The Perfect Server - Fedora 9Version 1.0

This is a deta iled de scription about how to set up a Fedora

9 server that offers all services needed by ISPs a nd hosters:

Apache w eb server (SSL-capable) with PHP5 and Ruby,

Pos tfix mail server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, BIND DNS

serve r, Proftpd FTP se rver, MySQL se rver, Dovecot

POP3/IMAP, Quota , Firew all, etc. This tutorial is w ritten for

the 32-bit version of Fedora 9, but should apply to the 64-bit

version w ith very little modifications a s w ell.

I will use the following s oftware:

Web Server: Apache 2.2.8

PHP 5.2.5

Ruby

Database Server: MySQL 5.0.51

Mail Server: Pos tfix

DNS Server: BIND9 (chrooted )

FTP Server: proftpd

POP3/IMAP server: Dovecot

Webalizer for web site statistics

In the end you should have a system that works reliably, and if you like you can install the free webhosting

control panel ISPConfig(i.e., ISPConfig runs on it out of the box).

I want to say first that this is not the only way of se tting up s uch a system. There are many ways of

achieving this go al but this is the w ay I take. I do not issue a ny guarantee that this will work for you!

1 Requirements

To install such a sys tem you will need the follow ing:

Down load the Fedo ra 9 DVD iso image from a mirror nea r you (the list of mirrors can be found he re:

http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlists/publiclist/Fedora/9), e.g. http://ftp-stud.hs-

esslingen.de/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/i386/iso/Fedora-9-i386-DVD.iso

an internet connection...

2 Preliminary Note

In this tutorial I use the hostname server1.example.comwith the IP address 192.168.0.100and the

gateway 192.168.0.1. These se ttings might differ for you, so you ha ve to replace them w here appropriate.

3 Install The Base SystemBoot from your Fedora 9 DVD. Select Install or upgrade an existing system:

Don't use the media test - it has bug in it and will drive you crazy reporting media errors when there are none. This typeof problem gives Fedora a bad name. It's ridiculous. Other instructions tell you to be sure and use the media test, not to

skip it. That goes to show you they don't know.

After the reboot, you will see this screen. Select Firewall configurationand hit Run Tool:

I want to install ISPConfig at the end of this tutorial which comes with its own firewall. That's why I disable

the de fault Fedora firewa ll now. Of course, you are free to leave it on a nd configure it to your needs (but

then you shouldn't use any other firewall later on as it will most probably interfere with the Fedora firewall).

4 Fix The Network

When I booted the system, I noticed that I could

connect to and from it w ithin my LAN, but the

system could not connect to the internet. The output of

ifconfig

revealed that eth0 was up and has the correct IP address,

however

route -nee

showed that no gateway had been se t although I specified the correct gateay during the setup. I took a

look at

chkconfig --list

and found that the networkinit script wa s s et to offin all runlevels, however there was another init script,

NetworkManager, which was se t to on. NetworkManageris a tool that figures out the best ne twork connection

for the system and se ts it up - in my case, it see ms to have forgotten the ga tewa y. Anyway, as w e o nly have

one netw ork connection, we don't need the NetworkManager. I disabled it and set networkto on, restarted

the netw ork, and viol, networking is w orking as expected, also after a reboot:

chkconfig NetworkManager offchkconfig --levels 35 network on/etc/init.d/network restart

5 Adjust /etc/hosts

Next we edit /etc/hosts. Make it look like this:

vi /etc/hosts

# Do not remove the following line, or various pro

# that require network functionality will fail.

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain loca

192.168.0.100 server1.example.com server

::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

It is important tha t you add a line for server1.example.comand remove server1.example.comand server1

from the 127.0.0.1line.

6 Configure The Firewall

(You can skip this chapter if you have a lready disabled the firewall at the end of the basic system installation.)

I want to install ISPConfig at the end of this tutorial which comes w ith its ow n firew all. That's why I disable

the default Fedora firewall now. Of course, you are free to leave it on and configure it to your needs (but

then you shouldn't use a ny other firew all late r on as it w ill most probably interfere with the Fedora firewa ll).

Run

system-config-firewall

Select Disabledand press OK.

To check that the firewall has rea lly been d isabled, you can run

iptables -L

afterwards. The output should look like this:

[root@server1 ~]# iptables -L

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination

[root@server1 ~]#

7 Disable SELinux

SELinux is a s ecurity extension of Fedo ra that should provide extended security. In my opinion you don't

need it to configure a secure system, and it usually causes more problems than advantages (think of it afteryou have done a w eek of trouble-shooting because some s ervice wa sn't working as expected, and then you

find out tha t everything was ok, only SELinux wa s caus ing the problem). Therefore I disable it (this is a must

if you w ant to install ISPCo nfig late r on).

Edit /etc/selinux/configand set SELINUX=disabled:

vi /etc/selinux/confi

You can solve this by opening /usr/share /system-config-firewall/sys tem-config-firewall.py

and editing the following:

argv = [ "/usr/sbin/system-config-firewall-tui" ]

to

argv = [ "/usr/bin/system-config-firewall-tui" ]

And try again. That should work...

Just wanted to tell everyone as a novice Linux user the guide was very helpful. I installed Fedora 9 on an older system

but it was a clean install. I would like to say that during the 'yum update' process depending upon a users setup the

'transaction test' can take a long time and not show any progress, so if you are a new Fedora/Linux user and are using

this guide, when coming to this step please wait patiently because of my 451 updates, obviously there is a lot of data

there to test, with no progress shown until the test is complete.

I would strongly recommened enabling SELinux. SELinux is there for your protetion and comes highly recommneded by

the Redhat Security team. Mark Cox : team lead for the Red Hat Security Response explains why SELinux is beneficial

here.

12 Postfix With SMTP-AUTH And TLS

Now we install Postfix and Dovecot (Dovecot will

be our POP3/IMAP server):

yum install cyrus-sasl cyrus-sasl-devel cyrus-sasl-gssapi cyrus-sasl-md5 cyrus-sasl-plain postfixdovecot

Now we configure SMTP-AUTH and TLS:

postconf -e 'smtpd_sasl_local_domain ='postconf -e 'smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes'postconf -e 'smtpd_sasl_security_options =noanonymous'

postconf -e 'broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes'postconf -e 'smtpd_sasl_authenticated_header = yes'postconf -e 'smtpd_recipient_restrictions =permit_sasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauth_destination'postconf -e 'inet_interfaces = all'postconf -e 'mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8'

We must edit /usr/lib/sasl2/smtpd.confso that Postfix allows PLAINand LOGINlogins (on 64bit systems,

this file is in /usr/lib64/sasl2/smtpd.conf). It should look like this:

vi /usr/lib/sasl2/smtpd.conf

pwcheck_method: saslauthdmech_list: plain login

Afterwards we create the certificates for TLS:

mkdir /etc/postfix/sslcd /etc/postfix/ssl/openssl genrsa -des3 -rand /etc/hosts -out smtpd.key 1024

chmod 600 smtpd.keyopenssl req -new -key smtpd.key -out smtpd.csr

openssl x509 -req -days 3650 -in smtpd.csr -signkey smtpd.key -out smtpd.crt

openssl rsa -in smtpd.key -out smtpd.key.unencrypted
