USF DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS
FROM THE CHAIR This is a great time of the year when we celebrate our students and residents, recognize their accomplishments and mark their transition to the next level. At MCOM graduation this week 164 students received their MD degree. Everyone in Pediatrics should feel a sense of pride in this milestone for we all play a part—some large, some small— in their education.
The commencement speaker this year was Victor Dzau, President of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly IOM), and former Chancellor of Health Affairs at Duke University and President and CEO of the Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Dzau gave an inspirational message to the graduates about the importance of science and evidence, and the critical need for healthcare leaders to fight to maintain their place in our society. Scientific evidence should inform not only our care delivery but our health policies. Dr. Dzau gave a charge to the graduates to be active in promoting science. As providers, we are fighting fake news every day— each time we counsel a parent who wants to refuse a vaccine, or dispel an

KUDOS
Jeannette Fleischer, ARNP, was recognized by Metropolitan Ministries this month as Volunteer of the Day. She received a t-shirt, balloons, a certificate and thank you cards from staff and patients. Congratulations, Jeannette, and thank you for your dedication!
Dr. Lynn Ringenberg has been a mentor to Cindy Nguyen for her Capstone Project. Cindy has matched for an internal medicine residency, and her poster is being displayed at the USF Health Office of Research, Innovation & Scholarly Endeavors (RISE).
Brittany Leigh, senior PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Larry Dishaw, was invited to be a keynote speaker at the 22nd Evergreen International Phage Meeting to be held in August. This is a great honor, as graduate students are seldom invited to be keynote speakers at international congresses.

Letter continued from page 1 unfounded fear.
We need to promote critical thinking in our society and among ourselves. It takes effort to take the time to explain not just what but why and be credible and trustworthy to our patients and families. Our evidence-based discussions on Friday morning are wonderful opportunities to review the hierarchy of evidence, discuss the nuances of statistical analysis and help students and residents analyze the myriad of data they face each day. We all need to understand the what and why and not just say “that’s the way we do it here”.
Tomorrow is the March for Science all over the country – there will be a march in St. Pete and Clearwater. In addition to our individual practices we need to fight for continued support of research and education in all areas of science. Our lives and our world depend on it…. To support our trainees’ efforts at moving science forward I also recommend that everyone make an effort to attend the Fellows Forum and Resident Forum being held next week.
To end, as Dr. Dzau did, with a quote from Hippocrates:
“There are in fact two things, science
and opinion; the former begets
knowledge, the latter ignorance.”
Patricia J. Emmanuel, M.D. Chair, Department of Pediatrics
