REGARDING NPD

SUSPENSIONS:

At the November 25, 08 Board

of Trustees meeting, a motion was passed unanimously that

a brother would be suspended for non-payment of dues if he

was one year in arrears instead two years in arrears. This

translates as follows: On August l of each fiscal year, a

Brothers dues are due and payable. If they have not been

paid by May 31" ofthe following year, the brother will be

declared NPD and suspended from membership unless prior

arrangements have been made with the office.

Reason: It costs the Valley S60 per year to keep a

Brothers name on the books. This takes into account the

Supreme Council, Council of Deliberation and Masonic

Temple Assessments. It also includes postage for 2 , `' & 3"'

notices, follow up letters and phone calls, Valley Staff labor

etc.

In others words it saves the Valley money if you

PAY YOUR DUESINA TIMELY MANNER. For your

information dues represent 85% of our Total Budget.

Brothers, each year in February, your Finance

Committee and Executive Secretary struggle with putting

tegether a balanced budget for the next fiscal year. One of

the factors is estimating the amount of dues we will have

available to run the Valley for the ensuing year. As you can

see, to keep your Valley running efficiently and maintaining

the high level of services the office provides, we need the

support of each one of our dues paying members including

Life Members.

The message was clear, our last

reunion was very well received and

fun. The efforts of Larry Dillon,Gerry Millar, John Wallsteadt, theentire backstage crew, and our everfaithful bartender, Paul Goosmann to

wake sure everyone was busy andl J

enjoying our time together is sincerely

appreciated by all . Our challenge now is ensuring that the

reunions continue to evolve, be enjoyable. and full while

still providing the important lessons we bring to our

members each time.

As I mentioned in my last missive one of the most

i mportant things we can do during reunions is make

everyone feel welcome and accepted. You may recall that I

challenged you to meet and talk with as many of the new

members as possible and 1 believe there was a sincere effort

to do so. However, we flailed. we missed one of the new

members and his wife at the hospitality room and his wife is

now wondering why should she return. You and I know

why that is so important. It's the support of wife and family

which allows us to stay so involved in the Craft. We must

in the future make an i ndefatigable effort to greet our new

members and make them feel like the family we want them

to be.

To the new member and wife you have my sincerest

apology for failing in our obligation to you as new members

of the Scottish Rite family. Our oversight was unintended

and our fervent hope is that you will forgive us our

inattention and return to the next reunion. They really are

turn and enjoyable and become a very meaningful part of

one's life over time.

Though it seems hard to believe another year is nearly

gone as I write this. It's the time of year when we

remember our friends, good memories, the tempestuous

ti mes of our world, and start a new year with hone that the

world will truly get better in every way. But more

especially it's the time of year when we celebrate the birth

of our Savior, one who gave all that our sins might be

forgiven.

My wish for each of you at this time of year and always

is for good health, financial well-being, and an enjoyable

family filled holiday season.

ARE YOU SHOCKEDYET?

Wow! Are you allsurviving the turmoil ofthe last two or threemonths? First we were

hit with the shock of financial institutions and WallStreet failures. Can you believe the sheer idiocy ofthese so-called experts. Our own governmcatprecipitated the whole thing by deregulating thefinancial institutions, ordered them to give loans topeople who could not pay them back, houses were soldto people who could not afford them, and buyers wereactually urged to buy more house than they could everpay for. There was no oversight of any kind. Youwould have thought someone would have understoodthe risk. Meanwhile people in the financial institutionswere taking bonuses in the mill ions and even peoplewho lost jobs took severance pay of millions! To myway of thinking some really BIG HEADS should roll.

People like us who have worked hard and saved arenow hit with tremendous losses of value of ourinvestments. Hopefully if we hang tight the values willcome back but what about people whose investmentsare gone? Will any institution help them recover? Is itfair for 70 year old or over people to have to be lookingfor jobs-in this lob market?

Now the government is helping with a$700,000,000,000.00 - can you believe all thosezeroes - and you know who is really paying this. Howabout getting some of those millions in bonuses andseverance payments back?

The price of gasoline that kept going up and up hasat last returned to a more reasonable price. Maybesome of the people who were struggling _just to pay forgetting to and from jobs can now use their money forother expenses, like paying their mortgage.

The next big thing to hit the fan is credit card debt.People who have been using their credit cards as loanswhen they didn't have the money to buy gas and othernecessities can't pay off the credit card bills and banksalready stressed with unpaid mortgage loans are going

to again get hit, in fact already are, with unpaid bills.But credit cards were given willy-nilly to people whoshouldn't have had them iii the first place and somepeople held dozens of cards. Credit cards given tocollege students! Who's poorer than a college student?

The election is finally over, the people havedecided, an historic selection has been made, and wecan only pray that the correct choice has been made.

When it all shakes down and the dust finally settles,you know who is going to be the saving grace of allthese problems are the good old staid mid-westernerswho work hard, pay their bills, save money whereverand whenever they can, and try to pick up the pieces tosalvage whatever they can of a bad situation. I hopethat Washingtonitcs, the banking institutions and WallStreet have learned a lesson. I hope that we can survivethis debacle and come back better than ever. God blessus all.

In 1992 there were 3500 members in the Valle y of

Grand Rapids. Today there are about 1500 members.

However, we are turnip; the corner. We are ve ry close to

seeing total membership numbers increasing. Just a few

events will give us the results we want: membership

By now, I'm sure everyone knows the SAC Club is theSponsor A Child Club, fornmed to help finance our great32"" Degree Learning Center for C.'hildren. For those of youthat have riot joined, please consider becoming a member.

A one-time donation, to the SAC Club, in any amountqualifies you for lifetime membership. Currently, over 200individuals and organizations have made donations rangingfrom S 1.00 to man y thousands of dollars. Our currentdonation total is well over Sl30,000 and growing. This hasprovided a "scholarship" for 26 children afflicted withdyslexia. Funding for the first child was ire June 2003, andfunding for the 26 child was October 2008. The estimatedcost to provide training is S5,000 per child.

Remember, there are no regular meetings, no chairs toprogress through, and no annual dues. Another night athome with the family, for a change, should be worthsomething. Greetings Brethren one and all. We hope thesegreetings find everyone in good health and good spirits.The holiday season has cone to a close and the Board ofTrustees hopes everyone had a very nice Christmas and thehappiest of New Years.

We had a light turn out for our Holiday Dinner onDecember 20'''. However. plans are already in the worksfor next years holiday dinner. Brother John Hansen, andothers had worked hard at putting the dinner together forus and they deserve a lot of Thanks.

A big THANKS to all of the Officers, the Board ofTrustees, and all the other Brothers in the Valley who haveput forth a lot of hard work this past year. Hard work thathas helped to keep this Valley stay afloat.

Congratulations to Brothers Charles Fick and DonaldSevick. Brother Fick was elected to receive his 33 rd degreein Boston, MA; in August of this year. Sluttish Rite Scholarships

A reminder to get your Scottish Rite scholarship

applications at the Scottish Rite office in Grand Rapids. Call

1 800 340-4060 and they will be sent to you. They will be

available in November. The due date for turning them back

in to the office is February 20, 2009. Every year the ScottishRite awards qua lified students scholarship money from the

Abbott and Michigan Scottish Rite fund. With today's huge

college cost, every scholarship obtained helps defray costs.

Parents and grandparents who have loved ones going to

college may also send for an application. Please take

advantage of this wonderful opportunity and get a

scholarship application. Any donations to these fends wouldgreatly be appreciated.

The Valley is inviting all Master Masons to become a

4° Scottish Rite Mason following the Scottish Rite Club

Breakfast. The 40 Master Traveler will be conferred in full

costume in the 5" floor Amphitheatre of the Grand Rapids

Masonic Temple beginning 10:00 a.m. The day will be

concluded by 11:00 a.nn..

The fees to join Scottish Rite are 5150.00 plus 540.00pro-rated dues for a total ofS190.00. The fees include thenew 4° member to receive the remaining 28 degrees at alater date with the opportunity to attend our Spring Reunion

Looking For a Few Good Men

The average Master Mason who joins the Scottish Rite surely asks himself, Now what? I've reached the 32° Degree. I've beenwelcomed into the Fraternity. I'm interested in further light in Masonry. Now what do I do?" Although he has experienced the degreesas part of a class of new members, he discovers that he is now part of something much different than his Symbolic Lodge. He sees thatthe active members seem to he involved in many different capacities throughout the Rite and working in cliques. He also discovers thatmany members present wear purple, white, and red hats and seem to he involved in every aspect of the operation of the Valley andoften directing those around them. Not knowing that these are honors awarded for service to the Rite and the community, they may feelsubordinate and out of place. Little do they realize that most members around them have not received these honors, but enjoy workingtoward making the events a success.

Many will say that the solution is to "get the new member involved." It takes many skills to make a Reunion successful but hedoesn't know how the Valley works or who to comfortably contact to get involved in one of these "cliques". Where can a new memberfind fellowship among its members and learn how to become a participant? Where can a long time member go to play a larger role inthe Valley? Where can the Valley leadership look to draw experienced leaders for future leadership roles in the Valley" In answer tothese and many other questions, the Grand Rapids Scottish Rite is forming a Chapter of Knights of Saint Andrew.

Who are the Knights of Saint Andrew?In 1314, sixty-three mounted Templar Knights, with no prior notice, charged onto the fields of Bannockburn and saved a faltering

Scottish army by helping them defeat a much greater English force. Because of their actions, Scotland was able to reclaim her freedom.To honor the service and leadership of these Templars, Robert the Bruce formed the Order of Saint Andrew and gave these fugitiveknights a place to call home.

The modern day Order of Knights of St. Andrew (KSA) is an organization exclusively for 32° "Black Hat" Sub lime Princes of theRoyal Secret and models itself on the noble example of those first sixty-three knights. Its mission is to help its members become moreactive and play a larger role in the Valley; to support the Executive Secretary in the many needs of the Va ll ey, and to instil] a sense ofService and Duty upon its members and provide an example to others.

Service, however, should not be construed as servility. The Knights do not wait on tables, nor do they park cars or clean up after afunction. If they perform any of these tasks, they do so on their own, not as Knights of Saint Andrew. Some of the services they may

provide are aiding the 'l ylers, acting as greeters, escorting dignitaries and ladies at special events, serving as guides, assisting in degreework, and helping present the Colors. The list can continue on as new ideas and concepts are developed to meet needs and goals. Inshort, they do for the Scottish Rite whatever is dignified and likely to re fl ect honor on the Fraternity, in public or in private.

Their flexibility and enthusiasm will make the Knights of St. Andrew one of the Valley's most active and desirable organizations.Our purpose is to provide service, education, fellowship, and fun to members and friends of the Scottish Rite, especially the 32nddegree Masons who make up the vast majority of the membership of the Rite. What an excellent way to nurture fellowship and developfuture leaders as they learn their organizational and leadership skills, explore the inner workings of the V alley, and thus gain a deeperadmiration for our Order and Brethren who work in Freemasonry as a whole.

The snow has set new records all over lowerMichigan, but that doesn't stop us hard-core golfersfrom thinking about making that great drive or sinkinga long birdie putt! YUP! It's almost time for the SixthAnnual +I TEDDY BEAR SCRAMBLE. For the firstfive of these, we heard several of you "suggest" that "Iwould play if it was a little closer to home", so wehave addressed that. In 2009, there will be TWO TBSevents one in South Haven at the Beeches Golf Clubon Saturday, July 18, and one in Grand Rapids at acourse to be named later on the same date if possible.
