Journalist Harry Fitzglen is less than thrilled to write
up the opening of some glittering new art gallery.
But the boredom falls away when he meets Simone
Anderson, whose oddly compelling photographs are on display.
Harry loves a girl with a past, and Simone’s is a doozy: What
exactly happened to her long-disappeared twin sister? And what
is her connection to another pair of twins, born nearly 100 years
ago? Every question Harry asks points to the Welsh border and
a ruined mansion called Mortmain House. As Harry delves into
Mortmain’s grim history, he finds himself drawn into a set of
interlocking mysteries, each one more curious—and disturbing—
than the last. Even as the chills are running up your spine you
will be fidgeting to find out what happens next...

“As sinister, dark and twisted as they come… totally hypnotic”
—BooksellerA Dark Dividing

2 spring 2011 Felony & Mayhem
Dear bookseller,
as you probably know, we divide the felony & mayhem line into various categories,
with a little icon (a chess piece, a magnifying glass, etc.) assigned to each. i stole
the idea for this from the old penguin paperbacks—remember the color-coded ones?
The layout of the cover was always the same (extremely simple color-blocks), but the
color varied from one genre to another. mysteries were dark green, i remember, while
“literary” fiction was orange, and biographies were blue. if you had just two minutes to
buy a book from the station kiosk before jumping on your train, the color-coding allowed
you to determine in an instant whether a book in question was the right kind of book for
you. (That distinctive penguin layout, of course, offered a guarantee that it would be a
good book, since—at least in theory—penguin published only good books.)
This past fall, we inaugurated a new category—“Wild card”—and this spring, we are
publishing a second book (A Dark Dividing, p. 7) with a Wild card icon. in truth, “Wild
card” is just a pretentious way of saying that we don’t know how else to categorize
these books. as it happens both A Dark Dividing and The Truth About Unicorns (last
season’s Wild card) have certain, well, creepy elements (though no creepier, i promise,
than you might find in one of barbara Vine’s darker novels), but we have no intention
of making Wild card home to vampires, zombies, and garden-variety undead. it will,
though, remain home to the very distinctly unusual, and we hope you’ll think of it the
next time a customer asks for “something i haven’t read before.”
i promise you, she hasn’t read these.

just about any of the guests at johnny redfield’s party seems to have a good reason to have killed the guest of honor, johnny’s californian aunt who, with her “astral name” and vague pretensions of mysticism, does not exactly blend in the elegant new york atmosphere that surrounds her. and what’s more, no one has a solid alibi. it will take all of henry gamadge’s ingenuity to figure out this closed-room mystery.

julian kestrel, the dandy detective of regency london, is most decidedly a man of the world and, through his valet Dipper, reformed cockney pickpocket, is not without ties to the underworld. one such connection is Dipper’s sister sally, a prostitute who accidentally happens across the possibility of murder while picking her clients’ pockets. since sally is not quite in the position to go to the police with her knowledge, she and julian must chase the clues all through london, from glittery parlors to the dank halls of a home for “fallen women.”

Who’s Likely to Like This?Fans of Georgette Heyer’s Regency novels,
and Anne Perry’s and David Liss’s Victorian series.
J ulian Kestrel is the walking definition of a Regency-era dandy.
He cares about little beyond the perfection of his tailoring,
he lives for the bon mot, and his life has the specific gravity
— and the fleeting charm — of a soap-bubble.
At least, that’s what he’d like you to think. In fact, it rather suits
Kestrel to be perpetually underestimated, particularly when — as
in this instance — his weekend at a glamorous country estate is
spoiled by a dead girl’s body being found in his bed.
If certain elements about Julian Kestrel’s life ring a bell — the
ultra-lightweight persona, for example, or the valet who’s been
plucked from the criminal classes — that’s no accident: We’re
convinced that he’s the true godfather of Peter Wimsey, Albert
Campion, and the other “Gentlemen Sleuths” who began cropping
up 100 years or so after Kestrel first tied his cravat.

the rival QueenscounteSS aShby de la Zouche #2
by FideliS MorGan
The 17th century is limping slowly to a close, but countess ashby de la Zouche and her maid, the faithful alpiew, are dashing around, plying their trade as scandal-mongers to only the finest london papers. happily, scandals—goodness!—are falling in her lap like ripe plums. The best, of late, concern the ladies and gentlemen of the theatrical profession, who are thrilled whenever their names appear in print, and damn the context. but scandal —naughty, de-licious, of little real weight—takes on some gravitas when the countess and alpiew are hired to solve the murder of a popular leading lady. and things get yet more serious when they stumble into a mess of corruption with connections to the very furthest reaches of society.

richard cadogan is at loose ends in oxford, very late at night. charmed by the window display of an old-fashioned toyshop, he is worried to find the door unlocked; surely the owner should be alerted to the potential for danger. and so cadogan slips into the darkened store and up the narrow stairway to the apartment above. but rather than a snoring toyman, he finds a very dead old lady, the marks of murder still livid on her neck. but when cadogan returns with the coppers, the toyshop...has disappeared. it’s midsummer in british columbia, and it’s murderously hot. for the vacationing karl alberg, that becomes more than a metaphor when he discovers a body on the beach, fresh from a fatal plunge into the icy, all-too-appealing waves. back home in the town of sechelt, where alberg is the chief of police, it’s clear that the heat is bringing out the crazies, most recently in the form of a tribe of violent rednecks who are loony enough to make alberg yearn a little for his days as a big-city cop.

There shouldn’t be anything unusual about the death of an elderly widow, until a man appears at her graveside, claiming to be her long-lost son. he’s entitled to shed all the tears he likes, but whether he’s entitled to her substantial fortune is another question. it’s a poser, but one fat andy can grapple with — much more easily than he can deal with the decision on the part of the resolutely boring sgt. Wield to come busting out of the closet.

The golden sprig of a rich and aristocratic family, Timothy is about to marry the girl of his dreams. but when rumors start to circulate about his parentage, the young lady’s father puts the kibosh on the wedding, and shortly thereafter, Timothy becomes the chief suspect first in a housebreaking and then in a suspicious death. mr. campion is happy to look into the problem, but then it gets a good deal worse: somebody, it seems, is willing to go to some very ugly lengths to keep Timothy from finding the answers he needs.

professor murray Watson is rather a sad sack. his family, his career, his affair with a colleague’s wife…even drinking no longer offers much joy. it would be nice to say that his passions have been channeled into scholarship, but the truth is, his research is increasingly feeling like a chore, and a pointless one at that. archie lunan, the poet who drownedthese30yearsagooffaremotestretchofScottishcoast? The more murray learns about lunan, the more he looks like just another drunk with a knack for a nice phrase. and that tragic death? some tedious sense of honor compels murray to go poking around northern scotland, just to finish up the sodding research. but really, was it such a tragedy after all?

Paganini’s GhostGianni and GuaStaFeSte #2
by Paul adaM
it’s the most exciting concert cremona has seen in years: The headliner is a brilliant young russian playing a violin once owned by the 19th-century master nicolo paganini. but the triumphal performance is immediately overshad-owed by the murder of one of its sponsors. solving the murder will require a journey into musical history, and to make that journey, cremona’s police-chief will once more require the assistance of gianni castiglione, an elderly charmer and only mildly larcenous expert in violins.

blotto, twinks, and the ex-King’s daughterblotto, tWinKS #1
by SiMon brett
abouT The book
it’s that glorious period between the two world wars, and the exiled king of mitteleu-ropa is celebrating with a visit to Tawcester Towers, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Tawcester. When the ex-king’s daughter is kidnapped, noblesse obliges blotto, the Duke’s brave and handsome son to drive off to the rescue. sadly, he is rather staggeringly stupid – with a nickname like “blotto,” what could one expect? – but his sister, Twinks, got all the family brains, and she is inclined to be helpful. and in more good news for the purloined princess, blotto’s devoted valet is coming along for the ride. plus, they’ve got a really swell car.
