In the pursuit of architecture
I’m fascinated by the way of thinking architecture has
taught me and has opened me up to developing. Where I see
at the same time things holistically and in terms of
components, how you read the physical manifestation and
the space left between and around it. The ability to take
an idea and turn it from something intangible into
something real, and that the something built can be used
to manipulate the intangible, how you can create an
emotion a feeling a purpose, how you can sculpt mould and
manipulate elements of light and wind and water.
Architecture is a mysterious and complex thing that I
want to begin to understand and master. I have been
involved in residential, commercial and retail work at
different scales of prestige and scale, and I enjoy the
process of turning constraints into opportunities and
solving problems right from the start to completion, I
would like to learn to apply this right from larger
scales of urban design to specific, concentrated
detailing of a feature piece.
Ffyona Alexandra mc Caffery
Curriculum Vitae
My education has developed from a school where I academically and
extramurally excelled. From then included a challenging but eye opening
education at wits that sparked my fascination with architecture where I got
my undergraduate degree also getting fist hand construction experience in
the building of the classroom at magagula heights. From there I have gained
invaluable and diverse education from two architectural firms namely
monzeglio cook + Gibson and massworxs architects. My degree has been
augmented by my work experience where I have been involved in all levels of:
design, production, presentation and construction drawing development as
well as physical understanding through site exploration and business
understanding through client interaction and brief analysis.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION October 2014 To whom it may concern. Ffyona Mc Caffery’s letter of recommendation: Ffyona's qualities:
Show's exceptional resolve under pressure. Keeps her composure under pressure during exceptionally pressured times.
Has strong personal design beliefs, but also demonstrates a willingness to negotiate design in a team.
Dedication to the project and the end result. Shows true enjoyment to the creative process of design. Commitment to the team. Sense of humour during tough situations. Dedication to Architecture even under the prior discontent of non-acceptance to Post
Grad. She has used it as a fuel to improve her skills. Composure under the pressure of developing her Revit skills in an office running on Revit
only. Dissection of a design into elements, large and small. An ability to re-focus on different jobs in an office which has many projects running at
once. A development of her technical skills and an understanding that a set of drawings is a
set of instructions for site, therefore information must be clear. Part XA ready. SANS 10400 ready An overall positive and fun energy for the office. Serious when she needs to be, yet
never looses her "cool".
Kind regards Thomas Moldovanos – Design Architect Alumni at Wits. BAS, BAS Honours, M.Arch. (Tutor: 3rd year Design 2009, 2nd year Design 2010-2011. External Examiner: 2nd Year Design 2012/2013/2014) Tel: 083 292 1033

provide links between established transport methods as well as create new ones. The bicycle will
give people the control the ability to experience Tshwane in a new and driven manner. People will
infiltrate the city and the iconic bicycles will be physical representations of the city and it’s forward

The MEANS to make their presence known- Communication without words -- Communication without words -- Communication without words -- Communication without words -
a problem needs to be acknowledged in order to resolve it
RE_SCRIPTING an urban interaction. The milieu is Johannesburg, the protagonists are tax paying citizens andthe antagonists are the excluded – homeless. The interaction between the protagonist and the antagonist is oneof avoidance and discomfort. The homeless are irritations to the protagonist as they take resources not of theircontribution and move unrestrained through the city causing a detrimental effect to economic and commercialpractices in areas where they linger. The homeless are silent and translucent to the people that vaguelyacknowledge their existence or plight.
- SITE SITE SITE SITE a. a person who receives support, advantage, or the like, from another or others without giving any useful or proper return, as one who lives on the hospitality of others – HOMELESS- METRICMETRICMETRICMETRIC a. One of a set of measurable factors that define a system and determine its behaviour.- METER METER METER METER a. limits or boundaries.
ParaParaParaPara – 1. Prefix attacked to verbs meaning: ‘at or to one side of, beside, side by side, ancillary’’
RE_SCRIPTRE_SCRIPTRE_SCRIPTRE_SCRIPTIgnorance is the script we wish to rewrite, to change the attitude of the protagonist as well as give a presence and voice to theantagonist. We aim to shock the numbed protagonist into awareness and hopefully action. The parasitic fungus that grows organicallyand externally to the parameters of society and cause harm to the providers in this society need to be given the means to no longerbeg for survival but rather to ask for integration into a system that excludes them. Give the homeless the means to create by their ownintelligence and according to their own design uplifting them from user to architect and contractor, from parasite – to PARA_SITE – alongside ,beside.
PARA METRICPARA METRICPARA METRICPARA METRICThe means of communication would be ad hoc architecture created using modular units repeated to form organic forms that havethousands of different solutions based on the parameters experienced by the homeless: the number of components; the site and thedirection of the designer. These parametric forms would start to litter the city becoming more and more prominent due to their speed ofconstruction, their variability of form and their positioning in dead urban space. The homeless will have the stage to make theirpresence known and challenge society and the government. Requesting assistance without begging for survival.
‘’Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture’’ Frank Lloyd Wright‘’Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture’’ Frank Lloyd Wright‘’Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture’’ Frank Lloyd Wright‘’Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture’’ Frank Lloyd Wright
ComponentsComponentsComponentsComponentsThe homeless are huge contributors to informal recycling. They would now be given the opportunity not only toreceive reimbursement for their collections but to also receive a recycled component. The recycling companieswould have incentives to supply the components as they would be liable to receive grants. The homeless wouldtake these light weight and manageable components with them as they moved. Either collaborating or workingalone they would then have the means to construct these parametric forms that can be both physically andsocially functional.socially functional.socially functional.socially functional.

These interventions are likely to take ion their own functionality as furniture or gathering space. They wouldbecome nodes of activity and seeds of metaphysical thinking planted in our otherwise logical urbanity.

INITIALLY I WANTED TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN AND WANTED TO USE MY URBAN REGENERATION BUILDING TO REDEFINE A PURPOSE IN
GERMISTON THAT WASN'T TIME BOUND. SO I DESIGNED A SELF SUFFICIENT TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION FACILITY THAT WAS ABLE TO ADAPT AND
CHANGE WITH THE NEEDS OF THE CITY. HOWEVER INSTEAD OF FULFILLING NUMEROUS FUNCTIONS I FEEL THAT THE UNDEFINED PLANNING LIMITED ITS
CURRENT FUNCTION IN AN ATTEMPT TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE.
I REDESIGNED ON THE SAME SITE THAT HAD GOOD CONNECTIONS TO TRAVEL PATHS THROUGH GERMISTON. I WANTED TO CREATE A COMPLEX OF
BUILDINGS AND FUNCTIONS THAT MAXIMIZED THE RANGE , NUMBER AND HOURS OF USERS. I USED CROSS PROGRAMMING, CREATING SECTIONS THAT
WERE FOR RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, BUSINESS AND PUBLIC USES. THE DIFFERENT ZONES WERE STAGGERED IN TERMS OF APPROACH AND ACCESS
ABILITY AND THE CIRCULATIONS ROUTES WERE SE PER AT ED, LINKED AND UNITED AT CONTROLLED POINTS THROUGH OUT THE BUILDING. THE

Through he massing of the required spaces on the footprint of the site, we are able to see how best to make the various spatial connections occur, develop strategies to deal withthe servicing of the building and visually understand these implications in space. Designing from this practical aspect gives insight into the depth of system complexity that needs
to be resolved in order for the building to function optimally at all the different levels that a building needs to. Certain element of the program have predetermined positioning
requirements which gives a starting point from which the other placements develop.

Density is not a new development although itsprevalence is continuing to grow. The floor plan
for high rise apartments has many different
configurations all have which have their
advantages and disadvantages. The advantages
of all the typologies however is the use of walls
shared between units, slabs are both roof and
floor , circulation can be shared by many units
and the vertical stacking reduces the footprint,
reducing the amount of land needed and
addressing the problem of sprawl in the cities.
The practicality of the unit is first and foremost in
the design considerations. The manner in which
the unit functions in isolation and then as art of
the block and finally as part of a complex in its
context needs to be a homogenous relationship
that benefits the single and the whole.

latitude of the site, which is 25' 59'' 53'' S. Thus
the panels are angled at 40 degrees north. The

The development of Mini Industrial and Office Units hopes to create a single business that is BOTH PRODUCTION AND SALESBOTH PRODUCTION AND SALESBOTH PRODUCTION AND SALESBOTH PRODUCTION AND SALES. The steps from raw material to end consumer is reduced and the exclusion of the wholesaler eliminates certain logistic costs and makes theSCALES OF ECONOMYSCALES OF ECONOMYSCALES OF ECONOMYSCALES OF ECONOMY better for the small business owner who can be more price competitive. The Mini Unit has to represent both industry and sales and this DUALITYDUALITYDUALITYDUALITY that is normally separate is apparent in the aesthetic division between the front of house offices and the
industrial language of the warehouses looming behind the offices....

The offices are sprinkled and the office doors are required to be fire doors, however as we want the office door to be glass, for visual connection and
in order to create a formal entrance. The glass door is fitted with a special sprinkler. There are fire escape doors in the industrial space and fire routes that run right around the units.
By combining two usually separate work functions the industrial and the office/sales, it creates TWO DISTINCT PREDOMINANT USERSTWO DISTINCT PREDOMINANT USERSTWO DISTINCT PREDOMINANT USERSTWO DISTINCT PREDOMINANT USERS of the building. It is possible to make something appear more DELICATE AND SLENDERDELICATE AND SLENDERDELICATE AND SLENDERDELICATE AND SLENDERwithout Jeopardizing the structural integrity of it. The Concrete roof slab
needs to be a certain thickness to reach the spans. The box is articulated in
an EXTRUSIONEXTRUSIONEXTRUSIONEXTRUSION but instead of using the slab thickness, the chamfer creates
a narrow tapering that draws the eye at an angle. The weight of the concrete
chamfer was enormous the vertical chamfers give it support.
