Relay Review stay well | From kick-off until Relay we have our “Relay Season” and we have officially hit our half-way mark. We are off to a tremendous start to the year but we have a long way to hit our goals. We are all taking time out of our busy lives to fight against a disease that has simply taken too much. Our job is to not only raise money, but to raise awareness in our community about cancer. Wear the title “Relayer” with a badge of honor because you are making a difference in the fight against cancer! Every dollar we raise is changing the scope and dynamic of the battle field. Thank you so much for taking up the fight! We need each and every one of you to win this war! We will not give up, for there is no finish line until we find a cure! ACS CAN stands for American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. · The American Cancer Society is the second largest funder of cancer research. The federal government is #1. · As a Relayer – you work so hard to raise dollars for ACS - don’t you want a voice in how much money the government spends on cancer research? · ACS CAN is your voice to our legislators. We want them to increase cancer research funding! · Relay and ACS CAN - the perfect partnership. By working together, and approaching cancer research from 2 different angles we are giving cancer patients a better chance for a cure! As of this moment, no one relay in Pennsylvania has achieved “We Can Club Event” Status (100 ACS CAN registrations). There is one relay that has 73 ACS CAN Members. But alas, Western Berks is in 2 nd place with only 56. And we all know how Western Berks likes to be in 2 nd place, right?! NOT AT ALL! I know we CAN do this. I know that the Relay For Life of Western Berks is the best. However, in order for us to become a We Can Club Event, we need to have 100 ACS CAN members. I know we CAN do this. Right now we need 44 more memberships. In order to achieve this, we need your help to get the word about ACS CAN to team members, family (aunt, uncle, nieces, nephews) friends, neighbors, co- workers, children, etc. THEREFORE, as of this very moment, we will do what we do best- HAVE A CONTEST! The team captain, who recruits the most ACS CAN membership, will become Mrs. Advocacy, Mr. Advocacy or Miss Advocacy. There will be a special ceremony at Relay you don’t want to miss. For more information on how to join, please email advocacy chair, Debbie Jasinski at [email protected]. BUTTERFLIES FOR HOPE This year we will be selling Butterflies for Hope to be released at the Survivor Ceremony. We would like to have enough butterflies that each Survivor gets one to release during the ceremony. You can purchase a butterfly in honor of a loved one that has survived cancer. This is a beautiful way to honor a loved one at Relay. Survivors are the reason we Relay. There will be three different styles you can choose from, which are a Monarch, a Black Swallowtail, or a Painted Lady. The Monarch and Painted Lady Butterflies are $7 or you can get 2 for $12. The Black Swallowtail Butterflies are $10 a piece or 2 for $18. The order forms are online, or you can contact Mabel at [email protected] for more information or to place your order.

Luminaria Jumps Into March Madness March Madness is back. Last year we lit up the sky and broke all records with Luminaria sales! But of course, we won’t rest there. As you know, monies raised from Luminaria sales will count towards your team's goal. If that's not enough of an incentive; how about a little competition to be the best? What about fabulous prizes for the team with the most Luminaria sold? We'll be announcing the details of our Luminaria Madness competition at our February meeting. But don't wait until then, start selling now! Also new this year is the Reflective Garden Luminaria which will also be included in March Madness competition. All sales will count, so don't wait. If you need luminaria forms, please go to the forms and flyers page of our website: www.relayforlife.org/pawesternberks. Each month, turn in your luminaria and remember to report the number sold to Jay or Fran. Will your team reach the Sweet 16? The Final 4?

A group of Relayers from the Faithful Friends team went to cook and serve dinner for the

residents of the Hope Lodge on January 17th. They also delivered hand-made blankets

donated by their team!

Kelly Killian from team Angie's Kids, store manager of Kay Jewelers #1124, gave the

bears donated by customers to the Hope Lodge.

In this photo (to the right) is Barb from the Williamsport area. Her husband is a patient at

Hershey Medical and they have been guests for over twelve weeks, they started at Hope

Lodge on October 28, 2010. Staying away from home for so long, you can see why the

donations, dinners, and even bears and blankets are a blessing to the guests. Not only does

it make them feel more like they are home, they realize that they have support in many

places and people from all over really do care that they are here.

If you would like information on how your team can help by volunteering time/services or

items for the Hope Lodge, please contact Denise Pasko at [email protected].

It is that time of year already! It is time to start thinking about what your team would like to do at the Hope Carnival! We are proud to host the "2

nd Annual Hope Carnival" as this year's on-site fundraiser.

As always, teams are not required to participate in the on-site fundraiser, but we sure hope you will!

12 Days of Christmas Challenge! The following Western

Berks Relayers accepted the challenge and were invited to

the New Relay Year Ball in January! The challenge

included tasks such as sending fundraising emails, posting

to your Relay page blog, updating your facebook page

with a Relay-related message, selling luminaria, etc. but

the twist was all were ONLINE-based tasks! The challenge

was extended county-wide. Congrats to the winners at

Western Berks!
