Fertilizer analysis
• WEEK 1 &2 – sample preparation for N, theory of elemental analyzer
• Week 3 & 4- BOE analysis, soil analysis (total phosphorus, available phosphorus and moisture content)
• Week 5- fertilizer analysis (digestion, moisture content, particle size)
INTRODUCTION
fertilizer-substances that added to the soil or plant tissues.
What is fertilizer?
Objective
Determination of element N,
P, K, Mg & B
Provide nutrient for
healthy plant growth
To check specification of elements by company
Determination of the moisture
content
Types of fertilizer
Straight fertilizer
Example: Rock phosphate(RP)
Compound fertilizerExample:
R3Z,AJIB RCFMixture fertilizer
Example: RCGB
Register
Place fertilizer
samples in the vial
Grind
Weigh 2.5g of
fertilizer samples
Add distilled water until the mark at
75mL
METHODOLOGYDetermination of P, K, Mg and B using ICP machine
Add 10 mL of HCl and 5 mL of Nitric
Acid
Digestion Cool the samples for 5 minutes
Add distilled water until the volume of beaker
200mL
Transfer into the 500mL of
volumetric flask
filter
Keep the plastic vial in
the tray
1. Weigh 10 g of raw
material into the dish
2. Place the dish into the
oven for 2 hours at 103°C
3. Cool in the desiccator
(10 minutes)
4. Weigh again and record the
reading
5. Repeat step 2 until 4 for 2
times
6. Dispose the
sample
Determination of moisture content
RESULTSDetermination of N, P, K, Mg and B

Percent by weight
W1 is the weight in g of the sample taken.W2 is the weight in g of the sample after drying to constant weight.
Sample ID = 327Sample weight (g) = 10.000Dish weight (g) = 29.470Weight (dish + sample) after (g)= 39.076

CONCLUSION
ELEMENT FUNCTION
N To assist the growth of trees.
P Important in cell division and development of new tissue.
K Required in large amounts for proper growth and reproduction of plants.
Mg Building block of chlorophyll which makes leaves appear green.
B Role in forming and strengthening cell walls.
Chlorophyll (C55H72N4O5Mg)
