An overview of fertilizer statistics in Ghana from 2013 –2016.
More emphasis is given to the year 2016 and each analysis is based on the products with higher quantities.
Official trade data obtained from Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and Validated by CountrySTAT Fertilizer Technical Working Group – Ghana (FTWG-GHA)
2016 data validated from the 14 – 15th June, 2017.
Outline Background information
Fertilizer production
• There are no primary productions of inorganic fertilizers in Ghana.
• Fertilizers are imported, blended and distributed through a network/system of wholesale and retail agro-dealers.
• Four of the major importing companies; Yara Ghana, Chemico Limited, Louis Dreyfus Commodities Ghana (LDC) and Omnifert are also involved in secondary production (blending) of fertilizer formulations, fully operational with varied capacities located in the port city of Tema(Yara, Chemico), Kpong (LDC) and Dawhenya (Omnifert).
• A small percentage of organic fertilizer is also produced locally.
Fertilizer imports
Comments:
• NPK’s with different formulations have been themost imported fertilizers in Ghana over the years,it accounted for 55% of all official fertilizerimports in 2016.
• The top 5 products imported for the past fouryears have been consistent. However, Ureaimports in 2014 reduced because there was nofertilizer subsidy that year.

* No fertilizer subsidy programme in 2014 therefore affecting imports.Other fertilizers includes products like; , Phosphate Rock, SOP, Calcium nitrate, etc

Fertilizer exports
Comments:
• Fertilizer exports from Ghana are very low. The highest exports was 7,520MT recorded in 2014.
• Only 25MT of organic fertilizers was exported to Senegal in 2016.

Other fertilizers includes products like; PK compounds, MOP, etc
Ghana does not produce fertilizers, therefore all exports are ‘re-exports’. Fertilizers are mostly imported in bulk, blended and bagged before transporting.

Fertilizer apparent consumption
Comments:
• NPK’s are the most consumed fertilizers in Ghana. (Accounting for 55% of Ghana’s fertilizer consumption in 2016).
• There was a reduction of 17% in 2016 as compared to 2015.
• In 2016 total apparent consumption of fertilizers in nutrients were 96.6 with 45.0 N, 24.8 P2O5 and 26.8 K2O.
