Welcome to the fourth annual Piers Festival, a celebration of Victoria’s rich cultural diversity and its unique history of migration.
The festival unites two of Victoria’s greatest assets - our creative dynamism and our diverse cultural mix and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to social cohesion. We believe embracing diversity through the arts is fundamental to the building blocks of a modern Australian society and that the arts are a powerful medium to affect social change.
Victoria’s cultural diversity will be celebrated in an exciting festival program that showcases heritage as well as contemporary arts from diverse communities. With migration at the heart of all festival activities, the day will provide opportunities to share culture, stories and have fun with local residents and visitors.
We are delighted to announce that The Gateway Stage headline act this year will be a multicultural ensemble led by the inimitable and legendary Painters and Dockers! Performing with an extraordinarily talented selection of Timorese, Maltese, Sudanese, Burundian, Irish and Australian artists this is sure to be a climactic celebration.
2015 also brings a new space to the festival – The Landing, a diverse meeting place. The Landing is a space for a selection of community groups to represent themselves, their communities and culture. Each group will work with MAV to share their culture and history via installations, activities, workshops and performances. The Landing promises to be an exciting space to explore and participate.
A new special program of stories curated by Lella Cariddi, What Happened at the Pier, will also activate various parts of the pier and span discussions, poetry readings, spoken word, visual art installations and musical responses to the long history of arrivals and departures at the Pier.
In addition to the headline acts, there will be roving kids’ activities and cultural games, historical walking tours, global food tastings, food trucks and more.
pierS FeStiVal 2015As part of Victoria’s official Australia Day celebrations Multicultural Arts Victoria is delighted to bring together so many people and their stories on Princes Pier, the iconic and historic point of entry and departure for so many during its 100 years.
Princes Pier is a unique asset for the people of Victoria and has played a key role in many major historical events that have shaped Australia as a nation. These events have held extraordinary significance both for our nation’s identity and for the wider global community and we are proud to recognise these contributions on Australia Day.
It is Multicultural Arts Victoria’s intention to develop a House of World Cultures for all Victorians building on the ethos of the Piers Festival celebrating what makes Victoria unique – our diversity. It will be a place for contemporary cultural expression that acknowledges and builds solidly upon our history. The House of World Cultures will function as both a programmable multi-disciplinary arts space and as an incubator for social cohesion and cultural exchange. It will align to international organisations such as UNESCO and be a national icon for diversity – one that all Victorians will be incredibly proud of.
On behalf of Multicultural Arts Victoria and the wonderful communities and artists involved in the 2015 Piers Festival we hope you enjoy the program and keep an eye on the Pier for the development of a House of World Cultures.

La Voce Della Luna (The Voice of the Moon) is an intergenerational Italian Australian Women’s choir based in Melbourne. They are a sassy group of women who sing the Italian popular and folk tradition from a vocal repertoire that traverses the length and breadth of Italy and goes from the 21st century back to the 1500’s.
Violeta Parra is one of the longest running Chilean folkloric dance groups of Victoria. Although some of the dancers were born in Chile most of the younger students were born in Australia and are proud of having the opportunity to carry on the Chilean culture and history through the art of dance.
Lehenda Ukrainian Dance Company is made up of over 40 dancers who perform with pride, passion and embody the true soul of Ukrainian culture. The strength, beauty and grace of Ukrainian Cossack dancers, combine to give you the contagious energy, spectacle, colour and spirit that is, Ukrainian dance!
Celebrating the songs and dance culture of Punjab, Melbourne Bhangra Regiment are a mixed team of 18 boys and girls bringing the spirit and passion of the Indian state to Melbourne. Be ready to witness a revolution in the Australian Bhangra scene
Reviving the true sounds of Italy and leaving behind the cheesy copies of Italian songs made famous by American singers, this band plays music direct from Italy’s heart. Lending a distinctly modern jazz sensibility to the combo, band leader Mirko Guerrini has created a unique and world class ensemble.

Described by reviewers as an ‘art music extravaganza!’, Bosak and the BFO bring original music inspired by political and social secrecy, censorship, interrogation, escape, unruly balkan-jazz, and film noir... Bosak and her BFO present their own anarchic brand of music and performance aesthetic.
Zeptepi are a high energy foot-stomping folk-rock act, fusing elements of post-punk Celtic acts such as The Waterboys and The Pogues with a love of sea shanties, great stories… and some crazy electric banjo.
MikelAngelo What would Elvis have sounded like if he grew up in Eastern Europe in the 1950s and played piano accordion? Accompanied by an amazing live band, award-winning baritone crooner Mikelangelo tells the story of Elvis’ long lost twin brother, Johnny Presley, whose career mirrors that of the King, re-inventing rock’n’roll behind the Iron Curtain.
gnArnAyArrAHe WAitAirie Joining Mikelangelo, he will be performing as Black Elvis! an act for which he has received much acclaim. Gnarnayarrahe Waitairie is an aboriginal elder who has been performing for more than 30 years with didgeridoo, dance, song and storytelling.
They’re back! The Painters & Dockers are once again storming Australian stages. With a specially commissioned set for Piers Festival and a stunning roster of guest collaborators from across the globe - from Melbourne to Malta to Timor to Burundi to Croatia; songs of work and migration; songs for soldiers and those left behind; with all the Painters and Dockers classics thrown in, the day will be sure to go out with an all singing, all dancing bang!

what happened at the pier?(in the GatehouSe)
What Happened at the Pier celebrates and reflects on the collective migration stories at Princes Pier, the significant entry point where almost half of the 180,000 post World War II refugees to Australia arrived. It celebrates the pivotal role the Port Melbourne piers precinct played from 1915 to 1969 in Victoria’s growth and as a gateway to the diversity of cultures that enrich our community.
Artists responded to questions posed including: “What were the social, political and economic circumstances that made you and your family decide to leave home and all that was known to you, to migrate to Australia and confront the unknown?”; “what and who did you leave behind?”; “What happened during your journey to Australia?”; “What objects could you not leave behind and brought with you?”.
Stories came directly from migrants themselves, or through the agency of a younger generation who would be representing their ancestors. Each of the contributions carries a significant sense of personal history.
For one day only the gatehouse becomes a place for reflection, learning and celebration of these stories as preserved by their memory keepers. A remarkable collection of personal artefacts; creative visual, digital and written works are on show all day with a special event (see overleaf) from 2.30pm-4.30pm.
