Q. I need to locate a specific fiber.
Is there any equipment made
for fiber optics that will do the
same thing as a copper tone generator?
A. EXFO Inc. manufactures a Live Fiber Identifier/Tone
Generator (LFD-300B/TG-300B) that is the only test
equipment that I am familiar with that will do what you are
asking. The fiber identifier induces a bend ( < 1dB) onto a fiber;
this attenuation from the active fiber is then detected and the
identifier will display signal type and direction. The EXFO Tone
Generator has the ability to induce a modulated signal onto a
dark or active fiber. The modulated signal can then be
detected on the opposite end of the fiber using the fiber
identifier to find your fiber. This essentially is doing the same
job as a copper tone generator. EXFO packages both of these
items into a kit – See featured product below.
