INTRODUCING OUR VOCAL ADJUDICATOR FOR 2015
JOHN BOLTON WOOD, AM A celebrated performer and the winner of five Green Room Awards, John Bolton Wood AM was born in Sydney. John received his music education at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and the London Opera Centre and made his UK debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Bosun in Billy Budd. He returned to Australia in 1973 to perform the role of Roderick Usher in Larry Sitsky’s Fall of the House of Usher (the first full-scale production to be staged in the Opera Theatre at the Sydney Opera House). Since then, John has appeared with all the Australian state opera companies and Opera Australia in a wide range of opera and operetta roles. Notable operatic engagements include Dr Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) for the Welsh National Opera, Opera Queensland, Victorian Opera and Wellington City Opera; the title role in Rigoletto for Opera Queensland, Victoria State Opera and New Zealand Opera; Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Sacristan (Tosca), Baron Douphol and Dr Grenville (La Traviata) and Fra Melitone (La Forza del Destino) for Opera Queensland; Frank (Die Fledermaus) for Opera Queensland and State Opera of South Australia; Germont Père (La Traviata) and Smirnov (The Bear) for Victorian Opera; the title role in Gianni Schicchi for Opera New Zealand. Recent performances include the roles of Sacristan, Dr Grenvil (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour), Benoit (La bohème) and Baron Zeta (The Merry Widow) all for Opera Australia and Fra Melitone for State Opera of South Australia. In 2014 John’s engagements for Opera Australia included covering the title role in Rigoletto.

PRELIMINARIES
The Dame Malvina Major Foundation First Prize - $5,000*
The Opera Foundation Second Prize - $2,500 The Pegasus Bay Winery Third Prize - $500
Pre-requisite classes: Aria competitors are to enter any three Open classes. Competitors are to nominate two Arias, both of which are to be sung in original language and the original key. The time limit for each Aria is eight minutes. Competitors will sing their first Aria in the Preliminaries and those competitors recalled for the Final will sing both Arias. The Adjudicator has the discretion to choose up to six finalists. Only the Arias as printed in the programme are to be performed.

* The Dame Malvina Major Foundation is to provide the first prize of $5,000 ($3,500 cash and $1,500 to go towards expenses for the winner to participate in the New Zealand Aria in Rotorua late October/November 2015). The inability of the winner to attend the New Zealand Aria for valid reasons (e.g. due to commitments that cannot be possibly changed or such as previously winner the New Zealand Aria competition) will mean the $1,500 will be available to the winner for a significant career development project approved by DMMF.
