Letter from CHAP Commisioner, Cindy ConklinNeighbors, On behalf of the CHAP Commissioners, I am hoping that some of our Federal Hill neighbors will come on Wednesday, November 9th at 3 p.m. (day after Election Day) to listen to testimony - both pro and con - about Federal Hill becoming a CHAP neighborhood. If you are coming to the hearing it is on the 8th Floor of 417 E. Fayette Street. You will need ID to get into the building - and all comments are limited to three minutes. Often neighbors attend the Hearing but do not testify.

The survey results showed that the majority (55%) of property owners that voted were in favor of CHAP. Specifically:For 93Against 77Total 170 Note that this is the first of two CHAP hearings about proposed local district designation. As part of the process, the City Planning Commission and City Council will hold hearings as well. If all of the hearings and votes are positive, then the process could be completed by Spring 2017. If you can’t make it on the 9th, or if you have specific questions regarding CHAP or this process, then please feel free to write a letter or send an email to Eric Holcomb, the Executive Director of CHAP at [email protected], copying Walter Gallas, CHAP planner ([email protected]). They are eager to know your opinion about Federal Hill becoming a CHAP neighborhood, pro or con. The Commissioners are also eager to hear your input. The CHAP website is http://chap.baltimorecity.gov/.

Regards,Cindy Conklin, CHAP Commissioner

By choosing local and independent businesses for your services, shopping, dining and other needs, you not only enjoy a more distinctive and personal experience, you’re helping:

1. BUILD COMMUNITY! The casual encounters you enjoy at neighborhood-scale businesses and the public spaces around them build relationships and community cohesiveness. They’re the ultimate social networking sites!

2. STRENGTHEN YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY! Each dollar you spend at independent businesses returns 3 times more money to your local economy than one spent at a chain (almost 50 times more than buying from an online mega-retailer) — a benefit we all can bank on.

3. SHAPE OUR CHARACTER! Independent businesses help give your community its distinct personality.

4. YOU CAN BUY IT WHERE YOU TRY IT! Local stores enable you to try on and try out items before you buy—and get real expertise—saving you time and money.

5. CREATE A HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT! Independent, community-serving businesses are people-sized. They typically consume less land, carry more locally-made products, locate closer to residents, and create less traffic and air pollution.

6. GET REAL VALUE FOR YOURSELF! Reader surveys by the Consumers Union repeatedly show independent businesses beat their chain competitors in overall customer satisfaction (and often save you money).

7. ENHANCE CHOICES! A wide variety of independent businesses, each serving their customers’ tastes, creates greater overall choice for all of us.

8. INCREASE WEALTH OF RESIDENTS! The multiplier effect created by spending locally generates lasting impact on the prosperity of local organizations and residents.

9. CREATE JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES! Not only do independent businesses employ more people directly per dollar of revenue, they also are the customers of local printers, accountants, wholesalers, farms, attorneys, etc., expanding opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

10. GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY! Small businesses donate more than twice as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events, and teams compared to big businesses.

11. ENHANCE HEALTH OF RESIDENTS! Research shows a strong correlation between the percentage of small locally-owned firms and various indicators of personal and community health and vitality.

By Bob Moll

The good news is that I have not been fired. The bad news is that I am not sure of what to do for this month’s article. I’ve decided to progress with my idea for an “Architectural tour of Federal Hill”, from the point of view of an architect who considers himself to not be a “pompous ass”, and therefore is rather open and inquisitive about the merit and/or lack thereof (though, everything has merit, even if only in the mind of its own developer, or something like that), of various architectural elements on “The Hill”.

Everything that my feeble mind will suggest for “the tour” will be my opinion only. Any architect, or student of the profession, or other interested individual, is welcome to disagree, though this endeavor is only for entertaiment, fun, and possibly a pleasant walk for us all.

Okay, here we go! I have engendered a few categories, in which to divide the tour. The categories are simple, and possibly frivolous, but are, as author of this article, my own to choose.

1. A FITTING PIECE OF THE FABRIC OF FEDERAL HILL, or on the other end, A SQUARE PEG IN A ROUND HOLE. This is a wide category, which may include every sort of building; old, new, residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, or even an open space or garden. This category may likely include entire blocks of rowhouses or storefronts.

2. OLD AND COOL

3. NEW AND COOL

4. REPURPOSED BUILDINGS Simply a building, usually of the older type, which has been given a new lease on life, by having its original use transformed to another.

5. EXEMPLARY -NEW OR OLD-

6. SIMPLY COOL FOR WHATEVER REASON

ARCHITECTURE ON THE HILL

If my admission to being an outsider was not enough to end my presence in The Hillsider, then hopefully this dangerous endeavor will also meet with a modicum of approval, or not. This is for fun, and is only my opinion. Possibly some readers will respond with elements deserving inclusion or differing opinions on the choices.

I’ve included my map again, it seems to be reasonably accurate, or not. Anyway, since the boundaries seem to be rather arbitrary, I will reserve the right to “stray beyond” (sounds like the Twilight Zone or something), at my discretion. This adventure is likely to take up a bit of time. I may fill in with other topics until I have something to show for my efforts. Thanks, as always, Bob Moll and send your “tour” submission to me @ [email protected].

Jeff and Sarah Rothschild live in Federal Hill with their two kids. They met in 2007 when Jeff needed a new walker for his Federal Hill-based dog walking business, Luv My Pet, and hired Sarah. They were both coming out of relationships. At the time, Sarah was in graduate school at Towson University for professional writing.

Sarah, who focuses on comedy screenwriting, found a lot of natural comedy in dog walking and all the crazy things that can happen on the job. She would keep a notebook with her and jot down all the funny circumstances she encountered.

By 2010, her and Jeff were in a relationship and she completed her first screenplay Dog Walker, a romantic comedy based “very loosely” on their lives according to Sarah. She submitted the script in the Academy Nicholl screenwriting competition and made it to the final 200 out of thousands of submissions. This led to her signing with Verve Talent and Literary Agency.

Dog Walker was purchased in 2012 by ABC Family for a television movie, but when the option ran out to produce the movie, it was returned to Sarah. The script however was recently purchased by Clint Eastwood’s daughter Allison Eastwood, who will be producing an independent film alongside Stefanie Epstein. The two are currently fundraising and filming is expected to begin next year in Atlanta.

“I’m super excited,” Sarah told SouthBMore.com[SouthBMore.com]. “It’s been in the works for a long time, and Hollywood can move at a slow pace, but I’m really happy it is moving forward with Allison.”

While she won’t be directly involved with production, Sarah is hoping to watch some of the filming and noted that she can’t wait to see her script come to life on the big screen.

Though the film will be shot in Atlanta, Sarah told

SouthBMore.com[SouthBMore.com] that there will be some references to Baltimore that locals will probably pick up on.

Sarah, now a full-time writer, has written many scripts. She hopes to sell more of them and see more in production as she gains more experience and notoriety in the film industry.

Since completing Dog Walker, Sarah has been hired by Disney and Universal, and sold a couple other scripts in between. She also has some current projects in motion that she can’t talk about quite yet. While continuing to live in Baltimore, Sarah often has calls and pitches with companies in Los Angeles and has visited the West Coast city several times this year.

Sarah has retired from dog walking, but Jeff and Luv My Pet’s 13 team members keep busy walking 140 dogs a day around Baltimore.

On September 17, South Harbor Renaissance (SHR) welcomed the help of an enthusiastic team from the Ritz Residences staff who freshened the paint throughout Federal Hill Park, under the supervision of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore (WPB).

SHR pays the WPB over $50,000 a year to landscape and clean the Park under WPB’s contract with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks. SHR raises private funds through donations and sales of custom engraved pavers, installed in the path through the playground.

If you love Federal Park and think it looks better than ever, please support this effort at SHR’s website www.south-harbor.org.

Mayor’s Fall CleanupBy Walt Saxon

We managed to fill our assigned city (free!) dumpster on October 22 during the city wide cleanup. Many, many thanks to Tony Ranieri and Charles Thomas for making sure the dumpster was safely loaded with allowable trash and debris. Also, thanks to Beth Whitmer for arranging with Eric Costello for a late afternoon pickup, and to all neighborhood members who pitched in. Finally, many thanks to Mike Dickensheets, Eric Costello and Baltimore Recreation and Parks for a superb job of cleaning out the extraneous vegetation around the entire exterior perimeter of Robert Baker Park. It looks fantastic! Don’t forget to shut off your outside water spigots; winter is coming soon!

Hi there! My name is Madeline. I’m a 2 ½ year old, 35 lb boxer mix with lots of puppy energy. My foster mom says I’m the hap-happiest pup around! Tug is my number one favorite activity and I’m super good at it. I also love to hike and run, whatever activity you want to do, even snuggle on the couch - I just want to be near you. I’m super friendly and tail-waggy with all people. I’m also easily excited and may knock over small children with my wiggly butt, so I’d do best in a home with kids over 10.

I’ve taken several training classes, including a Canine Good Citizen prep course and an Intensive Obedience course. So far, I‘ve learned sit, down, stay, wait, off, and out. My leash manners are already good, but I’d love for you to continue working with me on them so I can be even better.

Hello! My name is Madeline, but you could also call me a snuggle bug because I think snuggles are the best thing in the world! In fact, I am looking for a wonderful friend or family to snuggle with in a loving forever home.

When I was very young I got myself in a tight situation and was injured for a while. I didn’t have a family of my own to help me through it, but some very special people at AARF took me in. Thanks to my foster mommy’s dedication, I am a happy, healthy kitty with an extremely affectionate personality. I am becoming a great housecat. I absolutely adore humans, I tend to get along well with other cats once I get to know them, I enjoy playing with toys, I follow the rules of proper bathroom etiquette, and I love to be held. My foster mommy says I am a gourmet biscuit maker, too! So, if you have a lap, or shoulder, that I could curl up on and you are ready to accept a new family member, please contact AARF today for a playdate with me.

If you›d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this site - http://www.animalalliesrescue.org/adoption-application and choose me - Madeline! Proper nutrition and lifestyle practices are at the foundation of good health. Everyone “knows they should eat better” but what does that mean? To oversimplify it: a proper diet is one that provides the right ingredients in the right portions to support your goals. Now, while that’s a completely generalized statement, the simple fact is that most people aren’t even in control of the ingredients or portions in the first place. The reason? We let other people cook our food.

Of course, letting others cook for us has some benefits, mainly time, and taste. The cost of cooking your own food is the time it takes, and it’s a big reason that most people don’t cook for themselves. No doubt your time is precious. You’re already trying to balance work, school, and maybe children, to say nothing of carving out a little free time for yourself. If cooking something every time you want to eat isn’t feasible, what’s the solution? Well it’s to have your meal and eat it too, and by that I mean: leftovers.

When it comes to leftovers, the main issue is going to be your protein source. The protein is the thing that requires cooking, and forms the base of any balanced meal. Fruits, veggies, and fats are definitely essential to have in your diet, but they’re also relatively easy, and often need no heating or prep work at all. So for today we’ll be focusing on strategies to have meat at the ready.

3 Keys to SuccessThere are three main qualities that are key to having great protein leftovers:

1. Insensitive to level of “doneness”2. “Scalability”3. Infinitely separable

This is not to say that you can’t have good leftovers without one or more of these qualities but these three will set you up for success. Here’s how:

Insensitive to Level of DonenessThis may seem obvious, but you want to have leftovers that you actually want to eat. Certain cuts of meat require a particular level of doneness to be edible, and that makes them difficult to reheat later on. There’s nothing like staring at a hunk of shoe leather on your plate to send you to the nearest vending machine! Because of this, some steaks, cuts of lamb, and many cuts of fish probably aren’t the best choice. Instead, choose meats that taste good fully cooked, such as ground beef (like in chili), and you’ll find your leftovers are as good or better reheated.

ScalabilityChoosing proteins that can be doubled in volume without doubling the prep time is a great way to make leftovers. For instance, those blue cheese stuffed burgers might be delicious, but making twice as many is going to take you twice as long, so they probably shouldn’t be in the regular rotation. And don’t get me wrong, I’m all for something “bacon wrapped”...as long as someone else is doing it. Conversely, cooking 4lbs of chili doesn’t take all that much more time than cooking 2lbs, so it’s a very good choice. And yes, hopefully I’ve subliminally made you hungry for chili by now.

Infinitely SeparableThis is probably the least obvious of the bunch, but I like to have leftovers that are infinitely separable. Leftovers such as pulled pork, chili, curry, and stir fry can all be separated into portions of any size. Having infinitely separable leftovers allows you to avoid having that awkward quarter of a chicken breast that hangs around in the refrigerator waiting to get thrown away. Contrary to how it may seem, making your own food can be as cost effective as prepared foods, but only if you actually eat it all. Infinitely separable leftovers ensure that you’re able to portion things out with as little waste as possible.

Following these three rules will allow you to have home-cooked meals at the ready, making “emergency carry-out” a thing of the past. I’m sure you noticed, though, that there wasn’t any info on which ingredients you should use in which portions. We feel this is highly dependent on each person’s needs, and that’s why each of our clients gets customized lifestyle guidance, along with their fitness program. So, if you feel like you could use some coaching on your health and lifestyle, or feel “lost” in the gym, contact the coaches at SBSC today!

THE ART OF GIFTING MEANINGFUL GIFTS By Carla Bravo Wing, Phina’s Fine Linens & Giftswww.phinas.com

The season of gift giving is upon us. For some it is a joyful time & experience. For others, the joy is mixed with budget angst or anxi-ety over selecting the right gift.

We have a variety of questions when deciding what to get and for whom.

Is there such a thing as gift giving etiquette? To whom are you obligated at Christmas and the Holiday Season?

For many the first step to shopping for the holidays is wandering around the malls during the maddening sales to find that perfect gift, which can be very frustrating. Was it always this difficult?

Holidays are truly perfect for children, no money necessary; all they have to do is create a gift from the heart and it becomes a cherished present to anyone who is honored to receive it. (Scrap B-More a perfect place for kids to get in the spirit. [email protected])

According to Stuart E. Johnson, author of “The Art of Giving”, homemade gifts are most appropriate for Christmas gifts. Do you have time to create a gift? Use your talents. Ifyou love to bake- make cookies.

Something as simple as a cultural gift (for example, a cake) can become a treasure to receive.

Each year as a teenager, we would look forward to Wendy & Gail’s grandmother from Barbados cutting us s little pieces of her many “Fruit Cakes” that were wrapped in rumsoaked cloths in cookie tins. Some cakes were aged for a few months, others for many years, (so we were told) and that became the legend of these extraordinary “Fruit Cakes”; a gift we all remembered for a lifetime.

Gifting is more than just the exchange of objects. It is a way to com-municate a message to the person you want to make smile. When you put some thought into it and choose a meaningful present, the gift takes on new meaning to the person receiving it.

In my search for meaningful gifts, I came across some wonderful tips on The Art Of Gift Giving. These 8 tips are a good start for your holiday shopping season.

1. Give by Observing - The number one rule of meaningful gift-giving is observation. If you pay attention to what would make the person’s life easier, what they need re-placed or something they speak of often, you can almost al-ways pick the perfect gift. Your college buddy just moved into a new apartment and she could use a few well-chosen décor accessories. (Punch Boutique is a good local place to search for that special item. www.punchboutique.com)

2. Give by Personality - Consider who you are giving to and

match the gift to their unique personality, which makes the statement that you care about them. Your Travelista friend has been looking for special pouches to organize and pack small things. (Brightside Boutique has a section dedicat-ed to just that. www.shopbrightside.com)

3. Give by Niche Interest - Your super-mom friend loves to entertain at home. Special serving trays and wine glasses with a special message would be perfect. (Pandora’s Bou-tique would be right up your alley. /www.facebook.com/shoppandorasboxboutiqu)

4. Give by Hobby - Friends’ and relatives’ hobbies can steer you in the right direction. Your godmother has a passion for knitting or crocheting and expressed an interest in classes. (That’s The Point Needlecrafts has all the items needed. www.thatsthepointneedlecrafts.com)

5. Give Creatively - Unique personalized gifts are especially meaningful because they show you used your time and en-ergy in thinking about them. A personalized framed photo of a favorite memory you both enjoyed or an engraved ci-gar holder for your Dad who will think of you each time it is used would be perfect. (Phina’s Fine Linens & Gifts has a special section just for personalized gifts. www.phinas.com)

6. Give Your Time - Material things may not always be the best gifts, but almost everyone could use a helping hand from time to time. Create a personal gift certificate to watch your best friends’ kids, so they can have some time to themselves or a night out.

7. Give An Adventure That’s Local - Adventures make great non-material gifts, especially if your loved one likes to get out. A local museum trip or membership, a play or concert for your special aunt. (Visionary Arts Museum www.avam.org and The Baltimore Museum of Industry www.thebmi.org are two great choices.)

8. Work-Based Relationships Gifts - Don’t forget The Hard To Give Category – the people who support you in all sorts of ways; teachers, co-workers, neighbors and community members. Listen to the things they like. Here are a few gift experiences they may enjoy: Gift Cards to an Ice Cream Shop, Coffee Bar, Movie Tickets, or even their favorite place for dessert.

Meaningful gifts are always the best gifts. There are so many options when it comes to presents that show how much you care. Don’t settle for aimless mall-wandering, give that special gift they deserve. (Tips Source: Allison Dail & Paul E. White)

By John Ginovsky

My neighbor, the Wizard Awry, ran for president.

Really, he did. At least in my neighborhood he did. Granted, his candidacy never even approached any level of legitimacy. For one thing, any birth certificate he may ever have had—maybe written on papyrus or some crumbly clay cuneiform tablet—has long since disintegrated in the proverbial mists of time.

No matter.

One day he gestured to me urgently across our little fence in front, as he held a magazine clutched in his gnarled fist.

“These are the choices?” he sneered. “These are the people who we have to choose between to lead our legions into battle? To constitute our counsel as to affairs of state? To represent our realm alongside the wise of the larger world beyond?”

He was holding a folded copy of an old New Yorker on the cover of which the two major party presidential contenders were depicted in bad caricatures.

“Yes. That’s about right,” I said.

“Bah!” he spat. “I can do better.”

Sure enough, the next day a sign emerged in his front garden. It was quite a wizardly sign. It said:

“Vote for me. I will give you what you want.”Below that were these words:

“Tell me what you want. Speak up.”

Then below that was a kind of electronic bill board, only it didn’t say anything itself. Instead, it repeated what you said. I gave it a go:

“I want peace,” I said. Sure enough, the sign repeated: “I want peace.”

That was nice. It stayed that way for a while. Then a kid came by. He said:

“I want a basketball.”

Okay, fair enough. Then someone else came by.

“I want Suzie to like me,” he said.

A bit personal, but maybe the new president could pull that off. I stopped watching and went inside. The next day, though, the

Wizard banged on my door, looking sadder than I’d ever seen him before.

“What is wrong with people?” he gasped. He sat on my couch and before I could say anything he pulled out a tablet from his robe. “Look at this,” he said.

It turned out to be a list of the things people had said to his sign in just the past 24 hours. Edited, here is what I read about what people said they wanted:

• Guns.

• Sex.

• More guns.

• Pink vanilla ice cream.

• Penelope to really like me like I am, not like the super smooth, way over-leveraged jerk that I come across as.

• Ravens. Woo hoo.

• Statehood for Florida, finally.

• A tattoo of skulls and pitchforks and motorcycles all surrounded by freaking hearts and love to my sweety Dorinne. I mean Sandy.

• Truth about Bigfoot and the Arkansas UFO, finally unveiling the Texas cover-up.

• Real good pepperoni pizza delivery.

• A good job.

• A job.

• Lunch.

• Someone to detail my Honda and not gouge me.

• Resolution in the Middle East, especially Argentina.

• A good, cheap chardonnay.

• Honesty in packaging.

• Did someone mention sex?

• A decent gyro, with real good sauce.

• Someone to fix the pot holes, especially on my street.

It went on. Like I said, I’d never seen the wizard so sad.

“This is what people want?” he asked in a whisper. “I don’t think I want to be president,” he sighed.

We sat in silence for a while. Then I said: “You know what I want?”

He closed his eyes. “What?”

“I want peace,” I said.

We were quiet for a while. Then the Wizard Awry went home.

Recently the Minstrel went way outside his comfort zone of Federal Hill and the South Baltimore Peninsula and wandered to a strange, yet mystical land by the ocean known as New Jersey. The actual location was Cape May, where I had the honor and pleasure of playing for the wedding ceremony of a very dear friend and former Hillsider monthly contributing writer, Amy DeTorres. You probably remember her articles about fitness and nutrition and the great tips she gave for achieving and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. She was also a very popular bartender at Regi’s, a favorite Federal Hill watering hole and bistro, for almost two years, and also catered to those of us who sat on the other side of the bar and thought her healthy lifestyle was very much overrated. But let’s get back to the magical land of New Jersey.

To be honest, I have not been to the Jersey shore since I was in college, and went to Wildwood, NJ with a few high school chums. Before that, when I was a child and later a young teen, my family would save all year to go to Atlantic City, and then in later years we’d go to Wildwood because the rides were better. Back then there were four amusement piers as I recall. I’m not really sure why, but I guess my family preferred the swamps of Jersey over the swamps of Ocean City, MD. In fact I have seen photos of my family on the beach of Atlantic City and can remember taking a bus there because we didn’t yet own a car. I also remember staying at a hotel where there was a common bathroom at the end of the hall. Luckily a few years later we finally got a car and stayed in a motel in Atlantic City where we had our own bathroom. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s been quite a while since I’ve been to the Jersey Shore, and I had never been to Cape May.

The wedding was very intimate with only twenty-five family and friends in attendance, and the three songs chosen by Amy and her husband-to-be, John Paul, (JP for short) were short but very appropriate. The first song, which was picked by JP, was Stevie Wonder’s Overjoyed. The song Amy chose

A Hillsider Weddingto walk down the aisle with her father was The Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun, but they wanted an instrumental version--no problem, and more on that later. The exit song was On the Way to Cape May, which I learned was a hit on local New Jersey and Philly radio stations every summer starting in the early 1960s, and one The Minstrel

had never heard until three months ago. Thank goodness for YouTube. It’s a great song, though. For those not familiar with it, a young couple decides to gets married in Cape May but talks of how they fell in love as they passed the ocean-side towns of Sea Isle, Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Wildwood, before finally arriving in Cape May.

Everyone who has an outdoor wedding hopes and prays for good weather, and the day before the wedding, Friday, was beautiful when we arrived. Sunny, near 80 degrees, with a slight ocean breeze. But as it got dark, a mist began to roll in from the ocean and the wind picked up. By 11 pm it was raining and it rained for over twelve hours. We were sitting at lunch the next day and it was windy and raining and

we were just waiting to get a call from the bed and breakfast where the ceremony was being held saying that the wedding would be moved inside. But as we were returning to The Queen Victoria Bed and Breakfast, it stopped raining and the sun started to break through. Twenty minutes later, was still a bit windy, but the sun was out and chairs were

being set up in the courtyard where the wedding would take place. Remember what the Minstrel said about the Beatles song, Here Comes the Sun? It truly was a case of picking the right song for the right occasion.

Even though everyone had rehearsed in the courtyard the night before, one thing we didn’t rehearse was that on the day of the wedding, the bride was twenty minutes late and at 3 pm I was asked to fill in–please play something, pretty much anything. I started off with one of my favorite love songs by the Beatles, entitled And I Love Her, then quickly learned that the father of the groom was a huge Beatles fan. The fact that he and his wife were sitting directly across from where I was set up and they were both singing every word to every Beatles song I played was probably what tipped me off. As I said earlier, I was honored to be asked to play at Amy and JP’s wedding, and my wife and I considered ourselves very fortunate to be invited to such an intimate gathering, where we didn’t really know a lot of people going in,

but were made to feel right at home and part of such a festive occasion and we made a lot of new friends.

Next month The Minstrel will get back to the local live music scene, but everyone at the Hillsider wishes Amy and JP a lifetime of happiness. Please support the local live music scene and as a reminder my partner in crime, Ken Feeley, and I will be returning to Shotti’s Point, 701 E. Fort Ave. on Saturday November 12, from 8 pm until midnight.
