nier structure for the gateways, modeled after the entrance gate at Afton Villa Gardens. According to information provided in the book A Creole Lexicon: Architecture, Land-scape, People, pigeonniers are a rel-ic of 16th and 17th century French aristocratic building styles that sometimes appear in Louisiana’s French Creole architecture. These square or hexagonal buildings were structures meant to actually house pigeons, but more often, they served as fashionable symbols of wealth and prestige.

In addition to the pigeonnier, the gateway design calls for landscap-ing that features native species such as magnolias, live oaks, and indig-enous wildflowers. The design also incorporates a plan for wayfinding signage as well as areas for change-able banners announcing upcoming events.

Once a final design had been ap-proved, Field explained, the Foun-dation began a fundraising campaign for this $150,000 project, raising the funds through private donations. To date, the Foundation has raised $100,000; with only $50,000 left to raise, construction began on the first gateway on February 6. Field said they are trying to have the gateway completed by March 5, just in time for Pilgrimage.

When this southern gateway is completed, the Foundation will turn its attention to a similar gateway on Hwy. 61 at the northern boundary of the parish between Louisiana and Mississippi.

The signage and gateways will eventually be donated to the West Feliciana Police Jury, which will be responsible for their upkeep.

“We live in a special place and through this project we endeavored to create a system that would wel-come and orient the traveler in and around the town of St. Francisville and West Feliciana Parish,” Field said.

For more information, visit the Foundation’s website at stfrancisvil-leaf.org where you can learn more about the project and make a dona-tion.

Two local health care facili-ties were honored by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation and the Loui-siana State Nurses Association on Saturday February 16 at the 12th annual Nightingale Awards. The ceremony took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge.

The awards are intended to rec-ognize excellence in nursing and quality service in the nursing and healthcare industry.

Primary Care Providers for a Healthy Feliciana (PHPHF), which has medical and mental health fa-cilities scattered throughout East Feliciana, West Baton Rouge, Liv-ingston, and Tangipahoa parishes, received the 2013 Outstanding Em-

ployer or Facility of the Year Award.PHPHF Clinical Director Darie

Gilliam explained that the judges for the competition were nursing lead-ers from all over the country. About 15 states were represented among the judges who chose PCPHF for the award.

Gilliam, who accepted the award, said, “Basically, it’s confirmation of the hard work and the dedication that all the employees give.”

Lane Regional Medical Center was named 2013 Acute Care Hospi-tal of the Year (61-160 beds).

The Nightingale Award for Acute Care Hospital of the Year is based on five criteria: innovation through nursing leadership and manage-

ment, organizational support of nursing practice, evidence of reg-istered nurse decision making and participation in management de-cisions, recognition of registered nurse achievements and support of nursing participation in profession-al organizations.

“Lane Regional Medical Center seeks to provide progressive, com-petent and caring healthcare ser-vice to the patients we serve,” said Jennifer Johnson, chief nursing of-ficer. “Nurses at Lane are the em-bodiment of these to the patient at the point of care. It is an honor and privilege for me to lead and work with the outstanding nursing staff at Lane.”

Historical Association and Old Hickory Railroad Need Volunteers! On Saturday, February 9, The

Old Hickory Railroad took a big step toward restoring the rail-road to operation when the nar-row gauge locomotive’s boiler was lifted off its frame and placed on a flatbed trailer for transport to a local boiler repair shop for evalu-ation. The railroad shut down four years ago over concerns, among others, about the condition of the boiler, which just made 50 years old this year.

The effort to restore the railroad is being headed by Jackson busi-nessman Mike Salmon, who chairs the Republic of West Florida His-torical Association’s board of di-rectors. The Historical Association owns the railroad and the twelve-acre site in Jackson where the Re-public of West Florida Historical Museum and the Old Hickory Rail-road depot are located.

Until it shut down, the train ran each Saturday and Sunday from March through November, car-

rying passengers on a scenic and historic ride through Jackson. The route included a stop at Old Cen-tenary College, the original site of Centenary College and, today, a State Historic Site.

“We know we have a lot of work in front of us,” said Andrew Martin, a member of the Histori-cal Association’s board. The proj-ect going forward will be heavily dependent upon volunteers as the funds for a staff to complete the project are simply not there.”

Currently, volunteers are need-ed for the immediate need of clearing the tracks for inspection which are currently covered in four years’ worth of matted grass and weeds, shrubs and small trees. Martin noted that eventually, the train will need engineers, firemen, narrators, mechanics, ticket sell-ers, track workers and anyone else who is excited about the train and willing to pitch in. But for now, those with trimmers, small chain

saws and pruners are the most needed.

The Old Jackson Railroad of-fers something magical to its pas-sengers, and interested individuals

may help bring this treasure back to life. To get involved, contact Andrew Martin at [email protected].

The fifty-year-old boiler from the Old Hickory Railroad’s steam locomotive,“The Gen-eral Jackson,” is lifted off its frame in preparation for its transport to Furnace and Tube Service, Inc. in Gonzales for evaluation and repair. The locomotive was one of 21 built by Crown Metal Products of Wyano, Pennsylvania in the 1960s and 70s for amusement parks around the country.

Missy Higgins, 2013 Audubon Pilgrimage chairman, toasted the Pilgrimage volunteers at a dessert and champagne reception at the home of Peter and Finney Couhig held February 17. Invited to the lovely event were the various co-ordinators for homes and numerous committee chairmen, all of whom have spent countless hours orga-nizing the 42nd Annual Audubon Pilgrimage to be held in St. Francis-ville on March 15, 16 and 17.

The affair was chaired by Laura McClendon, with a committee of

volunteers including Kate Seal, Car-oline Alberstadt, Megbe Hughes, Christy Dantin, Ashley Fox-Smith and Genie McClendon. A cham-pagne bar featuring mimosas, man-go infused wine, and fresh fruit accompanied a wide array of hand-made desserts and cheeses. Higgins, on behalf of the Pilgrimage Steering Committee and the West Feliciana Historical Society Board, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to all of the volunteers for their efforts in making this year’s Pilgrimage a suc-cess.

On Monday, February 4, mem-bers of the Inner Wheel Club of Ba-ton Rouge met at the new site for the club’s Attic Trash and Treasure Sale, to be held from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. Pre-viously held at the old Mervyn’s at Cortana, the sale this year will be held at the old Walmart in Baker, 14740 Plank Rd. The proceeds from this year’s sale will go to Brave Heart Children in Need, Inc., St.. Vincent de Paul; Mary Bird Perkins Cancer

Last year’s sale raised $173,000 for the recipient charities. This year, credit cards will be accepted, which organizers hope will help raise even more money this year. Donations can be dropped off at the site be-tween 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday-Saturday until March 1.
