The service level agree- ment means that 23 columns from Thinford to the Sewage Works and a further 13 columns from the south of Dean Road Junction to Bridge House Farm will be maintained by the county for the next ten years. The town council will fund the agreement by raising the annual Council Tax by £1 per annum for the lower bands and £1.50 for the highest band. However, while Ferryhill parents and community activists will be celebrat- ing, doubt remains about whether the lights south of Bridge House Farm towards Chilton, which are in the remit of Chilton Town Council, will survive. The Town Council says that with 51, there are signifi- cantly more columns for it to maintain and the funds, it insists, do not exist. The council is currently investigating alternative solutions. Ferryhill lights saved, but doubts remain over Chilton Ferryhill Station Primary School head teacher, Val Jago is to retire this summer after 30 years of service to the school. Mrs Jago has been head teacher at the school for the last 19 years after joining as its deputy head and reception class teacher in 1987. She said: “I never really wanted to be a head teacher because I always loved being in the class- room teaching the children, which I still do. “But my predecessor went on a secondment for a year so I had no option but to become head. But then I found that I actually quite liked it. “When he didn’t return, I applied for the headship and was appointed the head in 1997.” Mrs Jago has been a teacher for the past 43 years and has witnessed big changes in the school over the time, particularly in the use of technology as a teaching aid. “When I first started here there was only one photo- copier and one computer per class. Now we have IT for just about every child,” she said, adding that today’s children also learn much more through play and outdoor activities than they did in the past. “I also think that children now leave primary school with a higher level of edu- cation in basic literacy and numeracy,” she said. “The nice thing is that I’ve seen all these children grow up and now their children are coming to the school. I’ll miss seeing the genera- tions of children following on from their parents.” Mrs Jago said she is looking forward to spending more time on her hobbies of reading, gardening, painting and working with Escomb Saxon Church. Reverend Keith Lumsden prepares for retirement

from £20 for 100 mins

On Wednesday July 15th Reverend Keith Lumsden will be officiating at his last service in St Luke’s Church Ferryhill which will mark his retirement. Re-freshments will be served following the service.Rev Lumsden was a curate at a Parish in South Shields and was then appointed Team Vicar at St John’s Jarrow. His retirement comes after 43 years of ministry, 27 years of which have been at Ferryhill. He was a 43 years old when he came to Ferryhill with his wife Anne and their two children, Paul and Vicky, both whom are now grown and have children of their own, making Keith and Ann loving grandparents. Many people within the community will have memories of Keith over the years. There have been many couples married at St Luke’s and Holy Trinity, many of whom have then had children baptised and, more sombrely, funerals presided over.St Luke’s Church has cel-ebrated many landmarks during Keith’s time. One of the major changes to the church, which is one of its main features, is the Brindley organ which was installed in 1994. To mark the millennium, the congregation collected for a new stained glass window which can be seen

in the main body of the church. In 2007, Holy Trinity in West Cornforth joined with St Luke’s to become one united Parish. Mrs Jackie Curle, Church-warden for Holy Trinity said, “Keith has been a great support to our parish and will be great missed, as will his wife Anne who plays the organ at Holy Trinity. We wish them good health and happiness.” The 150th and 160th an-niversaries of the St Luke’s were commemorated with Flower Festivals. Perhaps the most memo-rable feature of the last Flower Festival was the loan of the facsimile of the Lindisfarne Gospels which enabled many to have access to this precious document.Recently, St Luke’s has seen the establishment of the local food bank in the parish centre, which is an ecumenical enterprise.

Patrons of the popular Friday Lunches within the parish centre often see Keith in one of his many other roles, as chef! Keith has always encour-aged the involvement of the laity to take part in services and church projects. He has supported many who have taken training: Readers, Pastoral Assis-tants and a member of the congregation who has gone forward to be ordained.Keith has always been very active within the local community. He was chairman of the Town Council 2000 Com-mittee, worked with children in the local schools where he was a member of the Board of Governors and also became chairman. During his time, Reverend Lumsden has forged close links with Germany, initi-ating the twinning of the town with Reinhausen, which has resulted in many visitor exchanges and friendships being formed with churches and congre-gations in Germany.Mr Harry Slater, Church Warden at St Luke’s said, “Keith has always taken an active part in the com-munity, a larger than life person, who will be a hard act to follow. “On behalf of our congre-gation, I would like to wish him and his wife, Ann, a very happy retirement.”

Above: Reverend Lumsden with his wife, Anne and below, with the Lindisfarne Gospels facimile, which was loaned to the church during the 160th anniversary festival.

Dear Editor, Chilton Catholic Club would like to give a special thank you for their charity night, held on Friday 3rd July.

We would also like to give a special mention to June Hope and Susan Bailey and all the staff at the Catholic Club.

The money raised was over £500 for Chilton Methodist Church. Thank you to everyone who donated, the minister was overwhelmed by the response. Yours sincerely,Chilton Catholic Club Committee.

Dear Editor, I’m finding myself at the age where I’m inter-ested in seeing if I’ve unexpectedly got some relatives alive who I don’t know about.

My situation is this: my great grandfather was Isaac Lister, who worked Coldstream Farm in Croxdale in the early 1900’s. He married Isabella Stott, and they had 12 children al-together.

One of those was my grandfather, Robert Lister, who eventually took over the farm at Coldstream until he died in 1932, and is buried at Tudhoe.

When my branch of the family moved out of Durham contact was lost with the other family members. But my uncle, James Lister (who turned 90 this year) believes that most of the descendants of those other 11 children of Isaac and Isabella probably now live in the Ferryhill area.

If any of this sounds familiar to any of your readers, I’d be interested in talking with them.

Yours sincerely,Malcolm King (email: [email protected])

FErryhiLL tOWN cOUNciLJULY MEETINGS in Ferryhill Town Hall

After the visit to the Shildon Civic Hall of the beautiful Princess Charac-ter, Belle, who starred in last month’s superb panto Beauty and the Beast, the cast and friends of Shildon CentreStage are now about to follow the yellow brick road to the amazing Emerald City. The show will have all the familiar characters from this famous story as Dorothy goes on the adven-ture through Oz, meeting many strange characters along the way as well as singing many of the bril-liant songs that makes this show, such a family favour-ite.However, for the show to go on, the Wizard of Oz is casting his net across the county in the hope of catching some new adult performers.A spokesperson for Centre-Stage explains: “This show has many different charac-ters who all help in Doro-thy’s journey to see the Wizard of Oz, and this is where we need your help. “We are in need of new members who can help make this show possible, whether you want to play Dorothy, or any of the

three friends, or maybe you fancy playing one of the evil charcters who try to stop Dorothy’s journey.“If you would like to sing along that winding yellow road or even dance along through the poppy fields towards the land of Oz, we would love to hear from you. “We are about to enter our 20th year so we would love for you to be apart of this journey.“We are an adult group and if you have any free time on a Thursday night, please get in touch with us. “We meet on a Thursday night from 7.30pm at the Civic Hall in Shildon. “So why don’t you come along and have a drink with the cast and join in the fun we will have doing this show.” “The group has members from all over County Durham, from Darlington to Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor.“For more information about the group, call Andrew on 01325 313363 or Derrick on 01388 774838.“So come and join us in singing, We’re off to see the Wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz!”

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Ferryhill Banner Group, we would like to thank the many companies who sponsored our Race Night.

Also, the people who made generous donations and everyone who came along to support the evening at the Surtees Arms.

We raised a magnificent £330.

A big thank you to the very generous people of Ferryhill. Yours sincerely,Peter AtkinsonStratford Gardens, Ferryhill

Dear Editor, Many thanks for putting the article in The Chapter regarding carrier bags and egg boxes (Issue 733). We were overwhelmed with the response and are very grateful to those who brought these items. Kind regards and thanks again. Janet McDonaghFerryhill Food Bank

Dear Editor, At a special Town Council meeting at Ferryhill on Wednesday 1st July, the councillors put the safety of road users, pedestrians and children first by voting unanimously to save the lights on their section of the A167 and enter into a service level agreement with Durham County Council to pay annually for maintenance and electrical charges for ten years.

The route from Ferryhill to Chilton has many twists and turns and there were many accidents before the lights were installed thirty years ago. Children and pedestrians walk this section regularly to school and to leisure facilities at Chilton.

The route from Ferryhill to Thinford is also walked regularly by families visiting the numerous food outlets at Thinford.

To remove these lights was too big a risk for all concerned, a risk Fer-ryhill Town Councillors were not prepared to take.

I applaud you for making this decision and so does the whole of Ferryhill.

Yours sincerely,Cllr Brian Avery,Durham County Council.

Dear Editor, In regard to the brown bin recycle collections, the first on 28th April. After the vehicle got to the top of my street, it emptied two bins in a street of thirty houses and the next three collections only produced a total of three bins (to 23rd June).

Any firm outside of the council would be in financial suicide by now with the cost of running the vehicle plus tax, insurance and wages from a crew of three. Is nobody checking the loads coming in?

I’m told it’s the same in many other streets, and if the council put a charge on the blue bins next year it will be the same result, as people know it will only be a price increase every year after this debacle.

Durham County Council want to turn off the lights on the A167 to save money? Need I say any more?

Yours,H Dunne,Chilton

Shark fishing in Bishop Middleham

It’s not often you see shark fishing in Bishop Middleham - or anywhere else in County Durham for that matter - but reader, Helen Brown, was tickled by this unusual garden ornament on a walk though the village recently. “I saw this and couldn’t resist taking a photo, said Helen. “I thought your readers would like it too.” The ornament was in fact a scarecrow, competing in

the village’s ninth annual scarecrow festival.A record 47 scarecrows were entered into the com-petition, based around the year’s theme of outdoor activities. The winning entry was another fisherman, in the garden of second-time entrant, Maggie Hailes, which was joined by an al-together different species of hunter - the Loch Ness Monster!

Durham police and the RSPB have launched an appeal for information after a peregrine falcon was found shot in Bishop Middleham last month. (The photograph, right, is similar but not the exact bird). The RSPB is offering a £1000 reward to any person who can provide informa-tion that leads to a suc-cessful conviction. The male bird was found alive on Thursday 4th June at Castle Lake, Bishop Mid-dleham, a local reserve managed by Durham Bird Club. The bird of prey was taken to a local vet for further examination and an x-ray that confirmed that the bird had been shot. The injuries were so severe that the bird was later eu-thanised. It is not known if the male was part of a breeding pair in the area. The peregrine falcon is the world’s fastest animal, clocking speeds of 200mph when descending in flight. As a wild bird it has been protected under law since 1954 and anyone found guilty of an offence faces up to a maximum of six months in prison and/or a £5000 fine.

RSPB Investigations Officer, Howard Jones, com-mented: “This is another confirmed incident of bird of prey persecution in the County Durham area.“The county has an awful track record for this type of crime and continues to remain as one of the worst counties in England and Wales. “Every incident likes this increases the public’s intol-erance towards this sort of

criminal behaviour.”PC Ken Barclay, the local beat officer for Bishop Middleham said; “I would strongly urge any member of the community who has any information as to the identity of the perpetrator of this cruel act to contact either the RSPB or Durham Police and ask to speak with myself, PC2106 Barclay, or alternatively to email me at [email protected].”

It was a case of mixed emotions for a Ferryhill family when last week’s spectacular thunderstorms brought disaster and delight in large measure.Raymond Lee and his partner, Leigh Iles were stunned to find that their home had been hit by a lightning strike which set the property on fire and destroyed a major section of the roof.Fortunately neither the couple nor their three young daughters, Katie (7), Anna (6) or Aimee (3) were at home, but they feared the worst for their 15-year-

old pet cat, Alan, who was home alone. However, there was joy among the devastation when it was discovered that Alan had managed to escape and was found black with smoke and cowering under a bush.Mr Lee said: “He was really upset. All his fur was falling out.”The pragmatic family are now concentrating on moving forward with their lives: “I’m just thankful everybody is okay,” said Mr Lee, “it’s just bricks and mortar at the end of the day.”

On Saturday 27th June, Aidan Forster, 13, of Ferry-hill Business and Enterprise College and Amiee Forster, 7, of Broom Cottages Primary School both took part in the UK Muaythai Federation Junior British Championships in Knuts-ford, Cheshire.Amiee was first up. She was fighting in the age 6-8 and under 28 kilos category and won her bout comfortably as well as the title and belt. Aidan fought in the age 12-14 and under 51 kilo category. There was an odd number in this category so one fighter got a pass straight to the final. Aidan worked hard in his first fight winning it to qualify for the final. He then had to dig deep in the final as his opponent was fresh, but pulled out all the stops with an out-standing performance to win his title and the belt. Aidan and Amiee will now be asked to attend squad training for the team GB camp who train and fight out in Thailand. The pair train at the Phoenix Gym in Shildon with Gary and Reece Macallister.

Brother and sister, Aidan and Aimee Forster are off to train with the GB squad after winning their respective belts at the UK Muaythai Federation Junior British Championships.

A busy weekend for Mains-forth Cricket Club started on Friday night when the club played their first U19 National T20 Competition match against Willington.Skipper Curtis Bihari won the toss and elected to bat, finishing their innings with 114 runs on the board. The Willington reply started briskly but once the two openers fell to the bowling of Ryan Dawson and Arron Bromley, a victory for the home side was never in any doubt. A fine bowling performance by Matthew Willetts saw him take three wickets and the Willington innings finished on 103, giving Mainsforth a well deserved victory. A spokesperson for Mains-forth said, “The club were encouraged to try to create a T20 atmosphere by pro-viding a BBQ and playing music between each over.

“The club would like to acknowledge that the volume of the music was in excess of being reasonable and offer sincere apologies for any inconvenience or distress that this caused.”On Saturday, the 1st XI were at home to an im-proving Crook Town side with Mainsforth registering a six wicket victory which took them up to third position in the Readers Durham Cricket League First Division. The opening games of the annual Novices Cricket Competition saw the Half Moon, Red Lion, Eldon Arms and Chilton Club progress through to the semi finals which take place on Sunday 19th July. The club 2nd XI are at home this Saturday (11th July) to Hylton, with the 3rd XI having a home match the following day against “The Spin Doctors”.
