New Operating System
• RHEL 5.4–Faster (supports 64-bit processing)
–No longer necessary to periodically reboot the workstations
–TFMS application (TSD, NTML, FSM, etc.) functions remain unchanged
–Slight differences in window and desktop menu appearance
–New Firefox browser
Technology Refresh Orientation Briefing for Technical Operations (TO) and System Administrators (SA) 18
Tech Refresh Enhancements
• To relieve site personnel of repetitious system or troubleshooting activities, many support functions are now automated or performed by the SMCOs at the TFMS Consolidated Service Desk:– Included are all SUP mode script functions and anything requiring
“Root” password
–Onsite SA and TO staff may be asked by the SMCOs to assist with activities such as fileserver swaps, HW/SW diagnostics, workstation reboots, etc
–Hewlett Packard Open View Operations (HP OVO) agents will be installed on the new workstations and fileservers. OVO provides automated monitoring and will deliver 24x7 equipment status information to the SMCOs
Technology Refresh Orientation Briefing for Technical Operations (TO) and System Administrators (SA) 19
Tech Refresh Enhancements (cont.)
• To enhance system security, the new equipment does not support removable media such as CDs, DVDs, or thumb drives. A new FTP process will be covered later
• To provide system stability, a Redundant Array of Independent Discs (RAID) has been installed on all servers and workstations–One drive will function as the primary
–The secondary drive will be updated regularly to mirror the primary drive
– If the primary drive fails, the secondary drive automatically takes over the primary function
–The SMCOs will be alerted by the OVO agent and will contact HP for a replacement drive

The TFMS FTP Process
• The procedure meets all FAA TFMS security requirements and policies
• The FTP process transfers files from the TFMS network to the Administrative / Mission Support network
• Secured TFMS Web Portal servers connect to FTP servers at the TFMS Consolidated Service Desk
Technology Refresh Orientation Briefing for Technical Operations (TO) and System Administrators (SA) 35
The TFMS FTP Process (cont.)
• A Linux script is used to perform the transfer from the local TFMS workstation to the TFMS Web Portal (FTP Server)
• The user runs the script and identifies a file(s) to be transferred
• The script executes a background transfer of the file(s) to the Service Desk where the files are stored on the TFMS Web Portal server
• The TFMS Web Portal server can be accessed from FAA administrative workstations
Technology Refresh Orientation Briefing for Technical Operations (TO) and System Administrators (SA) 36
The TFMS FTP Process (cont.)
• Each site has a folder on the TFMS Web Portal for storing the files uploaded from the TFMS network
• Authorized users to the website can download files to an admin workstation
• A quota of 5 gigabytes per site is the current limit
• Uploaded files are retained for 60 days before they are automatically removed
Technology Refresh Orientation Briefing for Technical Operations (TO) and System Administrators (SA) 37
TFMS Web Portal Server
• File size can not exceed 5 megabytes. The TFMS Consolidated Service Desk can assist with transfer of a larger file
