Today I am working on the upcoming CJLA Banquet – wrapping up the last minute details and calling the people on my list who have promised to help or donate, or just come and offer their support. By the time you read this magazine, of course, the CJLA Banquet will be a thing of the past (February 18th), but its effects will last for a good while longer. I know for myself, I have been most impressed that each of my calls for help has been answered with a positive response. I am proud to say that the people I know step up to the plate when something needs to be done. Through this magazine, school, family, and the livestock industry, I have a large support system that I can call on. These people I hold dear to my heart because of the caring for each other that is shared. I cannot begin to express in words, my appreciation for what everyone does for me.
Everyone knows the saying, “What goes around, comes around.” I defi-nitely believe this is true. It may take awhile, but how you act, think, or treat someone, will eventually catch up with you in either a positive or negative way. If you always treat someone with respect, encourage-ment, and grace, you will be treated back in the same way. You may not even realize that so many people around you are aware of what you are doing and how you are acting. They are forming an opinion of the type of person you are, just by observing your behavior. Always treat others as you would want to be treated. Even in the showring, be gracious and positive to your fellow exhibitors. You may win today and be happy, but tomorrow you may not. Be the kind of person who will have others want-ing to congratulate you on your wins, or encourage you when you don’t. And don’t forget that the person you are now, the way you treat others now, will affect you further down the road of life. I can honestly say that the reason I have so many who want to help me now is because of how I treated others and cared about each of them from the first time we met.
Today I am excited about the future. Because of the generosity of ev-eryone I contacted, the CJLA Banquet will be a success. We will be able to recognize and reward each member for their accomplishments. It is always a joy to see so many children and their families enjoy the banquet together. The livestock industry and youth raising and showing project animals, is really about family. Family time together – working on a goal, helping a child to learn responsibility and commitment, making and sharing memories. These are special days!
Tougher times seem to be the new normal. It’s something we are all getting used to. I think we are all beginning to realize that if we want to keep certain activities, programs, or whatever, going on and being available, that we all need to put out more effort. So many people are still trying to do for others even though it is costing them more than it did just a few years’ back. As you go through your days, please be sure to say Thank You. Two little words with such a huge impact. The difference between “wanting to” and “giving up”.
Each year gives me something positive to look forward to. (And I don’t mean another birthday!) I come up with ideas for new projects, lists of things I would like to do, and goals I want to achieve. I have some good ones this year and I am getting started right away to get them accom-plished. And I have those great friends and contacts just a call away anytime I need their help, advice, or support. A good kick in the rear, or an “atta-girl Heidi”, will be just what I need somewhere along the road of my life. It’s a great feeling to know they are there – waiting. Who do you have in your corner?
Pacific Showcase is updating too. We are constantly adding to our web-site and posting news on our Facebook page. Be sure to check in often and see what has been added. If there is something you need and we can help, give us a call or send an e-mail. There are many, many services we offer and projects we can get done for you.
As always, please send us your change of address so you don’t miss an issue. Continue to send in photos for the Hot Shots and for our special feature sections. If there is something you would like to see us put in the magazine, I would love to hear your ideas too.
Happy Spring!

We are here to help and to make sure your CJLA experience is a positive one! If you do not have access to email, or are not receiving e-updates from us, let me know so I can correct my contact information to be sure news is getting to you.
We have also just held the 2011 year-end award banquet and will have a complete review of the night’s exciting events in the next issue. I want to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to every sponsor, donor, parent, and friend, for your generous support that allowed us to reach our goals of recognizing and rewarding all of our mem-bers for their accomplishments of the past year. We truly could not have done it without you! And to every CJLA member who stepped up and sold raffle tickets and helped with our fund-raisers, your efforts are much appreciated as well.
To all 2011 members who were not able to attend the Ban-quet: We have your packets and awards ready to be mailed to you! We are asking for a small donation of $5.00 to help pay postage to mail your package. Send postage to CJLA PO BOX 41430 SAN JOSE, CA 95160
One last reminder, if you have not yet joined CJLA for 2012, be sure to get your membership application in before the first show you attend. Points do not accumulate until you have paid your dues. Also provide us with your email address so you can receive e-updates from us. The final date to join for 2012 is March 31st. The 2012 Rule Book, news, and updates, are posted on the website. Be sure to print off copies for your records and future reference. Check out the list of Sanctioned Shows for 2012. There are plenty to choose from as you make your travel plans. As you go to each show, please be sure to thank those who have worked so hard to put on an event for you to participate in. We are all very fortunate that so many wonderful people are willing to put out the time and effort for kids and families who love to raise and show livestock!
important cJLa news
One more reminder - Keep track of your points throughout the year. Call or email me if you have any questions about your points, shows, CJLA rules, etc. I work hard to make sure all points are recorded correctly, but errors do happen so if you aren’t sure if your information is correct, let me know!

Market animal DNA COLLECTION - Process Allows JuniorExhibitors to CollectTheir First Samples
Exhibitors wishing to enter their market animals (including market steers, market sheep, market
hogs and market goats) in the JuniorLivestock show at the 2012 State Fair must first register for the DNA Reservation and Collection
online at www.bigfun.org. The 2012 Market Hog Show is a pedigreed show.
Upon registration, the exhibitor will receive a collection kit to be used for the hair sample
collection process. NO Market Animal will be eligible for official entry unless this sample is obtained and an official Market Registration
Form has been completed. All samples will be collected by the exhibitor and a parent or leader (NO EXCEPTIONS). Your cancelled check and/or postage receipt will serve as your receipt. You will not receive notification from the California State
Fair upon receipt of your sample. PLEASE NOTE: This process does not enter your animal into
the 2012 California State Fair, it is only a part of the necessary requirements you will need for
the market division. All animals are required to be officially entered by the owner, pay the entry fee and do so by the official entry deadline June
8, 2012. Failure to comply with the following deadlines shall result in disqualification for competition in the 2012 California State Fair.

color PatternsSince goats are often unique in their markings, it is helpful and sounds knowledgeable to use their markings when you are talk-ing about them. This would be especially true when giving oral reasons. Except for “Cape” which is a big marking that covers
the neck and onto the shoulder, the other terms are very straight-forward. Just call ‘em as you see ‘em!
For the purpose of illustrating some common markings, and for fun, here is a matching game for you to do. Match the numbered color/markings to the letter on the photos.

Showring trends in different regions dictate that only tradition-ally marked or solid white goats are acceptable; for some reason dark solids and paints are dumped. I prefer to be color blind and choose the animal that combines the best structure, rib shape, muscle and condition. All goats are the same color once you take the hide off, and this is a meat animal. The focus should be on the carcass, not the color of the hair.
To the other extreme, some people breed exclusively for color. The “hot” color right now is spotted goats. Anytime you select for a single characteristic, you give up all the other good things you may have developed in your breeding program.
If you have a question you would like to ask, do not hesitate to send me an email: [email protected]. Or checkout my website: www.whiterailranch.com.

Each year, there are several scholarships sponsored by The Short-horn Foundation as well as the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) available to American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) members. The ASA and the Foundation find offering college sup-port to the youth of the association greatly important as they are the future of the industry and the Shorthorn breed.
AJSA members are eligible to apply for one of six different college scholarships: Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship, John C. “Jack” Ragsdale Scholarship, Don Longley Memorial Scholarships, Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship, Jesse M. & Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship, and new in 2011 is the Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship.
Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship
The $1,000 Dugdale Scholarship is awarded to a collegiate upper-classman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest
in bettering the beef cattle industry after college.
John C. “Jack” Ragsdale Scholarship
The $1,000 Jack Ragsdale Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior or college freshman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest in learning how to evaluate livestock and an ap-preciation for the purebred livestock industry.
Don Longley Memorial Scholarships – applicants may also apply for Lyle & Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship
There are four $1,000 Longley Memorial Scholarships awarded each year. The scholarships are sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college fresh-men based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need, and par-ticipation in other activities.

How do you join?Fi l l out the form and exhibit at as many sanctioned shows that you want to. You can attend one or all the shows - It’s up to you!
Why should you join? You’re attending jackpots throughout the year, so why not accumulate points too? Get recognition at the end of the year for all your work and effort to be your best!
What will you get out of it?Our goal is to reward all kids that join with some form of compensation (by awards, scholar-ships, things for your future - personal & project, etc). At the end of the year, points will be tabulated and a banquet held for members, their families and CJLA supporters. It is our belief that all participants in this program are equally important - therefore, our goal is to include and reward every member for their involvement and efforts.
* You must be a member of the first show you attend to receive
points for that show *
Jr. Memberships are accepted until March 31, 2012.
To receive points you must be a member.

There have been many type changes over the past 75 years in the swine in-
dustry. However, hogs that are healthy, that grow, are sound, that perform
and compete — these have never gone out of style. This is the kind we've strived to produce since 1937 and
through today.
Dad always tells everyone that he got started by a breeder who treated him fair when he started with an FFA
breeding project, and continues to pass that fairness along.
A heartfelt thank you to all our cus-tomers over the years and a welcome,
in advance, to our new customers. Grand Champion market hoG at the 2011 delano harvest Festival — shown by mirza Gavilanes.

Purchases of select Pfizer Animal Health cattle and equine products made between Feb. 1 and April 30 support students
Pfizer Animal Health announces the return of the FFA and American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation Support Pro-gram and the addition of the American Association of Equine Practitio-ners (AAEP) Foundation Support Program. Since its inception in 2008, Pfizer Animal Health and its customers have contributed more than $3.6 million to local FFA chapters and veterinary student scholarship funds.
A portion of purchases from qualified Pfizer Animal Health cattle and equine products made between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2012, will be donated on behalf of local veterinarians and animal health suppliers to the local FFA chapter(s) of their choice, the AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund or the AAEP Foundation.
“Connecting FFA members with their local veterinarians is incredibly valuable in educating them about the animal health industry,” says Lori Randle, regional director, National FFA Foundation. “This program also provides local FFA chapters with funds for traveling to educational and leadership seminars. This has been an excellent program, and we look forward to continuing it.”
In previous years, more than 1,100 veterinarians, animal health suppli-ers and dealers across the country have participated in the FFA/AABP Foundation Support Program, which is part of Pfizer Animal Health’s Commitment to Veterinarians™, an initiative supporting veterinarians through training and education, research and development, and invest-ment in the future of the veterinary profession.
“The AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarships will help ease some of the financial burdens recent gradu-ates take with them into practice,” says M. Gatz Riddell Jr., DVM, executive vice president of AABP. “By targeting students with a proven interest in food animal practice, these scholarships allow more students to enter the field of their choice than ever before. These scholarships should also help address the need for more veterinarians in rural veterinary practice.”
John Mitchell, DVM, AAEP president says the addition of support for the AAEP Foundation will help deliver on the foundation’s core mission of improving opportunities for careers in equine medicine.
“Many new veterinarians face serious financial burdens from years of education,” Dr. Mitchell says. “In fact, this debt may unduly influence where they choose to practice and in what field. Providing scholar-ships to veterinary students helps ensure continued interest in equine veterinary practice.”
Support for the FFA as well as the AABP and AAEP Foundations helps promote the future of agriculture, states Julian Garcia, group director, U.S. Cattle and Equine Marketing, Pfizer Animal Health.
“Our support to all three organizations helps honor the assistance and encouragement many of our team members at Pfizer Animal Health received when they were students,” Garcia says. “Many of us at Pfizer Animal Health have been directly involved with these organizations, and now it’s our chance to work with our veterinary clinic, dealer and distributor partners to give back. In turn, we are supporting the next generation of our industry.”
For more information, or to enroll in the FFA/AABP/AAEP support program, call 866-611-2626, contact your local Pfizer Animal Health representative or visit www.pfizerperformancepays.com.

Mama, the big day finally has come and gone. Farmer Brown took us to a show where we were all hoping to get adopted. We were loaded up in the trailer and made to look our best. I looked just like you in the picture hanging in Farmer Brown’s house; you know the one with the big purple ribbon.
You were right when you said I would feel “bare” after being washed and clipped. I took your advice about staying calm, I couldn’t help but notice some of the others felt embarrassed because of their lack of wool. I held my head high knowing that it was only so that our new human friends could decide who they wanted to take home. My group from Farmer Brown’s farm kept getting compliments, talk about a confidence boost. Some people were asking to feel our loins and the muscle mass on our legs. It was really hard as some of the humans had really cold hands. All day Farmer Brown kept being told how well each of us developed and how big and muscular everyone was. I’ve never seen Farmer Brown so excited.
It was so nice to hear Farmer Brown explain-ing to the young humans how important it is for their animals to have good clean water, plenty of exercise, and shelter from the heat and cold. Farmer Brown was kind enough to answer questions from the young humans and explain why they need to read the labels of the feeds they buy. He told them it’s impor-tant to ensure that Bio-Mos® and Sel-Plex®
are included in the feeds that they purchase. Sel-Plex supports my intake of selenium which helps make sure that my defense system keeps working at its best to keep me healthy and happy. Bio-Mos makes sure that I get plenty of good bacteria and helps me to stay strong and avoid the doctor. I remember you telling me the same thing when I was younger, now I know where you got it.
I overheard Farmer Brown and Farmer Jones talking about the use of Alltech® products in all of Farmer Brown’s feeds, they were discussing the difference it makes in performance and animal health. Farmer Brown also told Farmer Jones he was happy with Sel-Plex this year as the organic selenium supported the concep-tion rates and colostrum quality of his breeders. It really made a big difference.
P.S. All day I had my eye on this cute little girl with a green jacket. She kept saying nice things about me to her daddy and all I wanted them to do was take me home. Well my dreams came true and by the end of the day that little girl with the green jacket took me home. She is so kind Mama, she scratches me behind the ears, kisses my nose and calls me “Lamby Pie”. I think I’m in love!
