To participate, you should be able to tune your instrument, play chords at a steady pace, and (optionally) work up melodies / leads. Silicon Valley House Concerts Presents David Grier

Friday September 11th, 2015 – Mountain View David Grier is regarded as one of the premier acoustic guitarists in the world. Recognized by Acoustic Guitar Magazine in 2000 as one of the Artists of the Decade, and named Guitar Player of the Year three times by the International Bluegrass Music Association, Grier has played on four Grammy Award-winning albums (True Life Blues: A Tribute to Bill Monroe; The Great Dobro Sessions; Alison Brown’s Fairweather; and Amazing Grace 2: A Country Salute to Gospel). “His unmatchable mastery of the guitar is ever present, but it’s the emotional exploration of the music as a whole that leaves a lasting impression. There is evidence everywhere of deep musical introspection: real soul-searching, and, I would have to say, bravery.”~ Martin Mull Reservations: silicon-valley-house-concerts+managers [at] googlegroups.com Also at the Silicon Valley House Concerts: • Sept 24, 2015 Canote Brothers • Sept 26, 2015 Canote Brothers: Guitar & Fiddle

** An older song popularized in the bluegrass community by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys. Here’s a video of the band playing it on Hootenanny, around 1964: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nov127Ta_Eg

This instrumental break is based on "Fiddlin’" Doc Roberts’s mandolin playing on a 1934 recording by Asa Martin(1900-1979, guitar and probably vocals here), and Roberts (1897-1978, playing mandolin on this recording though hewas mainly known as a fiddler). See www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9rk-1EPSZI. These lyrics are Flatt’s, from theabove Hootenanny video. The vocal melody is mostly Flatt’s, with a few bits from the Martin-Roberts recording.

Transcribed, arranged and typeset in ABC by Pete Showman, 7/16/2015 (rev. 1).
