, or, at the very least, quietly whimpering, but we're not, because we’ve got tunnel vision and we’re much too proud. I found myself asking–from bitter and repeated experience-when was the last time I asked a female companion for help when trying to map-read? Exactly. I’d rather

stub a cigarette out in my eye than confess to being lost. And I don’t think it’s just me. All of us can swagger convincingly, and that's about it. Swaggering's fine for scraping by in primitive and less emotionally savvy times, when it made us look good in a lion skin whose original owner was probably killed by someone else, but the world we've built is altogether more

complex and a good deal more interactive. We've got stock exchanges, the United Nations, and nuclear warheads. Remember Ronald Reagan - he who that thought Rambo was a national hero? Twenty years ago, he joined the demolition business–he and his friend Mikhail presided over the collapse of a republic–the world changed forever, and it’s been spiralling downhill ever since. Reaganomics and deregulation have been accused with some justification of being the smoking revolver that has triggered the current financial mess we're all trying to wriggle out of. Our own subsequent profligacy has caused the problem and it's all too easy to spend other peoples’ money and swagger your way into a lot of trouble without even realising it. Well, guys, we've had our turn. Time for the other half to get a shout.

We don't need a few ladies in conspicuous positions of power scattered here and there- we need a ten-year prohibition on all forms of male domination. Seriously-think about it-a decade in which men don't get to control anything, from the remote control upwards. Imagine the consequences. For one thing, there would be an instant and massive reduction in armed conflict overnight. Determined, competent females with sensible shoes and large handbags would arrive on African shores and speak very sternly indeed to warring tribespersons and threaten

to take all their toys off them unless this silly nonsense stopped immediately. Of course, nations would routinely bitch about each other in secret (at considerably greater length and with a new, toe-curling venom), but there'd be fewer intercontinental skirmishes and a much lower body count. ER’s in hospitals would be reduced to treating facial scratches from well-manicured, but very sharp, nails.

The economy should clearly be run by women who would simply extrapolate the running of a household to ensuring everyone in the country had their hair cut every fortnight, got proper medical care and were made to turn up for work. City boys who attempt to run international banks would become passé and unnecessary. Let’s be honest, ladies, just look at them. Listen to them. Consider the carnage of the past decade. What on earth were they all thinking? Even now they're still at it. In any sane world they'd all be herded into a shed and blasted with hosepipes until they promised to stop. Everything they say, think, do, watch, read and fill up their iPods with is awful. Ladies, if your partner is a city boy, leave him. Leave him now. Dump him with a text message, right this very second. It'll hurt for about twenty-four hours, then your life will improve beyond measure. Lob him in the shed with the other squeaking posturers and turn on the cold jets. Shut the door and let them shiver.

Men love machines, because machines remind them of themselves. Machines don’t discuss, reason, invite comment, or multitask. The seminal line in a moment of crisis during the movie 2012–(“Bentley. Start.”) Says it all. The car respond with a low, throaty growl. Precisely. What else could be expected of it? As a result of men’s love affair with such machines they quickly became very good at building them and then driving them around much too quickly, shouting "Helloooo, ladies! Look at me in my virtually uncontrollable and incredibly fast machine with underfloor neon and black leather upholstery!" This was cute for a while, but the novelty's worn off now that the planet's teetering on the brink of becoming a blackened, inhospitable cinder.

Please, ladies, for all our sakes: just lock us in a room with some Legosor something. I'm sorry, but we're just too i stupid to save the planet. Looks like you'll have to clean up our mess once again. We’re all depending on you.

"This is all very well, but none too realistic," thinks the female reader. "Men aren't just going to meekly hand over the reins. I know what men are like. They're self-righteous, willful and stubborn."

Oh, dear me. We've got you brainwashed. See, that's what our incessant, ruinous swaggering was all about: pretending to be more dark, complex, and dangerous than we actually are. In truth, your suspicions are absolutely right: we're very, very simple. We're lazy and we like people running around after us. That's all. Literally: that's it. From Napoleon to Barack Obama, from Copernicus to Liam Gallagher. The core software we run on could fit in the memory of a 1980’s computer game without even scraping the sides.

And I think you know this, ladies. Of course you do! You know this, but it's so dazzlingly, sublimely, blindingly obvious you actually doubt that it's true. Many of my friends are women, lucky me. I admire them all. I often find myself nodding sympathetically–my mind is, of course, elsewhere–as they agonise for hours, trying to figure out what we’re thinking, what we all want. Yet no matter who they're talking about, or what the circumstance, from my perspective the answer always seems so glaringly self-evident it could be scratched on the back of a shirt button. This one wants attention. That one wants a biscuit. Everyone wants to win. Every time, somebody else did it.

If I’m allowed one small observation–please don’t think I’m being critical–the only small mistake the ladies make is crediting us with far more mystique than we either possess or desire, knowingly or not. We're frequently impulsive yet wearyingly predictable, but, sadly, that's just about all we’re emotionally capable of. That's why we screwed the planet up. We didn't mean to. We're men, that's all.

Getting into the holiday groove with an afternoon nap, we were awakened by the industrious clamour of vendors setting up a giant outdoor market in the parking lot outside our window. Thousands and thousands of shoes, clothes, and produce were being set on display for the Saturday morning market. (None of the shoes or clothes appeared to be new but I’m certain

the vegetables were.) Then, it was all covered over for the night. I suspected we would not need a wakeup call. Before sunrise, even more vendors arrived with special goods, such as children’s toys, and tools or hardware for the men to investigate while their wives cruised for the family’s wardrobe. The cacophony of the various vendors extolling their wares and the “cheap prices” was deafening. The sound of

A recent exploration of Jordan’s manifold mysteries created an invigorating holiday full of wonder. There is so much diversity in the landscape, the people, and the history of Jordan. Amman, the capital, feels ambitious: everybody seemed to be working, selling, serving, cooking, or growing something. Construction is everywhere, even sometimes inside the boundaries of the many ancient archaeological sites. Church bells and prayer calls compete for the city’s religious attention. The diversity of the citizens and tourists reduces the feeling of being in the minority and my wife and I felt anonymous mingling with the crowds thronging the sidewalks.

activity combined with the smell of breakfast in the cool morning air was delightful, even if it was early.

The colourful canyons of Petra fascinated me visually, while the sheer magnitude of labour involved in creating the ancient architecture of the Treasury was hardly comprehensible to my mind. Petra is itself a cornucopia of paradoxes. The ancient jostles with the modern in a sometimes fluid, sometimes jarring experience. The “Indiana Jones” souvenir shops were tacky, a gaudy blight in the multi-hued canyon. Two men in traditional dress playing an ancient g a m e of what appeared to be sticks and stones while one talked on a mobile phone offered visibly con t r ad i c to r y messages about which century I was in.

Our travel is always an adventure as my wife has to deal with Multiple Sclerosis, and the amount of walking to see Petra was a bit daunting to her. Fortunately, several forms of “taxi” were available, and after much good-natured negotiation, a persistent Bedouin convinced us to take our first camel ride. (The donkeys seemed too small and frail to be safe, and I

don’t do horses.) Tareq asked us questions about Canada and proudly informed us that he had internet in his cave dwelling and that he wanted to marry an Asian girl because they had small eyes and big brains. Having left school in grade eight, he was, at 25, without a doubt a successful entrepreneur who spoke at least five languages. Things are not always as they seem in Jordan: Tareq unknowingly embodied an example of a less obvious paradox.

The camel ride was painful and I was forced to learn some new balancing skills very quickly. Riding a camel is a “been there, done that” experience for me.

Even the taxi drivers were a study in contrasts. Our first driver was like Jason Statham in The Transporter. No questions, no talking. To Petra and back at maximum speed with

minimum interaction. The driver who drove us to the Dead Sea told us, “Your personal happiness is my mission.” He then proceeded to provide an entertaining education about Jordan, Palestine, Lot’s wife, the truth of Sodom and Gomorrah, a history of the royal family and

a lesson in below sea level science illustrated with a stop at the large sign indicating we were about to descend hundreds of meters. The unusual geography was mesmerizing.

Being in Jordan feels like walking through a live kaleidoscope. All the usual markers one uses to get their bearings are in motion. Religions overlap, languages mingle, the ancient and modern compete for real estate, and technology coexists with old traditions. All of these variants are weaving together a new

social tapestry. Jordan's paradoxical culture offers her visitors the opportunity to experience a constant sense of wonder.

A Jordanian friend advised us that we absolutely could not leave Jordan without a visit to a particularly famous

c a n d y store (clearly a thinly veiled request to bring back some treats). Thus, on the morning of our departure, we hiked all over the city with our luggage on our backs searching for this famous

establishment. After several misguided directions from well meaning

strangers, we managed to find the store--an obvious landmark--and purchased the required exit tokens.

When we arrived at the airport, the first thing we saw just inside the door was a kiosk of the “famous” candy store. We laughed out loud and headed for the plane.

VeeRVeer written by Salman Khan, is a complete entertainment flick. It was a beautiful historical blend of love and war. Salman Khan is creating miracles with his performance and even Mithun Da's acting cannot be left unacknowledged.

They have carried the interest of the viewers in a very tactful way by showing various twists and turns. This Anil Sharma film looked very expensive and royal. This movie will remind you of the old Bollywood films as the story has an old traditional kind of flow.It starts with a war between a tribal community named Pinadari and Mithun and the Madhavgarh people who work for the Britishers. Prithvi (Mithun Chakraborty) from Pinadari community cuts the king of Madhavgarh's (Jackie Shroff) hand during a war for their motherland. The poor Pinadari tribals want to take revenge from Madhavgarh people. Prithvi sends both his sons, Veer and Punya, to London, they can iearn more about the Britishers and their language which will make their work easier. There Veer finds his love Princess Yashodhara (Zarine Khan) and later discovers that she is their rival king of Madhavgarh's daughter. But Veer's father wants him to get her by any means. This was then followed by a big war between the two communities and death of thousands of people.

Relationship shared by Veer and Prithvi was very well presented by Salman Khan and Mithun Chakraborty. Actress Neena Gupta played Veer's mother and Sohail Khan as his brother. Humor created by Sohail is worth mentioning. Though the overstretched climax made the film a little boring, the songs of the film like "Surili Akiyon Wale," "Salaam Aaya," and "Meherbaniyan" overcomes all the negatives. Salman has spent ten years writing this beautiful story.

Walking like Spider-Manmay not be so far off

Spider-Man probably inspired more than a few comics fans to imagine walking on walls. Well, take note, superhero wannabes. Cornell University researchers say they've come up with a palm-size liquid-adhesion device that could enable just that sort of arachno-riffic move.

Similar research into adhesion technology has taken its cue from the gravity-defying gecko, but the Cornell team looked elsewhere--to a beetle native to Florida that can stick to a leaf's surface, through wet adhesion, with a force 100 times its own weight.

All of the built-in apps on iPad were designed from the ground up to take advantage of the large Multi-Touch screen. And they work in any orientation. So you can do things with these apps that you can’t do on any other device.

The large Multi-Touch screen on iPad lets you see web pages as they were meant to be seen — one page at a time. With vibrant color and sharp text. So whether you’re looking at a page in portrait or landscape, you can see everything at a size that’s actually readable. And with iPad, navigating the web has never been easier or more intuitive. Because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger. Scroll through a page just by flicking your finger up or down on the screen. Or pinch to zoom in or out on a photo. There’s also a thumbnail view that shows all your open pages in a grid, to let you quickly move from one page to the next.

See and touch your email in ways you never could before. In landscape, you get a split-screen view showing both an opened email and the messages in your inbox. To see the opened email by itself, turn iPad to portrait, and the email automatically rotates and fills the screen. No matter which orientation you use, you can scroll through your mail, compose a new email using the large, onscreen keyboard, or

PerformanceThe A4 chip inside iPad was custom-designed by Apple engineers to be extremely powerful yet extremely power efficient. The performance is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a touch-based device. Which makes iPad fantastic for everything from productivity apps to games. At the same time, the A4 chip is so power efficient that it helps iPad get up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge. And iPad is available with a choice of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of flash storage, giving you lots of room for your photos, movies, music, apps, and more.

iPad The best way to experience the web, email, photos, and video. Hands down.

delete messages with nothing more than a tap and a flick. If someone emails you a photo, you can see it right in the message. You can also save the photos in an

email directly to the built-in Photos app. And iPad works with all the most popular email providers, including MobileMe, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL.

With its crisp, vibrant display and unique software features, iPad is an extraordinary way to enjoy and share your photos. For example, the Photos app displays the photos in an album as though they were in a stack. Just tap the stack, and the whole album opens up. From there, you can flip through your pictures, zoom in or out, or watch a slideshow. You can even use your iPad as a beautiful digital photo frame while it's docked or charging. And there are lots of ways to import photos: You can sync them from your computer, download them from an email, or import them directly from your camera using the optional Camera Connection Kit.

---A large, high-resolution LED-backlit IPS display. An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. And an

amazingly powerful Apple-designed chip. All in a design that’s thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn’t just the best device of its kind. It’s a whole new kind of device.

Thin and LightOne of the first things you’ll notice about iPad is how thin and light it is. The screen is 9.7 inches measured diagonally. So overall, it’s slightly smaller than a magazine. At just 1.5 pounds and 0.5 inch thin, you can take it anywhere. And a slight curve to the back makes it easy to pick up and comfortable to hold.

iPad will work with almost all of the apps designed for the iPhone. Just download them from App Store. Or, if you already have apps for your iPhone or iPod touch, you can sync them to iPad from your Mac or PC. Then run them in their original size or expand them to fill the screen. And developers are working on new apps designed specifically for this amazing device and all the things it can do.

WirelessWith built-in 802.11n, iPad takes advantage of the fastest Wi-Fi networks. It automatically locates available Wi-Fi networks, which you can join with a few taps. iPad also comes with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, letting you connect to devices like wireless headphones or the Apple Wireless Keyboard.

AccessoriesThere are lots of great accessories specifically designed for iPad. The Keyboard Dock, for instance, combines a dock with a full-size keyboard. There’s also a standalone Dock. And because iPad has built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, it works with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, too. The Camera Connection Kit lets you import photos from a camera or SD card. The iPad Case not only protects your iPad, it also allows you to use it in various positions, making it easier to type, look at photos, or watch movies. You can choose to stuff the pudding with dried fruit, nuts, and coconut, or you can have a simple version with just a slight scattering of fruit and nuts. You could also use 3 cups half-and-half in place of the milk or cream.

Ingredients

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed1/3 cup mixed fruits and nuts (raisins, dried cherries, chopped dried apricots, pistachios, or pine nuts)1 1/2 cups whole milk1 1/2 cups heavy cream1 tsp vanilla extract1/4 cup sugarSlivered almonds for serving

Umm Ali dates back to Ottoman-era Egypt, when legend has it the sultan stopped in a poor village looking for something to eat and the village's best cook, Umm Ali, made something akin to this dish. There are other legends about a British nurse named O'Malley who may have invented the recipe.

History aside, do not be put off by the "bread pudding" label. I almost never like bread pudding since many versions are eggy and rich and about the weight of small livestock. But this is just the opposite-light, fluffy pastry bathed in sweet milk, sprinkled with tangy dried fruits and nuts. Many versions include toasted coconut but I prefer it without.

Directions

Meanwhile, heat milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla in a saucepan until small bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Turn off heat and let sit while you proceed with the next step.

Raise oven heat to 4750F. Grease a baking dish, crumble apart the pastry, and scatter it in the baking dish. Scatter the dried fruit and nuts over the dish. Pour the milk/cream mixture over the dish. Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden on top. Let cool somewhat before serving.

Lightly toast almonds and scatter over top before serving.

360 MALL Concludes Syrian Artist Sara Shamma’s Soloexhibition, “Love 2009 Kuwait”

Kuwait Shell Hosts environmental Awareness Workshopsfor 300 Students at the new english School:

The 3R “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” educational workshop program raised environmental awareness

Kuwait, 30 December 2009: Under the patronage of Mr. Marzouq Al Marzouq, Chairman of Tamdeen Shopping Centers, Syrian artist Sara Shamma’s third solo exhibition, “Love 2009 Kuwait,” hosted by 360 Mall, was recently concluded.

The exhibition showed nineteen large oil paintings on canvas from her latest work.

Sara Shamma said, “It was great to visit Kuwait for the third time and showcase my work to Kuwait’s art appreciating public. My latest collection has been inspired by people that were in a state of comfort, tranquility, peace, happiness, and complete harmony with their surrounding environment, which are the components that make up ‘Love,’ the theme of my exhibition.”

The Syrian artist’s previous exhibitions in Kuwait included “Sara Shamma 2004,” and “Music 2007,” which were successful and gained the admiration of the Kuwaiti public. Sara Shamma has won many accolades as well as international prizes that

Kuwait, 26 January 2010: Kuwait Shell recently held 3R “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” workshops at the New English School (NES). The workshops were delivered over a one-week period, in collaboration with Mad Science, an independent science enrichment provider that delivers hands-on educational science experiences for children. The 3R workshops served as a platform for over 300 elementary students to help them explore the concept of environment and realize that they can make a difference if they implement the 3R principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling a wide range of materials.

Mr. Alastair Hannay, NES’s junior department head teacher, said, “The 3R workshops taught the students the importance of recycling and waste management programs, and allowed them to directly experience how waste affects and pollutes the environment in the long run. This is a wonderful teaching initiative and we can’t thank Kuwait Shell enough for sharing it with us. We incorporate a longstanding focus on the environment as part of the curriculum at NES and this was a new and engaging way of looking at the subject.”

The 3R workshops began with a brief introduction to the oil and gas industry. Hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations illustrated the role students can take in improving not only their school environment, but also the environment in Kuwait.

Kuwait Shell Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Mouti, concluded, “The underlying principles of our 3R ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ workshops are in line with what we are trying to do here in Kuwait--make the best of our natural resources in order to minimize waste and reduce a negative impact on the environment. Each of us has a role and Kuwait Shell is committed to educating as many children as possible about environmental preservation.”

Kuwait City, January 25, 2010: Wataniya Airways, Kuwait’s premium service airline, took Kuwait by storm today with its one-day birthday offer of 11,000 seats at 11 KD return to all its destinations. The public overwhelmingly received the offer, booking thousands of tickets within hours as the company received a huge number of calls and hits on the website from travelers.

“We are humbled by the reception we’ve got from the public, we’ve received a huge amount of phone calls and hits on our website, and people stormed our offices trying to take advantage of the birthday fare,” said Lee Shave, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer. “There are certainly more than 11,000 people who wanted to travel and we regret that we might have disappointed some guests who either didn’t find tickets to their favorite destination or on their desired dates,” noting that

the company allocated 11,000 seats to its eight destinations and some seats on popular routes such as Beirut and Cairo ran out in the first hours of the offer.

“Our offers are not done yet,” said Shave. “We are still celebrating our first year of success and introducing a new offer starting tomorrow with low prices to all of our popular destinations.” The new discounted first year offers start from 17 KD to Dubai and Bahrain, with low prices to exciting destinations such as 30 KD to Damascus, 35 KD to Beirut, 49 KD to Sharm El Sheikh and Amman, and 62 KD to Cairo. CeLeBrITY BIRTHDAYS

Shakira (February 2, 1977)Columbia-born hip-shaking sensation Shakira has many talents, with singing, songwriting, producing, and dancing among them. After achieving success in Latin America at an early age, this unique Aquarius moved on to conquer the American pop scene, too, winning two Grammy Awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards, and was nominated for a Golden Globe. True to her Aquarian humanitarian nature, she founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation that helps fund special schools for poor children in Colombia, which she credits with helping keep her balanced.

Alicia Keys (Jan 25, 1980) Born: January 25, 1980 - New York City, New York, USAAlicia is an inventive Aquarius known for her talented singing and songwriting skills. Raised in the rough Hell's Kitchen area of New York City, Alicia showed an early aptitude for playing the piano and graduated at age 16 as valedictorian from the Professional Performing Arts School. Her debut album sold over 12 million copies worldwide, and she never looked back! Throughout her career, Alicia has won numerous awards and has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, establishing herself as one of the best-selling artists of her time.

oprah Winfrey (Jan 29, 1954)Born: January 29, 1954 - Kosciusko, Mississippi, USAAmbitious Capricorn Oprah was born in Mississippi, but you could say her life really started when she began taping The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1985. Over the years, Oprah has made billions of dollars, and Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century, not only because of her show, but also because of her generous charitable contributions. With her Neptune in Libra, she views marriage as unnecessary, and although long-term beau Stedman Graham has always been by her side, independent Oprah needs very few people in her life to feel fulfilled.

Ashton Kutcher (Feb 7, 1978)Born: February 7, 1978 - Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USAProlific "Twitterer" Ashton started in modeling and easily transitioned into acting, getting the first role he tried out for on That '70s Show. He also created, produced, and hosted the celebrity prank show Punk'd, and also had roles in movies like Dude, Where's My Car?, The Guardian and What Happens in Vegas. Although he's an independent Aquarius with four aspects - including Venus - in this often detached sign, his marriage to older woman Demi Moore seems to be going strong, as does the career that came so easily to him.

Jennifer Aniston (Feb 11, 1969)Born: February 11, 1969 - Sherman Oaks, California, USAJennifer is an independent, offbeat Aquarian who made her mark on the world in the hit series Friends. Friendship was also the keyword in her marriage to Brad Pitt; for an Aquarius, being friends first is important, and these two have done their best to remain friendly, despite their divorce. And although she's very self-sufficient, it would still be nice for her to find her Mr. Right. An Aries or Gemini would be a great fit, but until then, Jen's independent Aquarian nature will allow her to be happy on her own.

February Planet overviewIt's full speed ahead during this short month strewn with days of both challenge and opportunity. Brush aside the residue from the second bout between Saturn and Pluto and the ongoing personal war they are waging, a fight to the finish between tradition and transformation. Help arrives on February 6 when Jupiter sextiles Pluto, bringing new opportunities and creative change to your immediate surroundings. The assertive Mars, though retrograde, continues to flex his muscle by creating delays or a driving-with-the-brakes-on atmosphere. An Aquarian New Moon, with the strong flavor of innovation, holds the promise of relieving an immediate problem. The Full Moon on February 28 ends the month with a house cleaning and anything superfluous, whether in your personal or professional life, gets tossed.

Aries gets the job done with behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in an effort to clean up the residue left from the tug of war between Saturn and Pluto, pitting the old against the new. February 6 could see the beginning of the creative compromise you are looking for. Even though it is retrograde, your ruler Mars is stirring up the Fifth House of the brainchild and you are at the top of your game. The New Moon of February 13 hints that friends or co-workers could be enlisted to help with a much needed revamping of a policy that has outlived its usefulness. The month ends with a Full Moon in Virgo and a Sun/Jupiter conjunction, bringing you the impetus you need to realize what you have believed to be an impossible dream.

The month could begin with heaviness with the traditional Saturn taking up resi-dence in the place of your personal reality and acting as a barrier between you and your dreams. February 6, 7, and 8 are days when it will be easier to chase or rebuild those dreams you thought had been shattered. The New Moon of February 13 is in the house of the creative brainchild, love, and the very necessary play. Valentine's Day lends itself to the spirit of playfulness and on February 16 there could be a reward for your efforts in the form of love or money or both. The Full Moon of Feb-ruary 28 is in Virgo and lurks behind the scenes in the Twelfth House of spirituality, and you are reminded that your spirit or soul also has a need to be nurtured.

At times it may seem the world is moving too quickly for you and you may secretly resent having to make a quick decision that a Saturn-Pluto square could have forced. It won't be until February 6 that you stumble on a brand new way of working with an old problem. Your ruler Venus, as well as the New Moon of February 13, makes those upstairs aware of the contribution you add when it comes to resolving current challenges. In financial or romantic matters, February 16 leaves you glow-ing and possibly receiving an accolade from an unexpected source. The Full Moon of February 28 suggests you release any worry or negativity and for that job well done, you plan an evening of indulging your senses.

The first week of the February your strong emotions are in flux. Saturn in a behind-the-scenes position and at war with your ruler Pluto could reopen old wounds and it isn't until February 5 and 6 when easy aspects bring harmony to whatever stirred that pot. Even though you are technically off the job on February 13 and 14 and you have repaired any damage that your preoccupation with career matters may have created in your romantic life. February 16 you finally begin to breathe easier and find a creative solution to an old dilemma. The Full Moon tangled with the bountiful Jupiter on February 28 allows you to put an old grudge to rest and strengthen bonds long ago severed.

If you feel you are working against time to bring equilibrium into your life, it's justi-fied this month as February 5 could find you balancing Jupiter's desire for expansion in the place of your career against Saturn's day-to-day managing of work duties. This is not the time to engage in seat-of-the-pants negotiations. A well thought-out business plan is the order of the day. The innovative New Moon on February 13, mingling the lucky charm planets Venus and Jupiter, is the day that you are lead in the right direction. February 16 could see you being congratulated for quick think-ing. The Full Moon in Virgo on February 28 is asking that have your details in order before spinning what seems to be a futuristic idea.

Your ruler Jupiter, newly situated in the place you hang your hat, gives you new appreciation for what you have established in business and for your personal life. Still smarting from Pluto's recent bout with Saturn and a growing realization that the days of acting blasé toward your finances may be coming to an end, Jupiter strengthens your strong spiritual confidence. The New Moon on February 13 adds power to a cluster of planets that remind you of what you do best and that is the creation of the "big idea" - and you enthusiastically return to that talent. Venus joins your ruler Jupiter on February 16 and these two lucky charms could see a current idea come to fruition. The Full Moon in detailed Virgo at the end of the month reminds you to keep your paper trail well lit.

February 5 and 6 bring inspiration and are also instrumental days in warding off what could be unexpected calamities. Assets, whether yours personally or those of others, seem to be your first priority this month. The New Moon plays a big role on February 13 when it lands smack into the cluster of protective planets and eases your apprehension about the funds in your trust, and not just your personal trust fund. You are feeling especially fortunate when good news comes your way con-cerning the rewards of your long-range planning. Never one to ignore details, your antenna is up during the Full Moon in Virgo on February 28 and you give your all to your duties - but do leave personal time to feed and generally nurture your soul.

With Pluto fueling your already driven personality, you may still be brushing away residue from the confrontation between this tiny planet of demolition and the con-servative Saturn. What was swept away is gone, but February 6 with Jupiter slipping its power into this feud, you can see a light at the end of the tunnel. The New Moon in Aquarius on February 13 could see a financial reward coming your way for your astute handling of conflict. The trick will be to present a new and innovative idea and not cling to a way of thinking that is no longer valid. The Full Moon in detailed-oriented Virgo on February 28 falls in the place of big ideas and strong confidence and you literally pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Leo needs to balance the world of the personal as well as the world of business. The retrograde Mars inhabits your house of personal reality and opposing a cluster of planets that are literally putting a partner (friend or foe) in the driver's seat. February 5 and 6 could see you beginning to emerge from a web of conflict with little or no effort. The New Moon of February 13 adds fuel to the fire of a partner's aggression. Never one to back down from conflict, you choose your battles carefully and reach a turning point that is favorable to both sides. The Full Moon on February 28 shines its light on your possessions, adding to their worth and you end up the winner in a month of challenges.

The progressive soul of Aquarius takes advantage of the Sun shining on the house of your personal reality and lighting the road ahead. You may have lost your bear-ings somewhat with Pluto wheeling and dealing behind the scenes, but you rebound quickly and recoup losses by February 6 with Jupiter newly located in your house of finances. The New Moon is in your own off-beat sign of Aquarius and surrounded by a well-meaning cluster of planets and February literally belongs to you. Beware that your tendency to quickly forget adversity may lead you to overindulge when you should be diligent. The Full Moon of February 28 is in the hot and heavy house of the resources of other people and you are doubly rewarded when a budding friend-ship develops into a deeper and more meaningful connection.

Partnership matters come to the forefront and there could have been something important swept away in a bout between old and new ways of being in a relation-ship. With the expansive Jupiter and exciting Uranus in the house the partner, the revamping is more than welcome. The New Moon of February 13 in the house of routine could add extra days of romantic activity, or days when your financial status soars. On the heels of this lunation, another day of good fortune - February 16 - could bring those spiritual rewards that are always welcome. The Full Moon on February 28 falls into the sign of Virgo and attracts what you feel may be missing in your life, as well as recognition of your value, and it rewards you for just being who you are.

Saturn and Pluto battling for control could have restricted your discretionary funds, but on February 5 changes occur with little or no effort to ease that temporary glitch. Venus, the planet of both financial benefit and physical attraction, enters your sign on February 11 and eases what could have felt like a financial or romantic downslide. The New Moon intermingling with magical Neptune on February 13 in the behind-the-scenes area of your chart fuels your faith. On February 16, both beneficial Venus and generous Jupiter in the house of your personal reality find you glowing and any recent adversity is quickly forgotten. A Full Moon on February 28 increases your popularity and insures personal and professional recognition for your many talents.
