KALISHA NAICKER

UPPER Highway mom, Sue Barnes, owner of Subzpads, a company thatmanufactures panty packs and padsfor teenage school girls in disadvan-taged areas won the Margaret HirschBusiness Woman of the Year (Hill-crest), monthly finalist award lastweek.

Her business, which Margaret hashelped promote throughout South Af-rica, has grown from strength tostrength and has seen thousands ofschool girls who previously were unableto attend school when they had theirperiods, attending school on a full timebasis.

According to Barners, she createdSubzinresponsetoarequestforthedo-nation of washable sanitary pads andpanties for the underprivileged girls inher area. "My youngest daughter, whoattends a remedial school due to herdyslexia, came home with appealsfrom her school for sanitary pads andpanties," said Barnes. "I went to theschool to find out what it was all about, and discovered just how many South

African girls skip school while menstru-ating. I immediately thought about myown daughter. If she missed a week permonth of school there is no way shewould catch up. It's tragic that anyonein their teen years should be faced withthis dilemma."

She said that she discovered thatgirls use unhygienic alternatives to san-itary pads, such as newspaper or evensand and leaves, or sitting on cow pat-ties. Doing this puts them at a huge riskof infection. And, according to Barnes,of nine million girls aged between 13and 19 years in South Africa, "80% ofthose were missing a week of school ev-ery month... That's just time you can'tmake up and it's affecting their educa-tion."

A pattern maker and designer witha large clothing chain, Barnes has abackground in construction, fabrica-tion and quality control. Using theseskills, she decided to design somethingto address the problem, coming upwith her sanitary pad packs. At her owncost, Barnes has been producing thesepacks and delivering them to school-girls in KwaZulu-Natal where she lives.

"One pack should last a girl her entirehigh school career," says Barnes, whobelieves that finding a solution to thiscritical issue is her calling.

"Subz are panties to which sanitarypads can be clipped," she said.

"The panty is made of 100% cottonknit, (130 – 140g) which allows the skinto breath. This is also a eco-friendly/green solution. The elastic has a stan-dard non-woven rubber base, andwon’t stretch out of shape. The pad hassix layers, the outer being the 100%cotton knit, water proofing, three layers

of hydrophilic fabric and then the inneris a hydrophobic fabric."

Also at the event was integratedhealth practitioner, Dr. Hennie Palm(www.giant-within.com) who was thekey note speaker and gave a thoughtprovoking talk on women's wellness, with emphasis on adrenal fatigue andhow to maintain a healthy lifestyle toavoid it. ABSA's Vincent Naidoo spokeabout his motivational book SeriouslyKidding and representatives from Est-ee Lauder spoke on the latest beautyproducts on the market.

Jag’s XF R-Sport on the prowlHAVING a beer or a glass of wine beforea meal or drinking cough syrup before hit-ting the road could see you fined ortossed in jail as the Department of Trans-port has proposed a zero blood-alcohollimit.

A proposal to cut to zero the currentmaximum alcohol level of 0.05g/100 mlof blood was published earlier in Januaryin the Government Gazette. The legal al-cohol level was dropped from0.08g/100ml in 1996.

Those who wish to comment on thenew bill and drink-driving restrictions, have until February 27 to respond as thedraft bill has yet to go through the parlia-mentary process.

The original National Road Traffic actreads: “No person shall on a public road-(a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driv-er’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine ofwhich is running, while the concentrationofalcoholinanyspecimenofbloodtakenfrom any part of his or her body is not lessthan0.05g/100ml,orinthecaseofapro-fessional driver referred to in section 32,not less than 0.02g/100ml.”

The amended bill reads: “No person

shall on a public road (a) drive a vehicleor (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motorvehicle the engine of which is running, while there is concentration of alcohol inany specimen of blood taken from anypart of his or her body.”

According to the draft bill, then thesection governing the blood-alcoholamount/limit has been omitted, mean-ing if you’re found driving with any con-centration of alcohol in your blood, youcan be charged.

The bill was first proposed in 2011 bythen minister of transport, S’bu Ndebelewho had been in meetings with the Auto-mobile Association for two years beforeit was proposed to parliament.

AA spokesperson Marius Luyt said al-cohol played a major role in SA roaddeaths. He said a zero alcohol level wouldnot be too drastic as current levels arecurrently very low, reports Beeld.

The chairman of Justice Project SA,Howard Dembovsky, said: “The advan-tage is it sends a clear message againstdrunk driving but the disadvantage isthat people will be criminalised over anytype of alcohol.”
