As Rotarians we are expected to contribute to the Rotary Foundation as little as $100 which is Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY). As PDG Ijeoma Pearl Okoro will say 'Giving is not the exclusive right of the Rich but for the Living and the

In many ways, The Rotary Foundation is an invisible presence in our clubs.

Most of what we do in our clubs and our districts, on a weekly basis, we do without the active involvement of the F o u n d a t i o n . B u t o u r Foundation is invisible in our clubs in the same way the foundation of a building is invisible when you're in it: Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not holding you up.

The Foundation that enabled Rotary to take on polio is, in many ways, the foundation upon which our Rotary service is built. For 100 years, since it came into existence with a first donation of $26.50, the Foundation has supported and strengthened our service, enabled our ambitions, and allowed us to be the organization that we are. Because of the Foundation, Rotarians know that if we have the ambition and put in the work, very little is truly beyond us.

It is an incredibly effective model that we have here in Rotary, one that no other organization can match. We are completely local and completely global: We have local skills, connections, and knowledge in over 35,000 clubs, in nearly every country of the world. We have a deserved reputation for transparency, effectiveness, and good business practices, and because we are highly skilled professionals as well as volunteers, we achieve a level of efficiency that very few other organizations can approach.

To put it simply, a dollar given to The Rotary Foundation has a great deal more muscle than a dollar given to most charities. If you want to spend a dollar on Doing Good in the World, you can't do better than to spend it with the Foundation. That is not just me speaking out of pride; it is verifiably true and is r e fl e c t e d i n o u r r a n k i n g s b y i n d e p e n d e n t organizations.

In the Foundation's centennial year, Rotarians surpassed our goal of raising $300 million. If you were part of that achievement, you have been part of something tremendous. Somewhere in the world, someplace you have probably never been, people you may never meet will lead better lives because of you. Ultimately, it is our Foundation that lets us make good on our core beliefs: that we can make a difference, that we have an obligation to do so, and that working together, as well and as efficiently as we can, is the only way to effect real and lasting change.

A few months ago, I raised the question, "What do the Trustees

do, anyway?" I reflected that a critical role of ours is to listen. T h i s m o n t h , R o t a r y Foundation Month, I can happily report that you speak volumes – and that you are heard.

The late RI President-elect Sam F. Owori said he saw in Rotarians "an incredible passion to make a difference" and wanted to "harness that enthusiasm and pride so that every project becomes the engine of peace and prosperity."

From your letters, reports, and wonderful stories, we know you share Sam's vision of a world where Rotarians unite and take action to create sustainable change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Last year we saw an increase in the number of global and district grants initiated and another record high in Rotary Peace Fellowship applications. We also saw increased totals in overall giving, reflecting your passion for what we do as "People of Action." A special thanks to Rotary's club and district leaders for providing continuity in all our endeavors.

Recognition as the World's Outstanding Foundation by

TRF Chair's Message Month of November 2017

the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its international convention affirms the work you are helping make possible. AFP's committee of judges cited Rotary's comprehensive campaign to eradicate polio as a major factor in the Foundation's selection.

To Benefactors, Bequest Society members, and all levels of Major Donors, thank you! You are building financial stability for the future. Our Endowment Fund continues to grow because of your belief in the Foundation and its continually evolving programs. We are well underway with our "Building TRF Endowment: 2025 by 2025" initiative – to achieve $2.025 billion in gifts and commitments by 2025.

As one Rotarian to another, from my heart to yours, please accept my personal thanks for your unflagging work and many accomplishments over the years. One of the genuine privileges of serving in a key leadership role in Rotary is being able to continue learning from Rotarian friends as passionate and committed as you.

Let us celebrate Rotary Foundation Month together!

Thank you. Thank you.

Rotary Events and Programs Important to Your Clubs

and Districts

Dear fellow Rotarians,

I would like to tell you about my personal experience with the Rotary Global Rewards program.

After the International Assembly last January, which is a very tiring event for the President-elect, Juliet and I needed a week's break. So with our friends Don and Carolyn, we went to Florida to enjoy the winter sunshine and visit the theme parks in Orlando.

I had just received a briefing on the progress of Rotary Global Rewards, so it was fresh in my mind and I went on to the website to see what offers were available in Orlando. As an accountant with Scottish heritage, I enjoy a bargain!

It was with delight that I discovered a significant discount offered on entry to the theme parks, so Don make our booking through Rotary Global Rewards. Very simple to do, and a portion of our spending went back to Rotary.

The number and the variety of offers are growing all the time, so I recommend to Rotarians that they visit the Global Rewards page or download the Rotary Club Locator app to investigate this interesting program.

Rotary's fifth World Polio Day celebration, on 24 October, is an occasion for us to celebrate our progress against polio and look to the future. You can participate by downloading promotional materials and resources to help you plan a successful World Polio Day event. Remember, hosting a World Polio Day event in your community fulfills one of the optional goals for my presidential citation. Be sure to share your plans by registering your event.

Our friends and partners in polio eradication, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will co-host our World Polio Day livestreamed event at their headquarters in Seattle, Washington, USA. The event, beginning at 2:30 p.m. PST, will include a global polio status update along with messages from experts and celebrity ambassadors. It will be streamed live and then available for viewing at endpolio.org.

I'm also excited to announce that the new Rotary public image campaign, People of Action, is now available in the Brand Center for use by districts and clubs. This campaign helps us with the important task of telling our stories to people outside of our clubs, in the communities we serve. New ads and resources will continue to be posted in the Brand Center over the next several months.

I hope you will join me in embracing this campaign and encouraging other Rotarians to do the same. Together, we can show – and tell – the world we are People of Action, and send a powerful message that resonates across languages and cultures to raise worldwide understanding of Rotary.

Lastly, I know many of you have many great initiatives, projects, and information to share with the Rotary world. As such, I'd like to officially invite you to submit a breakout session proposal for the 2018 Toronto Convention.

Breakout sessions can inspire attendees, helping them polish their leadership skills and giving them new ideas for projects, fundraising, strengthening membership, and more! Submit your proposal online by Sunday, 1 October 2017. Please contact our Learning & Development team with any questions.

I hope to see you all in Toronto as we come together as a part of Rotary: Making a Difference.

Sincerely,

Ian RiseleyRotary International President, 2017-18ONE ROTARY CENTER1560 SHERMAN AVENUEEVANSTON, ILLINOIS 60201-3698 USAROTARY.ORG

Bill Gates, co-chair of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and RI President John Germ share the recent news about their partnership in the fight to eradicate polio.

The historic pledges of new funds at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, will go toward drastically shrinking the gap $1.5 billionin the funding that the partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative say is needed to reduce polio cases to zero worldwide.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said ending polio would be one of the world's greatest achievements.

"Polio is the thing I spend the most time on. Everyday I look at my email to see if we have a new case," Gates said. "I'm very inspired to be part of this. I'm also very humbled."

Rotary International President John F. Germ announced that Rotary would increase its commitment and raise $50 million per year over the next three years. Rotary has raised more than $1.7 billion to fight the disease since 1985.

“Right now, every time a new case is identified, it really could be the last one the world ever sees,” Germ said.

Gates told the crowd of nearly 24,000 that, starting 1 July, his will extend its 2-to-foundation1 match to cover up to $50 million in donations to Rotary for each of the next three years. The match and donations to Rotary would add up to $150 million per year over the next three years, which will add up to $450 million to the fight.

Twenty-seven countries, organizations, companies, and individuals pledged $1.2 billion at the Rotary International Convention in June. The United Kingdom pushed the total to $1.3 billion with a $130 million pledge in August.

The new funding will go toward polio eradication efforts such as disease surveillance, responses to any outbreaks, and the vaccination of more than 400 million children annually.

It might be the loneliest place in the world.

It's the ultimate crisis.Shame and humiliation take over what was once a reasonably happy life. Maybe even an incredibly successful life. But most of all we are the problem. It's our fault. We don't feel shame, we are shame.Different challenges, different struggles might be your rock bottom. But the outcome is the same.We have no idea how to dig ourselves out of the hole we've fallen into. Heck, we might still have the shovel that we used to dig the hole in the first place and still have no clue how to use it to make our way out.And it's far to easy to stay there, where we can wallow in our failure and misery.Yet…this doesn't need to be the end of the line. It doesn't mean we're here to stay. And just to prove that you can still soar, even having hit rock bottom, I want to share with you this wonderful video of Taylor Conroy's journey to rock bottom and how, despite every adversity, every incredible difficulty he had to face, he's still standing.Pay attention to the three major lessons here…applicable to both our personal and business life. They're truly personal development gold.Taylor also shares a gem of a quote that makes a wonderful mantra for our day…especially those days when everything is going to hell in a hand-basket.

For starters, if you're anything like me I bet you didn't know that Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to some serious disorders, like cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and digestive problems to name a few.

Scary. Right?

Dr. Michael Holick a leading expert and pioneer in Vitamin D research says that a lack of this vitamin is our most common health challenge in the world today.

Since I'm pretty certain you don't want to fall prey to any health disorder and would like to keep your heart and brain functioning at their very best and your skin beautiful and glowing…here's what I've discovered.

Brain, heart, gut and skin

Getting enough vitamin D is essential for our neurological health and researchers are currently investigating the link between low levels of this vitamin and Alzheimer's disease. Good to know! Right?

We all want to have a healthy heart and once again this vitamin plays a part because our heart muscle and other circulation elements are full of vitamin D receptors, which means they need certain levels of vitamin D for optimum health and function.

Who knew?

Those vitamin D receptors also play a part in diabetes…so for those of us who don't have it, and don't want it and even those who do, maybe supplementing with vitamin D could boost your health. But clearly it's something to check with your doctor before embarking on any changes in your regimen!

I'd already made the choice to up my vitamin D intake because hopefully I was one of the 'some people' whose gut would benefit and it just might help reduce the risk of more damage.

As for our skin. Well it turns out that if we have insufficient Vitamin D in our bodies our epidermal cells won't replenish as they should and our skin becomes thinner and more fragile. Woah. Not so good when we begin to sag or get dry skin and end up looking like wrinkled prunes.

Vitamin D is absolutely essential to

ears ago, when I was diagnosed with a Ypossible life threatening disease caused by acid reflux, I was shocked to discover

that a vitamin that is essential for health and well being was critically low in my body.

Vitamin D was a missing link in my greater health and well being. After a little research I learned that Vitamin D increases muscle strength and could help acid reflux in some people, by strengthening the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus. That got my attention!

But how could I possible be deficient? I live in the Sunshine State where it's sunny almost all of the time. On average our sunshiny days are around 250 a year. How could I be deficient in the sunshine vitamin?

It was too strange. Except it turned out I'm not that unusual after all.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency happens to be a global epidemic. Three out of every four of Americans for instance don't have enough to keep all our tissues in good working order.

Don't worry if you didn't know that…or know why it matters because I've got a ton more info to share with you.

a day. If you're older than 70, you need 800 IU a day.

Some sources say considerably higher daily amounts of vitamin D…as high as 2000 IU per day are needed. And that's the amount I take to maintain decent levels in my body. Annual blood tests keep me aware of my levels.

Although the exact amount may be in question, such we are al l such individuals, the importance of vitamin D is not. Talk to your doctor for guidance on how to ensure you get the right amount for your body.

I am not a physician, or medical expert of any kind, so please take what I write as my own personal experience…I would never suggest that supplementing with Vitamin D is for everyone.

It's always wise to consult with your doctor anyway before taking supplements to make sure they don't interfere with any medications. Too much vitamin D can be as harmful as too little, so take them on your doctor's advice, or try a little extra sun.

To your great health.

maintaining healthy and good looking skin.

So what should we do?

Sunshine is the best means of getting vitamin D into our bodies, but we've all been scared off by the risk of skin cancer to such a degree that, for those of us who have a history of skin cancer in the family, we might not be all that keen on sitting in the sun for 15 minutes without any sunscreen. Especially the fierce sun of say…Florida!

The right kind of Vitamin D matters

There are various foods that contain this essential vitamin, but I learned it would take an awful lot of them to get the amount of vitamin D we need.

That leaves us with supplements. And if we're going to be using supplements, which aren't all equal or readily bioavailable, make it Vitamin D3, the most readily available form.

There are lots of good ones available, just do your research.

We are all at risk of deciency and being aware of the role D3 plays as a nutritional supplement allows us to make healthy choices for our brain, our body and wellbeing.
