Service Oriented Computing (SOC)Service Oriented Computing (SOC) research theme focuses on a
new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing.
It treats individual ICT systems and software components as independent services geared for integration, and uses them as fundamental elements to build agile networks of collaborating service applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries.
Current SOC technologies include Web Services and Grid Services.

Services and Agents
Similar concepts (though meaning can be different)• Both are self-contained software entities• Message oriented (WSDL vs ACL)• Autonomous (serving vs goals)• Social (composition vs collaboration)
Main differences• Conceptually: Problem solving, interactions and intelligent capabilities• Real-world: Industry support, business case, standardisation
Great challenge, needs and opportunity• Building and managing service systems is complex• Mostly manual at the moment - more automation support is needed• Agents for automation of management and operations of service systems

Service Oriented Grid: A Vision for the Financial Industry
– Prof. Dr. Wolfgang König, Dr. Michael Schwind–
Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany
28 - SSR2007.5.30
Motivation
New Challenges in the Financial Industry• Customer needs
• Private Banking: Individualized and customized asset management
• Corporate Finance: Increasingly complex financial engineering
Consequences for the Management of IT Resources• Steadily growing demand for IT resources • Huge capacity requirements at peak load times (load balancing problem)• Idle IT resources are increasingly expensive (opportunity costs)
29 - SSR2007.5.30
Key to a Solution: Grid Technology
Service-oriented Grid Architecture• Integration of services and resources by virtualization • Usage-based billing for resources and services in Grid systems • Application engineering capabilities for the provision of financial
services• Inclusion of service level aspects into resource provisioning, pricing,
and billing
Economized Grid Architecture• Bundling of IT resource capacities employing Grid architecture• Controlling of Grid systems using economically-inspired mechanisms
including:• Pricing, metering, billing, and accounting of resources and
services • Including willingness-to-pay and user preferences into the
resource allocation process

The network effect is a characteristic that causes a good or serviceto have a value to a potential customer dependent on the number of customers already owning that good or using that service.
The economies of networking are gradually replacing the economies of scale.

• Positive networks effects are obvious.
: More people means more interaction.
• Wikipedia itself depends on positive network effects.
• Negative network effects result from resource limits.
: Consider the overloads the daily-life trafficsf, or the conestion of bandwidth.
: In this case, more persons begin to decrease the value of a network.

Congestion Control
Congestion avoidance and congestion recovery should receive attention
For the quality of service, there are no perfect solutions, at least not for the foreseeable future
It is possible to deliver differentiated levels of best effort service

Congestion Control & Quality of Service
Congestion control other than First-In-First-Out (FIFO) • penalty for dynamically shared resources• Similarities with the highway system• The influence of routing guidance on the congestion
Quality of service in Internet• a heterogeneous network that uses different lower layer
technologies• the best effort service
Service quality (customer satisfaction) in general - not precisely defined Congestion control with Agent-Based Modeling
