2012 president’s corner...
I would like to take a moment and extend a sincere ―Thank You‖ to the Chamber Staff, the dedicated volunteers and all of the attendees who made our Annual Dinner Auction a big success. This one event drives a large portion of our annual operating budget for the year. Your individual commitment continues to make the Chamber more effective in providing the services and tools that your business needs. I would like to encourage each of you to download our Fenton Chamber App to your smartphones. Now the Fenton Chamber Monthly Calendar is just a click away and from the palm of your hand. Check it out! We are now in the middle of the first trimester of our individual business plan. Are you comparing your first quarter 2012 goals to your YTD actual results? Are you achieving the business goals you established for the Fenton Chamber within your business? Have you attended that Chamber Luncheon you had on the calendar? Did you make the last Ribbon Cutting we had at Mercy Clinic OBGYN or the 45th birthday celebration for Circle Of Concern? Check out all of the upcoming events and sign up for one today! Often we put together a very detailed strategic business plan and include new initiatives and business networking opportunities. I would encourage each of you to step outside your comfort zone and utilize the Fenton Chamber as your business partner. It has often been said, ―One cannot expect a different result if one continues with the same activity‖. Your Chamber is here to help. Check it out! The Fenton Chamber’s ChamberNation software is available to every member through the Website. This incredible system and the tools it provides allows you to manage your company’s exposure within the Fenton Chamber Website from your own computer, without adding any additional local software. The power that lies within this specific software is still an untapped resource to many of our members. If you have not taken advantage of this business tool, do so today by contacting the Chamber Office staff! As I close, I would encourage each of to review your very own 2012 Business Plan. What role will your Fenton Chamber Membership and ChamberNation software play in the growth of your business this year? Are you maximizing your membership? All My Best, Dale E. Roethemeyer Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce—President Edward Jones—Financial Advisor

Circle of Concern Celebrates 45 Years of Service with Bash!
On Thursday, March 1, 2012 Circle of Concern hosted its annual Birthday Bash at the charity’s center in Valley Park. The event included tours of Circle’s facility, cake and ice cream and balloons for the kids, courtesy of SAMMY J Balloon Creations.
Circle collected toys, wrapping paper, gift cards, birthday party supplies and cake mixes for the Birthday Club which provides wrapped presents and ―parties in a bag‖ to hundreds of kids each year.
Today, Circle’s pantry helps feed 25,000 people each year and assists hundreds of struggling families through a variety of programs.

There Is No Place Like Home Equity Article written by: Angela Reynolds, Commerce Bank Small Business Specialist, Fenton Banking Center
Dorothy was right…there is no place like home, and she did not even know about all the advantages your home may bring you. In fact, the equity in your home can be an untapped source of funds. And, with interest rates still low, homeowners continue to view home equity as a very attractive way to borrow money and consolidate debt. So, if you own your home and could use the extra money, now may be the ideal time to put the equity in your home to work for you.
Home improvement and debt consolidation remain the top uses for home equity loans. Whether you are adding on that new family room, putting in a pool, or consolidating high-interest credit card debt, a low interest, tax-advantaged* home equity loan or line of credit may make economic sense.
Before pursuing a home equity loan, carefully evaluate your ability to repay. For small or low priority purchases, a home equity loan is not likely to be the best option. If you decide to take advantage of a home equity loan, a lender can help you choose the type of home equity loan that is right for you.
Using the equity in your home can be a disciplined form of borrowing – if you carefully evaluate the options and make informed decisions. Whether you are financing a college education, building an addition to your home, or consolidating debt, the current low interest rates and potential tax benefits may make a home equity loan an appealing option.
*Consult your tax advisor regarding the deductibility of interest.

Effective Workplace Communication More A Necessity Than Ever—Part 2 from February Fenton Focus
Article written by David Burlis - Owner, Express Employment Professionals
The barrage of emails workers receive is the second most (behind unproductive meetings which was featured last month) frustrating time
consuming aspect of Communication. There is no doubt that emails are one of the most effective ways of communicating with fellow
employees, but it can also be one of the worst ways to make sure your message is clearly communicated. If your message is five sentences
or less, an email is probably the best way to convey the message. If not, maybe a face-to-face meeting would be a more effective way to
communicate what you need to say. If you’re the leader of a team of employees, it’s important to understand how much time your emails
add to your employee’s workday. When you do send out emails, make sure the information is clearly stated, valuable to the recipients, and
concise. Effectively communicating through email is possible but it takes work and will most likely change the normal routine at your
business.
Meetings and emails are the two most used forms of workplace communication, but we also spend a lot of time communicating with non-
verbal signals. Non-verbal signals are usually misunderstood and often lead to tension in the office, so it’s important to be aware of
common nonverbal mistakes and how to avoid them. When you’re speaking with co-workers and team members, be aware of your arm
positioning, avoiding crossed arms as it sends a defensive message. A simple smile can also go a long way in starting the day off right, so
remember that the next time you come into the office with your mind already racing through the day’s to-do list. Eye contact is another
easy-to-fix form of nonverbal communication that leaders often overlook. Keep eye contact during conversations. This will show interest
and genuine attentiveness to the speaker, and while speaking, allow your focus to shift occasionally from person to person so the whole
team feels included in the discussion.
Effective communication affects every aspect of the workplace, both positively and negatively, so making it a priority in 2012 should be
one of your first steps to a great new year at work. Being a better communicator will show its impact in productivity and in office morale.
In a Express Hiring Trends Survey from 2011, company leaders noticed a 42 percent drop in morale. Better run meetings, fewer and more
concise emails, and a feeling of reassurance from their leader will assuredly help employees’ morale, and happier employees will lead to
more growth and success in 2012.
