  • PRODUCT DATA SHEET Enviro-Syn HCR 2000 (Version 6.05)

    Synthetic Acid (Patents Pending)

Frequently Asked Questions: Q What is it? A HCR-2000 is a patent pending, synthetic (chemically synthesized) acid. It is an organic salt based product that has equivalent performance properties of Hydrochloric Acid, without the extremely hazardous exposure and corrosive properties. Q Is it regulated for transportation? A Transportation regulations vary by jurisdiction/county. In Canada, Australia and the European Union the product would be regulated by Aluminum corrosion only. Its recommended to review and verify your local transportation regulations. Q How does it work? A Conventional acids like HCl have molecules that are unstable, and therefore react violently on various materials such as calcite, iron, and skin. HCR-2000 has much stronger molecular bonds, resulting in a product that mitigates these violent reactions. Q Is it Hazardous? A Although there is no formal regulatory definition to the term 'Hazardous', HCR-2000 can be considered 'Non-Hazardous' from a handling perspective. NOTE: HCR-2000 is considered corrosive to eyes, eye protection is required. Ensure eyewash

stations are readily available to mitigate the risk. Q Is a shower unit required for operations? A HCR-2000 is non-irritating to skin tissue; therefore there is no need for a safety shower. An on-site shower unit may be dictated by an operational risk assessment or the operators safety policy, but it is not a legal requirement. Q How much rock will HCR-2000 dissolve? A In laboratory settings a 50% HCR-2000 dilution will dissolve roughly 140 kg/m (1170 lb/1000gal) of CaCO3. However, due to its ability to dissolve additional minerals present in formation rock/scale a 50% HCR-2000 dilution can dissolve similar amounts as a 15% HCl acid. Test data available upon request. Q How do you neutralize HCR-2000? A HCR-2000 is neutralized in the same manner as HCl acid, by utilizing a base such as Soda Ash (Na2CO3), Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) or Magnesium Oxide (MgO).

Quality Control: NOTE: It may be required to conduct onsite QC to verify HCR-2000 strength; Determination of HCR-2000 Dilution by Titration:

Pull clean sample of HCR-2000 from bottom of tank Although HCR-2000 is not hydrochloric acid, the product can be titrated by the same

procedures for ease of standardized practice o NOTE: Follow standard titration procedures for HCl acid o Confirm if 1N, 2N or 5N NaOH is used and the corresponding volume of HCR-

2000 is utilized to titrate (1cc, 2cc, or 5cc) *1cc = 1ml o Find the percentage of HCR-2000 from the chart, or the following calculation

may be used if corresponding value is not referenced in chart

    % HCR-2000 = Volume (ml) NaOH x 24.5 S.G. of corresponding % HCR-2000

HCR-2000 Dilution 1N NaOH Volume Required S.G. Total Salinity

    100% 4.7 cc 1.15 42% 66% 3.0 cc 1.10 28% 50% 2.2 cc 1.08 21% 33% 1.5 cc 1.05 14% If specifications fall within +/-2%, product is acceptable for field operations.

NOTE: Final blend S.G. is based on using fresh water only, always verify water source and adjust

    accordingly. See below example: - Multiply percentage of mix water used by S.G. of mix water - Multiply percentage of HCR-2000 used by S.G. of HCR-2000 - Add together for resulting final blend S.G. - i.e. Water with a S.G. of 1.02 mixed with 100% HCR-2000 to make a 33% dilution;

    66% Water x 1.02 = 0.67 and 33% HCR x 1.15 = 0.38; so 0.67 + 0.38 = 1.05 S.G.

NOTE: There is no known shelf life to HCR-2000 once properly blended with water and it will not separate out, although agitation is suggested for longer storage periods.

Blending/Mixing Instructions: HCR-2000 is normally delivered as a concentrate and diluted on location, it is important to ensure proper mixing occurs. While any water source can be utilized, high salinity waters (>15% salinity) should be pre-tested prior to operations taking place. HCR-2000 is heavier than fresh water, and will remain on the bottom of tanks if not mixed sufficiently. Once mixed properly however no separation will occur. The follow procedures are suggested for blending of the HCR-2000:

Determine necessary dilution of product Load required volume of concentrated HCR-2000 into tank or truck. Load required volume of water through bottom port to assist in blending. Circulate mixture for 1 tank volume, if required.

On tanks it is suggested to utilize a bottom valve for suction, and the riser/standpipe for return utilize threaded unions wherever possible

Flush lines with water NOTE: Unlike HCl acid, HCR-2000 will not exhibit high amounts of exothermic heat when mixed

    with water and is non-fuming.

Safety Requirements: With the eye testing categorization of the product it is required to utilize goggles and ensure there is access to an eye wash bottle/station at a minimum for every operation. HCR-2000 is considered a strong acid therefore appropriate chemical handling PPE is always recommended, as well as an operational risk assessment for each situation.

HCR-2000 is non-irritating to skin tissue therefore the necessity of a safety shower will be dictated by a risk assessment or the operators safety policy, as it is not a legal requirement.

HCR-2000 is non-fuming, no special respirators are required. Avoid contact with open wounds. NOTE: Dermal and Ocular testing completed on concentrated product.

  • PRODUCT DATA SHEET Enviro-Syn FW-100

    Water Foamer

    Mixing and Handling:

    Loading Rates:

To aid in gas lifting fluids from the well, add Enviro-Syn FW-100 at 5 l/m. To create a stable foam in fresh water containing KCl or a replacement, add

Enviro-Syn FW-100 at 15 l/m. Creating a stable foam in brines will take from 15 to 20 l/m, high concentration

brines may need more. Foam stability is greatly enhanced by gellants such as Enviro-Syn FR-100. At

higher loadings, the addition of a viscosifier may be more useful than adding more foamer.

Remember that the gas component of foam is compressible and is a different volume down hole than it is on surface, therefore the foam you see at surface is nothing like the foam you have down hole.

    Mixing Procedure:

Dont use water which contains defoamer. Defoamer is effective at knocking foam out of returned water but this water cannot be re-foamed.

It is best to inject Enviro-Syn FW-100 down steam of the pump suction to avoid cavitation.

  • PRODUCT DATA SHEET Enviro HSI-100

    Hydrogen Sulphide Inhibitor

    Application:

Enviro HSI-100 is a color changing, non-flammable hydrogen sulfide scavenger that has been successfully used in the removal of hydrogen sulfide from water based systems.

Enviro HSI-100 It is a formaldehyde-free product and doesnt contain harmful carcinogenic compounds, ammonia, or alcohols.

Typical application is in a scrubber system with a site glass for visual inspection. The initial color of the scavenger is pink and as the chemical becomes neutralized, from reacting with H2S gases, the color changes from pink to black.

    Benefits:

Enviro HSI-100 is used to remove small amounts of H2S from solution so that the

solution can be used on surface conditions in a safe manner. It is beneficial in preventing H2S corrosion but that is not the main function.

It is environmentally responsible with low toxicity. Exhibits low foaming tendencies, fast reaction times, and user friendliness (minimal

    PPE needed).

    Physical Properties:

Physical State clear liquid, pink in color pH 10-11 Odor Mild odor Specific Gravity 1.11 to 1.15 Flash Point (TCC) >100oC Pour Point -40oC Solubility water, brine, isopropanol

    Usage:

Typical usage rate for treatment of sour water, where the air space above the water registers 1000 ppm of H2S - is 10 l/m3. This dosage rate is an example and allows for a considerable safety margin when treating sour water while pumping it.

    Mixing and Handling:

An increasingly important application for Enviro HSI-100 is to render sour formation brine safe to handle and pump. As fresh water is becoming more precious there is increasing pressure to use formation water for well servicing applications.

When water containing H2S (sour water) is stored in a closed vessel, H2S will enter the head space above the water surface until it reaches an equilibrium. The concentration of H2S in the head space may be measured with a GasTech or Drger monitor to determine the concentration in the water. The above table gives the recommended amount of Enviro HSI-100 which should be added to sweeten the water. The quantities listed are greater than the minimum required in order to speed the reaction and provide a healthy safety margin.

    Note:

H2S (hydrogen sulfide) is a highly toxic and dangerous substance. Make sure that you understand safe operating procedure and personal protective

equipment before entering an area where H2S may be present.

    H2S and Steel:

H2S or hydrogen sulfide presents the potential for serious corrosion when in contact

with tubing coils and oilfield tubulars in general. The most serious problem is hydrogen embrittlement which can quickly cause cracking in steel that is being bent or stretched a serious situation for a tubing coil. In addition, H2S is potent in causing the same type of galvanic corrosion seen with acids and salts.

Carbon dioxide dissolved in water will cause a reaction in steel that is similar to H2S, through a different set of chemical reactions.

In the presence of H2S it is important to use a corrosion inhibitor which is specifically designed to deal with hydrogen stress cracking such as Enviro HSI-200.

It has been observed that steel with a tensile strength of 90,000 psi or less is resistant to hydrogen stress cracking, the harder the steel the greater the problem. Regular corrosion will affect both hard and mild steel.

    Usage rates:

When possible, apply Enviro HSI-200 concentrate directly through the wiper sub below the BOP as the tubing/wireline is entering the hole.

    Batch treatments

Mix 60 litres into 2 m of whichever fluid you are using and pump this first o This will coat the inside of the tubing

Mix and pump 2 m batches containing 40 litres of inhibitor every 30 to 60 minutes

If you cannot coat the coil with inhibitor as it is entering the hole, it will be vital to have the inhibitor batches return up the annulus to surface. If this does not happen, the outside of the tubing will not be protected.

Enviro HSI-200 will separate from the carrier fluid to coat the tubing, this means that it will be constantly removed from the fluid. The first fluid to return up the annulus will contain little or no inhibitor and sufficient batches will have to be pumped to ensure that all of the tubing is coated.

  • PRODUCT DATA SHEET Enviro-Syn Lube-100

    Metal Lubricant

    Mixing and Handling:

    Mixing procedure:

-For general pipe lubrication to decrease drag and prevent sticking, Enviro-Syn Lube-100 should be added to the fluid system at 2 l/m3 continuously

-To address pulling problems with sticking pipe, pump a slug containing 20 to 60 litres of Enviro-Syn Lube-100 and continue to add lubricant on the fly until pipe pulls freely

-In the case of pipe which has become stuck in the hole, pump the product in slugs as above while alternately pulling and relaxing the pipe. It may be necessary to repeat this process until the pipe comes free.

The most common cause of ineffectiveness at this point is that it is sometimes difficult to get the lubricant to the location of the sticking. Pipe lubricants are designed to adhere to metal and to repel water. This means that the product will want to float on the surface of the suction tank and resist being mixed in. You must lower the level in the tank and agitate it rapidly to get the product into the pump suction.

Also the product will coat the inside of the tubing string as it is going down. You must pump a high enough volume so that there is still a sufficient amount reaching the point of sticking. Assume that you will lose a portion of the chemical until all metal surfaces are saturated.

Specific tests using Enviro-Syn Lube-100 have determined that it strongly coats metal surfaces and resists washing off. Under continuous usage conditions friction is shown to be reduced by up to 95%.
