A refreshing citrus duo 4:30 p.m. at Roháč – ČT Hall
Some of you may have seen the captivating Estonian puppet opera Lisa Limone and Maroc Orange: A Rapid Love Story a few years ago in our international competition. Now the citruses return to Anifilm to represent this year’s theme Where is My Home. The feature-length film combines elaborate comic situations and video sequences with charming hand animation as it critically deals with the topics of racism, xenophobia and refugees fleeing to Europe.
Anifilm and the VAF: Works in Progress3 p.m. at the Puppet Theatre
What animated feature films can we look for-ward to? The story of the eaters of odd socks is nearing the finish line and will premier in half a year (The Odd-Sock Eaters, dir. G. Miklí-nová). On the contrary, the puppet animated fairy tale Tonda, Slávka and the Genius (dir. B. Valecká and F. Pošivač) is just in the first stages of development. Foreign projects are represented by the Estonian film Morten (dir. K. Jancis and R. Unt) and the Hungarian film White Plastic Sky (dir. T. Bánóczki and S. Szabó).
A sailor’s world premier 8:30 p.m. at the J. K. Tyl Theatre
Fans of Paul Fierlinger are in for a treat toni-ght – a world premiere of his extraordinary 120-minute feature film, which combines animation with comics. The film is an adap-tation of an autobiography by the American sailor Joshua Slocum, who was the first man to single-handedly circumnavigate the world and who described his experience in the best-seller Sailing Alone Around the World (1900).
The best Czech film of the festival is yours to choose! This year, Anifilm features a new programme section entitled Czech Horizons, a showcase of contemporary Czech animation. The section comprises two screening series: Czech Horizon I. and Czech Horizon II. The first series comprises films primarily for children (which doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy them as well!), while the second Horizon focuses on films primarily for adults. The showcase reflects a very positive phenomenon – an increase in the number of good new Czech films. You can watch for example the new quirky film by the Finn-ish-Czech director Katariina Lillqvist BabyBox, the poetic fairy tale Deep in Moss, a recent music video for the band The Tap Tap or the highly artistic postgraduate film Orfea, shot at FAMU by Michaela Hoffová. The two “Horizons” are complemented by Czech films competing in the international competition. A most interesting addition to the festival portfolio is the brand new viewers’ choice award for the best Czech film of the festival,
the winner of which will be chosen from some 30 films (Czech entries in the interna-tional competition and films included in the “Horizons”). You can vote electronically over the course of the festival. If you already have your festival pass, you should have received an e-mail with a link to the voting page. To
vote, you simply select one film and click SUBMIT. If you have not received the e-mail or are experiencing technical difficulties, you can also vote at the guest service desk in the House of Animation, where we will be happy to assist you. The results will be announced at the closing ceremony.

Once again, parents need not worry, as our youngest visitors will have plenty to do. The fun begins in the morning in Roháč with a hefty dose of Spanish animation – Poco-yo & Capelito II. The screening is ideal for children over three years of age, however, some of the films will be screened in their Slovak-dubbed versions. The screenings continue at 10:30 a.m. with Adventure Time. Should your kids be in the mood for a play for a change, you can take them to the Castle Park to see Naughty Little Kids at 10 a.m. Older children who read well enough to take on subtitles can choose from films compet-ing in the feature film category. How about a Japanese anime The Boy and the Beast or the crime drama slash adventure story of Phantom Boy?
The New Czech Puppets exhibition opens today at 2 p.m. and you are all invited to the opening ceremony! You don’t need an invi- tation, just your festival pass. It is actually a “double exhibition”. One part displays puppets and scenes from the new bedtime story series produced by Czech Television Stories about Mum and Dad. Its director Kristi-na Dufková designed the puppets herself with an original visual style. The other part presents populated decorations and forest elf puppets from the new half-hour film Deep in Moss by Bára Valecká and Filip Pošivač as well as two exhibits of magical puppets of water nymphs and mushrooms.
Wondering on which Polish animated pro-jects you should focus your attention? VAF’s experienced programme managers have prepared a selection of the most interesting projects of the past year. The selection will be presented at 9 a.m. in the congress hall of the Zlatá Hvězda Hotel. Don’t miss it!
The accompanying programme continues at 3 p.m. in the Puppet Theatre with four case studies of successful animation projects form Visegrad countries: The Odd-Sock Eaters (CZ), Tonda, Slávka and the Genius (CZ), Morten (EST, IRL, BEL, GBR) and White Plastic Sky (HU).
This programme is a part of the Visegrad Animation Forum, the industry section of Anifilm and also the largest platform for the education of professionals and the estab-lishment of co-production relationships in Central and Eastern Europe.

Let’s start with how you began… When I was beginning my studies under professor Hoffmeister at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in 1958, we all expected we would once direct an animated film as professionals, but Hofman and Hoff-meister opened our eyes soon enough. Both the Studio of Jiří Trnka and Bratři v triku were full at the time. So I started painting instead and just tried animation from time to time.
When did you finish school? In 1964. I joined the military service and after finishing my compulsory term, finally began exhibiting and sometimes selling my work. It seemed I were to be a painter, leav-ing animated films to others. But then 1968 came and the conditions in art changed drastically. My work became „undesirable“. It was then that I was offered a chance to make a short film at a studio in Nusle, Pra- gue. I started working on a sci-fi film entitled Laokoon about astronauts who give in to greed. The result was a little flawed. I had to work with beginner animators and I did not have enough time to animate it myself because the art was demanding. However, I was able to try out some uncommon ani-mation techniques.
Later on, you made Crabs, a film based on a sci-fi short story by Anatoly Dneprov about the development of intelligent weapons that gets out of control I took the projects I had ready to the Kreslený Film studio in Prague and its then director chose Crabs, pointing out that I could make the film but only as an external author. It was hard work as we had only a very small budget and the project was quite difficult. Once again, I did nearly everything myself – not just all the artwork but also the animation. I animated the crabs using em-bossed cut-outs made of several layers.
The film was a big success Yes, we were awarded at Oberhausen, Tehran and at various other festivals. I even won some award in Bratislava. The studio of-fered me to make another film for them, but they refused all the scripts I brought them. One of them was Homunkulus by the way. Eventually I gave up and stuck to the Little Eveninger stories.
Did the situation improve a little after 1980? I approached them again with the Ho-munkulus script and Jiří Kubíček, who was then the Chief Script Editor, approved the project. We shot the film over the holidays in rather rough conditions.
What was the story behind Microbe, another one of your author films? The dramaturgy people counted on Ho-munkulus, but they also wanted me to come up with something different that would deal with some social issues. In the end, Microbe, an environmental topic rendered as a dark slapstick allegory, was accepted. I finally managed to get the Kreslený Film studio’s resources for this project. Sixteen animators worked on the film. By the way, the Chernobyl disaster happened while we were working on it so the social aspect may have proven more topical than previously intended.
Václav Mergl: It seemed I were to be a painter
This year, Anifilm decided to award the Lifetime Achievement Award for Animation to the artist and director Václav Mergl, who captivates with the originality of both his art and storytelling. Back in Czechoslovakia, he was one of the few who dared step on the unexplored field of science-fiction. We bring you an excerpt from his interview with Stanislav Ulver published in the Film a doba magazine in 1997.

StairsThe House of Animation:
What to do with the kids todayOnce again, parents need not worry, as our
youngest visitors will have plenty to do. The
fun begins in the morning in Roháč with
a hefty dose of Spanish animation – Poco-
yo & Capelito II. The screening is ideal for
children over three years of age, however,
some of the films will be screened in their
Slovak-dubbed versions. The screenings
continue at 10:30 a.m. with Adventure Time. Should your kids be in the mood for a play
for a change, you can take them to the Castle
Park to see Naughty Little Kids at 10 a.m.
Older children who read well enough to take
on subtitles can choose from films compet-
ing in the feature film category. How about
a Japanese anime The Boy and the Beast or
the crime drama slash adventure story of
Phantom Boy?
Beautiful puppets galoreThe New Czech Puppets exhibition opens
today at 2 p.m. and you are all invited to the
opening ceremony! You don’t need an invi-
tation, just your festival pass. It is actually
a “double exhibition”. One part displays
puppets and scenes from the new bedtime
story series produced by Czech Television
Stories about Mum and Dad. Its director Kristi-
na Dufková designed the puppets herself
with an original visual style. The other part
presents populated decorations and forest
elf puppets from the new half-hour film Deep
in Moss by Bára Valecká and Filip Pošivač as
well as two exhibits of magical puppets of
water nymphs and mushrooms.
Third day of the VAFWondering on which Polish animated pro-
jects you should focus your attention? VAF’s
experienced programme managers have
prepared a selection of the most interesting
projects of the past year. The selection will
be presented at 9 a.m. in the congress hall
of the Zlatá Hvězda Hotel. Don’t miss it!
The accompanying programme continues at
3 p.m. in the Puppet Theatre with four case
studies of successful animation projects form
Visegrad countries: The Odd-Sock Eaters (CZ),
Tonda, Slávka and the Genius (CZ), Morten (EST, IRL, BEL, GBR) and White Plastic Sky (HU).
This programme is a part of the Visegrad
Animation Forum, the industry section of

Let’s start with how you began When I was beginning my studies under
professor Hoffmeister at the Academy of
Arts, Architecture and Design in 1958, we all
expected we would once direct an animated
film as professionals, but Hofman and Hoff-
meister opened our eyes soon enough. Both
the Studio of Jiří Trnka and Bratři v triku were
