Match background
Fenerbahçe SK finished their 2004/05 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 3-0 home win against Manchester United FC, and will look for similar form in their first home match this season following their 3-1 defeat at AC Milan on Matchday 1. The Turkish champions play host to PSV Eindhoven, who opened with a 1-0 home win against FC Schalke 04 as the Dutch champions aim to progress from the group stage for the second successive season.
One previous meeting: For the previous meeting between the clubs in UEFA competition, the clock has to go back 27 years, to September 1978 in the first round of the 1978/79 European Champion Clubs' Cup. The first leg was staged in Istanbul with Fenerbahçe winning 2-1 after first-half goals by Rasit Çetiner and Emin Ilhan, Ernestus Brandts responding for PSV.
But the second leg saw PSV run away with the tie. Willy van der Kuijlen scored four times, Gerrie Deijkers added two more, and Fenerbahçe were left with Rasit's consolation goal as PSV won 6-1 and 7-3 on aggregate. But PSV, the UEFA Cup holders, were then beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Rangers FC in the next round.
One home win in four: The win against PSV in 1978 remains the only home success in four ties against Dutch opponents for Fenerbahçe, and the only time the Turkish side have managed to score.
The defunct DWS Amsterdam FC won their preliminary-round tie in the 1964/65 Champion Clubs' Cup with a 3-1 home win, followed by a 1-0 success in Turkey. AFC Ajax then won both legs 2-0 against Fenerbahçe in their 1968/69 Champion Clubs' Cup second-round tie, while Feyenoord qualified for the first group stage of the 2002/03 Champions League with a 1-0 home win followed by a 2-0 victory in Istanbul in the third qualifying round.
No wins from Turkish trips: Similarly PSV have failed to win any of their four matches to date in Istanbul. Their 1978 defeat was followed by a 2-0 loss at Galatasaray SK in the first round of the 1987/88 Champion Clubs' Cup, but the Dutch did have the cushion of a 3-0 home first-leg win, and eventually went on to win the trophy.
One draw from four away matches: In the first round of the 1991/92 Champion Clubs' Cup, PSV drew at Besiktas JK 1-1, but won 2-1 at the Philips stadium to progress again. PSV were then grouped with Galatasaray SK in the first group stage of the 2001/02 Champions League, and both won their home games, 3-1 to PSV, and 2-0 to Galatasaray, to leave PSV with a record of a draw and three losses in their previous travels to Istanbul.
MILESTONES
Goalscoring run: Fenerbahçe have scored in their last seven Champions League games, after scoring in all six group games last season.
Five wins from 19 matches: After their loss at Milan on the opening match of this season, Fenerbahçe have lost 13 of their 19 Champions League games with five wins and a draw.
Three home wins from nine: Fenerbahçe have won three of their nine home games, and in all of those wins

goalkeeper Rüstü Reçber kept clean sheets - the only times a shutout has been registered by Fenerbahçe in home games.
Biggest victory: The last home game, in the 2004/05 group stage, produced the biggest win for Fenerbahçe in the competition – a 3-0 success against Manchester United FC.
First Turkish hat-trick: In the win against United, Tuncay Sanli scored a hat-trick, the first by a Turkish player in the competition.
No goalless draws: Fenerbahçe have never been involved in a 0-0 draw, and their only draw was in their first-ever match in the competition against SK Rapid Wien (1-1) in September 1996.
Tenth campaign: This is the tenth season for PSV in the UEFA Champions League, along with six other clubs, and one behind the leaders Manchester United and FC Porto.
Beaten last time away: PSV lost their last away game in the competition, their first leg of the semi-final at Milan by 2-0, but had won at AS Monaco FC 2-0 in the first knockout round and drawn 1-1 at Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-final.
Six European semi-finals: Last season was the sixth semi-final for PSV but the first since 1988 when they won the Champion Clubs' Cup. Prior to 2004/05, they had twice reached the last four of both the Champion Clubs' Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and played in one UEFA Cup semi-final.
First time past group stage: Last season, PSV made it through to the first knockout round for the first time in nine attempts after finishing runners-up to Arsenal FC in the group stage. In 1997/98, PSV finished second to FC Dynamo Kyiv but the rules at the time allowed only the six group winners and the best two runners-up to progress. PSV were one of the six clubs whose record in finishing second denied them a place in the last eight.
Involved on opening night: PSV were one of the eight clubs who took part in the first Champions League group stage when it began in November 1992. The eight were Olympique de Marseille, Rangers FC, Club Brugge KV and CSKA Moskva in Group A whilst Milan, IFK Göteborg, Porto and PSV all contested Group B.

Nationality: ESP
Date of birth: 16.04.1965
Manuel Mejuto González had the honour of refereeing the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League final between AC Milan and Liverpool FC.
Career: He was born in La Felguera in Asturias on 16 April 1965, and is still based in the place of his birth. 2000/01: UEFA’s first major call for Mejuto came in 2000, when he was part of the UEFA European Championship final-round refereeing team in Germany, and his career was given a tremendous boost the following year with his appointment by FIFA for the World Youth Championship in Argentina. The Spaniard’s efforts at the championship was considered good enough for him to be put in charge of the final between Argentina and Ghana in Buenos Aires. He also officiated at the South American Under-20 Championship in Ecuador in the same year.
2003/04: Since then, Mejuto has remained in the refereeing limelight with a series of high-ranking appointments, including the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying play-off between Russia and Wales in Moscow, and the tough Champions League derby quarter-final between London rivals Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC in March. Mejuto officiated at seven matches in the Champions League, one match in the UEFA Cup and two fixtures in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying round. His season then culminated with a trip to the EURO 2004™ finals in Portugal where he refereed two group matches.
2004/05: Last season, Mejuto earned the major honour of taking charge of the Champions League final between Liverpool FC and AC Milan in Istanbul - his eighth Champions League assignment of the season. The Spaniard also refereed four FIFA World Cup qualifiers in a hectic campaign.

Maldini achieves Italy milestone(Sunday, 25 September 2005)
Domestic News
Paolo Maldini broke Dino Zoff's Serie A appearance record against Treviso FC, his 571st match ending in victory. There were also wins for Group E's other contenders, with PSV Eindhoven and FC Schalke 04 enjoying welcome returns to form, while Fenerbahçe SK left it late.
FC Schalke 04 2-0 Hannover 96
Schalke ended a run of five games without a win with victory over Hannover on Saturday. The hosts dominated but had to wait until just before the hour to make the breakthrough, Brazilian playmaker Lincoln rising highest to power in Mladen Krstajić's pinpoint cross. Lincoln missed from the penalty spot three minutes later but Kevin Kuranyi sealed the points with another header on 66 minutes.
"We haven't been in form in recent weeks but the players gave the right answer on the field today," said Schalke managing director Rudi Assauer. "It was a very good display and made up for disappointing performances in the first few games. We dominated throughout and earned a welldeserved win."
Søren Larsen was finally handed his first start for the club after scoring three times in six substitute appearances, including the equaliser at 1. FC Nürnberg which salvaged a share of the spoils in midweek. Coach Ralf Rangnick's hand was forced by a back injury to his other Danish striker, Ebbe Sand, but he could return on Wednesday. Marco van Hoogdalem (hip), Mimoun Azaouagh, Christian Pander, Gerald Asamoah (all knee), Simon Cziommer and Tim Hoogland (both ankle) are all out.
Treviso FC 02 AC Milan
Goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Alberto Gilardino earned Milan a second successive 20 win in Maldini's recordbreaking 571st Serie A appearance overtaking Zoff but basement side Treviso made things uncomfortable for the Rossoneri. Milan went into the game on the back of an identical victory against S.S. Lazio on Wednesday, Kaká and Shevchenko scoring, and the latter was again on target on Sunday, converting a 44thminute penalty for his 150th Milan goal.
Until then, the visitors had spent much of the match on the back foot, and it was only when Gilardino doubled the lead with 17 minutes remaining that the points finally looked safe. The former Parma FC forward was back in the team as a replacement for Christian Vieri, who was rested alongside Cafu, Kakhaber Kaladze and Johann Vogel, while coach Carlo Ancelotti was also without Massimo Ambrosini (muscle injury) and longterm absentee Marek Jankulovski (leg).
Ancelotti said: "We didn't play well in the first half and Treviso were strong. Fortunately, we managed to open the scoring and the match became much easier in the second half. Treviso continued to create problems but we improved a lot and deserved to double our advantage. We are still lacking fluency and are not as solid at the back as we should be."
Fenerbahçe SK 30 Kayserispor
Fenerbahçe earned a comfortablelooking victory at home to Kayserispor but were made to work for their points by the season's surprise package in the Turkish Superleague. The hosts were held until the 73rd minute when Alex finally broke the deadlock with a freekick, and that opened the floodgates at the Sükrü Saraçoglu stadium, with Márcio Nobre adding a second on 84 minutes before Nicolas Anelka gave the scoreline a onesided appearance in added time.
Coach Christoph Daum named the same starting XI that lined up against Milan and Besiktas JK (21) the previous Sunday, but admitted it was his replacements that earned the points against Kayserispor. "We failed to pressurise our opponents in the first half and Volkan Demirel made some heroic saves. I introduced Nobre and Mehmet Yozgatli in the second half and they proved pivotal, changing the course of the game."
Striker Zafer Biryol is still sidelined, while Deniz Bariş has had his playing licence suspended by the Turkish Football Association after a tribunal this week. The defender's former employers Gençlerbirligi SK's demand

that he pay €1m after breaking a clause in his contract was upheld and Bariş cannot play until he pays.
PSV Eindhoven 20 RBC Roosendaal
A makeshift PSV team earned a moraleboosting success at home to Roosendaal to close the gap on the leading trio in the Netherlands. Guus Hiddink's side have been plagued by injuries in recent weeks, goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes the latest addition to a congested medical room with a groin injury. He was replaced by Edwin Zoetebier on Saturday but the custodian was rarely tested as goals from Timmy Simons and Jefferson Farfán at the start of each half sealed a comfortable victory.
The win was achieved without Mika Väyrynen (ankle), Michael Ball (knee ligament), Gerald Sibon (neck), Robert (buttock), Michael Reiziger (hip), Alex and John de Jong (both knee), while striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink started on the bench as a precaution. There was more bad news for Hiddink, however, when midfielder Ibrahim Afellay limped off with a groin problem in the second half.
"Afellay will undergo tests in the next couple of days it's not clear how serious it is right now," Hiddink said after the match. "The team played well in the first half, and it was a pity we weren't rewarded with one or two more goals. We soon made it 20 in the second half, and should have gone on to increase our lead but failed to do so."
Fenerbahçe SK earned a stunning lastgasp derby win at Besiktas JK but UEFA Champions League Group E challengers AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven both suffered rare defeats on their travels while FC Schalke 04 were held at home.
FC Schalke 04 11 Hertha BSC Berlin
Schalke fell further off the pace in the Bundesliga after being held to a goalless draw by tenman Hertha in Gelsenkirchen. Ralf Rangnick's side needed to win to keep pace with league leaders FC Bayern München, and their chances looked to have been augmented when the visitors had Gilberto sent off midway through the first half. But they encountered Hertha goalkeeper Christian Fiedler in inspired form and were held to their third successive Bundesliga draw.
Schalke coach Rangnick went into the match without longterm absentees Marco van Hoogdalem (hip), Tim Hoogland (ankle), Mimoun Azaouagh and Christian Pander (both knee). Instead he handed new Brazilian signing Rafinha his first start, although neither he nor his teammates could find the net and Schalke now lie six points adrift of Bayern after just five matches.
"We wanted to win the game and we played strongly in the first 30 minutes," Rangnick said. "But after Gilberto had been sent off Hertha defended brilliantly, although at the end we were unlucky not to score the winning goal. However, my players showed good fight after our disappointing [10 defeat by PSV] in Eindhoven."
UC Sampdoria 21 AC Milan
Alberto Gilardino's first competitive strike for Milan was not enough to propel the side to victory as Sampdoria came from behind to earn a battling home win. The match, which saw Paolo Maldini equal Dino Zoff's record of 570 Serie A games, started on a very different note as Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko combined to create a superb strike by Gilardino on 18 minutes. But the UEFA Cup contenders responded well and goals from Emiliano Bonazzoli and Max Tonetto earned them the points.
Although only longterm absentee Filippo Inzaghi (ankle) and Marek Jankulovski (foot) were unavailable, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti opted to field a weakened side for the game. Alessandro Nesta as Massimo Ambrosini dropped to the substitute's bench, as Dutch defender Jaap Stam and Clarence Seedorf returned to the starting XI.
Ancelotti admitted that it was in defence that his side struggled: "We played well in the first half but Sampdoria

were luckier. We will be working to fix our defensive problems. It's a shame because we played fairly well we showed off the aggressiveness and commitment we lacked recently. We were determined but just a bit unlucky."
Besiktas JK 12 Fenerbahçe SK
Tuncay Şanlı scored a lastgasp winner as Fenerbahçe edged a thrilling Istanbul derby against Besiktas to keep the pressure on Galatasaray SK at the Turkish Superleague summit. The visitors looked to be on course for victory when on 18 minutes, French striker Nicolas Anelka collected a fine pass from Ghanaian Stephen Appiah who had been declared fit to play just hours before the game – and struck a blistering shot from an acute angle.
Anelka won a penalty in the second half but with the chance to seal victory, Brazilian substitute Márcio Nobre missed the target. Nobre's compatriot Kleberson looked to have made him pay for that miss when his sublime 35metre freekick arced in to level the scores on 90 minutes but there was still time for Nobre to atone for his mistake, playing a clever onetwo with Tuncay, who finished with aplomb.
Tuncay was carried off on a stretcher after the goal but the injury is not thought to be serious and did not take the gloss off the match for teammate Anelka: "I'm satisfied with my own performance but it is even better when the team are playing well too. We have the quality and power to reach our targets in both the league and the Champions League."
FC Groningen 10 PSV Eindhoven
PSV suffered their first defeat of the season at the Oosterpark stadium as Yuri Cornelisse's stunning strike took goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes by surprise on the stroke of halftime. The visitors fought back, and Jefferson Farfán and Robert both missed good chances as PSV suffered their first away defeat for 23 games, falling two short of AFC Ajax's Dutch record.
The result leaves the Eredivisie champions fully five points off the pace set by leaders AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord and RKC Waalwijk. The match could also have a more lasting effect on PSV's season after defenders Michael Reiziger (thigh) and Michael Ball (groin) both had their afternoon's work cut short. The pair will undergo further examination but are likely to join Mika Väyrynen (ankle), Alex and John de Jong (both knee) on the sidelines.
Nevertheless, PSV coach Guus Hiddink's disappointment was not with his defence but rather his attack. "The match seemed a typical 00 game, and was decided by a onceinalifetime shot from Cornelisse. We were not able to counter that, and nor were we able to create any danger. After the euphoria of last season I already said we have to be realistic and that we will have a punch on the nose every now and then. But the most disappointing thing is that we did not create anything."

Competition OverviewCompetition overview
How the UEFA Champions League works…
The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992.
Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for current champions Liverpool FC.
The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.
Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round-robin group matches as well as its traditional knockout format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.
A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals.
If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knockout round contest the final, held as a single match in May.
The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.
The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.
An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knockout stage.

Higher Champions League revenue
Record-breaking night for uefa.com
Notices
UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m (CHF930m) - higher than the revenue obtained last season.
Use within European football Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. The net amount of €430m (€453m in revenue less €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations) available to the clubs will be split into a fixed amount of €206m – starting bonuses, performance bonuses, match bonuses), and €206m for the so-called TV market pool (distributed proportionally to the income from the TV contracts of each country). A surplus of €18.6m is expected for this year’s competition.
Club payments Each of the 32 clubs involved in the Champions League group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m. In addition, they will receive a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage.
Winners' reward The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m.
Total minimum amount This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.
Solidarity amounts Solidarity payments to European associations, leagues and clubs are expected to total around €75m. Some €22.5m will go to European leagues represented in the Champions League, while between €6.4m and €11.6m will be distributed among the European leagues not represented in the competition. The solidarity contributions are, among other things, intended for investment in club youth development programmes.
The official UEFA website, uefa.com, kicked off the UEFA Champions League group stage with a record of its own, registering 11.7 million page views and 682,000 visits, as the competition got under way on 13 September.
Beating last season These figures beat the totals set on last season's opening night on 14 September 2004 when uefa.com received 8.4 million page impressions and 416,000 unique visits. Those totals have been eclipsed with increases of 39 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.
Latest results and statistics The website has been redesigned for the 2005/06 campaign, to provide a growing global audience of football fans with the latest live match results and statistics, plus enhanced multimedia coverage of European football. The site covers news from the 52 UEFA national football associations and 16 UEFA competitions, all reported in nine languages, including Russian, Japanese and Korean, as well as English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
Video footage uefa.com has a wealth of video footage available and as a result of the redesign, an embedded media player on the homepage specifically targets the broadband market, offering users a taster of the unique uefa.com Action video product.

Broadband users represent more than 80 per cent of the current uefa.com user base. This compares with just 54 per cent of users accessing via broadband in 2001 when the site was launched.
Enhanced online resource UEFA Media Technologies CEO, Alexandre Fourtoy, explained: "We are delighted to be offering supporters of European football throughout the world a vastly enhanced online resource for the 2005/06 season and beyond. All the additional elements that have been added to uefa.com in the past four years are now better integrated to make the site easier for our visitors to use. We believe that our strategy of tailoring content to the broadband market has been successful, and our recent redesign is a continuation of that pattern."
Steady development Europe's football website has evolved steadily since its initial launch in 2001, and the new design builds on the success of the official UEFA EURO 2004™ site. uefa.com received more than 75 million visits and served over 700 million page views in the last season, and on average, the site welcomes more than two million new visitors every month.
Top nations The list of top 15 nations from which football fans accessed uefa.com in the last 12 months is a mark of the site's global appeal - Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Turkey and the United States. These 15 head a total of 220 nations from which users accessed the site in the last year.
