DALLAS – The Suns were officially eliminated from playoff contention as the Dallas Mavericks re-took the lead in the final minutes then held on in the closing seconds to secure a 107-104 victory at American Airlines Center. The game was tied entering the fourth quarter and neither team led by more than two points until the Suns went up 98-95 on a Gerald Green three-pointer with 5:18 to play. The Suns led 100-97 with 3:56 remaining before the Mavericks went on a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead of their own which they expanded to four points on a Dirk Nowitzki three-pointer with :22.8 to play. After Nowitzki made one of two free throws, the Suns trailed 107-104 with :16.1 left but Markieff Morris and Eric Bledsoe each missed potential game-tying three-pointers. Brandan Wright gave the Suns a final chance with a steal with :03.9 to play but Morris’ three-pointer at the buzzer missed as Dallas held on for the win. Green scored a season-high 30 points while playing just 30 minutes and Marcus Morris had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Monta Ellis led Dallas with 20 points and Tyson Chandler had 23 boards.

SUNS 69 HAWKS 96 Regular Season Game 78 Philips Arena

ATLANTA – The Suns trailed nearly the entire game and were held to a season-low in scoring and tied the second-lowest output in franchise history as the Atlanta Hawks won their record 59th game of the season by a 96-69 score at Philips Arena. The 69-point total marked just the third time in team history the Suns failed to reach 70 points while the Hawks’ defensive performance represented their fewest points allowed in a game since the 1998-99 season. The Suns scored the game’s first basket on a Brandan Wright dunk but Atlanta then went on an 8-0 run and would not trail for the rest of the game, extending their lead to as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter and outscoring the Suns 44-26 in the second half. Neither team shot above 20 percent from beyond the arc but the Hawks shot 49.4 percent from the field while limiting the Suns to just 31.3 percent. Gerald Green scored 15 points off the bench to lead Phoenix as he was the only Sun to score in double-digits. Jeff Teague, Mike Muscala and DeMarre Carroll all tied for Atlanta’s team-lead with 16 points apiece while Al Horford added 14 points.

JAZZ 85 SUNS 87 Regular Season Game 77 US Airways Center

PHOENIX – The Suns held on in the final seconds, escaping a potential buzzer-beater to win the season series over the Utah Jazz with an 87-85 victory at US Airways Center. The Suns led 87-85 when the Jazz gained possession on a missed free throw with :16.0 remaining in the game and forced Joe Ingles into a difficult four-footer that he missed with :01.9 to play. After the loose ball got back-tapped to Rodney Hood, P.J. Tucker contested Hood’s potential game-winning three-pointer which missed at the buzzer as the Suns held on for the two-point victory. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Suns, as well as a three-game home losing streak. Gerald Green came up huge for the Suns off the bench, scoring a game-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from long range in just 22 minutes of action. Brandan Wright also had a big game, scoring 14 points and blocking four shots while making his fourth start of the season. Gordon Hayward led Utah with 21 points and Hood finished with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting in his first game back after missing one contest with a concussion.

3 PHOENIX SUNS at New Orleans Pelicans, April 10, 2015

TONIGHT’S OPPONENT (April 10) NEW ORLEANS PELICANS (42-36) The Suns and Pelicans meet for the third and final time this season with the teams splitting the first two.

In the last meeting on March 19, the Suns tied a franchise record for fewest points in a win, beating the Pelicans 74-72.

The Suns swept the Pelicans 4-0 last season; it marked the Suns’ first sweep in the series since 2006-07.

The record books have been altered to now reflect this series as games between the Suns and recent teams based in New Orleans (Hornets 2002-13, Pelicans 2013-).

The Suns have won nine of their last 12 games against New Orleans.

The Suns have won four of their last six games on the road against New Orleans.

The Suns won three of four meetings in 2011-12, the lone exception coming in the season opener in which Eric Gordon made a last-second game-winner for the Hornets. Phoenix signed Gordon to a restricted free agent offer sheet over the summer but the Hornets matched.

New Orleans is 8-9 against the Suns since Head Coach Monty Williams was hired before the 2010-11 season. Williams won four of his first five games vs. Phoenix.

The Suns have won 14 of the last 22 meetings following a six-game series losing streak, the Suns’ longest losing skid in series history.

The Suns lead the all-time series 25-18 and are 13-9 at home all-time against the Pelicans.

LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING Suns 74, Pelicans 72 3/19/15 at US Airways Center

PHOENIX – The Suns tied a franchise record for fewest points scored in a win, gritting out a 74-72 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at US Airways Center to improve to 36-33 and remain entrenched in the playoff hunt. With just 74 points in a winning effort, the Suns tied a mark they had previously scored in a 74-71 win at Miami on Jan. 30, 1998, for the fewest points by the team in a win. The Suns recorded another franchise first as all five Suns players notched at least eight rebounds, according to the Elias Sports Bureau this is the first time the Suns have ever done so and it’s the first time any NBA team has done so since Indiana in 2003. Brandan Wright, making his second start of the season, was sensational for the Suns, totaling 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, eight rebounds and a career-high-tying seven blocked shots. Markieff Morris led the Suns with 17 points including a clutch jumper to put the Suns up 73-69 with :51.9 to play. New Orleans had possession down 73-72 in the final five seconds but Tyreke Evans’ 11-foot jumper missed and P.J. Tucker secured the rebound for the Suns to seal the win.

San Antonio won three of four meetings in 2013-14, including the finale, a 112-104 win at AT&T Center.

The Suns won their final home meeting last season by 21 points, a 106-85 victory on Feb. 21 (largest margin of victory by Suns in series since 1998-99). The Spurs went on a 19-game win streak after the loss.

The Suns took the final meeting of 2012-13, snapping San Antonio’s 18-game home win streak in a 105-101 overtime win on Feb. 27. The Suns’ win marked their first over the Spurs since April 13, 2011 in Phoenix.

The Spurs own a narrow 82-75 lead in the all-time series. The Suns own a 50-28 advantage in the Valley of the Sun, but are 25-54 playing in Alamo City.

San Antonio has won 32 of the last 46 regular season contests.

In 2010, the Suns and Spurs met for the 10th time in postseason history, Phoenix’s second-most meetings against one team (LA Lakers-12). In that series, the Suns collected the sixth postseason series sweep in franchise history.

4 PHOENIX SUNS at New Orleans Pelicans, April 10, 2015

NOTES

2014-15 TEAM NOTES

Of the Suns’ 40 losses this season, 18 have come by five points or fewer, most in the NBA.

The Suns rank 3rd in the NBA this season with 18.5 fast break points per game (ranked 1st with 18.7 per game last season—highest average for Suns going back to 1996-97). Among individuals, Eric Bledsoe is 8th in the league with 4.3 fast break points per game and Brandon Knight is t-14th with 3.5 per game.

The Suns have lost a league-high four games on buzzer-beaters this season: Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins on Feb. 8, Houston’s James Harden on Jan. 23, Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton on Dec. 15 and the L.A. Clippers’ Blake Griffin on Dec. 8. The Suns also lost to Golden State on April 2 on a Harrison Barnes shot to take the lead that left the Suns with just :00.4 seconds.

With Jerel McNeal playing at Golden State on April 2, the Suns have now had 23 different players appear in a game with them this season, tied with the 1996-97 Suns for the most in franchise history.

The Suns are t-7th in the NBA with 21 games shooting at least 50 percent from the field, trailing Golden State (29), Atlanta (24), San Antonio (25), Washington (23), Cleveland (22) and the L.A. Clippers (22) and tied with Milwaukee.

The Suns are 38-3 in two seasons (18-3 this season) under Jeff Hornacek when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.

The Suns rank 10th in the NBA with 102.9 points per game and 14th with a field goal percentage of 45.3 percent.

The Suns rank 12th in the NBA with a free throw percentage of 76.2 percent.

The Suns rank 9th in the NBA with 8.6 three-point makes per game and 20th with a three-point percentage of 34.1 percent.

The Suns have played all 18 back-to-back sets this season. The Suns finish 10-8 in the first game and 6-12 in the second game with five sweeps.

The Suns are 14-0 over the last two seasons when shooting at least 50 percent from beyond the arc (last at Houston on March 21).

The Suns open the season’s second half with a different look than the season’s first half as eight players remain from the team’s 15-man opening night roster.

The Suns scored 74 points in a winning effort vs. New Orleans on March 19; the 74 points tied the Suns’ franchise record for fewest points scored in a win. Previously, on Jan. 30, 1998, the Suns won 74-71 at Miami, a point total matched against the Pelicans. The 72 points allowed were the fewest since 71 in a 79-71 win at Boston on Jan. 20, 2012.

All five Suns starters (Marcus Morris, P.J. Tucker, Eric Bledsoe, Brandan Wright, Markieff Morris) recorded at least eight rebounds against New Orleans on March 19; according to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the first time in Suns’ franchise history that all five starters have each had at least eight rebounds. According to Elias, this is the first time any team has had all five starters do so since the Indiana Pacers had all five starters (Brad Miller, Jermaine O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Al Harrington, Jamaal Tinsley) do so vs. Boston on Feb. 1, 2003.

The Suns recorded 65 rebounds in the win at Denver on Feb. 25, the highest amount of boards in a game by any team in the NBA this season. The 65 rebounds are the most by the Suns since they had 67 rebounds at Dallas on Feb. 17, 1998. Seven different players recorded at least six rebounds.

The Suns went 6-2 on an eight-game homestand from Jan. 13-30. The eight-gamer was the longest homestand in franchise history, surpassing three seven-game stretches (1982-83, 1992-93, 2009-10) for the longest in Suns history.

The Suns won seven straight home games before losing to Houston on Jan. 23—their longest home win streak since eight straight from March 14-April 13, 2010.

FOUR FINGERED ASSASSIN

Gerald Green has led the Suns in scoring in each of the last three games, averaging 23.0 points on 50.0 percent (26-of-52) shooting from the field and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three-point territory.

Gerald Green scored 30 points in just 30 minutes at Dallas on April 8; this is Green’s first game of 30+ in 30 or less this season though last season he had four such games which were the most by any NBA player in a season since Michael Jordan had five such games for Chicago in 1990-91. With five total 30+ in 30 or less games since the start of 2013-14, Green is tied with Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins for most in the NBA over this timeframe.

TONY BUCKETS

T.J. Warren is averaging 15.6 points/36 minutes, 4th in the NBA among rookies (min. 400 total minutes) trailing only Chicago’s Nikola Mirotic (18.0), Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins (16.7), and the L.A. Lakers’ Jordan Clarkson (17.0) Warren’s 15.6 points/36 is the highest by a Suns rookie (min. 400 minutes) since Wesley Person (16.3) in 1994-95.

Among rookies since the All-Star break, T.J. Warren ranks 1st with a field goal percentage (min. 10 total attempts) of 57.9 percent (77-of-133), 7th with a Player Efficiency Rating of 16.6 and 12th with 7.9 points per game.

After scoring a career-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting vs. Oklahoma City on March 29, T.J. Warren now has two games of shooting at least 75 percent on at least 10 field goal attempts: the last Suns rookie with multiple such games in a season was Michael Finley (three) in 1995-96 (Basketball-Reference).

T.J. Warren scored 17 points (8-10 FG) in 19 minutes vs. Minnesota on March 11; Warren became the first rookie in the NBA this season to score 17+ points in 20 minutes or fewer and the first Suns rookie to do so since Paul McPherson (20 points in 17 minutes) on Dec. 30, 2000 (Basketball-Reference).

MORE MORRIS

Markieff Morris scored at least 10 points in 12 straight games before only scoring eight at Atlanta on April 7; the 12 straight tied the longest streak of his career (Jan. 15-Feb. 5, 2014). Markieff is averaging 17.2 points on 48.0 percent shooting, 7.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals over his last 14 games.

Marcus Morris has recorded four of his five career double-doubles in his last 10 games, averaging 12.6 points on 45.0 percent shooting, 7.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals over this 10-game stretch.

Since re-entering the starting lineup on March 11, Marcus Morris is averaging 12.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 14 games.

SINCE THE BREAK

Eric Bledsoe is posting 16.7 points, 6.2 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 25 games since the All-Star Break. Bledsoe, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, LeBron James, Blake Griffin, John Wall and Tyreke Evans are the only players in the NBA averaging at least 15.0 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game since the break.

P.J. Tucker has scored in double-digits in 17 of 25 games since the All-Star Break and is averaging 11.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Tucker had perhaps his best game of the season’s second half at Houston on March 21, scoring 19 points (8-12 FG) while limiting James Harden to 16 points on 5-of-19 shooting.

Alex Len is averaging 6.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 18 games since the All-Star Break. Len has five double-doubles since the break.

Since the All-Star Break, Markieff Morris (16.2 points and 6.4 rebounds) and Marcus Morris (11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds) are averaging a combined 28.0 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. Against Dallas on March 22, the Morris twins both had double-doubles in the same game for the first time in their careers.

In two games from March 15-19, Brandan Wright had at least 15 points on 80.0 FG% or better and 8+ rebounds in each; the L.A. Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan (two games from Jan. 14-16) is the only other player in the NBA to do so in consecutive games this season (Basketball-Reference).

5 PHOENIX SUNS at New Orleans Pelicans, April 10, 2015

THE BLED-SHOW

With over 1200 points, 400 assists and 400 rebounds for the season, Eric Bledsoe is just the fifth Sun in team history to post at least those amounts for a season, joining Jason Kidd (2000-01), his current head coach Jeff Hornacek (1991-92), Alvan Adams (1975-76) and Gail Goodrich (1968-69).

Eric Bledsoe scored a career-high 34 points, with 23 coming in the first half, on 11-of-18 shooting in the Suns’ win at Houston on March 21.

Eric Bledsoe has 25 games of at least 20 points this season; entering the season, Bledsoe had 21 such games combined in his first four career seasons.

Eric Bledsoe leads the Suns in times leading the team in points (25), assists (54) and steals (28), and is fourth in rebounds (14) and blocks (14).

Eric Bledsoe is exceeding 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game this season; the last Suns player to average at least 15/5/5 in a season was Jason Kidd in 2000-01. At a height of 6-1, Bledsoe would become just the third NBA player 6-2 or shorter since 1971-72 to average 15/5/5, joining Chris Paul (2005-06, 2008-09) and Mookie Blaylock (1996-97) if he is able to maintain these averages for the season (Basketball-Reference).

Eric Bledsoe is staking a claim to being the best shot blocker in NBA history in the 6-2 or under division: The 6-1 Bledsoe is averaging 0.6 blocks this season, just shy of 0.7. The only other season in NBA history in which a player 6-2 or shorter who qualified for the blocks per game leaderboard averaged at least 0.7 blocks was by Bledsoe in 2012-13 when he averaged 0.7 blocks for the Los Angeles Clippers (Basketball-Reference).

Eric Bledsoe just missed a triple-double with 28 points, career-high 13 rebounds, nine assists and career-high four blocks in a classic win vs. Oklahoma City on Feb. 26. Since 1985-86 Bledsoe became just the eighth player, and only guard, to post at least 28/13/9/4 in a game, joining seven forwards/centers who are all either in or bound for Springfield: LeBron James, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley (twice) and Robert Parish.

Eric Bledsoe’s second triple-double (16 pts, 11 asts, 10 rebs vs. DAL on Dec. 23) made him the first Sun with multiple in a season since Boris Diaw (4) in 2005-06.

Eric Bledsoe recorded his first career triple-double and the first by a Suns player since Boris Diaw on Dec. 15, 2006, with 27 points, a career-high 16 assists and a career-high-tying 11 rebounds at his former team, the L.A. Clippers, on Dec. 8. Dating back to the 1985-86 season, Bledsoe became just the third NBA player to have at least 27 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds in a game, joining Jason Kidd (once) and Magic Johnson (five times) (Basketball-Reference).

Eric Bledsoe has twice scored the game-winning points in the final 30 seconds: At Boston on Nov. 17, Bledsoe finished a steal and uncontested layup with :29.5 remaining to give the Suns a 116-114 lead on the way to a 118-114 win. At Detroit on Nov. 19, Bledsoe scored on a driving layup with :28.7 left to give the Suns an 87-86 lead on the way to an 88-86 win.

GETTING DEFENSIVE

The Suns have been one the league’s best defensive team during their last 12 games (5-7) and over their last 18 games (8-10):

LAST 12 GAMES FIRST 67 GAMES LAST 18 GAMES FIRST 61 GAMES

96.9 104.5 OPPONENT PPG 96.8 105.2

44.8% 45.1% OPPONENT FG% 44.1% 45.4%

99.9 103.7 DEFENSIVE RATING 99.4 104.2

Since March 4, the Suns rank 6th with a Defensive Rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) of 99.4.

The Suns outrebounded their opponent in seven straight games from March 11-25, their longest streak doing so since seven straight from March 23-April 4, 2014. The Suns are averaging 44.4 rebounds and have a rebounding percentage of 50.1 percent since March 11, with the rebounds per game ranking 9th in the NBA over this timeframe and the rebounding percentage ranking 15th.

For the season, the Suns rank 6th in the NBA with 8.57 steals per game.

The Suns rank 6th in the NBA with 17.8 points off turnovers per game. The Suns force opponents into 15.7 turnovers per game, 7th most in NBA.

BLOCK PARTY

Alex Len has 10 games with at least four blocks this season, the most by a Sun since Amar’e Stoudemire had 15 in 2007-08.

Alex Len has 10 double-doubles this season. Currently 21 years old, Len joins Amar’e Stoudemire (46 from 2002-04) and Alvan Adams (36 in 1975-76) as the only players in Suns history to have at least 10 double-doubles with the team before their 22nd birthdays.

Alex Len was inserted into the starting lineup on Dec. 15 and has averaged 1.9 blocks in 43 games since then, t-8th most in the NBA since that date.

Alex Len has blocked at least five shots in six of the last 49 games. Prior to the last 49, a Suns player had five-plus blocks six times in the previous 185 games.

With Brandan Wright (13th, 2.3 blk/36) and Alex Len (7th, 2.5), the Suns have two of the NBA’s leaders in blocks per 36 minutes among qualified players.

KEEF’S ALL-AROUND PLAY

Markieff Morris is shooting 19-of-35 (54.3 percent) in the final two minutes of one-possession games this season, the highest field goal percentage of any NBA player with at least 25 attempts in such situations. His 19 field goal makes are also highest in the NBA in the final two minutes of one-possession games.

When Markieff Morris is on the floor, the Suns have posted a NetRtg (net points per 100 possessions) 8.6 points higher than when he is on the bench:

Suns Minutes OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg

Markieff On Court 2495 103.9 100.9 +3.0

Markieff On Bench 1337 101.8 107.4 -5.6

Markieff Morris scored a career-high 35 points on 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) shooting, including a stretch of 10 straight made field goal attempts, vs. Cleveland on Jan. 13. Markieff became the first Sun since Shaquille O’Neal (45 points, 20-25 FG) on Feb. 27, 2009, to make 15+ field goals on at least 70+ percent shooting.

Markieff Morris has seven games with 25+ points this season, already surpassing his career total entering the season of five.

BENCH MARKS
