Nursing Fraternity, KEM Hospital, Mumbai

Continuous selfless service of Ms Aruna Shanbaugwho has been in a vegetative state for 37 long years

For 37 years since the rape incident , Aruna has been in a vegetative state. She is about 60 years of age now. Her family and relatives have abandoned her and left her entirely to the KEM Hospital staff.

18

left her entirely to the KEM Hospital staff.

In the world history of medicine there would not be another single case where such a person is cared and nurtured in bed for 37 long years and has not developed a single bed sore or fracture. This speaks of volumes of excellence of nursing care that KEM Nursing staff has given to her.

After the landmark judgment of Supreme Court which dismissed the Euthanasia plea of PinkiVirani on behalf of Aruna Shanbaug, a senior nurse at the hospital said, "We have to tend to her just like a small child at home. She only keeps aging like any of us, does not create any problems for us. We take turns looking after her and we love to care for her. How can anybody think of taking her life?”
