Udaipur, with its beautiful lakes, rich heritage, magnificent palaces, and unparalleled luxury hotels, is oneof the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. It is one of those awe-inspiring places that need tobe visited by everyone, and we are lucky to have found such an incredible location for our convention thisyear. It will be an interesting paradox to hold a formal business convention consisting of members from theworld of trade and logistics, in a pristine, and mystical environment that is Udaipur. We request that youtake your time to soak in the serenity of your surroundings, while enjoying every bit of the ongoings.

The FFFAI is the largest Non- Governmental Organization in International Transport, with representationsin International Bodies such as FIATA, IFCBA & SAFFFA. It is the apex body of 24 Custom House AgentsAssociations in India with more than 6000 members.

An interesting thing to note is that all member associations have collectively come together to make thisconvention a grand success. FFFAI, in more ways than one, stands for and represents the unity indiversity ideology that is India. Regardless of race, religion, language or dialect (we have more than 400 of them!), members from all parts of the country have planned and organized, and have come together to justify our basic aim to work together.

Theme of this year convention is CHA: BEYOND CUSTOMS-EMERGENT GLOBAL LOGISTICIAN

There will be many eminent speakers from various fields in the Convention Business sessions who willshare with us their experience and knowledge on this intriguing subject, enabling us to understand our rolebeyond of a CHA, that of a logistician.

We look forward to welcoming you to Udaipur for the productive and enjoyable convention.

CHA BEYOND CUSTOMS: EMERGENT GLOBAL LOGISTICIAN

I ndia's unabated growth story continues and no longer surprises anyone. India has truly arrived. Weare fortunate to be part of the process and contribute to developing an Economic superpower. Theinteresting times are now and the good times will follow.

Now is the time for each to consolidate, innovate and expand his horizons for individual as well ascollective and national benefit.

The dynamism encountered is fast changing every aspect of Businesses all around.

Globalization is fast changing to Glocalization. i.e. Global corporations are forced to accept localthinking; culture ; and practices. Those who have been able to adapt and adopt are seeing success andshould continue to flourish.

Simultaneously the home bred corporations are required to learn different strategies; adopt differentmodels of execution; up date and up grade their skill sets in short re-invent themselves to survive theturbulent uncontrolled dynamism.

Both understand that collective efforts are needed. Goals can be achieved thru a collective effortincluding associates; partners; service providers etc.

Both have understood the advantages of outsourcing many activities especially in the Logistics space whether storage; 3PL; 4PL; documentation; processing etc. The need for outsourcing or working thruinternal networks of specialized service providers is ever increasing.

The need for good, competent, resourceful, easily accessible, local service providers is increasing andbecoming absolutely necessary. Ability to understand legal issues, interpret the same, realign work intune with local as well as international operations are the qualities Industry looks out for in theseService Providers.

Over the past 3 decades EXIM businesses in India have truly gone inland spread across the length andbreadth of the country thru over 245 ICD's and CFS's spread over more than 60 cities in over 15 states.Over 10 Air Cargo Stations supplement this.

The CHA Custom House Agent in India is Licensed and has a statutory role to play. His importance andrelevance in International Cargo Movement cannot be undermined or ignored. He is adaptable; able;innovative and always current in execution and thinking.

These qualities have for long enabled him serve and serve well as the intermediary undertakingclearance through Customs, with the attendant formalities that would satisfy the legal; fiscal andsecurity needs of the country.

The complex nature of his work, coupled with his inherent able multitasking but excelling qualitiesmakes him an ideal partner in other areas of Logistic requirements of industry.

The fast changing scenario in both Domestic and International business in India offers greatopportunities to the CHA to position himself well and use this as an opportunity to grow.

The growing need for automation and speed in International business has compelled the Government

of India to come up with new facilitating measures. EDI initiatives of the Government coupled withchanges in the CHA Licensing Regulations have made it possible for him to work nationally. Self

Assessment; KYC; AEO (proposed) have put in additional liability on the CHA.

It is now for the Indian CHA to find opportunity in both as well as expand his profile, which he can doeasily. He needs to grow and grow fast.

thThe theme for the 20 Biennial Convention of the FFFAI takes notice of the changing scenario andfocuses delegates' attention on: 'CHA Beyond Customs : Emergent Global Logistician'.

The CHA has the ability to work much beyond Customs he is needed much beyond Customs heneeds to make himself accepted much beyond Customs he can guide; service; partner his clientele

much beyond their expectations and imagination.

The Theme is very current. It targets at what the Indian CHA today is capable of.

Emergent is deliberately used since it means: arising as a natural or logical consequence. Extending therelationship between CHA and Industry and extending the scope of activities that a CHA undertakesboth are natural extensions.

To enable the CHA prepare for both as well as give Industry a confidence in the inherent ability of the

CHA is the endeavor of this Convention.

Extensive inputs from the wide section of CHA fraternity and Industry have been taken whilestructuring the Business Sessions.

    General Information

    Udaipur

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the

final capital of the erstwhile Mewarkingdom, located to thesouthwest of Nagda, on the Banas River, the first capital of theMewar kingdom. Legend has it that Maharana Udai Singh II came

upon a hermit while hunting in the foothills of the Aravalli Range. The hermit blessed the king and asked him to build a palace on the

spot, assuring him it would be well protected. Udai Singh IIconsequently established a residence on the site. In 1568 theMughalemperor Akbar captured the fort of Chittor, and Udai Singh

moved the capital to the site of his residence, which became thecity of Udaipur.

As the Mughal empire weakened, the Sisodia ranas, and latermaharanas (also called the Guhilots orSuryavansh), who hadalways tried to oppose Mughal dominance, reasserted their

independence and recaptured most of Mewar except for Chittor.Udaipur remained the capital of the state, which became aprincely

state of British India in 1818. Being a mountainous region andunsuitable for heavily armoured Mughal horses, Udaipur

remained unmolested from Mughal influence in spite of muchpressure.

Maharana Fatah Singh of Udaipur was the only royalty who did not

attend the Delhi Durbar for King George V in 1911. This fierce senseof independence earned Udaipur the highest gun salute in

Rajasthan, 19 against the 17 each of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bundi,Bikaner, Kota and Karauli. After India's independence in 1947,Maharana Bhupal Singh, the King of Udaipur, acceded to the

Government of India, and Mewar was integrated into India'sRajasthan state.

Located within the Rajasthan area of India and within the region of the Aravalli Mountains, Udaipur is a very historic city and home tono less than three lakes (Fateh Sagar, Pichola and the Swaroop

Sagar). The city serves as the administrative headquarters for thespreading Udaipur District and due to it centrally located lakes,

often goes by the name of the 'City of the Lakes
