CYSP ON THE MOVE

CYSP Mentors and a group of our CYSP

students traveled across the state to

Rockford, IL in March. They had an

awesome time learning about al things

science at the Discovery Center and

then spent Saturday giving back to the

community by volunteering at the

Rockford Recycling Center and also

making blankets and toys that were

then donated to the local animal shel-

ter.

The following month our CYSP mentees

traveled to Lake Geneva, WI with their

mentors, where they enjoyed the great

outdoors, visited Yerkes Observatory

and even got to experience a real, work-

ing Wisconsin dairy farm. They were

able to see the inner-workings of the

farm in action and even feed baby

calves by hand!

Spring means lots of fantastic field trips for our students and

this year was no exception. Chicago has so much to offer and

our K-2 kids got a great tour of the city. The Kindergarten

students had a fun-filled day at the Shedd Aquarium where

they got to see the dolphin show and a 3-D movie on sea

creatures! First grade got their science on at the Museum of

Science and Industry and received a crash course in the fu-

ture of energy, the science of storms and even got to flex

their creative muscles in the idea factory. Last, but not least,

second graders learned about all things nature at the Peggy

Notebarte Nature Museum. Each class took their own per-

sonalized course in metamorphosing monarchs and viewed

the amazing butterfly house.

YOUR TRASH IS OUR TREASURE

Concept Schools’ West Re-

gion organized its 4th An-

nual Robotics Camp in

March. The robot-

ics program was designed

for middle & high school

students who intend to pur-

sue a science and engineer-

ing career. The robots built

by students performed

a robotics challenge and

demonstration at the end of

the camp. Our robotics

team did a amazing job in

the Sumo competition and

won 1st place among 10 teams from 7 different schools! Congratulations to team members

Kanari Byndum, Nyla Lacey, Isabel Abarca, Jason Alvarado, Jalen Jefferson, Stephen Ellis Jr,

Jadakis Barajas and Domonick Randle.

ROBOTICS ROCKS AT HSA BELMONT

Each year, in honor of Earth Day and

environmental awareness, Mrs. Khan

organizes our annual Trash to Treasure

contest. The contest invites students to

take traditional discarded trash and

make something new and inventive out

of it. Our students rose to the challenge

and submitted a variety of awesome

items that were truly treasures. In K-2nd

grade, the 1st place winner was Joshua

Antunez and 2nd place went to Janiyah

Williams. In 3rd-5th grade category,

Gianna Padilla won 1st place and Depar-

ion Miller was honored with 2nd place winner is Deparion Miller and Honorable Men-

tion was given to Angelo Buenostro. Last, but not least, in 6th-7th grade, Heavenly McIn-

tyre took home 1st place and 2nd place went to Delilah Rivera.

LOBBY DAY

5

Our fantastic parents Reni-ta Ward, LaTrinia McIn-tyre and Linda Little had an amazing time partici-pating in the Illinois Net-work of Charter Schools’ annual Lobby Day in Springfield, IL. The annual event seeks to raise aware-ness about the importance of charter school with our legislators. We want to thank these women for all of their support and dedi-cation to our school and our students!

For the second year in a row, HSA Belmont stu-dents went above and be-yond for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Fund-raiser. The two-week event, headed by Ms. Graves, en-couraged students to raise money for this great cause by collecting spare change from friends and family. We not only raised $500 more dollars than last year, we also exceeded our goal of $1750 by collecting nearly $2000. All the mon-ey will go towards blood cancer research. A special thanks goes out to Ms. Graves and congratulations to Ms. Dworkin’s class, who raised the most money and won a pasta party from Olive Garden!

HSA Belmont was represented in Springfield by LaTrinia McIntyre, Linda Little and Renita Ward (pictured here with Rep. La Shawn Ford.

Science

Stars In April, a group of our brightest

science and math students traveled

to Cleveland, OH for Concept

Schools’ annual CONSEF Science

and Engineering Fair. Our students

worked extremely hard preparing

their projects and it certainly paid

off. 7th grader Amya Washington

brought home a gold medal, 7th

grader Ray’ven Robinson received a

silver medal and 7th grader Delilah

Rivera received Best of Show in the

category of electronics/engineering.

Delilah (pictured) was also selected

as a candidate for the 2016 Concept

GEMS camp this summer.

Last month, a group of our students

attending the McKinley Park Sci-

ence Camp. They attended sessions

on Presentation, Lab Reports, and

other helpful tips when competing

at the science fair. Our students also

attended the Museum

of Science and Industry with the

other schools to explore the differ-

ent exhibits and then went to the

Willis Tower to face their fears by

standing on the LEDGE and taking

a group photo.

Annual Student Art Show

The annual school-wide HSA Belmont art show, held on March 26th, was a genuine masterpiece!

Artwork from each and every student was on display for parents, students and guests. The visually

stunning pieces wowed onlookers as they walked through the gallery-like set-up. As a special treat,

Ms. Culcowski chose star pieces and framed them for a silent auction. $400 was raised from the sale

of the various truly original artwork. Each student artist received 50% of the sale of their piece and

the remainder went directly back to the art department to fund future projects. A very special thank

you goes out to Ms. Culkowski for organizing the event and inspiring our students to create such

amazing works of art!
