Do Now (ALWAYS SILENT)

Write down 2 strengths you bring to the team on a post-it

Write down 2 areas you would like initial support coming into this year of teaching

post your notes on the posters labeled strengths and needed support when complete

(facilitator will read them off the lists to identify common trends 10 mins)

Fellow Evaluation

Objectives:

FWBAT become familiar with the Fellow Effectiveness Rubric, how it will be used to formally evaluate their practice and used for frequent informal observations

FWBAT decipher between Instructional Expectations vs. Culturally Competency/Professionalism Expectations

FWBAT understand and be able to articulate the program mission

New Approach Toward Evaluation

Frequent short observations

Frequent verbal and written conversations around practice

Integrating what Coordinators observe into weekly PD

Eliciting parental and student input

Focused on student achievement (TOP PRIORITY)Geared toward differentiated professional growth

(quarterly or mid/end of year evaluations with full lesson observation)

Training on the various tools will come in separate session

Grounded in the Common Core State Standards

What Factors Have Led to Our Success?

2 Words= Reflection and Feedback

We set time aside for personal and team reflection, collaboration, discussion, planning, assessing, data collection and analysis all in a continuous cycle

We ask students, families, Fellows, Coordinators, Teachers, Principals, District, Blueprint, etc. what’s going well and WHY? What can we improve and HOW?

Instructional Expectations (blue)

The Instructional Expectations are grounded in the 8 Mathematical Practices from Common Core State Standards

which are grounded in behaviors and actions that best support mathematics instruction and are consistent for

every grade level K-12

SMP1-Make Sense of Problems and Persevere in Solving Them SMP2-Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively SMP3-Construct Viable Argument and Critique the Reasoning of Others SMP4-Model With Mathematics SMP5-Use Appropriate Tools Strategically SMP6-Attend to Precision SMP7-Look for and Make Use of Structure SMP8-Look for and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning

Equally Important are the Expectations of Cultural Competency & Professionalism (green)

The Math Fellows Program has incredibly high expectations for how we conduct ourselves and

what we strive to achieve. In order to do that, we:

Create an Inclusive CultureSet and Maintain High Behavioral ExpectationsActively Engage FamiliesCollaborate and Contribute to TeamUse Data to Drive InstructionReflect on Practice and Seek FeedbackEmbody Program Mission

Feedback Frequency

Quick observations and walk-throughs done on a weekly basis by your Coordinator

Once a week (minimum) you will be provided verbal and/or written feedback

Once every 10 days (minimum) you will have a 5-30 minute conversation with your Coordinator along with a written document that captures precise praise, instructive feedback, notes, strengths and next steps for development

Mid/End of Year full evaluation (includes full lesson observation, a 30-45 minute debrief) potentially quarterly based on career path of Fellow or Coordinator discretion

Let’s Dive In

Look at the last CC/Professionalism Expectation: Embody Program Mission:

In groups of 2-3 read over all of the indicators (Fellow, Student, and Evidence) and discuss the

what each one may mean and how this might look in tutorial (remember you are ONLY looking at the

row from “Embody Program Mission”(15 mins)

Share out with Facilitator writing notes on chart paper (10 mins)Questions and reflections about this expectation (5 mins)

High Behavioral Expectations and Creating an Inclusive Culture

In your groups of 2-3 get a piece of chart paper and divide it into 2 sections. One side is for High Behavioral Expectations and the other for Creating an Inclusive Culture

(20 mins for each expectation)

These 3 expectations are what we prioritized together as a group of Coordinators. Would you have prioritized different expectations?

Exit Task (ALWAYS SILENT)

How will this rubric support you in bettering your practice?

How would you describe the 3 indicators we studied today?

What continued questions do you have about the Fellow Evaluation cycle and/or rubric?
