Customer Service Approach Philosophy Ferris Water Resources, Presto Geosystem and Poblocki Pavement all focus on and pride ourselves on providing the highest quailty services and client satisfaction. It has been our experience that more time and money can be spend arguing over assigning blame. It is our goal on every project to avoid conflicts before they arise. However when conflicts arise, problems are characterized and a course of corrective action is developed. Our goal is resolve the problem, so that all parties at times may be assigned an action item. It is always our objective to assign action items according to perceived level responsibility of the conflict. Case Study While working for Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure John Ferris (now of Ferris Water Resources) was assigned to resolve complaints of the Lincoln Park Zoo (Chicago, Illinois). Shaw was contracted to redesign a more environmentally sustainable park adjacent to the water features that dominated the southern half of the park. At issue were uncontrolled movements of the floating islands that were constructed within the flamingo pond and the smaller duck pond. The floating islands were a component of the sustainable design that was to take up nutrients that had resulted in nuisance algae blooms.

1. A meeting was held with zoo officials to characterize the precieved problems that they were experiencing with the design and/or installation of the BMPs.

2. I then reviewed reports, plans and contracts that we had with contractors to determine what was planned and who had been involved.

3. I then conducted a field reconnaissance to estable what may have been the root cause of the movement of the islands. My conclusion was that the weight of the anchors (cinder blocks) were insuffient and the length of the anchor lines were too long. These conditions allowed wind to push the islands that then dragged their anchors across the bottom of the ponds.

4. A list of action items was then developedio that would correct the problem. Action items included a) add weight to existing anchors and add additional anchors to hold the islands on one established location, b) purchase additional cider blocks, stainless steel cable and hardware for securing the anchors, c) make arrangements to safely enter the pond exhibits, d) work with zoo staff to identify the best location for the floating islands and e) modify anchoring systems of the floating islands.

5. The list of action items was reviewed with zoo management. Action items were divided between the zoo and Shaw. Shaw had been not only the design engineer but also the owner’s representative for construction. Since the corrective actions were minor, Shaw’s management decided to expedite the fix with their own staff.

6. While zoo management coordinated with its staff, I acquired the necessary materials and scheduled Shaw staff to make the repairs.

7. On the scheduled day zoo staff had moved the birds off exhibit and Shaw’s staff made the necessary modifications to the floating islands.

After the action items were completed, Lincoln Park Zoo no longer experienced any further problems with the floating islands.

Constructed a 140,000 gallon stormwater reuse system that captures every drop of rain that falls on its 2.9 acre

property. Runoff is collected by a bioswale and three rain gardens. Grass and other plants in the green

infrastructure collection system filters oils and other contaminants before the water enters the five fiberglass

storage tanks. A 600 gpm pump fills Poblocki trucks that will use the water for paving, milling, creating sealer and

watering of everything from bicycle paths, soccer fields to trees.

$575,000 and $625,000

$235,000 from MMSD Green Infrastructure Partnership Grant
