PART%ONE:%%Overview%

Chairman’s%Report%

Thanks% to% your% support% and% contributions,% FICCS% has% been% able% to% take% its% programs% to% new% levels,%

including%scholarships,%feeding%programs%and%much%more.%%2012%has%proven%to%be%the%best%year%ever%for%FICCS%and%our%partners%in%East%Africa.%

Although% we% encountered% many% obstacles% and% challenges% in% 2012,% we% have% been% able% to% maintain%positive%and%sustainable%programs,%which%are%geared%towards%empowering%young%women%and%children%

in% East% Africa% through% healthcare% training% and%medical% support.% % Thanks% to% donors% and% contributors,%FICCS%has%been%able%to%grow%and%make%even%bigger%impacts%in%the%lives%of%underserved%communities%in%East%Africa,%and%we%have%been%able%to%impact%the%lives%of%thousands%of%impoverished%Africans.%

As% a% result,% we% look% forward% to% expanding% our% efforts% in% 2013% and% beyond% to% cater% to% many% more%

deserving%young%women%and%girls.%%Healthcare%should%be%a%right%and%not%a%privilege,%however,%in%Africa%basic%healthcare%needs%are%often%not%met%and%many%people%die% from%easily%preventable%diseases.%This%combined%with%lack%of%medical%training,%equipment,%medicines%and%supplies,%makes%personal%healthcare%

all%that%more%important%for%women%and%children.%

We% hope% you% continue% to% support% FICCS% efforts% in% “Changing% Lives% in% Kenya”% as% we% look% forward% to%gaining%new%partners,%friends%and%well%wishers.%%On%behalf%of%the%girls%in%Kenya,%we%say%thank%you.%

Objectives%

Promote%sustainable%healthcare%solutions%for%impoverished%communities%in%East%Africa%through%training,%research%and%education.%

Our%History%

In% the% early% 1980’s,% Dr.% Parag% V.% Patel’s% uncle% began% Global% FICS% in% Kenya% to% support% disadvantaged%

patients%and%children%in%Nairobi.%%In%2003,%Dr.%Patel%began%conducting%charity%catheterization%procedures%and%training%for%East%African%cardiologist%and%FICCS%was%born.%

To% date,% Dr.% Patel% has% performed% over% 50% charity% cardiac% catheterization% procedures% and% has% trained%dozens%of%East%African%cardiologist,%nurses%and%biomedical%engineers.%%In%2006,%Dr.%Patel%performed%the%

first%successful%Bi%Vent%pacemaker%installation%in%Kenya%at%Kenyatta%National%Hospital.%%In%addition,%over%200%patients%have%received%charity%pacemakers%from%Medtronic%USA.%

In%2010,%FICCS%partnered%with%Aqualia%Foundation%and%began%introducing%programs%to%empower%young%women% and% children% in% rural% and% slum% communities% of% Kenya.% % The% program% has% proven% extremely%

successful%with%over%200%young%women%participating%in%health%training%classes%and%scholarships.%

• 10%primary%boarding%school%scholarships%and%2%boarding%High%School%scholarships%

In% 2011,% FICCS% also% began% a% feeding% and% basic%medical% supply% support% program.% This% includes%

sanitary% pads% antiseptic% creams% and% much% needed%medical%support%for%over%1000%women%and%children.%

%In%addition,%FICCS%has%been%providing%charity%cardiac%services% for% uninsured% in% the% Chicago% area% at% Old%

Ridge% Park% clinic.% FICCS% donates% equipment% and%provides%free%cardiac%consultations%and%screening.%

Managing%Director’s%Report%%

In%2009,%I%met%Dr.%Patel% in%Kenya%in%Kenya%through%a%mutual%Colgate%University%Alumni.%By%chance,%the%three%of%us%who%played%football%together%at%Colgate%happened%to%be%in%Kenya%working%to%help%poor%and%needy%communities.% %We%had%not%seen%each%other%for%over%20%years,%ever%since%we%were%freshman%on%

campus.%As%a%result,%in%2010,%I%officially%became%the%first,%and%only,%FICCS%fullMtime%employee.%

I% joined% FICCS%because%of% a% shared% vision%with%Dr.% Patel,%which% is% to% support% and%promote%healthcare%solutions% for% poor% and% needy% women% and% children% in% Africa.% This% common% vision% began% as% a% simple%donation%of%first%aid%supplies%to%a%local%school%to%scholarships%and%cardiology%symposiums%in%Nairobi.%

Overall,% I%am%very%satisfied%with% the%results%and%progress%we%have%made%since%2010.%The%women%have%been%very%open%which%has%enabled%FICCS%to%better%service%their%medical%needs.%The%children%(pictured%about% with% Stacy)% have% been% regularly% attending% school% and% are% eager% to% learn% due% to% our% newly%

established%feeding%program.%

Yet%at%the%end%of%the%day,%the%hardest%part%of%the%job%is%knowing%that%you%cannot%help%all%of%the%women%and%children.%For%every%child%who%gets%fed,%there%are%10%more%that%go%hungry.%For%every%young%woman%who%gets%a%scholarship,%there%are%10%more%deserving%candidates.%But%in%the%end,%it%is%these%very%

circumstances%that%have%encouraged%me%to%continue%with%our%motto%“Changing%Lives%in%Kenya”.%

In%spite%of%all% the%barriers,%the%extreme%poverty%and%bias,%the%women%and%girls%of%Kenya%are%extremely%resilient%and%patient.%Regardless%of%the%outcomes,%they%continue%to%persevere.%No%matter%how%large%the%obstacle,%they%continue%to%endure.%These%women%and%children%need%our%help%so%that%they%can%become%

the%leaders%of%the%future%and%create%sustainable%solutions%for%their%community’s%problems.%

Part%Two:%%Program%Information%–%East%Africa%

a. Young%Women%

We% provide% impoverished% young% women% with% economic% and%

social% skills% to% empower% them% to%help% themselves,% their% families%and%ultimately,%their%communities.%Programs%range%from%job%skills,%social% skills,% scholarships,% and% income% generating% projects% and%

confidence% and% selfMesteem%boosting% programs.% % Simple% sanitary%pads% keep% the% young% women% from%missing% school.% We% support%gender%equality%and%selfMesteem%building%programs.%

b. Children%

Children%are% routinely%neglected%and% left%behind% in%Africa.% %FICCS%provides% food,% medical% and% hygiene% supplies% for% over% 1000%children%in%the%slums%and%rural%areas%of%Kenya.%%Our%support%helps%

prevent% minor% illnesses% and% infections% while% providing% much%needed%feeding%support.%For%many%children,%the%meal%they%eat%at%

school%will%be%the%only%meal%they%eat%for%the%day.%Food%helps%the%children%learn%and%think%well%and%improves%class%attendance.%

c. Cardiovascular%Care%

Our%cardiovascular%care%programs%in%East%Africa% includes%training%cardiologist%using%“hands%on”% live%

cardiac% catheterization% procedures,% classroom% training% and%symposiums% and% workshops.% The% program% provides% charity%procedures% for% poor% and% needy% patients,% which% includes%

supervised%pre%and%post%operation%consultations.% %To%date,%over%50%successful%charity%surgeries%have%been%performed%and%training%for%African%cardiologist,%nurses%and%biomedical%engineers.%

d. Income%Generating%Projects%

Sustainable% programs% require% capacity% building% among% local% stakeholders.% FICCS% provides%administrative,% marketing% and% skill% building% support% to%

development% projects,% which% are% designed% to% provide% incomeMgenerating%opportunities%for%young%women%in%East%Africa.%Projects%include%sewing,%jewelry%and%bead%making%and%special%events.%FICCS%

sponsored% a% special% event% featuring% women’s% boxing,% dancing,%singing,% arts% and% other% entertainment.% Women% are% provided%administrative,%marketing%and%public%relations%training.%

e. Health%Training%

Since% 2010,% over% 200% young% women% have% completed% a% 15Mweek%health%and%hygiene%class%designed% to%provide%basic%medical% skills%to%prevent% illness% and% infections.% Local%nurses% visit% the%girls% each%

week%and%provide%them%with%check%ups%ranging%from%breast%exams%to%HIV%tests.%The%young%women%are%all% from%the%slums%of%Nairobi%and% have% never% had% any% formal% medical% training.% % Once% health%

issues% are% identified% local% nurses% teach% the%women%how% to% treat%their% ailments.% % Classes% include% classroom,% lectures% and% “hands%on”%training.%

f. Scholarships%

Scholarships% have% been% allocated% to% the% top% performing% young%women%and%girls%from%the%slums%of%Nairobi%and%rural%communities.%

Due%to% the%high%amount%of%girls%needing%an%education,%FICCS%does%proper%due%diligence%and%has%been%able%to%select%the%best%students.%Currently,% there% are% 4% Nursing% scholarships,% 3% Teaching%

scholarships,% 2% High% School% scholarships% and% 10% primary% school%scholarships.%%All%girls%are%performing%well%in%their%studies.%

g. Medical%Camps%

Free% medical% camps% for% rural% Maasai% communities% include% free%

medical% checkups,% free% medicines% and% free% immunizations.%Children%are%the%primary%focus,%as%most%rural%children%do%not%have%access% to% doctors,% nurses% or% appropriate% medical% facilities.% Dr.%

Patel%and%volunteer%USA%medical%workers%conduct%medical%camps%all%across%Kenya.%

h. Medical%Equipment%

To%date,%FICCS%has%donated%over%$2%million%USD%worth%of%state%of%the% art% medical% equipment,% medical% supplies% and% medicines% to%needy%hospitals%and%clinics% in%East%Africa.% %Donations% range% from%

incubators% and% anesthetic% machines% to% pacemakers% and%stethoscopes.% % Thanks% to% donations% from% our% US% corporate%partners,% FICCS% is% able% to% improve% the%quality%of%medical% service%

for%marginalized% communities% in% East% Africa.% FICCS% also% provides%biomedical%engineers%to%install%and%train%local%medical%workers.%

Rebecca%Maundu,%21% % % %

Rebecca%was%born%and%raised%in%the%slums%of%Nairobi.%She%lives%

in% a% cramped% wooden% shack% with% a% dozen% other% relatives.%Rebecca%was% the% top% scorer% in% the% first% FICCS%health% training%class%and%as%a%result%was%offered%a%Nursing%Scholarship.%She%is%

currently% a% second% year% student% at% Kenya% Medical% College.

Angela%Siakat%Namunkuk,%21% % % %

Angela% is% a%member% of% the% Loita% Hills% Group% Ranch%Maasai,%located%in%an%extremely%remote%area.%Angela%had%to%live%at%the%

school,%which%has%no%power%or% running%water.%She% is% looking%forward%to%returning%to%the%school%to%teach%others.%Angela% is%currently%a%first%year%Nursing%student.%

Carolyne%Akinyi,%21% % % % %

Carolyne%was%born%and%raised%in%the%slums%of%Nairobi.%She%is%a%second%year%Teaching%College%student.%She%lives%at%home%with%her%mother%and%sisters%in%a%small%tin%shack.%Carolyne%was%the%

number%one%student%at%Teaching%College%in%2012.% %

Faith%Muene,%16% % % % % %

Faith%was%the%top%8th%grade%student%at%Ramah%Care%Center% in%the% slums% of% Nairobi.% She% was% awarded% a% high% school%scholarship%and%is%now%5th%out%of%over%400%students%at%her%new%

school.%Faith%recently% lost%her% father%and% lives% in%a%one%room%cement%building%with%her%mother.%Most%students%do%not%get%a%chance%to%attend%high%school%because%they%cannot%afford%fees.%

Jennifer%Saipi,%12%

Jennifer% is% a%member% of% the% Shompole% Group% Ranch%Maasai%located% in% the% desertified% areas%of% southern% Kenya.% She% is% in%the%4th%grade%at%Oloika%Primary%School%and%hopes%to%be%a%nurse%

one%day% so% she% can% treat% sick% people.% Jennifer% lives%with% her%mother%and%5%siblings%in%a%Manyatta%(Maasai%hut)%and%tends%to%the%animals%and%her%family.% % % %% %

Ekra%Kariuki,%65%

“I% have%9% children%and%need% to%go%back% to%work”,% stated%Ekra,% “How% am% I% going% to% take% care% of% my% family”,% she%wondered.% The% trouble% began% in% 2003% when% she% began%panting% and% sweating% excessively.% A% farmer% with% a% large%

family,% Ekra% could%no% longer%do%his%work%and%provide% for%his%family,% yet% after% years% of% waiting,% she% finally% received% her%pacemaker%from%FICCS.%

Wangari%Kagwi,%50%

In%1982,%Wangari%was%a%High%School% student%doing%what% she%loved% best,% working% in% the% field.% However,% her% life% changed%

forever%when%she%had%a%heart%attack%and%20%years%later,%after%years% of% taking% aspirin% and% painkillers,% she% was% told% she%needed% a% pacemaker.% Unable% to% afford% the% costs,% 10% years%

later%she%received%a% free%surgery% fro%m%FICCS%and%now%she% is%back%working%in%the%fields.%

Jane%Kiama,%42%

Jane% never% considered% heart% disease% to% be% a% problem% since%she%thought%herself%too%young%for%this% illness.%A%hard%worker,%Jane%experienced%shortness%of%breath%in%2007%and%went%to%the%

only%public%hospital%in%Kenya%and%found%they%did%not%have%the%facilities% for% the% surgery.% After% bouncing% from% hospital% to%hospital% with% bills% mounting,% without% any% results,% she% was%

finally%referred%to%FICCS%and%today%she%is%back%to%work.%
