j&uttBter, GLATN'0 FERMOY, WITH THE PARISHES OE BALLYHOOLY, CLONDULANE, LITTER AND NEIGHBOURHOODS. 1? •T ERMOY, a market and pnst town and parish, in the barony of Condons and Clangibbon, county of Cork, is 134 miles s."W. from Dublin, 38 s.E. from Limerick, and 23 N.E. from Cork, finely situated on the Blackwater river, in the centre of an extensive and exceedingly fertile agricultural district. This place is said to have originated in the foundation of a Cistercian abbey by the family of the Roches, in the beginning of the twelfth century. In 1796, when the late John Anderson became its possessor, by pur- chase, it consisted of only a few mud cabins and the ruins of the old abbey; hut in a few years, by the exertions of the enterprising and; spirited owner, it became not only one of the prettiest inland towns in Ireland, but, during his proprietorship, one of consi- derable manufacture — and industry, comfort and respectability were soon apparent. In consequence of the unfortunate failure of Mr. Anderson's bank, tho place subsequently became the property of Sir Robert Abercromby, Hart., •who is highly respected as a landlord, albeit, it is to be regretted a non-resident. The improvements in the town, however, progress satisfactorily uuder the intelligent superintendence of Sir Robert's agent, Matthias C. llindley, Esq. Several handsome houses have been built—two in the Elizabethan style of architecture, in Abereromby- place, are really elegant; and near the same site Frederick Bell, Esq. occupies a beautiful residence. The site, too, of an extensive brewery, has been appropriated to the erection of comfortable dwellings, shops and warehouses. The bridge of seven arches, connecting the northern and southern portions of the town, is a noble structure, and was opened in 1865. The trade of Fermoy isnow almost entirely of a local and retail character, if we except the Fermoy corn mills, which do a considerable trade. The hotel accommodation is first class, principal among which we may mention Mr. Sheriffs' Royal Hotel, the Queen's, and the Bridge Hotel. The National Bank of Ireland, the Provincial Bank, and the Munster Bank, have branches here, and there is a savings' bank and a loan fund. The government of the town is confided chiefly to the county and resident magis- tracy. General sessions of the peace are held twice a year, and petty sessions once every fortnight, in tho court house, a well-arranged buildihg, at the east end of the town. The barracks are remarkably commo- dious; a portion of the new barrack has been converted into a workhouse. There are four places of publio worship, namely: the Episcopal church, erected in 1802; the Roman Catholic chapel in 1811; the Methodist chapel in 1820, and that for Presbyterians in 1837, The church is rather an elegant structure, with a square tower, surmounted hy a spire. The late Mr. Anderson gave the site for this church, and nearly £3,000 towards its erection. The Roman Catholic chapel is likewise a handsome building. The Methodist and Presby- terian chapel are small, but neat buildings. Tho late Rev. Dr. William Adair endowed a school for teach- ing the useful branches of education : there is also a school for females attached, superintended by the ladies of the town. There are national and infants schools, and several private academies. A handsome convent for nuns of the order of Presentation is situated on the brow of a hill, to the south of the town, and consists of a centre and two wings : in one of the latter is a chapel, in the other a school-house for girls, who aro carefully and gratuitously instructed by the ladies of the establishment. A handsome pre- paratory college has also been recently erected near to the Catholic chapsl. The envrions of Fermoy abound with charming scenery, and numerous villas and man- sions of tho opulent. The market is held on Saturday. Fairs, Juno 21st, August 20th, and November 7th. The population of the parish in 1851, 6,750, and tho town 5,844 of that number. Population of the town in 1861, 8,705 ; and of the parish, 9,S37. BAIXYHOOLY is a neat well-built village, in tho parish of .its name, barony of Fermoy, on the left bank of tho Blackwatcr, four miles of Fermoy, and on tho main road from that town to Mallow, joining the domain of the Earl of Listowel, to whom tho village belongs. The parish church, the remains of a former one, and an ancient castle of the Roches, crown tho summit of a rock immediately over tho river, and across which was a handsome eut-stone bridge, with several arches, but it was entirely car- ried away, like many others in this county, by the flood which occurred on tho night of the 3rd Novem- ber, 1853; this bridge has, however, been replaced by a substantial wooden one. In tho villago is a neat j Episcopal church, built a short time ago, a Roman Catholic chapel, a national school, a dispensary, and police barracks. Population iu 1851 was 1,520, and the village 419 of that number. The population of the parish in 1801 was 1,129, the village containing 267 of that number. CLONDULAHE, a parish and small village in the barony of Condons and Clangibbon, contains a parish church, which is a small neat building, situated between ttvo and three miles from Fermoy. At GLANDULANE are t h e extensive flour mills he- longing to Mr. Hallinan. Population of tho parish in 1851, 986; and in 1861, 990, tho village of Clondulane containing 124 of the latter number. LITIEU, or Castlehyde parish, which lies contiguous to that of Fermoy, is intersected hy the Blackwater river, by which it is divided into two nearly equal parts. The principal seat is Castlehyde, beautifully situated on the northern banks of the Blackwater, in the midst of a highly picturesque and richly-wooded demesne, extending on both sides of the river : and within its precincts are the ivied ruins of tho ancient castle, which, at a former period, gave to the parish its name. The church of the parish is a small, but neat building. The population of tho parish in 1851, 1,071, and in 1861, 1,1)46. Ox FETHARD,

"R FETIIAIW-TIP,—the adjunct, a contraction for Tipperary, to distinguish it from the Fethard in the county of Wexford, is a market town and parish, in the harony of Mi'ldlethird, county of Tipperary, 99 miles s.w. from Dublin, 33 N.W. from Waterford, 49 s.E. by E. from Limerick, G1 N.E. from Cork, 10 s. from Cashel, 8J N. from Clonmel, and about the same distance s. from Killenaule. The town, which is small and irregularly built, is situated in a fertile part of the country, and previous to the union was a parlia-mentary borough, returning two members to the Irish parliament. Though now, in point of siz-?, but an inconsiderable town, with a steadily decreasing population, it was- formerly one of consequence and great strength—being encircled hy walls, and the four entrances into the town were guarded hy gates and towers, three of which are still standing. The garrison stood a siege in the time of Cromwell, and the arti-cles of treaty and capitulation are now in the posses-sion of Thomas Barton, Esq., of Grove, to whom the principal part of the place belongs. There is no pro-minent branch of business carried on here; the country

property. Petty sessions are held once a fortnight in an ancient building in the Main-street.

The parish church of the Holy Trinity is old, hut commodious and handsome. It comprises the remains ing aisle of an ancient structure, of which the chancel is in ruins; it is in tho English decorated style, with a venerable tower. The Roman Catholic chapel of tho Holy Trinity is a spacious modern structure. Tho beautiful old abbey, formerly belonging to the Augus tinian friars, has been fitted up as a chapel; lately a new front to it has been completed, and it now pre-sents a handsomeappcarauce. The Presbyterians havo also a place of worship. The Protestant parish school-house is a neat building, having two airy school-rooms, one each for boys and girls, with comfortable apart-ments for the master. A national school for children of both sexes, in Chapel-lane, and a valuable dispen-sary, are the other principal cliaiita'ole institution^. The market, which is held on Saturday, is not so well attended as might he expected from the fertility of tho surrounding country. The chartered fairs are April 30 h, the Friday next before Trinity Sunday, Septern-

around being now used chiefly for grazing purposes, j her 7th, and November 21st. There aro likewise fai i s Many persons are employed in the making of nails. Th'j The town was formerly governed by a regular corpo-! parish of Fethard contained in 1851, 3,080 inhabitants, ration embodied by a charter of James I . ; it is now,; and the town 2,707 of that number; in 1801 the parish under the late Municipal Act, governed by a body of contained 2,533, aud the town 2,303. commissioneis, who are possessed of the c rporatc 1

K A N T U R K i S a market town, partly in the parish of EILERI^ hut chiefly in that of CLONFERT, barony of Duhallow, county of Cork, 163 miles s."w. from Dublin, 24 N.w. from Cork, 23 N. from Macroom, 1G s.w. from Done-raile, and 10 w. from Mallow, seated on the hanks of

market for the corn, which they were previously obliged to send to Cork. At BANTEER, three miles from Ivanturk, there is a station upon tho Killarney Junction of the Dublin and Cork line. A branch of the National Bank of Ireland is established here. The

the Allua and Dallua, whose streams flow through tho ! sessions-house and bridewell are substantial and coin-town. Kanturk, which is irregularly built, consists of modious buildings; the former has a handsome front several small streets, chicfly diverging from the eenti e, together with a new one called Egmont-place, which terminates towards tho north, where is situated an elegant and commodious hotel, surrounded by a plan-tation. Many of the old houses have been rebuilt and other improvements effected under the auspiccs of the late Earl of Egmont. In the vicinity, on the liver Dallua are the extensive corn mills of Messrs. Barry and Mr. Stowell—tho latter, Gurteen Mills, are situ-ated near the town. An immense business is done by theso two establishments, which are of great advan-tage to the neighbouring farmers, by affording a ready

of hewn stone; the latter is upon a largo scale, adapted for the convenient classification of prisoners. Petty sessions are held every Saturday, and general sessions in June and December.

The parish church is a small neat structure, with a square embattled tower, surmounted by pinnacles. The Roman Catholic chapel is commodious within, and neat externally. The cliapel-yard is entered by a very handsome gateway, formed of pillars of hewn stone, surmounted with richly crockctted pinnacles, the work of a native artist, tho lato Tobias Vanston. A freo school, under tho superintendence of the Board of

Not far distant are the remains of a castle, begun in the reign of Elizabeth by an Irish chieftain named Carty M'Donough: the policy of the queen would not, however, suffer him to finish it ; for, when lie was on the point of roofing tho building, her orders compelled him to relinquish his intention. I t occu-pies the four sides of a quadrangle one hundred and twenty feet in length by eighty in hreatdh, being

three stories high, and flanked at each angle, hy a square tower of four stories, exhibiting, perhaps, the most perfect remains of the Elizabethan style of archi-tecture now extant. The market is held on Saturday, and is abundantly supplied with all kinds of provisions. Fairs, March 17th, May 4th, July 4th, September 29th, November 3rd, and December 11th, for cattle, &c. The population of the town, according to the returns made in 1851, was 3,074 ; and in 1SG1, 2,2SG.

KEN MA RE i S a small post town and parish in the barony of | soncrs. Tho poor-law union workhouse, which is si-Glenarouglit, county of Kerry, 209 miles s.w. from i tuated on the side of tho hill,[at the north of the town, Dublin, 39 s.E. from Dingle, 40 s. by E. from Tralee, j has a pleasing effect. 35 s. by w. from Listowel, 29 w. from Macroom, and ' 21 s. by w. from Killarney, seated beneath and nearly surrounded by the romantic mountains of Kerry, and washed by a broad estuary of the Roughty, or head of Kenmare Bay, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean. The river, which is capable of admitting ships of al-most any tonnage to -within a short distance of the town, is crossed by a handsome suspension bridge, erected at the joint expense of the Marquis of Lans-downe and the Commissioners of the Board of Works, at a cost of about £S,000; it was commenced in 1838, and is the first structure of its kind in Ireland. A recently published work, speaking of Kenmare, ob-serves,—'The new road from Glengariffto Killarney at once exhibits so very masterly and stupendous a specimen of modern engineering, offers so desirable a route to the grand natural picture gallery of Kerry, and commands such superb and sublime views ,in both its southern and its northern divisions, that it can hard ly fail to render Kenmare a thoroughfare of exactly the

The parish church is a modern structure, erected in 1858, with a steeple—tho interior convenient aud well kept. I t is situated about half a mile east of the town, on a gentle eminence, at the termination of a fine avenue of trees, and commands an extensive view of the Kenmare estuary and the surrounding scenery. The Roman Catholic chapcl, erected in 1802, is a handsome and substantial building, having also a lofty spire, and internally much improved by means of a munificent contribution from the Marquis of Lans-downe. Tho charitable institutions comprise a dis-pensary and fever ward, a school under the national board of education, and a female industrial school, under the charge of the Sisters of the Convent. To the westward of the town are the ruins of Dunkerron and Cappanacoss Castles,—the former was built by Owen O'Sullivan, and the latter was formerly the re-sidence of O'Sullivan More.

The market, chartered for Saturday, has fallen into disuse, but a well-attended butter market has been esta-

desoription which stimulates the prosperity of a small f blished—held every Thursday—from which the butter 1 is exported direct, instead ofbeingfirs t sent to Cork. town.' There is no particular or prominent trade at-

tached to Kenmare; its business is local and domestic, assisted by the visitors in the bathing season, who are attracted by the romantic scenery and fine salmon fishing in the Blackwater, which flows into Kenmare Bay, about six miles below the town.
