The history of Fiat began many years ago, at the dawn of Italian industrialisation, in which the company has always played a leading role. From that moment on, the Fiat brand spread throughout the world and developed extensively.

Today, following a change in corporate culture and mentality, the name Fiat is still fraught with meaning, and not only on account of the cars we produce - cars with attractive styling and exciting engines, cars that are accessible and improve the quality of everyday life - but also on account of our heritage and tradition: let's take a stroll back in time through the brand's history.

Page 5: Fiat

From 1899 - 1911Fiat was foundedOn 11 July 1899 at Palazzo Bricherasio, the company charter of "Società Anonima Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino" was signed. Among the members of the Board of Directors, Giovanni Agnelli stood out in the group of investors and won recognition for his determination and strategic vision. In 1902 he became the Managing Director of the company.

The first factory was openedThe first factory was opened in 1900 in Corso Dante. 150 workers were employed there and produced 24 cars, among which the 3/12 HP, not yet fitted with reverse gear. The Fiat logo, oval on a blue background and designed by Biscaretti, was adopted in 1904.

First wins in the racesThe first Car Tour of Italy saw 9 Fiat cars arrive at the finish line. The first real competition car, a 24 HP driven by Vincenzo Lancia, won the Sassi-Superga uphill race in 1902. Giovanni Agnelli himself ran in the Second Tour of Italy and set a record in an 8 HP.

Fiat expands outside ItalyFiat had already proved to be heading toward the most promising markets and in 1908 Fiat Automobile Co. was founded in the United States. In those years the company grew and new companies sprung up with specific functions. Production increased: cars were flanked by commercial vehicles, marine engines, trucks, trams.

The company renovates its production In a few years Fiat completely renovated its production: the cars were fitted with electrical accumulators for the first time. The cardan transmission, a FIAT patent, began to be used. Fiat cars continued to shine in the competitions and set several records

From 1912 - 1925The Lingotto factory In 1916 the construction of Lingotto started under the direction of Giacomo Mattè Trucco. The Factory, the largest in Europe, occupied five floors and had a futuristic test track on the roof. It soon became the emblem of the Italian automotive industry and was completed in 1922.

Page 6: Fiat

Fiat expands to new sectors In the meantime Fiat expanded its activities to the steel industry, the railway, electricity and public transportation lines. Fiat Lubrificanti was established and the first Italian subsidiary was opened in Russia. When the War broke out, company production was almost entirely aimed at supplying the army

Post-war crisis and recoveryAfter the war there were years of transformation and crisis but as early as 1923 growth resumed thanks to an effective cost-curbing policy. Giovanni Agnelli became the CEO. Numerous car models were launched, among which the 509, the first car with four seats.

Development of the CompanyThe policy adopted by the company was to develop industrial mass production. Mass production was launched as the only way to curb the prohibitive prices of cars. During a phase of increasing consumption, Sava, a holding company was set up to promote instalment plans for purchasing cars. IFI, Istituto Finanziario Industriale, was also established at that time.

Services for employees These years were also significant for the internal growth of Fiat. Numerous organizations for employees were established: from health care to specialized schools to sports clubs.

From 1926 - 1938Falling back on the domestic market During the years of Mussolini's autarchic policy, Fiat too had to rescale its plans for international presence and concentrate on the domestic market. In the Thirties trucks and commercial vehicles underwent considerable technological development and at the same time the aviation and railway sectors grew.

The new cars In 1934 and 1936 two cars came out and were destined to an enormous public: the "Balilla", also called "Tariffa minima" due to its low consumption of fuel, and the "Topolino", the smallest utilitarian car in the world, which was produced until 1955.

The Mirafiori factory

Page 7: Fiat

In 1937 works started for the great Mirafiori plant, which introduced the most advanced principles of industrial organisation and confirmed company focus on mass production.

From 1939 - 1951Second World War During the war years there was a drastic reduction in the production of cars, while the construction of commercial vehicles increased considerably.

Changes in the top management In 1945 Senator Giovanni Agnelli died and the presidency of the Fiat was assumed by Vittorio Valletta.

Post-war recovery In 1948 the reconstruction of the plants destroyed during the war was completed, also thanks to the American subsidies from the Marshall plan. Profits started to grow and the number of employees also increased.

Commitment to research With two new cars such as the 500 and the 1400, Fiat confirmed its commitment to research and innovation. For the first time the heating and ventilation systems were installed in mass production. Research continued on marine and aircraft engines: in 1951 the first Italian jet aircraft came into

From 1952 - 1964Diesel In 1953 the first Fiat diesel engined vehicle was presented, the 1400 diesel.

The beginning of the economic boom In 1958 production started growing enormously, both for automobiles and farm machinery. Mirafiori doubled its factories and Fiat set up new manufacturing plants abroad as well. In Italy this was the period of the economic boom and the auto sector was the 'driving force' of the economy.

The new models In 1955 the Fiat 600 was born, a big utilitarian car with a rear mounted engine. In 1957 the New 500 was presented and in 1960 it began to be produced in the

Page 8: Fiat

'Giardinetta' version, a precursor of the Station Wagon style. Moreover, these were the years of Fiat 1800, then 1300 and 1500.

From 1965 - 1977

The economic boom and social unrest Growth continued in exports as well as production: the trend showed an increase from one car every 96 inhabitants to one every 28. In the meantime Fiat boosted its presence in southern Italy by setting up numerous factories there. There was also an increase in trade union conflicts: in 1969 total hours on strike reached 15 million.

The new cars After Fiat 850, a new popular utilitarian car, the 127, made its debut in 1971.

Toward automation In 1966 Giovanni Agnelli, the grandson of the founder, became President of the company. In those years there was a trend toward increased automation of the manufacturing processes to cope with the oil crisis and to continue on the road of technological innovation.

From 1978 - 1990The Robogate system In 1978 the "Robogate" system was created, the new flexible robotized system for assembling the bodywork. It was the road to innovation and the automation of production.

The holding configuration In 1979 the auto sector was set up as an independent company: Fiat Auto S.p.A., which included the brands Fiat, Lancia, Autobianchi, Abarth, Ferrari. The Ferrari brand was acquired at 50% initially, a share that later rose to 87%. In 1984 the company also took over Alfa Romeo (following by Maserati acquisition - a prestigious sports car brand - in 1993).

Independent companies Fiat's numerous operations were set up as independent companies. Alongside Fiat Auto the following companies were founded: Fiat Ferroviaria, Fiat Avio, Fiat Trattori, Fiat Engineering, Comau, Teksid, Magneti Marelli.

Page 9: Fiat

The Fiat Panda and the Fiat Uno In 1980 a new utilitarian was styled by Giugiaro for Fiat and was called Panda. Two years later the car that would become the emblem of Fiat Auto's renewal was born: the Fiat Uno. It featured radical innovations in its electronics, choice of materials and the use of a clean engine: the 1000 Fire.

The Fiat Tipo Another successful model appeared in 1989: the Tipo, voted "Car of the year" for its cutting-edge technical solutions. Its production marked a conquest of Fiat technology: production by processing stations.

From 1991 – 2003The new cars of the 1990s After the debut of the Fiat Tempra in 1990, the 500 came out in 1991. Two years later, in 1993, it was the moment of Fiat Punto (named "Car of the Year" in 1995) and Fiat Coupé, with bodywork designed by Pininfarina and Centro Stile Fiat

Other popular cars With Fiat Ulysse, which came out in 1994, the company made its entry in a sector that was progressively expanding: the SUV. 1995 saw the debut of the Barchetta, the Fiat Bravo and Brava, followed the next year by Fiat Marea and Marea WE, and in 1997 Fiat Palio.

Changes at the top and a new registered office In 1996 Giovanni Agnelli became the Honorary President of the Fiat Group and Cesare Romiti took the office of CEO. In 1997 the parent company left its premises in Corso Marconi and moved to the Palazzina Fiat of Lingotto, which in the meantime had been converted into a Trade Fair and Convention Complex.

The last born in 1990s and the first born of the new century 1998 was the year of Fiat Seicento, ideal for city driving, and the Multipla, characterised by flexible use and uncommon versatility. Two years later, at the Paris Motor Show, Fiat Doblò was presented: a young car, informal, that also served the functions of a commercial vehicle. Meanwhile, in Brazil, the three world cars were launched: the Palio, Palio Weekend and Siena. In 2001 Fiat Stilo was launched, characterized by a new design, with sophisticated technology and numerous deluxe options; the following year Fiat Multipla, New Fiat Ulysse and Fiat Stilo Multi Wagon were restyled. In 2003 - the year that saw the sad death of

Page 10: Fiat

Giovanni Agnelli, who had been at the helm of Fiat for almost half a century - the new Punto was marketed (exactly 10 years after the model was first launched) with the innovative 1.3 Multijet 16v, and the new Barchetta was restyled inside and out. In the autumn Fiat reclaimed its leading position in the super-compact segment with the new Panda, immediately awarded the prize '2004 Car of the Year'.

From 2004 - 2007The restyling of the logo on Fiat Idea Fiat Idea was the first MPV created by Fiat but also the first car with the task of communicating the brand's new 'mission': Fiat Idea displayed the round logo, renewed and proposed by Centro Stile Fiat to evoke the emblem designed to celebrate the Company's 100th Anniversary. It was also meant to get across the most significant change in Fiat car design: more attention to high-tech content and intelligent solutions designed to simplify several aspects of daily life in the car

Multijet engines Fuel saving and top performing, this engine proved a real success factor on the new Fiat car models. The new system - born of the evolution of the 'Common Rail' principle - is the basis of the new second-generation Fiat engines: the small 1.3 Multijet 16v, the sporty 1.9 Multijet 120 and 150 bhp and the powerful 1.4 90 bhp.

Three years of new models The years 2004-2006 were an extremely busy time for the Turin company, which, following a profound change in corporate culture and mentality, focused on a continuous, rapid overhaul of its products, on technological research, on the quality of its designs and on a new, constructive relationship with the customer. During these years, this new philosophy gave rise to a series of new models, and some restyling of older models: from the restyling of the Fiat Idea Model Year, Seicento MY and Stilo MY to the new Multipla and the launch of the Panda 4x4, in 2004; 2005 began with the launch of the new Croma, designed by Giugiaro, the new 600 (celebrating its 50th anniversary), and the Grande Punto - beautiful, solid and exciting. 2006 saw the launch of the New Doblò and Sedici, the 4x4xTUTTI for city and off-road driving, and the official car of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, while the Panda MY 2007 range was extended and overhauled.

Page 11: Fiat

The debut of the new logo on the Bravo 2007 began with the launch of the Bravo - preceded by the first ever institutional Fiat blog. Bravo is the first car to sport the new Fiat logo as a tangible sign of the company's turnaround. The new Bravo is a successful blend of beauty and substance, destined to become a benchmark for the segment

Sometimes, to move forward you need to take a step backwards

That is just what Fiat has done recently, by returning to the company’s original mission, namely to build cars with attractive styling and exciting engines, cars that are accessible and improve the quality of everyday life. A brand that has seen a profound change in corporate culture and mentality, so that it is now focused on a continuous, rapid overhaul of its products, ontechnological research, on the quality of its designs and on a new, constructive relationship with the customer. To celebrate this new approach, Fiat has decided to create a new brand logo: strong yet essential, it perfectly sums up the brand’s new philosophy and historic continuity, through a modern reinterpretation of the famous shield that graced Fiat cars between 1931 and 1968.Let’s discover the history of the Fiat logo.

Page 12: Fiat

2007 After having boasted eight awards as Car of the Year - the most sought-after recognition in the motoring world - the Fiat logo has been changed.

On the one hand, the new logo retains the red colour and shield shape typical of Fiat cars up until the Sixties, and on the other it features formal, three-dimensional characteristics, in terms of form and colour, that suggest advanced technology, Italian design, dynamism and individualism.

1999 The brand’s 100th anniversary saw a return to the style of the logo from the 1920s.The version chosen had a blue background, a chrome-plated logo, with the characteristic A, and a more stylised laurel wreath.

1968 The logo featuring four blue rhombuses was adopted, a logo that was to become the main identifying element for the entire Fiat group.

Page 13: Fiat

1932 The rectangular shape took the form of a shield, a symbol rather more fitting for the radiator grilles on the new models. With a series of slight variations, this logo was used on Fiat cars up until 1968.

1925 The logo became circular, with the Fiat name in red on a white background. The stylised laurel wreath around the outside was intended to celebrate Fiat’s victorious participation in the first competitive motor races.

1901 Fiat decided to apply a proper logo on its cars: a small enamelled brass plate in the centre of which the name Fiat appeared, with the characteristic A, which remained practically unchanged up to the present day.

Page 14: Fiat

1899 The ‘Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino’ company was founded in Turin, and a special poster was created to celebrate the event. At the top left of the poster, the artist included a small parchment containing the company name. This very elaborate design eventually became the first Fiat logo.

Not only a mark The history of Fiat began many years ago, at the dawn of Italian industrialisation, in which the company has always played a leading role. From that moment on, the Fiat brand spread throughout the world and developed extensively.Today, following a change in corporate culture and mentality, the name Fiat is still fraught with meaning, and not only on account of the cars we produce – cars with attractive styling and exciting engines, cars that are accessible and improve the quality of everyday life – but also on account of our heritage and tradition: let’s take a stroll back in time through the brand’s history.

A cutting-edge organisation

Founded in 1976, with its head office in Italy in the town of Orbassano, not far from Turin, the Centro Ricerche Fiat conducts research on engines, vehicles, electronic systems, production processes and technical-managerial methodologies.Over the years, the Centro Ricerche Fiat has gained renown for the excellence of its technical achievements, which have been rewarded with prestigious international awards: “The Economist Innovation Award – 2002” for the development of Common Rail Diesel engine technology; “Legambiente 2002”, for the Hybrid Methane Engine; and the “Ferrari Technology Awards” as the year’s best technical partner.Among the company’s best achievements, particular mention must be made of the Multijet engine, developed in 2002 as the second generation Common Rail engine, with significantly improved performance, that currently powered the following models from the Fiat range: Panda, Stilo, Punto and Idea.

Italian matrix Between the end of the Nineties and the start of 2000, Fiat design put the emphasis on the product’s high degree of practicality, with particular attention to the car’s interior space. Today, the brand has evolved in a new direction for Italian design, where details are carefully amalgamated with harmonious forms and homogeneous styling: a combination of traditional values in a bubbly, innovative setting. The theme of stressing the brand’s Italian quality is expressed by the rediscovery of influences from Italian cars of the Sixties and Seventies and expressions of Italian culture, particularly fashion; also contributing to the Fiat brand’s new personality are major design companies in the Turin area, such as Pininfarina, Bertone or Italdesign, who represent a cultural heritage envied throughout the world. These are the guidelines followed by the Centro Stile designers, from the creation of the Panda and Idea – highly functional and with striking designs – to the design of new models and innovative concept cars.

Where creativity and ideas are transformed into projects The guidelines for each new Fiat are drawn up at the Centro Stile Fiat, one of the main automobile design centers in Turin – the world capital of industrial design for the high concentration of style centers, professionals and associated businesses.

Initially the Centro Stile was part of the Fiat Technical Department, and designed a range of products, including industrial appliances and fridges, and over time it has been transformed into an articulated organization dedicated exclusively to the automobile. Today it has its own premises, employs about 200 people and is divided into specialist departments including Exterior Design, Interior Design and Trim and Colour Design.

The Centro Stile Fiat main task is to define the guidelines for future Fiat models, genuine strategies designed to attract the customer and increase brand value.Drawing up these guidelines begins with the concept for a new model, which involves design, marketing and engineering choices, and then moves on to the search for style. Meticulous studies carried out on each element in the car and an almost maniacal attention to exterior and interior details help to create an Italian product that is instantly recognisable as a Fiat. Today, thanks to three-dimensional design work using virtual methods carried out by the new Fiat Reality Center, design proposals can easily be assessed and checked against production criteria. The definitive design of the new car therefore comes from the Reality Center, and is then used to create the master models.

Page 20: Fiat

A unique system of virtual visualization of the models The Reality Center, part of the Centro Stile Fiat and the only one of its kind in Italy, provides an innovative system for virtual visualization of the models. Inaugurated with the projects for the Fiat Panda and Fiat Idea, it is a high-tech tool that, using mathematical models, makes it possible to analyze and improve the quality of all the components. The Reality Center in fact helps to focus on the design quality, and in particular on individual details: the process starts at the Style Center, where the individual details are studied, and then switches to the visualization by the Reality Center, which

allows the team to concentrate on each individual component of the model, see how it is looks alongside the other elements, and enlarge it in every detail. Here the team of designers and platform engineers can look at the interactions between the model’s design and engineering problems, pre-empting and solving problems that would otherwise only be visible on prototypes constructed at a later date.

Through continuous visualization of the various phases in the evolution of the mathematical models, one arrives at a final definition of the model with a very high level of quality, providing precise mathematical data for any changes that need to be made, which can then be checked using virtual tests. The Reality Center therefore make a decisive contribution to project development, ensuring uniformity of vision and a common objective for the designers and for the engineers of the platform that will be used for the model.

Design laboratories Concept cars are nothing less than laboratories where designers from the Fiat Style Center can experiment with new design concepts to be used on future production cars. Working on a concept car is an opportunity to concentrate more on the car’s design and on potential customers’ future needs, while trying to incorporate as much as possible the design traits typical of the brand. Concept cars are described according to their function: - style concept cars, Motor Show prototypes where new ideas in vehicle architecture are experimented with, and where possible future design philosophies of the brand are put on show, - product concept cars, prototypes giving a preview of the design of upcoming models, an excellent test bed for analyzing public reaction and creating a trend.

Page 21: Fiat

The Fiat project Over time, Fiat’s commitment to safety has become a concrete project, known by the name of “all-round safety”, developed since the Sixties through research conducted by the Fiat Safety Center.

All the tests and research activities, ranging from crash tests using electronic dummies to tests on individual components, lead to the creation of cutting-edge systems and devices, available on all the cars in the range, to ensure driving comfort, roadholding and protection: from preventive safety to active and passive safety.

Twilight sensorAt dusk, the headlights come on automatically, thanks to a sensor that detects variations in the intensity of external light. The same sensor assesses the brightness above and the brightness in the direction the car is traveling and switches on the lights even when the car enters a tunnel.Should the sensor malfunction, the position lights and dipped-beam headlights are switched on while the instrument panel signals the fault. The automatic function can also be disabled and the lights can be operated manually.

Parking sensorsThese are activated every time the car is put into reverse gear, with a special acoustic signal to warn the driver of the presence of any obstacles behind the car outside the driver’s field of view.

All the tests carried out by the Centro Sicurezza Fiat are recorded using special instrumentation for later processing and analysis, and they are always accompanied by film and photographic documentation; in particular for the crash tests, given the speed of the event being filmed, special cameras are used that can film at a rate of 1000 images per second.Once the various tests have been completed, all the data is analyzed by the Centro Sicurezza engineers in close collaboration with the designers, to produce increasingly safe products.

Page 22: Fiat

Rain sensor This is a sensor that automatically turns on the windscreen wipers when it rains and controls their speed according to the intensity of the rain. If it is dark outside, it controls the speed of the wipers to correspond to the surrounding light, thus always ensuring the very best visibility. In addition, the sensor recognizes the streaks of water caused by worn wiper blades and compensates for the effects due to the ageing of the windscreen. In the event of a few drops of rain or some impurities on the glass, the sensor adopts special wiping cycles, while if you wash the windows, it switches on the wiper until all the drops on the windscreen have been wiped off.

One of the most advanced installations in the world The Centro Sicurezza Fiat was opened in 1976 in Italy, in the town of Orbassano, near Turin, replacing the previous Mirafiori Safety Laboratory, which was opened in 1966.Today, the Center is one of the best equipped plants operating in the automobile industry: it has eight test tracks, and on the two main tracks – the longest and fastest currently in existence – collision speeds between vehicles of 140 km/hr are reached. The Center conducts vehicle crash tests, which range from crash tests against barriers to tests for head-on collisions, angled collisions between moving cars, side-on collisions, collisions from behind and overturning. As well as the vast complex of test tracks, the Fiat Safety Center also has an impressive range of equipment for conducting dynamic and static tests on vehicle components, and its various laboratories make it autonomous in all phases of an experiment.

ESP The sophisticated Electronic Stability Program is the system that intervenes in near-limit conditions, when the stability of the car is at risk, and helps the driver to control the car.The ESP continually monitors the grip of the tires on the road surface, and in the event of a skid, it cuts in to ensure that the car follows the set trajectory, thus ensuring exceptional roadholding.

ABS with EBD brake force correctorThis is an active sensor anti-lock system for the wheels that enables the driver to keep control of the car even in emergency situations by preventing the wheels from locking. It also incorporates the EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), system, which divides the braking action among the four wheels, thus preventing the rear wheels from blocking.

Page 23: Fiat

The protection for passengers In the field of passive safety, too, Fiat technology offers a series of devices to ensure the necessary protection for passengers: these devices include airbags (front bags with two-stage activation, side and window bags protecting the rear seats) activated by a central control unit that decides if the airbags should be activated, which ones and how many, depending on the intensity of the braking and the collision; front safety belts with pretensioner and load limiter, three-point rear safety belts; and the Fire Prevention System.Without forgetting the vehicle’s chassis and frame, structures with high energy absorption capacities, the rigid passenger cabin, the programmed deformability body, designed to absorb the energy of an impact gradually, thus minimizing the consequences for the passengers, the Isofix anchorage system for carrying even the smallest passengers in total safety, and the Fiat CODE system, which protects the car against theft.

An all-round commitment Protecting the environment is one of Fiat’s main goals, that has made available its abilities and technological progress for years, and has tried to increase public awareness: safeguarding the environment is a major challenge that concerns the culture and behavior of society as a whole.

As part of its commitment, Fiat has involved not only its partners in industry, but also government and local institutions, in a constant effort to reduce the environmental effects of its products and production processes. Concrete, specific mobility and safety projects, for example, are the Athena Project in Naples and theElectra Parks in Turin and Livorno, in Italy.

Fresh air, even in the city Respect for the environment, for nature and for the world in which we live every day is an unavoidable need for both car manufacturers and car buyers. That is why Fiat is rightly proud of its new Natural Power range, withpetrol/natural gas dual feed.

Page 24: Fiat

The new ecological line features different models, that ensure the minimum environmental impact: Grande Punto, Multipla, Panda, Punto and New Doblò Natural Power.Methane, being totally free of toxic substances, reduces emissions of particulates, benzenes and all other aromatic hydrocarbons to zero; it also reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 25% and, as a result, also reduces the impact on the greenhouse effect.

Page 25: Fiat

Methane also brings benefits in terms of savings: it considerably reduces maintenance costs, thanks to the almost total lack of carbon residues in the engine.

Meanwhile, in several countries there exist state-funded eco-incentives for the purchase of a methane-powered vehicle.

From the point of view of the car’s performance, natural has nothing to fear from comparison with petrol because, thanks to its excellent combustion, it guarantees superb performance in all conditions of use, thus ensuring better service efficiency.

In addition, with the latest protection systems, the methane fuel tank offers the same high levels of safety as a petrol tank.

Eco-centric cars The Fiat technological concept cars are the expression of stylistic experimentation, technological innovation and, above all, commitment to safeguarding the environment, through research activities aimed at improved aerodynamics, weight reduction and the development of alternative fuels.

Page 26: Fiat

The Centro Ricerche Fiat, in collaboration with the Centro Stile Fiat, have developed different projects with particular designs and emissions that are very low or non-existent.

An all-round commitment

The desire to minimise the environmental impact of its cars is one of the driving factors behind the choices made by Fiat during the entire life cycle of its products: from research and development activities to design, from production to the offer of eco-compatible cars – such as the Natural Power range – from driving tips from the innovative eco:Drive application to the recycling and recovery of components from old cars, which has now reached a level of 95%. The circle closes, but the life cycle of the car restarts.

Fiat’s commitment to the protection of the environment and sustainable mobility is the main theme of the new web platform dedicated to the environment: www.ambiente.fiat.it

The site provides material, information, video interviews, offers, tips, useful advice and solutions for fully understanding the years of constant effort by Fiat. A company where your involvement is important, working together for the environment.

Fiat continues to be the brand with the lowest CO2 emissions in Europe

For the fourth year running, Fiat Automobiles is the brand that has recorded the lowest level of CO2 emissions by vehicles sold in Europe in 2010 as certified by the company JATO Dynamics, the world's leading automotive consultancy and research firm.

Compared to 2009, Fiat posted a mean value of 123.1 g/km and

Page 36: Fiat

it also ranked first as Group, with 125.9 g/km and an improvement of 5 g/km compared to last year. This important record is a sign of constant improvement: over the last 4 years, Fiat Automobiles has reduced its average emissions by 10%, from 137.3 to 123.1 g/km of CO2, significantly lower than the target set out by the European Union for 2015, which has been fixed at 130 g/km. It is a result that shows Fiat's commitment to protecting the environment, also through the development of simple and ingenious solutions such as the TwinAir engine, the world's most "ecological" turbo petrol engine, the use of alternative fuels such as Methane/LPG, a sector in which the brand is the European leader; and the development of innovative technology such as eco:Drive, a system which encourages a driving style which is more responsible and eco-compatible, and which has drivers to achieve emissions which are even lower than the type-approval levels. All of Fiat's eco-technological innovation is grouped under the "Air Technologies" brand. These solutions are revolutionary and at the same time simple and of low environmental impact without giving up the driving satisfaction which has always distinguished Italian cars.

Q&A: Rajeev Kapoor, President & CEO, Fiat India

`It`s the right time for us to grow in India`

Yogima Seth Sharma / New Delhi July 20, 2010, 1:13 IST

Though a late re-entry into the growing automobile market, Fiat India Automobiles Ltd hopes to establish itself across all segments with a wide range of products and service network, says its president and CEO, Rajeev Kapoor, in an interview with Yogima Seth Sharma. Edited excerpts:

Fiat has brought in two good products in the Indian market but sales are yet to match industry levels. How do you plan to cope? The basic principle of forming a joint venture with Tata Motors was to bring back the Fiat brand into India and share the Fiat engine technology with Tata Motors. Now that we have achieved both, I think it’s the right time for us to grow in India.

With Grande Punto, Fiat Linea and Fiat 500 in our product stable, we hope to almost double our sales in the country in 2010-11 at 40,000 to 45,000 units, as compared to 23,000 units in 2009-10.

What do you think are the strengths of Fiat in India?Though we currently have just two models, along with Fiat 500, there are varied engine options across Punto and Linea that help us to cater to a wide spectrum of people. Our spare parts are not just easily available, they are also competitively priced, and Fiat India now has a widespread presence through 175 dealerships.

What are your expansion plans over the next two years? We are adding another high-end variant of Linea later this year, over and above the high-powered diesel variant of the Grande Punto launched recently.

Our new small car, smaller than the Punto and powered by a 1.0-litre engine, would hit in 2012 and we expect it to be a volume product for the company. Our dealer network will touch 200 by the end of 2010-11 and over a period of time, localisation levels of Punto and Linea are expected to go up from 85 per cent now to 90 per cent, as we strengthen our vendor base.

What has been the progress on your small car?We have just concluded our customer survey to understand what kind of car they expect in 2012. The product is being jointly developed by our research and development team in India and in Italy. While the styling and designing of the car is being done in Italy, our Indian operation will contribute in component aggregates and reliability test of the vehicle.

How do you see the new small car changing the image of Fiat in India? The A+ or the B segment, where we have cars like Spark, Santro, etc, is growing very fast in India. In fact, it is a highly cluttered segment, with almost every player present. Despite this, I feel there is space for more to come in, primarily because of extremely low car penetration levels in the country.

Fiat’s ability to make high-tech products and sell these at highly competitive prices as we go down the price ladder will help us to regain our position in India.

venture to bring Maserati and Ferrari cars to India. Ratan Tata of Tata Motors who is

Fiat-Tata partnership to deepen

A mega synergy is on the cards in the Indian automotive industry.

The Tatas, who have been selling and servicing Fiat cars in India,

are in talks with Fiat India for a bigger association that could cover

an entire gamut of collaborations, including technology transfer for

the small car's engine. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Tata Motors

Managing Director Ravi Kant said, "We are looking at a synergy

from top to bottom." "The joint branding of showrooms was just the

beginning, we are going to see much much more in the days to

come," he said.

Discussions with Fiat have been going on for the past few months,

and "decisions" are close, he said. However, he refused to divulge

any further details. He refused comment on whether the small car

would be using Fiat technology too. The current collaboration

between Tata Motors and Fiat India is not just a branding

exercise. "We are not branding Fiat cars with the Tata brand. We

are selling and servicing their cars," Rajiv Dubey, Executive

Director, Tata Motors said.

Under the present agreement, the Tata's technicians and

mechanics have undergone training in Fiat's engines and

mechanisms, and are independently servicing Fiat cars. Industry

watchers say this could be a beginning for Tata's mechanics to get

a hang of Fiat's technology. "We are not ruling out anything at this

moment," said an analyst, on condition of anonymity. Tata Motors

has most experience in diesel vehicles in the country, and Fiat is a

world leader in designing environment friendly diesel engines.

The Indian subsidiary of the Italian carmaker is already supplying

technology to Suzuki for its diesel version of the Swift. The first

showroom with both Tata and Fiat brands was inaugurated on

March 6 this year. Fiat, which currently has 25 dealers all over the

country, is targeting to double the number.

other foreign car brands in India has made Fiat change its strategy, gear up Fiat's production

capacity, and hit the market with its four Fiat Palio variants while other variants are in the

pipeline.
