Primer Domingo De Cuaresma

do de bautismo?

First Sunday of Lent

So, we had a baptism during Mass last Sunday. Baby boy

twins Thomas and Owen shared the historic baptismal

gown that has been used in their dad’s family since it was

hand-sewn in 1882. Think about that. The Civil War was

less than twenty years in the past. The owning of human

beings had only been legally eradicated since 1865.

The tragic “re-settlement” of the native peoples in the

west would not be complete until 1892. Two world wars

would bracket a Great Depression. Periods of great pros-

perity followed the second war and have continued, for

many, into our own time.

Cultural convulsions erupted and changed the world, cre-

ating entirely different boundaries, economic systems,

new enemies, and leading to many wars around the

world, which also continue in our time.

The world of 1882 is nearly unrecognizable to us today.

Well, that’s not quite true. We’d recognize a baptismal

gown anywhere. Thomas and Owen are the 108th and

109th babies in their family to be baptized in that gown,

made so lovingly 134 years ago.

Go back and find those old scrapbooks in the attic. I’ll bet

you’ll find glimmers of the long-ago faith of your fore-

bears, passed on to you, one baptism at a time. And today

we hear readings for the First Sunday of Lent which have

been treasured and proclaimed by the Church since the

fourth century.

Think about THAT. Think about all the changes in ritual

just in our lifetimes. Reflect on the millions of believers

who have come to Mass on this day and heard Jesus de-

bate the Great Liar. In every age, the message has not

changed.

Repent and believe in the Gospel.

Wouldn’t this Lent be a great time to finally frame your

baptismal certificate?

AROUND THE COMMUNITY FEBRUARY 18, 2018

Hi Friends, What an awesome opportunity for us to journey to-gether to the incredible feast of Easter! We will join millions of other Christians as we make our way through the days leading up to the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord. For so many people, the great feast of the year is Christmas, but for Christians, the truly great feast is Easter. Without the Resurrection, we would be with-out the gift of salvation. Jesus had to rise from the dead, or else our biggest problem in life, death, would not have been conquered, and his birth would have long ago been forgotten. The Good News is, however, our Lord Jesus did die and rise from the dead, and so we have access to eternal life, and so death is now like a bee without a stinger for those who have faith in Him! This is why Lent is such an important time of year for us. It is an opportunity for us to have a season where we can refocus on the passion and death of Jesus so that we will be ready to embrace the good news of the Resurrection at Easter. During the 40 days of Lent we will have opportunities to grow our spiritual lives. Lenten suppers with fel-lowship & Stations of the Cross will begin this Friday; different groups of the parish will provide the food. A Lenten Mission, reconciliation, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Deacon Michael LeBeau will lead our mission on prayer March 4-7. The theme of the mission is “Lord, teach me to pray.” The final evening of the mission will be a reconciliation service where you will have an opportunity to make your confession with some oth-er priest different from me! I will be available too. See in the bulletin or check out our Facebook page for more details from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sun-day. My dear friends, may we continue to hold one anoth-er in prayer this Lent. The Lord is going to pour out His blessings upon us! In Christ, Fr. Nick

“Lord, Teach Me to Pray” St. Rose of Lima Parish invites you to a Parish Mission featuring Deacon Michael LeBeau. • Sunday, March 4 – 7:00: “Faith Is the Key to Prayer” • Monday, March 5 – 7:00: “Lord, Teach Us How to Pray” • Tuesday, March 6 – 7:00: “Experiencing the Power of

Prayer” • Wednesday, March 7 – 7:00: “Sacrament of Reconcilia-

tion” •

A free will offering will be taken. All are welcome. Refreshments will be offered in the parish hall after each session.

CONFESSION ~ We will have confessions before every daily Mass during Lent beginning on Tuesday, February 20th.

Stations of the Cross

Every Friday we will have a Lent supper and fellowship from 6-7. The meal will be followed by Stations of the Cross from 7:00 to 7:45. The groups hosting the din-ner for that evening will also lead the Stations of the Cross. Stations will then be followed up with Exposi-tion of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. This part will end at 8. Deacon Don will lead Exposition and Benediction. A priest will be available for confes-sions from 7-8. There will be Lent material both in English and Spanish in our kiosk in the narthex.
