From the EditorIt’s a welcome back edition of the Village Voice this month. First we welcome back contributions a sports club, and secondly from the Parish Council and like any good London bus, we wait months for one to turn up and two do! So we have Parish Council 1 and 2 to enjoy, which includes a call to arms.

We are just four months away from Parish Council elections and if you love your village, whichever one you live in and want to see it continue to thrive, then why not consider standing for the Parish Council?

We are all to ready to complain when things don’t happen but how many of us are prepared to step up to the plate and do something about it? Here’s to some healthy and well fought elections in May.

Dear Editor

Two more letters have been received regarding Co-ops decision to start selling newspapers.

Thank you, anonymous writer, for your comments on the latest addition to the

Co-op range, namely newspapers - and I thought it was only me.

We have a newsagent service second to none in this village, at Tideswell Stores. In addition, I can now use the post office counter as an extension of my bank. Those of us who appreciate all Philip and his staff do in that shop, please, keep buying your newspapers there. We can’t do much about passing trade, but as the Customer Service person at Co-op Head Office told me, the Tideswell Co-op is stocked in response to computer-generated stock demand - that’s you and me.

Jean Jackson

I live in Taddington and am partially disabled with rheumatoid arthritis. For that reason, and for the convenience, I do most of my shopping in Tideswell where I can park in the Pot Market and just manage to

walk to the few shops and bank which are there.

Tideswell Stores is one of the most amazing small retailers in the vicinity, offering an extensive rage of services and facilities. If the Stores hasn’t got an item in stock they will do their utmost to help you or get it for you.

We have already lost the daily services of the NatWest bank, and it would be complete travesty if by expanding their business, the Co-op were to affect either Tideswell stores or the other shops in the vicinity.

Whilst the Co-op does provide an additional service in the village, it should not be at the expense of the other small local businesses.

I currently rely on those small businesses and would echo the plea to support them too. Our support is the least they deserve for the personal, professional and varied service they offer to us as customers.

Liz Riley.

Calling all groups 2

There appears to be some confusion over Taste Tideswell’s offer of a

room for the many groups in Tideswell and District. We do have a room and we would love every group to come and spend an evening at the school to discover how you can get the most out of the school and Taste Tideswell, but we do not intend to offer our meeting room as a regular event nor act as

competition to the other public rooms in the village.

I hope that clears that up!

If you’d like to hold a meeting at the school please contact Sheila or Kim on 01298 871262.

Adventure Film Festival

Back again after the hugely successful first event last year, the 2011

HVAFF will be held on Saturday 12th February 2011, at Hope Valley College, so come along to experience the thrill of outdoor adventure through films, activities, lectures, art and photography.

Hope Valley Adventure Film Festival (HVAFF) is an all day package of outdoor adventure and entertainment. The day time schedule runs from 11am to 6pm and includes two ‘Best of ShAFF’ film packages (selected from Sheffield Adventure Film Festival 2010), two youth adventure film programmes, art and photography displays as well as activities including mountain biking, bouldering and a caving challenge open to everyone who attends! This really is a great day out for all ages. Day time tickets are available in advance on-line from 3 specialist Hope Valley outdoor shops, Outside Hathersage, Hitch n Hike Bamford and AdventurQuip Castleton

and cost just £5 for youth and £7.50 for adults, or £22 for a family ticket. Tickets are also available on the door at £5 youth, £9 adult and £25 for a family. Judging by last year’s popularity buy yours early!

The evening entertainment starts from 7pm with a packed schedule that includes an illustrated ‘life and times’ lecture and book signing from the

original ‘rock athlete’ (and Hope valley resident) himself, Ron Fawcett, as well as repeats of a couple of the best films from the daytime schedule. Evening tickets are available both on line and on the door for just £5.

Don’t miss this great event! You will receive a warm welcome and inspiring entertainment, you can eat and drink on

site (we even have our own festival beer) and can enter the much talked about HVAFF raffle with loads of great outdoor related prizes up for grabs.

More details are available on our web site www.hvaff.co.uk including links to the ticket vendors.

Monsal Trail Memories

Do you remember trains running across the Monsal Dale viaduct?

Did you work on the trackbed or at one of the stations at Rowsley, Bakewell, Great Longstone, Hassop or Millers Dale?

If you would like to share your Monsal Trail railway memories then Peak District Interpretation officer Catherine Bowmer wants to hear from you.

Throughout January, Catherine is looking for people willing to share their memories of the old London to Manchester railway line that ran through the Peak District National Park from Rowsley, north of Matlock, through to Millers Dale with a branch line to Buxton.

Catherine said: “I’m hoping to capture people’s experiences of living beside, working on and travelling by the old railway line. I’m particularly looking for people who are happy to have their memories recorded to tell the story of this historic trail and recreate the

atmosphere of the working railway line.”

Perhaps you lived next to the railway and remember it being used to transport milk from Peak District farms to London? Or did you work at the Chee Dale lime kilns which closed in 1944? Maybe you travelled to work or school on the old Midland Railway Line?

Catherine explained: “The line closed in 1968 so people have worked on it, travelled on it and lived by it within living memory. We want to record these memories to create an audio history that will be available at three listening

posts on the Monsal Trail as well as through podcasts and the internet.”

If you would like to talk to Catherine you can contact her on 01629 816203 (Monday - Wednesday only) or email [email protected]

The work is part of the Pedal Peak District project that is reopening four tunnels along the Monsal Trail to create a new cycle route between Bakewell and Buxton.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Litton Mill student Rebecca Wylie is busy planning her next fund-raising event in

her bid to raise more than £2400. Her aim is to climb Kilimanjaro with a group from her university for the charity Childreach International.

The charity works in partnership with the local communities of seven developing countries, working to improve the lives of children in various ways. The charity implements a variety of programmes including vocational training, carbon offsetting and improving schools. Here are a few facts and figures from the charity:

· £7 provides a child with access to a team of health professionals in remote rural Nepal

· £90 provides enough rice to feed a school for three months

· £350 provides the salary of a part time Maths or English teacher in Tanzania for 1 year

Rebecca will be heading out to Africa on the 1st of September next year, and whilst there she will be visiting Childreach

International projects in Tanzania.

Her fund-raising page is: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Becca-is-climbing-4-kids, where donations can be left. She’s also planning a series of events throughout the year including a wine-tasting evening at a date to be announced.

Cold Call Warning

Trading Standards are warning residents about a scam that may be operating

across Derbyshire.

A company is cold calling offering a free prize draw to win a car in exchange for a name, address and telephone details. The company then ring the householder to arrange a sales visit trying to sell high value carpet cleaners. The sales visit may take some time and the householder may feel pressured into buying the cleaner.

Reputable companies do not usually act in this way. If you are in any doubt then call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or the police.

The return of the ring

In the January edition we appealed for anyone who had found a ring in the road

in Town Head to hand it in.

The owner of the ring has asked us to announce that the ring did in fact eventually turn up – but thanks to anyone who made the effort to look.

On the Beat

The Tideswell and Area Villages Community Forum was recently

held at the Methodist Church, Great Longstone. It was a cold winter’s night with driving rain and wind but there was a good turnout.

PC Kevin Lowe gave the meeting updates on calls made to the police, incidents of nuisance & disorder and crimes dating back from the last meeting which was on 20th September 2010.

In addition three issues were raised from Chief Superintendent Lewis’s e-forum which can only be accessed if you’re registered with ring master.

Further updates where given to the meeting on the last priority profile which related to the use of mobile phones whilst driving.

The meeting was informed of the current on going force wide Operation Impact which targets violent crimes relating to alcohol and licensed premises. All public house licensee’s have been visited and the successful “Tideswell, Litton & Millers Dale” Pub Watch has supported this Operation and its success is likely to attract the inclusion of other licensees in the very near future who have shown interest in the scheme.

A Community Speed watch will be developed in the village of Litton Village

and any villagers who are interested should approach PCSO Phil Briggs.

PC Lowe will develop, coordinate and manage the extension of the Pub watch to include the remaining Licensee’s of public houses on the Tideswell safer neighbourhood area.

Questions where raised in respect of Operation Blackbrook, they were answered at the meeting and that operation will continue.

The meeting supported the development of the Pub Watch and the Litton Community Speed watch and did not have any concerns which would attract a priority profile or issue.

The date of the next meeting was set for 7pm Monday 11th April 2011 at Cressbrook club.

Parish Councl Matters

The Tideswell Parish Council will resume sending articles to the

Village Voice. Today’s notes serve as an introduction.

In this country we are governed by several tiers of government. The European parliament, the House of Lords, House of Commons, County Councils, Unitary Authorities, District or Borough Councils. All members of these bodies receive salaries, allowance and or expenses.

At the most personal and local level parish and town councils represent their local communities. All Parish Councillors do this work as unpaid volunteers. Traditionally parish councils are led by a chairman and town councils a mayor.

The only statutory paid officers are the parish clerk and the responsible financial officer. Other people may be employed in other capacities. Many parish councils are elected on party political grounds, but here in Tideswell, the councillors and candidates have always agreed not to involve party politics but to fight the election on local issues and to work as a team when elected.

Next Election date

The next election will take place on Thursday 5th May and it is important that local people who care about Tideswell put themselves forward for nomination. Currently the is one vacancy on the council. This has been allowed to remain vacant as the timing is so close to the election. The returning office and their team at Derbyshire Dales district Council are responsible for election issues.

The Parish Council make decisions about local issues and represent Tideswell on various bodies such as Charitable trusts. Comments from the council are valued by the Peak Park Planning Authority and the Derbyshire Dales District Council work in partnership on local issues.

The Parish Council cannot give copies of minutes of meetings until they have been verified at a subsequent meeting, but notes will be sent to the Village Voice in future on a regular basis. We will keep you informed of matters of interest and importance

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

Water Mills in the Wye

On January 13th Dr Alan Roberts gave Tideswell Local History Club

a tour of the mills on our River Wye.

It appears that there have been more than five mills on the short stretch of 20 miles from Buxton to Rowsley. Two of these, Ashford and Bakewell Mills were already operating in 1086 according to Domesday. Even though the land and the climate were poor the Manorial System called upon each parish to produce grain which then had to be ground in the Lord’s Mill.

In Buxton, one mill stood where Ashwood Park is now; the weir is still there. In the 13th century this was the scene of much vandalism and machine wrecking between rival mill owners. Still in Ashwood Dale - the now ruined Devonshire Arms, on the A6 was once both an inn and a mill and was still working in 1901.

Further downstream Blackwell Mill, which dates back to around 1400,

was demolished when the railway was brought through the dale.

One of our members, Mrs Verna Richmond, recalled carting oats with her father - Mr Goodwin from their farm at Wheston, to be ground at Tideswell Mill (now demolished) in Millers Dale. Verna said it was known as the Meal Mill because it ground

mostly oats both as fodder for horses and for porridge and oatcakes. This mill is supposed to date back to the time of the monks of Lenton Priory. The other mill further upstream which recently was the home of Craft Supplies was known as the Corn Mill because it ground mostly wheat.

Next we come to the first of the big cotton enterprises. Between them Litton, Cressbrook and Lumford Mills eventually employed around 1000 people and for power they exploited the very reliable surge of water streaming down the hills around Buxton. Sadly, as we know, Litton Mill made it into the history books for the wrong reasons the

Page 17: Febuary 2011

Village Voice17

near enslavement of scores of young pauper apprentices. Ellis Needham, the cruel owner even sited their living accommodation on the far side of the River Wye in a different parish so that when a child died there would be a charge on Taddington parish.

There is still a lot of machinery left in Ashford Mill and the present owner is hoping to generate electricity for the national grid using the restored turbine. On the site of the marble Mill at Ashford stood a Comb Mill which made hair combs from tortoise shells whilst further upstream stand two small buildings which were mills for making bobbins for the textile industry.

Another superbly informative talk from Dr Roberts - our next meeting will be on the 10th February when Alistair Boyd will talk about the history of Castleton Hall - everyone welcome.

Parish Council Matters 2

The Tideswell Parish Council has met with Peak Park officials to

discuss the state of the ‘Lightning Tree’. Although a site meeting was held almost three months ago no decision has been given to the Parish Council yet. Members were concerned that the tree may be dangerous.

We agreed that it will be pollarded, or cut down, but we wanted to do something appropriate with it as it is a

Tideswell feature. Suggestions included making it into a seat or a piece of the wood turned into a commemorative decoration.

Remembrance Day

At the Remembrance Service in November only a small number of Councillors took a visible role and joined in the parade. The wreath was laid and a speech of commitment made by Vice Chairman Paul Flint. Other members, including the chairman, Phillip Swarbrick, were on marshalling duty. Their role was vital to the service although not as obvious.

Local Award Scheme

The Parish Council is pleased to take up the suggestion of a Local Award Scheme. Watch out for details in the Village Voice.

The new machine for pavement sweeping has already done some useful snow clearing work and will be used throughout Tideswell for cleaning the pavements of litter and leaves.

Over the past few months the council has written to protest against the NatWest Bank’s decision to open only two days per week.

At t’Flicks

This month’s film being shown by Tideswell Cinema, on Thursday

24th, is the 2009 Oscar nominated “Coco before Chanel”. Starring Audrey Tautou, it is the story of Coco Chanel’s rise from obscure beginnings to the heights of the fashion world. Following an inauspicious early life in an orphanage, she becomes a seamstress and singer in a provincial bar. Her love life opens doors, and she is able to develop her gifts for making increasingly popular hats. Falling in love with an English businessman brings new opportunities, but her life becomes ever more complicated. A fascinating portrayal of this astonishing woman.

As usual, the evening is open to Guest Members, for £4.50. The film will be shown at 7.30pm on the 24th, upstairs in The George, using the new projecting equipment bought as a result of the wonderful fundraising evening on 29th January, when we were able to enjoy both “Julie and Julia” and a superb meal at Tideswell’s brand new School of Food.

Holiday with a difference? From building a coracle or a picnic bench to harvesting apples and making cider, the new National Trust working holiday brochure offers over 400 holidays that provide the opportunity

to get fit, have fun and play a part in conserving the nation’s heritage.

With prices starting from just £55, there are weekend short breaks or week long holidays with plenty to tempt all age groups and backgrounds; from path repairs and wild camping in Cumbria to ornamental gardening at Hughenden, photography and tree planting in Snowdonia to learning rural crafts on The Lizard in Cornwall.

Special interest holidays continue with focuses on seasonal food, photography and ‘active’ holidays include surfing, mountain biking and sailing.

The John Muir discovery award holidays also continue, giving people the chance to go on guided landscape adventures that help them understand the landscape. The Youth Discovery holidays also offer great experiences, for those from 16 to 18, and a way to gain the Duke of Edinburgh’s gold award.

Accommodation for all holidays is in one of the National Trust bunkhouses, unless it’s a camping orientated holiday. All holiday goers chip in with cooking and cleaning; and armed with a copy of our basecamp cookbook, it’s easy to cook up a storm using locally sourced, seasonal food to create tasty group meals for all to share.

For more information call 0844 800 3099 or log on to the website: www.nationaltrust.org.

Drink DrivingThe annual police campaign ran between Thursday, December 1 and Saturday, December 31, during which time officers conducted breath tests on drivers across the county.

Officers administered 656 breath tests and of those,115 people (17.5 per cent) gave a positive test, the driver refused to take the test or the driver failed to provide a sample.

During the 2009 campaign, officers conducted 1,011 breath tests and of those, 121 people (or 11 per cent) gave a positive test, the driver refused to take the test or the driver failed to provide a sample.

The campaign was ‘intelligence-led’, allowing the police to target drivers who persistently drink-drive rather than conducting mass-testing.

Bowled Over

Welcome every body to Tideswell Bowling Club’s fun Village Voice page; it used to

be called ‘On The Green’ which, dear readers & potential bowlers, we want you to do. Please relax because there’s fun without pain ha ha.

Let me try to explain:

We have an excellent bowling green (expertly looked after, nurtured with dedication by David Bradwell, more of him & about his Dad & son later) which we want you enjoy with flat soled shoes or naked feet – do not worry, the rest of your clothes are ok. Which leads me seamlessly to our treasurer, Barry Landon, who will sort you out with, should you choose to join, a wonderful selection of sweatshirts & pullovers with the club’s logo. However, please relax, we do bowling but not sartorial elegance.

We have a really good pavilion where you can relax at your leisure whilst watching people scratching there heads wondering how it all went wrong & how soon they can get back to the luxurious pavilion with you lot having cups of tea, coffee, biscuits, cake & perhaps something slightly more fortifying?

Enough of this frivolity we do bowling at various levels;-

- Friday night, in summer, from 6pm we turn up & bowl and pavilion activities;

- we have friendly bowling matches run by the brilliant organiser Andrew Turner, we go to posh places as far away as Sheffield – but he’s organising a charabanc trip to Garstang (where’s Garstang you ask? – so do I; Google Earth will take you to strange places yet to be discovered by Andrews)

- on Thursday afternoons there’s the Veterans League for young people over the age of 50;

- inspired by Andrew T (too many mentions- with many relatives in the know Universe) we have the Tideswell Pub Bowling League.

This is FUN because it involves bowling & surprise, surprise pubs – The Horse & Jockey, The Anglers Rest, The Star Inn &, with a special mention, The George Hotel who generously hosted the presentation night just recently that was good fun.

- we also do short mat indoor bowling at Bishop Pursglove school on Fridays at 6.30 in winter; yet again turn up please.

- a new one is carpet bowling upstairs at The George on some Tuesdays; we don’t pay rent directly … only over the bar!

- we are joining a Tuesday night mixed pairs league which is a little bit more competitive, but not as competitive as – roll of drums drrm, drrm

- BLOOD ON THE GREEN on Monday nights brutally, sorry I meant enthusiastically, run by the aforementioned D Bradwell backed up by the other two generations of Tidza bowlers Roy & Matt (a junior county player now at university, probably doing sex drugs & rock’n’roll but maybe just bowling?)

- also in Winter on Tuesday afternoons there’s a social gathering to play games that don’t involve bowling to which you’re welcome.

We have some wonderful, if not bizarre, events that don’t always involve bowling, pie & pea supper with a film is just one. More about ‘Rock ‘n’ Bowls in Wakes Week & the rascally Wain & Wrighty in another edition.

If you’re interested, or have some whacky bowling ideas, please contact our illustrious club President Alan Thornton (01298 872301) or our very elegant secretary Fil Radford (01298 872301).

Best wishes everybody,

Griff. ( I’m happy to accept folding drinking vouchers ( for the club Barry) to either include or exclude your names).
