SINCE 1946...Your new Fender bass guitar holds morethan hal a century o musical history.

Fender was ounded in 1946 by ClarenceLeonidas Leo Fender, a Southern Caliornia

inventor and businessman with a talent andpassion or electronics. He started the companyin his small radio repair shop in Fullerton, Cali.,building solid ampliers and lap steel guitarsthat were popular with Western swing bandso the era. A decade later, these modest andearnest beginnings would lead to an explosiveintersection with the birth o rock n roll andthe rst o several Fender golden ages.

With a tireless and constant commitment toimproved sound and design ueled by directand immediate eedback rom proessionaland infuential musicians o the time, Leo and

his sta soon embarked on an extraordinarycreative streak that began in early 1951 with theworlds rst solid-body Spanish-style electricguitar, the Telecaster (and its single-pickupversion, the Esquire). Later that year, Fender

introduced the worlds rst commerciallysuccessul solid-body electric bass guitar, thePrecision Bass, soon ollowed by its companionBassman amp. The Twin Amp appeared in1952 as the rst model in one o the worlds mostacclaimed and enduring guitar amp amilies.

Fender unveiled perhaps the most popularand infuential electric guitar everthe

Stratocasterin 1954. Within a decade, someo rocks greatest artists would start wringingunbelievable sounds rom the instrumentsounds never envisioned by Fender designers,or anyone else or that matter. Other classics

    TUNING

I you dont own an electronic tuner, you maywant to purchase one. It will simpliy many o theollowing procedures. I you already have one, justplug in and turn the basss volume control all the

way up. Pluck either an open string or the 12th retharmonic*, to produce the clearest tone or thetuner. (*A harmonic is a chime-like tone that isproduced by lightly touching the exact mid pointo the string at the twelth ret with your ngertip, and plucking the string with the other hand.)

Note: I you press the string too hard, it will

choke the string and mute the sound. With alittle practice though, youll develop the lighttouch needed to make the harmonic ring out.

    1. CHANGE STRINGSA resh set o strings can breathe new lie into your bass, and something as simple as how you wind the stringsonto the tuning machine posts when changing yourstrings, will determine tuning stability and string tension. Its also a good idea to stretch your strings a little as

you tune to make sure that each string is seated welland snugged down on the tuning machine post. This willsave you some tuning rustration down the road. Justgrab the string in the middle, lightly tug it up and downto remove slack, and then retune. (See your FenderDealer to obtain replacement Fender bass strings.)

First start by pulling each string through the bridge, over the nut and past the corresponding tuning

machine post, with enough extra length to allow aminimum o three winds around it. Mark that pointon the string. With wire cutters, crimp the stringover at a 45-degree angle one inch beore the mark, then clip o the excess at the mark, (Figure A).

Next, place the end o the string all the waydown in the hole in the center o the tuningmachine post and bend the string over in theslot. Wind the tuning key to tighten the string topitch while holding the loose end o the string

in place with your other hand, (Figure B).Make sure that the string does not overlapitsel and is wound rom the top down to thebase o the tuning machine shat, to insure thestring is seated properly on the nut with themost acute break angle possible, (Figure C).

    2. CHANGE BATTERIESFender oers basses with passive electronics(no batteries) and basses with active(battery-powered) preamps. Depending onthe instrument, your active bass may haveeither a 9-volt (one-battery) system, or

an 18-volt (two-battery) system. Visit theKnowledge Base in the Support section owww.ender.com, where the service diagramslink presents detailed inormation on morethan 250 Fender instrument models.

Typical battery lie or both systems isapproximately 600 hours o playing time. All Fender basses with active preamps are

equipped with switching jacks that engage thebattery when a cable is plugged into the jack.To maximize battery lie, unplug your cable romthe bass when not playing the instrument. Asbatteries lose power, the voltage supplied tothe preamp will drop, resulting in distortion and

unwanted noise that indicate that the batteriesmust be changed (note that active basseswithout an active/passive switch will not operatein passive mode when the batteries are dead). For basses with two-bat tery 18-volt preamps,

always replace both batteries at the same time,as mismatched voltages may adversely aectthe perormance o the preamp. It is a good ideato use the same brand o battery consistently.

The truss rod is the ingenious unseen deviceinside the neck that counteracts the bending orcecaused by string tension. An ideally adjustedneck will have a moderate amount o relie(curvature) in it to accommodate the vibrating

strings. The actory specication or neck relieon Fender bass guitars is between .012 and.014, measured between the bottom o thestring and the top o the ret, at the 7th ret.

To adjust the truss rod, asten a capo to the rstret. I you are adjusting a our-string bass, retthe E string at the last ret; i you are adjustinga ve- or six-string bass, ret the B string at thelast ret). Then measure rom the bottom o the

string to the top o the 7th ret using the eelergaugethe gap should be between .012 and.014. When you view the neck by sighting downit rom the body end toward the headstock, youcan see whether the neck is straight or bowed.

I the truss rod needs adjustment, detunethe strings rst to relieve neck tension, andremember to retune to pitch beore measuringagain. To adjust the truss rod, use either a largePhillips or fathead screwdriver (or most vintage

style basses), or the hex wrench suppliedwith your bass (or modern basses). Note thator vintage-style basses with the truss rodadjustment at the neck heel, you must removethe strings and loosen the neck mountingscrews and/or remove the pickguard to gainaccess to the truss rod adjustment nut. I theneck curvature is too concave, turn the truss rodadjustment nut clockwise. I the neck curvatureis too convex, turn the truss rod adjustment

nut counterclockwise. Check your tuning; thencheck the gap again with the eeler gauge.I you meet excessive truss rod resistance or iyoure not comortable adjusting it yoursel, youcan always take your guitar to your AuthorizedFender Service Center.

String height is more about personal preerenceand playing style than a pre-determined spec.Check your tuning rst, then use a 6 ruler tomeasure the distance between the bottom oeach string and the top o the 17th ret. That

distance should be approximately 6/64, whichis Fenders recommended spec on both thebass and treble sides. Adjust each bridge saddleaccordingly, and keep in mind that string heightcan be set to whatever eels right or you.

    5. SET INTONATIONYou can easily set your bass guitars basicintonation. Plug into your tuner and tune a stringto pitch using the 12th-ret harmonic. Thenret the string at the 12th ret and comparethat pitch to the 12th-ret harmonic pitch.

I the pitch o the harmonic and the pitch othe retted note agree, the string is properlyintonated and no adjustment is necessary. Ithe two pitches disagree, an adjustment mustbe made, using either a Phillips screwdriver ora hex wrench, depending on the bridge type.

I the retted note is sharper (higher in pitchrelative to the harmonic), the string must be

lengthened until both pitches agree. To dothis, turn the saddle length adjustment screwclockwise, moving the saddle toward the backo the bridge, until the harmonic and the retted

Your Fender bass guitar is preciselycrated to give you years o satisaction andenjoyment. Occasional routine maintenancewill go a long way toward keeping it looking, sounding and playing great or many years.Several helpul tips are listed here:

Keep it clean. Dirt, dust, sweat, skin oil, smokeand other pollutants can prematurely age yourbasss nish and hardware. Wipe the strings, neckand bridge oten with a lint-ree cloth regularly.Use Fender-approved polish on the nishedsuraces, and wipe metal parts clean with asot, dry polishing cloth (visit the Accessoriessection o ender.com or recommendations).

Oil the fngerboard. The natural oils in unnishedrosewood, ebony and pau erro ngerboardscan dry out. Keep these ngerboards beautiulby periodically hydrating them with lemon oil, boiled linseed oil or other non silicone-based

wood/urniture oil. Apply with a lint-reecloth, rub in, let soak, wipe o excess andlet dry. And rememberno oil on nishedsuraces (including maple ngerboards).

Tighten the strap buttons. They doloosen sometimes. Use a standardPhillips head screwdriver to periodicallycheck and tighten strap buttons.

Set up and adjust. Familiarize yourselwith the setup and adjustment proceduresin this manual and on www.ender.com,or visit your Authorized Fender ServiceCenter or routine seasonal adjustments.

Avoid climate extremes wheneverpossible. Extremes in temperature andhumidity can damage your bass. I suchexposure cant be helped, however, loosenthe strings to minimize damage, and let a
